I was surprised at just how small this place is, come early if you want a table. We waited for about 15 minutes for a table, but, finally opted to take our orders takeout. We ordered 4 of the so-called famous burgers with fries. Yes, the burgers were large (by that I mean the meat is about an inch over the bun and is misshapen) but, they had absolutely no salt or seasoning whatsoever. We weren't impressed the burgers we ordered medium were well done. The fries were homemade and yummy, but, they only give you maybe half of a handful of them in a takeout if that many. For 4 of us, takeout burgers and fries with no drinks, it was $40.00, to me that is expensive for a little diner like this one. Overall, we'd go here again, but, it wouldn't be our first choice, pricy and burgers weren't all they were cracked up to be with the lack of salt or seasoning. The portion size of the fries in each of our orders was laughable at best with probably 8 small home cut fries.

On black Friday my fiancée and I decided to drive to Clayton and avoid all of the crowds and sales in the city and visit our local artisans of the area. Knowing that we were headed to Clayton my mother gave me a coupon for the pickle barrel cafe, which stated buy one pickle barrel burger get one free. We went into the restaurant we ordered Onion rings as an appetizer, two burgers off the menu with a side of homemade potato chips and two drinks. The burgers though very large were very bland and had a lot of cartilage in them and it was difficult to chew. The homade potato chips were delicious but the portion size was extremely small in comparison to the burger. Lastly the ice tea just tasted bad I'm not sure if they had been sitting out for several days but it was rancid. However, we had the coupon so I figured we'd cut our losses and maybe they were just having an off day. When we went to check out we were told that the coupon was not valid Even know we had purchased two pickle barrel cafe burgers off the menu??? Apparently in order to use the coupon we had to have the same toppings on each of the burgers for it to qualify. We discussed our concerns with our waitress who immediately insisted that that's just the way it was and that they had discussed it with the owner and he was not willing to budge on the issue of the toppings. Disgusted we payed full price for the meal but I will never ever ever go there again!!!

I was afraid it would be packed before others also went to the garage sale. The sampler breakfast plate had a little of everything, and the pancake was huge and fluffy! Honestly my favorite part. The old-time diner feel is great, with little jukeboxes at each table. Love this place!

We were visiting the area, and were appealed to this restaurant due to its old time diner look and…read morethe vintage car out front. Once we were inside, that vibe continued. The vintage diner feel was cozy, and the Coca-Cola light fixtures were unique. Each table also had its own vintage jukebox. We came on a busy Sunday morning, but got lucky and were sat right away. From the beginning, and throughout our experience, the staff were very friendly. Our sever brought us drinks within minutes, and we were able to put in our orders pretty quick. Like I said, it was a busy Sunday, so it took awhile for us to receive our food. But this gave my wife and I time to talk, and enjoy the ambiance. I ordered the breakfast lasagna (had never seen this before) with white toast and a side of corned beef hash. When the food came out, it was warm and fresh. The breakfast lasagna had a nice flavor from the peppers and onions and meats that were baked inside. The base was made from what seemed like mashed potatoes which threw me off a little, but wasn't bad. The toast had a good toast to it, and was nicely buttered. I am a corned beef hash lover, and Shorty's was pretty good! The flavors meshed well together and the texture was great. My wife ordered the sausage gravy and biscuits which was not great. The sausage gravy was lacking flavor, with the main taste being cream. The sausage within the gravy was cut up sausage links, and for myself and my wife at least, we prefer ground sausage. Lastly, the biscuits were nothing to write home about. They were not bad but they didn't wow. Overall, I gave Shorty's a three because the food didn't wow me. There was not anything wrong with the food we had at all, and we will probably be back in the future to try some of their other food. Otherwise, my wife and I also loved the feel of the diner itself.

Kiddo got the blueberry muffin that was so delicious - sugary every bite! He also tried a slice of the French toast which was eggy and perfect! It was HUGE and was so good! We would definitely return on our next trip to the Bay!

Thinking oh great is this place closed. Do we need to find another place. The shear panic. All the signs say open so we went in. What a quiet little "truck stop" diner. So conveniently located. Easy on easy off. Ashamed it wasn't busier. So please go here and support the flying spatula so it stays! First off there is a lot of choices. Everything sounded good. Kiddo got a blueberry muffin. It came hot and delicious. He also got a slice of French toast. Both very good. Wife got the chicken tendies and fries. (She panicked and wasn't ready so she ordered the old reliable) As for me I ordered the turkey club and it was hands down top turkey club I've ever had. This skyscraper was massive. We bother ordered the homemade fries and they were meah. Better with some more salt. All in all I think we'll stop every year we're in town and will recommend to everyone headed that way.
