I was slightly hesitant to use a company that didn't have much of an internet presence, however I know that homegrown businesses are generally cheaper because they have less overhead. I sent Luis a message here on Yelp and he responded relatively quickly with an estimate (which he stuck to even with some slight modifications to the project during the work). Few days later and he was here with his crew on a Saturday and ready to roll. The project took them a few hours, and Luis had to make a couple trips to Home Depot during the job. The entire time they were here, they were very professional and respectful of my property. They used wood and metal to cover up the pipes, and everything was measured perfectly, and his "finisher" came to the house to repaint them to match the textured paint on the existing basement wall. I have to say it came out looking better than I could have imagined. They cleaned up after themselves pretty well and Luis was very nice to talk to. I wouldn't hesitate to use Luis again for a construction job. He does quality work and stuck to his initial estimate.

From those, only half actually showed up to the appointment. John was by far the most responsive and the easiest to communicate with. Although the other contractors we talked to seemed capable... I wasn't 100% confident they understood what I wanted in our stairs. They spoke in "contractor terms" which went way over my head, or just nodded and said "yup, that's fine." The biggest thing I stressed during our appointment was that I wanted to make sure this didn't look like an "afterthought" to the house. I wanted it to look like it belonged there. John was able to take one look at the rest of our house and come up with an idea of what we wanted. He had an iPad with him, pulled up a bunch example photos... and they were perfect! Being able to visualize the project made me much more confidant that I wasn't about to waste my money on something I didn't like. John went over several options with us to help suit our budget, and when we found one that we were comfortable with, we happily signed. He was able to start right away and was very conscious of our time frame. (I only had about 2.5 weeks to get this project complete before a big party!) One thing I really liked was how NEAT he worked. I have an 11 month old son who gets into everything, so it was nice to come home to a house where tools were put neatly away, dust was swept up, and there were no exposed nails sitting around for my son to eat. He even had another person come to do a deep clean of our house and get rid of any dust that floated into our other rooms! I'm a happy camper! We're now thinking of having John come back to spruce up our 1970's fireplace mantle.

Objectively though, I'd rate his work the same even if it was the first time I'd met him. John did the wainscoting in the nursery for our first child. Although I'd seen some of his previous work and knew it was fantastic, I wasn't sure how this job would turn out. I can be pretty particular about things, and wasn't sure if the styling would come out how I wanted. That he is family added an extra dimension, as I'd have to be "happy" with his work even if it sucked. It most assuredly didn't "suck", and he far exceeded my expectations. The wainscoting makes the room "pop" and it is instantly something visitors key on as they enter the room. It adds a classic and cozy feel to the room for our first daughter. The craftsmanship is amazing; there isn't any sloppiness to his work. You can tell he really takes pride in what he does. Although there was a fair amount of wood to be cut, nothing ever escaped the room. I never saw dirt or wood dust anywhere else in the house. When he was done, the room was spotless. Let's face it, some people you don't really want around your most valuable possessions even if they do great work. Obviously I'm a bit biased since John is my wife's brother, but I'd have no problem with John working on my parent's house or have a moment's hesitation recommending him to a friend.

I had about 9 different brick estimates ranging from the guy who said, "uh...sure...I think I can do this," to the couple who just turned tail and ran away, to companies with price tags that were essentially the cost to build a new home. Honestly, everyone at Brick Specialists should be wearing capes when they show up at your house. They are heroes. I cannot give enough kudos. First of all, James is the ULTIMATE professional. He is soft-spoken, kind, accommodating and really knows his stuff. The price point was great (not the cheapest, but in this case it's worth it to pay a little more). Beyond that, the work was impeccable. The guys working on the house were so talented, matching mortar, brick type and color with some really antiquated original brick, and fast. Other contractors on site were astonished at the talent of these guys. People walking down the street would stop to comment or give hugs (yes, this happened more than once). Even though we are satisfied with the quality of work, we are unsatisfied with the amount of work…read morecompleted. We were very disappointed Incepector Handyman Jim arrived without the necessary materials (drywall, texturing material and shower tile adhesive) to do the jobs my husband discussed with him over the phone. My husband sent him pictures and dimensions immediately after their phone conversation. We went to Home Depot to get these materials, unfortunately Home Depot doesn't stock the same window sill material Jim said we needed and that he'd provide to repair the most important fix (cracked window sill) we hired him for. We are unsatisfied with the amount of work done for what we paid. Incepector Handyman Jim charged us $75 per man per hour, for 2 men we paid $150/hour. For $1,150, we expected more work to be completed. When my husband told this to Jim, Jim said, "You got all the work you paid for and we didn't milk the clock." We paid for 15 man hours and this is what we got: - 6 small areas of repaired and textured drywall (no paint) along with touching up several scuffed areas. - Re-positioned a toilet paper holder and towel hook, - Applied caulk to an external window sill (ladder required), and, - Installed 5 pieces of interior door trim. Jim also rounded up the last work hour by 15 minutes, for an extra $37.50. When my husband described the window sill repair job on the phone to Jim, Jim explained the type of wood we needed as well as the specific store he would pick it up from; therefore, we expected him to have the wood with him. My husband also told Jim it was a 2nd floor window as shown in the photos we sent him. When Incepector Handyman Jim arrived, it appeared he had no intention of fixing the window sill because he explained he doesn't like to work in the hot sun so he wouldn't fix it until the fall. He also said he doesn't like to work from a ladder, so he wants us to rent scaffolding for him. Since we were very concerned with the crack in the window sill and potential water damage, they made a temporary fix by filling the crack with caulk. Had we known how slow they worked, it would have been better for us to pay by the job. Had we known Jim doesn't do ladders and hot sun, we would have hired someone else because the most important repair was not accomplished.

Update- Still waiting for Incepector Handyman to make this right. I would not use them again.read more

We then met with several...ultimately choosing Cummings Hardwood Flooring. As I begin to write this review, I glance back over the earlier reviews (2020-2023) we originally found for this company...and can honestly say...NOTHING HAS CHANGED since those earlier postings. Our original meeting with Andy to obtain an estimate was refreshing (inclusive, respectful and knowledge-sharing). His team, as promised, arrived when he said they would. They were exceedingly respectful of the fact that I work from home (and wore earbuds rather than blaring a boom box and shouting). They seemed very organized, worked well together, and cleaned as they went. They completed the project in less time than estimated ("because Mike was on the job..."). Their style and workmanship are clearly deserving of a 5* rating...and we would highly recommend Andy and his team at Cummings Hardwood Flooring and use them again. The only thing we would encourage folks embarking on this type of project to do is invest the time to learn as much as you can about wood, textures, styles, colors, etc. The end product on our floors was much lighter - both in color and in finish - than anticipated. From our perspective it would have been helpful to have seen some type of color/finish samples to better understand the nature and results of the work being proposed.
