Our system was installed in December of 2020. So, this review has some value in reviewing the multi-year relationship between the supplier (XERO) and the consumer (me). It is not straightforward to review solar companies because, well, these are big $ projects and I don't get solar installed every month or every year. So, this review does not compare Xero to other solar companies. I would be writing a fairytale if I were to review them, say, against Tesla. Having that cleared up, let me start the review. First come the sales people. Did they take the time to understand what my wife and I were really wanting our solar system to do for us? Did they propose a system that would meet our needs? George B. was 'our' sales person. He is still with Xero 6 years later, albeit in a larger role. This is a very positive sign. Before you sign with a solar company, ask about turnover and who your contact will be as the project progresses. Xero gave us 'one stop shopping' and that has real value. George fielded all our questions, informed us of status and kept us informed about anything that impacted our project (everything from municipal permits, Southern Edison approvals, project progress, to Solar rebates. Xero continues to be stable. We had one 'sales' meeting where George worked with us to configure a system and set up a timescale and pricing. One funny thing did happen that I should tell you about. George assumed we were looking for a minimum cost system that would lower our electric bill. We had to explain that what we wanted was a system that would give the maximum backup power (battery plus solar) in case the grid went down. That type of system would then also have the property of giving us there lowest SCE bill. Our final system was: 40 panels, 4 Tesla Powerwalls, and all the support infrastructure needed. The price was in line with expectations, so we signed up. The project moved quickly. XERO produced the plans that would be submitted to SCE and the City for permitting. They also created all the paperwork that was needed to take advantage of the government rebates. We were having our roof redone at the same time as we were replacing a much older solar system with the Xero system. George coordinated Xero's work to put hardware in place to hold the panels so the roofers could seal the hardware against leaks. The installation of the solar system went quickly and according to the original schedule. We were up and running 'on schedule'. We have had a few problems since the 2020 installation. One of the LG panels died. Xero replaced the panel, but we also learned that LG is getting out of the solar panel business. If other panels die Xero said they would 'take care of it'. I trust them. Then, one of the Tesla Powerwalls kept tripping the first breaker between it and the rest of the system. That turned out to be due to the screw that fixes a (large) wire to a breaker loosening. Xero repaired that immediately. Probably the most concerning failure we had was that the main breaker, the Backfeed Breaker, that connects the solar/Battery Backup system to the grid, melted and disconnected us from the grid. We were running on battery and solar only for a few days. The good news is that the system as implemented can deliver enough power to run our home and charge our car from the sun alone. One of the very senior Xero folks saw the 'call for service ticket' and rushed right over on a Sunday afternoon. Then one of their very senior engineers came out and diagnosed and repaired the damaged system. This failure was also caused by a screw that fixes a wire to the breaker loosening. The installation crew used calibrated torque wrenches to torque every screw to its specifications. So, faulty installation was not to be blamed. Heating/cooling can cause this type of failure as the wire and screw are subject to expansion and contraction. Overall, Xero is great company. They are stable, have excellent leadership, proudly stand behind their brand, they don't leave you 'hanging', they are easy to deal with, they've been in business for quite a long time, they have a stable workforce. I recommend them highly. "But", you say "aren't you concerned about the failures? Especially the 'loose set screw' issue." Short answer: NO. These failures are bound to happen in electrical equipment that carries large currents (have a chat with one of the AIs about this). There are many issues that can cause such failures: heating/cooling caused by large currents that are not steady; for example switching Powerwalls from charging to discharging. Both loose connections were in high current areas where current direction changed frequently. The solution to these problems is 'maintenance'. Xero now offers annual maintenance contracts which will prevent the type of failure we have seen. That is the theory. We shall see how this works out in practice over time. read more

I am so impressed with this company that I had to write a review of my experience. I had my Tesla powerwall installed about a year ago, but a few months back my energy bill from SCE began to skyrocket. I contacted SCE, but after wasting a lot of time with them, they said there was "nothing they could do." After this frustrating experience I contacted Xero Solar because I didn't know what else to do. I first spoke to Rhetta, who was extremely efficient and helpful. She bent over backwards to stay in touch with me and followed through to make sure my issues were addressed. Then, she got Tina (also) from Xero Solar, to contact SCE on my behalf. Much to my amazement, they were able to negotiate with SCE to refund me the overcharges that should never have been applied in the first place. Mind you, my Tesla power wall had been installed over a year ago, and I doubt any other solar installer would stand by its customer this way. Xero Solar came through for me when I needed it. We had Xero solar install our system around 10 years ago and it is still going great! We have had a few technical things repaired (under warranty) and some software updates but everything is still working and we haven't had a meaningful power bill in all that time. We did recently clean the panels which we should have done sooner, and saw an immediate improvement in production. The staff has been great and super helpful any time we needed something. I decided to do a bit of future-proofing to our existing 10 + year old solar system -- did some research to add a backup battery and possibly more panels - I found the backup battery I wanted, contacted the manufacturer for an installer and was supplied Xero Solar with Rhetta Maynard as contact person - I looked up Xero Solar's reviews and they were real good -- got in touch, made an appointment -- Rhetta showed up to inspect - she was personable and seemed knowledgeable - I was up front about the age of our system - told her it had been inspected a couple of years back and was okay then - but, if'n there were like panels or whatever needing now to be replaced to get the work that we wanted done; I was cool with that -- how to find out - she said for something like $880 Xero Solar would do a thorough inspection - I said I wanted to do that - there are 2 homes on our property with independent solar systems - the other has a battery backup comprised of lead/acid batteries - I told her that we wanted that system inspected too - Rhetta said she would put numbers together and get back and left - 10 days passed, didn't hear anything...so sent an email inquiring what was normal turnaround - no reply - a few days later, sent another - Rhetta responded to say that they were pretty busy, but was working on our bid and would send it by the end of the week - the end of the week came and went -- again, no reply, nothing - I sent another email...this time on Xero Solar's info address - pretty quickly got a call from Rhetta...she said that the lead/acid battery backup that the other system had could be a problem - I reminded her that my system didn't have that and also reminded her that we wanted our systems inspected and would pay the fee even if it turned out we were out of luck - she said she would get back by the end of the week - again, no response, no paperwork, nada - I hadn't dealt with this level of incompetence or ineptness in I don't know when - sent Rhetta an email that I was passing on Xero Solar - she responded to say she was planning to get in touch at the beginning of the week to give me the bad news; that Xero Solar was passing on our project due to age of our system because this could mean that items might have to be replaced - SAY WHAT -- I mean, not only was this a different excuse...but this was the conversation we had on day one...then it hit me; I might be in an alternate universe and it was Xero Solar - I was frustrated and pretty disillusioned...touched base again with the manufacturer for clarification - I was told that, yes, my existing system would work; their equipment was engineered to do just that - I was given the names of 2 more installers - I contacted both - both inspected our system - both said yes the backup battery would work and yes more panels could be added - both sent bids within hours of our meeting -- their bids were just a few hundred dollars a part - being a bit gunshy from my Xero Solar experience I asked "what about contingencies" like an aging system and or... - both said no problem: my existing system was fine and that their bids were comprehensive - I signed a contract with one of these installers...the time this took was less than 2 days... Writing this review brings no joy nor does getting the runaround for 6 weeks with absolutely nothing to show for it...I cannot recommend Xero Solar... read more

The entire solar panel and electrical install team took their time, painstakingly plotting each course of action; were neat, tidy and meticulous in every aspect of their work. They had incredible attention to detail! Every single piece of rigid conduit, outlet bodies, j-boxes, flex and wire was where it was supposed to be and exact. Last year I was in a rush to get solar quotes to lock in NEM2.0. I looked at several options and decided to go with Xero. Collin was my rep/pm. Although not the cheapest option I wanted to use a local company, with good reputation, that can stick in business in the long run and with a proven track record. I had to replace my roof and they patiently waited and coordinated with the roofers to get it done properly and I did not receive any pressure at all. Collin has always answered all my questions. The system was installed, passed all inspections and it is performing as designed. There was a slight miscommunication but they sent the guys the very next day to finish the installation so nothing was delayed. Things are never perfect but that is when professional companies with good customer services show up to make it right. I will keep trusting Xero for my battery addition sometime next year. read more

Yup, 5 (or 10) stars. Just like the other reviews. At least you know Xero is consistent! Beginning to end - great staff - responsive, informed and pleasant. The battery install was a little more complicated than expected - the guys were there until 10pm one night to ensure we got our power back on! Xero rescued us from another solar company with our battery issue. Many other solar companies wouldn't have done that - wouldn't want to get stuck with problems created by someone else. This was the response from the company after I sent a letter recognizing the employees we worked with: "our priority was to focus on our employees and provide them with opportunities and fulfillment." Just finished my installation of both the solar panels and 2 Tesla powerwalls for my house. The entire process was smooth, and it's been an awesome experience to work with the XeroSolar team. My first contact in the company was George. He came to my place, discussed the different proposals, and gave me time to process the plans without any pressure. During that time, I did get some other quotes from other companies to do my due diligence. To be 100% honest, XeroSolar does have slightly higher prices than the other two companies (including SolarCity) that gave me quotes. However, I decided to go with XeroSolar for a few reasons 1) They use top quality panels from SunPower. These have a fantastic 20 year warranty. These panels are part of the reason the quotes aren't apples-apples comparisons. 2) The online reviews for XeroSolar are all phenomenal. Because they're a local company, I felt like they would take care of me and would be responsive. I haven't been disappointed at all. 3) The online reviews of the SolarCity are a bit scary. There are so many reviews that describe faulty installation, systems, and poor customer service. This is such a big investment, that I thought it was worth it to pay a bit more for piece of mind. 4) Their office is really close in El Segundo right off of Rosecrans. Would be super easy to meet face to face (if there was a reason to). So once I decided to go with XeroSolar it's been really stress-free. I decided to schedule the solar installation first, then powerwalls on a different day. After everything was installed, Kevin arranged for the city inspection which was easy. Angel was the lead tech who installed my system, and he has a great team. It took 1.5 days to install the solar panels and get them activated, and 1 day for the powerwalls. During both installations, Angel was respectful of the aesthetics of my house and garage. There was no damage to my house at all despite having to bring 27 panels to my roof in one day. (i'll post the pictures) Overall, I would recommend XeroSolar without reservations. In the short time I've had the system, it feels strangely good to be a solar powered house. It's nice to know that going solar is helping the environment, lowering my monthly electricity bills, and will be a good investment financially down the road. read more

Ah, Ben..what can I say about Ben other than the fact that he's one of the most honest and stand up person that my husband and I have dealt with in this entire construction project. There was a clerical error , which Ben's office made and thought was a simple fix turned into a whole host of problems for us and for Ben a year later while the project was still under construction . Ben and his team worked to straightened it out,but in the end Ben finally sent us an email and said that he will "make us whole" by reimbursing us the rebate that would have been due to us had the paper work been done right by his office the first time. I'm going to say this again: The owner of this company, Ben, recognized that the mistake was not caused by the client, did the right thing and will reimburse his client what they would have gotten had the rebate paperwork been filled out right. When my husband and I got the email - we couldn't believe it - because most of the contractors that we have dealt with during this construction project have either been 1) incompetent, 2) dishonest, or 3) just flat out lazy or 4) all of the above. It's just been so refreshing to see this. The concept of "making one whole" was taught to me when I was in business school but very rarely did I see it in practice - especially in the construction business as I have learned. Now granted we have not been able to use the solar power or the battery yet since the house is not done, however the Mr has been dealing with Ben and has nothing but wonderful things to say about Ben and his business practices. Ben's staff are EXTREMELY courteous, professional and prompt. I think this is very much a reflection of owner when the staff is like this. The finish look of the solar panel is very sleek and cool looking. My husband and I didn't want something that was too thick and bulky and we wanted them to look a certain way and Ben totally delivered! Our architect Larry Peha, who does a lot of work in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, highly recommended Ben when we started construction as Larry knows him personally. Forever grateful for this referral! I acquired bids for purchase and installation of a Tesla Powerwall as an addition to my existing 29 panel rooftop solar array. Xero Solar was the low qualified bidder. After a meeting at my home to review the installation site we reached agreement and I signed their contract. Once the. Required permits were signed the work started and was completed within 3 days. The city inspector review the installation and approved it without question. After startup I questioned if the installation performed per the contract discussion. The project manager, Collin Kapecki, and an engineer reviewed the installation performance and I concurred the installation met all agreed performance expectations. I later contracted Xero Solar to install a second Tesla Powerwall. The additional installation was complex in one day. We contracted with Xero Solar after getting quotes from 2 other local installation contractors. The reasons we went with Xero Solar were their use of US-based SunPower's highly efficient, resilient and competitively priced photovoltaic panels; recommendations from 2 friends on the quality of a Xero installation; friendliness and patience of everyone involved; and Xero's full service management of the project including permitting, inspections, electrical work, final sign off and rebates were flawless. A big thanks goes out to Lee, Kirstin, Ben, Angel and the rest of the team. We were thrilled with every aspect of the project from the early design process through to watching the new meter showing power flowing back into the grid. They managed the ongoing relationships with LADWP and City of Los Angeles which was greatly appreciated. They also worked with us to minimize the visual impact of all the new equipment on our mid-century home - while some may say there's no such thing as unsightly solar service, we did not want it at the front of the house which would have been the most efficient (southern) exposure. This was a big project from our perspective with a new 200 AMP panel, car charging port, running conduit through a very low attic crawlspace and installing 12 panels on a tight roof footprint but they made it seem easy. In the end, the panels look brilliant, out of the way from most views and are generating roughly 18 kWh / day (in March, now up to 24kWh in April). We're thrilled. SunPower's monitoring system offers a nice website and mobile app that allows you to see your current and aggregate generation over time. It connects over our WiFi network (and offers a cellular backup communication system) so that we can check in from anywhere. read more

We recently installed 12 solar panels and a Firewall through Xero Solar. Before contacting them, I logged onto a random website that provides solar quotes, uploaded a bill, answered a few questions, and was sent preliminary quotes and encouraged to contact a few companies. A few reached out to me hoping to set up an appointment to get a more finalized quote. I knew of Xero Solar from a friend, and contacted them instead. We had only owned our home for a few months, and our sales guy, Derek, advised me that if I could wait until we were in the house closer to a year, he would have more data to appropriately size our system. This made sense, as we were planning to install A/C. I contacted him again just before a year was up, because I wanted to allow time to complete the project before the end of the year, when we anticipated that the federal tax rebate would lower. Derek answered all of our questions, helping us to understand why upsizing our system beyond our needs wasn't economical (even though they would get more money by doing so,) and how financing the project rather than paying in full would have affected our return on investment. We opted to move forward with the project with Xero. They worked with our roofer to ensure that the installation wouldn't affect the warranty on our roof. Xero Solar took care of all of the paperwork with SoCal Edison, permitting, and our SGIP incentive rebate. Everyone I've dealt with has been polite and helpful. And a couple months after installation, they called me to say that something was wrong with the communications module to LG, that is used to monitor our system and ensure it is working properly. They sent someone out, determined it needed to be replaced (it was still under warranty) and took care of it. By contrast, a friend of mine was having issues with one of her inverters, installed by a different company, and her phone calls weren't being answered for months. I gave her Derek's contact info, and someone came out to look into her problem and the cost of fixing it outside of her warranty. Due to the price, they told her it wasn't economical, but they would do the work if she wished. A few months later she was finally able to reach someone at her installation company and get it fixed, but as you can see, the contrast is glaring. Xero Solar not only takes care of their customers, but they operate their business with honesty and integrity. I recommend them to anyone who mentions they might be interested in Solar! read more

Extremely satisfied with Xero and their representative Lee Rhoads. They did everything they said they would and when they said they would do it. No hidden costs. Lee took his time and was very complete when we were designing the system for my house. From the beginning, the customer service has been as good as I would want. In fact, when they were installing the system and the first issue came up (I had to make a placement decision), just as I was about to call Lee for his input, he appeared on site to check and see how things were going. They do have leasing available for those that wish to lease. They were honest and efficient, the system was up and installed quickly (only taking 3-4 days). I had a dozen SunPower 370 watt panels installed (most the roof would support on my small house). My summer power bills were $450-$550 a month...they were immediately reduced to $150 a month! Xero Solar installers were extremely competent, polite, and very thorough. My next step will be to add a Tesla home battery system! Xero has batteries in stock, but the demand in Topanga and Malibu is so great (with Edison threatening black-outs), I'll have to wait my turn for installation! We are not new to solar. In 1981, we placed a single panel on the roof of our new home in the Central Valley of California to help with our electric water heater. It worked well until it didn't. Called multiple solar dealers and by far Kirstin at Xero Solar was the most knowledgeable and responsive. Invested over 50k on my panels and couldn't have asked for a better solar dealer. Kirstin was always response during and after installation and the installers were great, friendly and professional. When I decided to consider solar power for my home I found a Xero Solar ad in our community paper. I called Xero Solar's sales rep, Lee Rhoads. Lee visited several times to explain the costs and benefits of installing solar at our home. Lee and the other members of the Xero Solar team delivered seamless service working with both LA County and SCE to get the necessary permits. Once we received the permits, Xero Solar's installation crew did a terrific job getting the system installed on a timely basis. They also did a great job with the clean up after the installation- my wife and I could not even tell they had been at our house. Lee has stayed in touch to make sure I understand how the system works. The Sun Power system has only been operating for a few months but it is operating at better than predicted efficiency.
