Edel was the best waiter we had this summer. He made our dinner wonderful. We loved the food and the service and the margaritas!

This restaurant is one of my favorite places to visit in the Berkshires. In the summer and fall months, I come here at least twice a month. The food is authentic and delicious! The fresh made guacamole is hands down the best of any other I've had in Massachusetts, and the specialty margaritas are amazing. The ambiance is fantastic! The restaurant itself is very cozy, and the decor is bright and welcoming. I most often sit out on their patio with my dog, and the views of the surrounding area are so beautiful and relaxing. Lastly, the service here is first rate. The staff here are such sweet and friendly people, and they love my dog, so it doesn't get any better than that! Edel is one of the standout staff. He is always warm and friendly, very attentive, and a pleasure have as a server. In short, I really like this place, and it is always a pleasure dining here, from start to finish. My in-laws love this place, so we finally checked it out. It's a quaint little place in the edge of town with lots of outdoor seating. Seating which is covered from the sun which is great. Some of the worst I've had. My husband and I split the enchilada especial and it was barely lukewarm. Margarita was tasty but overpriced; I think they kept the price the same and just got smaller glasses. There was a mix up with our bill and that of an adjacent table bill and took three servers about 15 minutes to fix it. Others said it used to be a great place but had gone downhill. The food and the service was impeccable. We started out with el patron margaritas . They are so good but quite small for 15.00 . I ordered the tres enchiladas and they were delicious . I do think the chicken should be seasoned though . Hubby had the steak burrito and they were delicious first thing I always do is taste the steak and it was seasoned and the burrito was super yummy. We ended with the fried ice cream and churros to go . If we find ourselves back in Great Barrington we would definitely return. read more

Mole is amongst the best I've tasted. Bistec à la Mexicana is good too. But the fried ice cream is just ice cream with a cold coating which was pre-fried, not crunchy, and re-frozen. read more

The food has an authentic flavor. There is no ambiance which is okay if this were a taco stand . However it is pricey for 3 4 inch tacos 1/4 cup of rice with refried beans . Then when they give you tostados instead of tacos they make you wait and wait and then tell you that it was your mix up. I wouldn't mind but I'm fluent in Spanish and English and the art of pointing and repeating. They are not offering anything but a taco plate... no extras . Go somewhere else read more

Xicotencatl in Greatbareington has the best margaritas, rice and beans and stuffed poblano peppers but the absolute best and most sizable burritos around drives us here. the carnitas is amazing. Burritos are large, filling is not all rice and geared toward your filling of choice compared to others. They are perfectly cooked. We entertain any of the mexican restaurants Around and enjoy them all. They are all wholesome and very good. Xico stands out among them all for portions, consistency and everything important. Nice evening despite temp of 90 here today. They lost a star when they deleted rice or beans from each meal and all other mexican restaurants give free chips and salsa. That may persuade some we pay the two dollars they are homade. They are a bit more pricey but have out door seating and they do not skimp. We never leave hungry Or thirsty. Enjoy! read more

It has been a while since I've visited this establishment but I am upgrading their rating to five stars. The menu is much improved with items like birria tacos, and the mole was superb. The guac was top-notch, and the beers and margaritas had rave reviews. Even the hot chocolate was well seasoned and delicious. They handled our large party, including small children, quite well. There was easy parking in the private lot. There is also an impressive list of vegan and vegetarian dishes. The ingredients such as the meats, mushrooms, veggies used seemed to be organic and top-notch. I was very happy with the portion sizes and a few was even had leftovers to take home. This was awful. I ordered huachinango, which I've had literally dozens of time in Mexico. It was undercooked but also had no flavor whatsoever even though I asked for extra garlic. They did take it back to cook it more but still no flavor whatsoever. Likewise, the mixed fajitas my guest had ordered had essentially no flavor. The steak tasted like it had powdered tenderizer on it but no flavor. The same for the shrimp. Just rubbery. First time in my life we decided to pay and leave and go elsewhere. Went on Saturday around 2pm for early dinner. Seated quickly. Ordered our drinks, ice tea with sweetener and water with lemon and no ice. Brought ice tea. Asked again for water with lemon, no ice and sweetener. After a while, brought water and tiny lime, no ice and the sweetener. Placed our order of vegetable fajita and my husband ordered something with pork. Our food came out looking good! Tasted good! Attempted to get someone to bring extra napkins and a refill for the ice tea. A young lady came by refilling our water. Asked her, she said, "I'll check". That seems odd. She spoke to our waiter who was eating at the bar. No one came. I flagged another server who was coming into the dining area waving my napkin. She went back behind the bar. Still no napkins or tea. Finally, our waiter looked over from eating his lunch and brought us napkins and the ice tea. There were several people behind the bar doing dishes or something but not taking care of us, the customer. Apparently, only your server is allowed to bring you anything except water. Never returned to ask us if everything was ok until we attempted 2x to get extra napkins. His lunch was more important than ours. I understand him needing a meal break, I believe it's the law. But someone should have been able to get an iced tea and napkins. I was having a messy fajita. I'm also used to going to Mexican restaurants that have Tostitos and salsa complementary. Xicohtencatl was a great stop for us, especially with two kids in tow. Expect good food and great casual atmosphere with a lot of booths and alcoves. Our entrees were spot on, especially the mole. I will echo the other reviews that service was slow, so if you're hungry and/or looking for a quick meal, you may grow impatient waiting. What a surprise to travel from Texas where the Mexican food is the best to find authentic, delicious choices. When entering the restaurant, we noticed the clean & festive atmosphere. We sampled the carnitas, nachos, guacamole, beef fajitas & chicken chalupas & we're not disappointed with any! The margaritas were excellent! The hostesses were congenial & our server, Navid, was a delight & made us feel right at home. My husband and I are from out of town and just happened upon this restaurant. Loved the atmosphere! The inside was very cutely decorated and the word that comes to mind for the outside seating is "oasis". It was fairly busy but we got seated right away. Initially we were seated right near the door with a lot of staff and patrons coming and going so we asked to move to a table tucked in the corner that was empty. Once we got moved, I think we got a little forgotten about. It took about 10 minutes to get water and put in a drink order. Once we were finished our meal, it seems like we sat for at least 15 minutes before getting the check as well. I had the tequila sunrise and my husband had a house margarita. Both tasted reasonably strong and were tasty! For dinner, I had the carnitas burrito. I consider myself a "carnitas connoisseur" and this burrito did not disappoint. My husband had the nachos appetizer as his meal and was also happy with it. If we are in the area again, I'd look forward to going back and trying a few other things off their menu! read more

This review is really just for the subpar takeout experience. Since we had a big party we knew it would be hard to get a reservation. So I ordered online. Their website is easy to access and you just click the dishes you want and submit your name and phone number. They don't take your payment online, you pay when you pick it up. So far, so good. I placed the order and about five minutes later got an email saying to come pick it up in 15-25 minutes. That email was sent at 7:04 pm. I was surprised by how fast they said it would be and headed over immediately. When I got there they told me one dish I had ordered wasn't available but that the rest would be ready in 15-20 minutes. Ok, this too was fine. I had thought the original pick-up time seemed a bit too ambitious on their part and it was a nice evening so I was ok with waiting outside. 15-20 minutes later I check in and was told it would be another 10 minutes. Kept waiting... Everyone once in while the host would catch my eye and let me know they were still working on my order or at least acknowledge my presence. It was obvious they were very busy with all the tables both on the porch and inside the restaurant full. The waiters seemed a bit stressed and I noticed others who were also getting takeout had been waiting for awhile. I overheard the waitress telling one guy that they had messed up his order a little and were giving him a few dollars off. After about 40 minutes of waiting, the host came up and said I could pay, first telling me to double check the receipt and make sure all the dishes were correct. I asked him if that meant the food was ready and he said it was being packed up. He took my payment and then I continued to wait another 10 or so minutes. When the food finally came out it, he gave me a very heartfelt 'sorry for the wait'. I understand that things happen and that they might not be fully staffed up enough to deal with the new crowds now that covid restrictions are lifted, but proper planning and communication is key and they should have been up front and told me in the initial email that the food would take 45 minutes to an hour and I wouldn't have have waited around at their restaurant for a whole hour. When I finally got my food in hand I checked my watch and it read 8:18pm. This was well over an hour from when I got the confirmation email from them saying the food would be ready in 15-25 minutes. All this waiting would likely have been acceptable if the food was amazing. But it wasn't good. It was only an 8 minute drive home from the restaurant so the dishes shouldn't have gotten cold so quickly. I'm guessing the food didn't all come out of the kitchen at the same time and some of it sat around for a while since some of it was cold. Sadly the nachos were very soggy (they should have put the guacamole, sour cream etc on the side to avoid this). The Mole Poblano chicken was very dry. The ceviche was passable, just sort of meh. The only dishes we really liked were the carnitas and the tinga quesadilla. I'm sure the food is normally good from this place since it's extremely popular, but they really need to work on their takeout procedures and be more realistic about how long the food will take to prepare. Telling someone every ten minutes that it will only be another ten minutes wait until an entire hour goes by is terrible customer service. read more

This is one of the very first Mexican restaurants in the area, but we have seen many more pop up recently. Each town around here as at least 2 or 3. I think a lot of people come to this one because they are used to it, but if Xicohtencatl wants to keep up with their competition, they will have to up their game. Positives: * Ambience: the place is fun and colorful. Many tables outside and a good amount inside. * Menu: good variety of items on the menu * Price: reasonable Negatives * Our table sits 6, but was set for only 5. A person in my party had to ask for silverware 4 times, to the point that he still did not have it when his food arrived * Drinks: we were excited to sample some of the margaritas. They look good, but mine, the tropical one, was both very very weak and just bland in taste. * Food quality: out of 6 people, nobody really exulted in "Oh this food is so good". It was all pretty mediocre. I had a salad that was particularly bad, not just because it was lacking in flavor, but because they obviously washed the greens in water and did not drain it before serving it. The food is delicious (I have dreams about their guacamole) and it's perfect for both the meat eaters and vegans/vegetarians in our family, which is hard to beat. I also like the ambiance, and it's fun to be able to sit indoors at the cute booths or outdoors in nice weather. The service is also great, super friendly staff. I lived in Texas for 5 years so I am pretty picky with Mexican food. I've tried most of the places in the area and this one is hands down the best. The people there are lovely and the food is fantastic. The calamari was the best I've ever had. I don't like deep fried calamari, so it was a treat to find this style which is sautéed in the best sauce I've ever had. I could have eaten the sauce with a spoon. Outside seating is plentiful, but could be it gets reserved. When we arrived they hesitated to seat us outside, leading us to think perhaps tables were reserved. This place gets packed, so get there early or make a reservation. The portions are HUGE. We had way too much food. Locals probably know this. But we didn't. So order very conservatively. As huge fans of Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine, we chose Xicohtencatl for a get together with a friend. Xico is a step up from the usual taqueria, and while it's adapted for local tastes, it does a good job. We ordered the Enchiladas de Chipilo (Enchiladas verdes) and the Mole Poblano Especial. The Enchiladas were tasty, well-prepared, and were a generous portion. The Mole was good, although I have to confess that we've traveled extensively thru Mexico, and although this was good, it lacked the deep spicing that one finds there. The chicken was very well-seasoned, and again, the portion was huge. The waitstaff were attentive (maybe a bit too attentive?) but hospitable and friendly. In short, if you're looking for tasty Tex-Mex food in a nice setting with good service, Xico is an excellent choice. read more

Passed by this place a couple of times at nights and seemed busy and thought we give it a try. Well we tried it and it was just ok. Everything was decent but nothing really special. The steak I ordered I wanted medium rare was more on the medium well side. I wanted the chicken quesadilla that I ordered for the kids however they brought me a kids size chicken quesadilla from the kids menu I guess. It was a bit on the smaller side and pretty simple. We also ordered the two combination steak and chicken fajitas, didn't come with to much and only two wraps. The beef was extra hard and chewy. Kids could not eat it for sure and even my wife and I had a hard time chewing it. Also for this I found the price to be really expensive. It was like $26 where I would normally have like at least 4 wraps and a lot more chicken and beef. My wife however did seem to like the rice and beans. The rice was soft and it wasn't bad. However this would not be a place I would come back to. read more

My favorite Mexican food in the surrounding area. Prices are pretty high, but I'm okay with it as long as the food is worthy. I never stop talking about their beans and rice (a staple), and their sangria. I will say that I always advise not to order the margarita. Can be a little loud when they're busy, but that's a sign of a happy clientele. Love the ability to eat outdoors when the weather allows. read more

I Live 65 miles from Mexico (Tucson.) I asked for some salsa piquante. The food was of good quality but very bland. The only hot sauce available was their own preparation of habanero and that was a $4 side dish on the menu. No Valentina, Cholula or Tapatio. Not even Tabasco. Need I say more about authenticity? The service was pleasant and very fast. So fast that I suspect the beef fajitas were precooked and reheated in that the meat was lukewarm on a sizzling cast iron pan.( I note that other reviewers had exactly the same experience)If you know nothing about Mexican food you'll be happy. If you're from the Southwest, you're better of staying home with some Old El Paso . I'm told the margaritas were good but you don't go to a restaurant for the bar. read more

I had a lovely dinner with my parents and sisters here tonight. We sat at a table on the patio that was set towards the side--we had a lovely, private dinner. The food was great. The most popular dishes at our table were the guacamole, the ceviche, and the raspberry mojito. The staff was very attentive. Jose was our server, and he was incredibly friendly and attentive.
