This was by FAR the best dinner experience we've had in the Berkshires, and we're there pretty often. Sometimes restaurants here can get tired of their own customers during the summer tourist season (if you've ever been to a restaurant here on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer you know!), but not so at Agaves. Within a few seconds of seating ourselves, the waiter brought chips and salsa to our table and then came back a minute or two later and took our drink order. The indoor dining space is nice, bright, and clean. The salsa was fresh. The drinks came out really quickly and the man serving us was very good--he didn't need to write down our orders and even remembered the changes we made. Superb Mexican food in Great Barrington. We dined out on the patio which was delightful with great views and comfortable tables. I tried a mezcal cocktail that was very good with chile on the rim. My carne asada came with a large skirt steak, well seasoned, a roasted jalapeño, escabeche and guacamole. A big portion, too. Service was quick and friendly. I've been here multiple times in the last three months while working and exploring the area, and the food and service have been excellent. Mexican is one of my favorite so I would consider myself an expert at this point. The empanadas and the enchiladas are a must-try. Dinner for 2 on New Year's Eve was perfect! The service was enthusiastic and the ambiance had the perfect mix of holidays with a Mexican twist. We arrived early since we had another event after and by the time we left, this cozy place was packed! Had a nice dinner here while vacationing in the Berkshires. Lovely space with patio seating available as well. Margs were fantastic, lots of options. Chips and salsa are complimentary but additional chips are extra (it was a small portion for 4 people so we did order additional chips). While it is a family friendly place, we were not offered a kids menu, but my son did enjoy the regular chicken quesadilla on the menu. Service was friendly, a little inattentive, we had to ask for things like water and additional napkins. Food was solid, very traditional Mexican but well executed. Food is ok, not sure how authentic as my kids said during dinner: Chipotle is better! Maybe this place is still new. We waited almost an hour before our entry came out. Kids were running out of patience and our waitress who was nice and freindly, but oddly, never even came to ask if we needed water refill. Nor did she give us any updates why such delay on our dinner. This was a Sunday evening. Everyone was nice, but the wait was rediculous. What a gem! After the holidays, we were on a drive and stumbled upon Agaves. Needed something other than "New American" fare and this was perfect. Didn't expect good Mexican food in the East Coast (usually El Salvadorean, Peruvian, Columbian, Cuban and Puerto Rican) and this place delivered. We were hungry so no pics but the shrimp tacos (you get 3!), wet empanadas and the nachos were amazing! Don't live in the area so don't know when I will be back but having been telling all my friends and acquaintances to go when they go skiing near the area. The bar had Clase Azul and decent tequila at pretty much every price point (Milagro, Espalon, Herradura, Don Julio, etc) and the service was impeccable. Friendly, efficient and perfect. read more

Still grumpy from 5 years ago when I went for my 21st birthday and asked if they did birthday shots, to which the waitress brought us the most expensive tequila shots, and charged us for them, which we found quite deflating and slimy. Wanted to go here for a long time for chimichangas. Apparently, they don't know what chimichangas are as my beef chimichanga was more like a soft burrito. What's so difficult about deep fried? A chimichanga is deep-fried filled with your protein and served with cheese, sauces, lettuce, and refried beans. This was not deep fried...it was soft with rice inside and sauce on top. Best Mexican in GB. The variety of items is excellent. You have the expected large burrito, fancy tacos like mahi mahi tacos, and sizzling fajitas. This trip, I ordered the Seafood Molcajete, which come out in s steaming stone bowl. Looks impressive. I find the food quality to be good, but the flavors to be a little mild. It is probably that they are catering to a New England palate. But, I prefer the complex flavors at Cayote Flaco in Williamstown. I was on my way home from visiting the Norman Rockwell museum and I was hungry. I thought let's do Mexican. So I looked up Mexican restaurants in the area and just popped up with five stars. I read a little bit about it. I said OK sounds good. I get out there and they had an outside decking area, larger tables and smaller tables for two or one. I said I'd sit out here I was I was serviced right away even though it was middle afternoon. I looked at the menu and there was plenty to choose and it all really sounded good so I went with the shredded burrito had everything in it and it was excellent!! The service was fast and pleasant. Incredible food, service, and atmosphere! They are also super accommodating for children. We just moved to the area and ordered take out form Agave's on moving day to fuel up after a long day of working in the heat. My partner and I have lived all over the US and traveled internationally a good amount. We both are Latino and have had a ton of different experiences eating Latin food. When I tell you that this place shocked and surprised us- seriously. I was like what is this place doing tucked away in Massachusetts in the mountains? The tacos are amazing- def contending for the best I've ever had. We also tried the burrito with fries in it- omg delish. Food was super fresh and so full of flavor. I never had seafood soup from a Mexican restaurant before and it was amazing. Full of different types of seafood, cilantro, and just tasted so good. Also had the Birria Taco special and glad I did. Just 2 tacos but were fat with shredded marinated beef with fresh toppings and an amazing sauce that came with it. Even the rice and beans were perfect. Had to come back for dinner in my 1 day stay here. All servers were super nice and helpful, even during the busy dinner hour. Overall, I thought Agaves was just ok. The service was good, the vibe was ok and the food not my favorite. Vibe: I sat at the bar which was nice. The restaurant has a nice outdoors, the inside is a bit bright and lacks a little personality and warmth in my opinion. Service: Was good and attentive. The only "negative" and I get it, was that they were near the end of the night, so everything was being cleaned at the bar as I sat there. Not the best for creating a good vibe. Food: I was disappointed with the food. First, the Chile Relleno Burrito - chile poblano, queso fresco, chihuahua cheese, beans, rice, pico de gallo, tomatillo sauce, sour cream. Everything was inside the burrito, and it could have benefited from a sauce over the top of the burrito. It was a bit dry and the tortilla was a bit "gummy". The burrito lacked any real flavor and honestly felt like a pile of wet mush. Pricing was a bit high, but pretty standard these days at $14. The Taco Salad was beautifully, but still very 80's in its presentation. The taco meat was standard, nothing special or unique. The dressing was a bit disappointing as it was very oily, even after mixing it up. And I know costs are high these days, but $20 for a Taco Salad? Not sure if I saw value there. Not sure if or when I'll be back in Great Barrington, but I will probably look for other places to eat at. read more

We actually discovered this restaurant by accident while we were looking for a different restaurant. We decided to take a chance - and are very glad we did. We were greeted immediately by a super friendly young man who showed us to our seat and provided us with menus. Shortly thereafter another super friendly gentleman came by and took our drink order. He brought us our drinks and after waiting an appropriate amount of time for us to have reviewed their menu he came back and asked if we had made our selections. Getting right to the good part - their soups are outstanding! They came piping hot and loaded with fresh ingredients. Magnificent flavoring. One of us got the grilled chicken sandwich which came with the usual lettuce and tomato but also came with bacon and avocado. Absolutely scrumptious! We also got the giant burrito which was a truly wonderful experience. The restaurant is bright and cheerful with subdued colors on the walls and pleasant decorations. Overall this was a wonderful experience - one that we will, most definitely, repeat. Give this restaurant a try. You will not be disappointed!!! read more
