Went there for the first time today and was a little bit disappointed. We ordered a bunch of skewers and the lamb skewers were probably the best. The rest were just kind of, meh. The portions were small for the price. Lamb skewers were great - seasoned with cumin and red pepper. Tender with great flavor. Beef skewers were also great (same seasonings). The lamb fat skewers were not as good. I felt like they should have been cooked a little more so they would be crispier. As it was it was a little gross. I thought the enoki and chive skewers were underwhelming. I probably wouldn't order them again. The shredded pork and garlic was good. Sauce was sweet and salty - pretty addicting. Mapo tofu was solid. It could have been a little spicier. Wouldn't recommend. Me and my fiancé randomly decided to try based on yelp reviews. Once we got there I decided to look up the google reviews and I noticed that a look of Asians disliked the food. I'm very sad May's Ice Cream is gone. But I'm happy with the new tenants in its place. Decor here is pretty simple. You can still make out where parts of May's used to be. In the back is where the grilling action happens with skewers all lined up. We've tried most of the skewers and it's pretty good. Some that I was apprehensive about exceeded my expectations. Most of the meats were flavored in spicy chili oil with hints of cumin. The lamb skewers are very tasty. They never seem to have beef available. Beef blackstrap was tasty with interesting texture, almost looked more like mushrooms. Mushrooms were great as well. Eggplant was a bit bland. Beef tendon (they call it beef tender) has a jello consistency with a great beef flavor, not tough at all. Chicken gizzards and chicken hearts were flavorful and tender enough (only slightly chewy, usually it's more tough). Squid and squid legs were nice and spicy. The bread on 2 sticks wasn't bad, a bit too dry for me. My favorite must-have skewer are the lamb kidneys. Has a bit of a unique flavor to it and quite tasty. The big chicken plate is quite good. Comes in a large bowl with chopped up chicken (watch out for the bones), peppers, and potatoes swimming in a chili oil. Comes with noodles. Great way to end an awesome meal! The waiters do not speak much English, so please be patient with them. I asked for fried rice only to be told they ran out of fried rice as they handed me a bowl of white rice. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a good, delicious meal with friends, this is it. This is my place to get my lamb skewer fix; plus they have really delicious food in addition to the skewers. There are even ways you can make a meal here semi-healthy, if you order some of the lighter items on the menu other than skewers. The food here is better family style. Going here with a group of people lets you try some of everything. You can taste the sincerity and pride the chef puts in his dishes. However, this is your prototypical hole-in-the-wall Chinatown restaurant, so just don't expect super clean floors and bathrooms. I've been here many times and here are some of my recommendations: Recommendations: LAMB SKEWERS are AMAZING! I'm salivating right now just thinking about them. BEEF TENDON SKEWERS are usually soft and tasty. There have been a few times when the tendon texture is almost like eating a rubber pencil grip. STEAM BREAD SKEWERS are really good. CHICKEN HEART AND GIZZARD SKEWERS I am personally not a huge fan of, but my friend swears by them and always orders like five of these skewers at a time. Dishes: D5 SHREDDED PORK WITH BAMBOO is one of my favorite dishes. The seasoning is very light, it's a great complement to the strong flavors from the skewers. It's a great dish if you want to have a lighter meal. D7 SHREDDED PORK WITH GARLIC SAUCE is super flavorful. It's a great dish if you want to eat a lot of rice. D25 ON CAI GARLIC SAUTEED is amazing. Finally a restaurant that makes this dish so darn good! D28 & D29 SHREDDED POTATO WITH VINEGAR these two dishes are practically identical except one has spicy peppers in it. It's a great filler dish and has that nice vinegar flavor to it D52 FISH FILLET WITH PICKLED VEGETABLE SOUP is quite flavorful and gives just the right amount of kick to it. D50 PORK RIB SOUP WITH CABBAGE is a light tasting soup with a lot of natural flavors. D36 NORTHEAST CRASH SOUP is interesting. They put thinly sliced french fries on top of the soup. Chinese BBQ done right. Skewers are cheap, with lamb costing $1.30 each (or $12 for 10) and beef costing $1.20 each ($10 for 10). Honestly it was kind of hard differentiating between the lamb and beef skewers, but they were both very good. Well seasoned, slightly juicy, and fantastic smoky flavor. Their other dishes are really good as well, and also CHEAP. The muer/wood ear and cabbage dish (stir fried napa cabbage & black wild fungus) was one of the best renditions of the dish I've had, better than Fu Fu's for sure. And cheaper too, at $6.50. For the same price, we also got a super legit Sichuan style mapo tofu. Heavy on red chiles, and more spicy and oily than the mapo tofu from most other Chinese restaurants here. Location tip - My boyfriend and I had no idea how to find Xin Jiang. It's near the Jus Go market. Beware of the random curbs, dividers and crazy Bellaire drivers. We ordered the lamb, mushroom and jumbo shrimp skewers. We got a side of rice because the boo thang needed extra carbs. The lamb was the bomb dot com. They had tons of flavors and they were hands down, the best thing we had. The mushroom was a close second. If those had been portobello mushrooms, I would've been a goner. The shrimp skewers were a weak okay. They had flavors reminiscent of the lamb skewers but they were lackluster in comparison. I have to iterate how tasty the lamb is again. The lamb is awesome. The lamb melts in your mouth while all the spices dance around your mouth doing a happy tastebud dance. I suggest getting a whole lot more than 10 skewers. Prices here are affordable and you can easily go through a blot of them. The total damage for us was only about $18. read more

Worst service ever. Was completely ignored when I walked in for lunch . Not even a single hello from the staff even though there was only one other table.They brought my food in paper bags even though I never said I wanted it to go. When I calmly complained to the waitress about this, she actually had the nerve to talk back at me, saying it was my own fault that I didn't tell her I was dining in. Yeah right, last I checked this was a restaurant not a food truck. Plus, it's HER job to ask me what I wanted, not my job to tell her.Talk about blaming me for not doing her job right. Then I complained about them charging for rice because they've never done that the previous times I've been there. The woman responds with a snide comment about how I should be grateful that I got away with getting free rice. Enraged by her bad attitude, I shouted at her and told her to show some respect, which led to more arguing between us. Things escalated to the point where I got fed up with the woman and called her a stinking whore in Chinese to shut her up. Yeah, I overreacted, but it was a rough week. And as a paying customer, I never should have been treated that way, considering I was only making some reasonable complaints. TLDR; Food is decent but only because it's Texas where there's literally no competition in the Chinese culinary scene. The staff are aloof, but the same goes for all Chinese restaurants here. Cheap, authentic and delicious. We got a variety of dishes but the stand outs were the lamb skewers and the enokii mushrooms. I'm not the biggest fan of lamb or enokii mushrooms but they were definitely stand out dishes. We also ordered the beef noodle soup and hollow stem veggies which I really liked but next time I'd probably skip those dishes and just order even more lamb skewers and enokii mushrooms.
