The Pit Room used to be one of my favorite barbecue spots in Houston, which makes this visit especially disappointing. After the three-taco dinner, I honestly struggled to reconcile what was on my tray with its Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition. The biggest problem was the one thing a barbecue restaurant needs to get right: the meat. It arrived cold and lacked flavor. The tacos fell apart as I ate them, and nothing about the taste made up for that. I've had considerably better tacos from food trucks. At a place with this reputation, I expected much more. The sides didn't rescue the meal. The cornbread was dry, the mac and cheese was mediocre, and the atmosphere felt lifeless during our visit. The meat should have been the star of the show; instead, it was the biggest letdown. The staff, however, were wonderful--warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. They deserve credit, and the service was easily the best part of the experience. This wasn't an inedible meal. It was an underwhelming one from a restaurant I used to enthusiastically recommend. I've been talking about brisket all week and this place had the best reviews and rating. This place is so small for the amount of traffic coming through. This actually was the reason we chose take out instead of dine in. When we arrived the line was out the door. It was so humid outside so that wasn't a fun wait. Took about 25 minutes to get to the front. When I went to order I wanted the two meat plate but I only wanted brisket. The guy told me I couldn't get two of the same meats so I only got the one meat plate. The plate comes with two sides . I chose mustard potato salad and greens beans. The brisket was the star of course. Green beans way undercooked. They were so hard and although they smelled good they had no flavor, just hella onions. The potato salad was better but it's a no for me. Texture just wasn't my cup and ALL THE ONIONS. So I really paid $24 for brisket because that's all I ate. Now my cousin went after me he ordered the tex mex TACOS. When he got to check out they only put meat on his plate not tacos. They said they would fix it but honestly between the wait, the miscommunications with the staff, and the heat we were over it. Seriously the best BBQ I've ever had. We arrived on a Thursday at 7pm and it was really busy. There was a line and almost every table was taken. This is cafeteria style with you ordering and your order is sliced and plated right in front of you. We went around the corner to the bar area and sat inside. That was really nice since the main restaurant was packed. We got 2 of the 2 meat and 2 side plates. I got the turkey and jalapeño cheddar sausage with Mac n cheese and potato salad. Everything was delicious. The turkey was so moist and tender. The sausage was Smokey and spicy. The Mac n cheese was super cheesy and the potato salad had a lot of flavor. The BBQ sauce provided was too spicy for me, but that didn't matter. My husband got the brisket and pulled pork with green beans and the elote. The brisket was super tender and flavorful. This place was PACKED (and it's a small establishment) right when they opened. I'd heard really good things about this place and unfortunately, I was not impressed. My experience here is why I tend to not frequent BBQ places, I hate being disappointed. The barbecue sauce (the signature and regular) were not good at all. Neither tasted like BBQ sauce. One tasted like tomato sauce with seasoning and the other tasted like a vinegary Tabasco sauce. The brisket was okay, nothing super impressive but no complaints. The queso might have been the most egregious issue (after the BBQ sauce) imagine paying $11 for tasteless, unimpressive, liquid cheese. Nothing in it but cheese and prayers. Adding the brisket (1/4lb for ~$9) along with a variety of other seasonings, made it okay. Ironically, reheating it after a few hours made it actually taste a bit better (enough to justify the price? Absolutely not). The mac and cheese was equally tasteless. One thing I think the Pit Room does EXCEPTIONALLY well is making pickles! Truth BBQ down the street had a full one-hour wait on a Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend, but we lucked out and found a spot at The Pit Room with only a 10-minute wait for takeout. It wasn't our absolute first choice, but it turned out to be a solid alternative! The bark on the brisket and beef rib was really good with the classic Texas salt and pepper rub done right. The ribs were also great Texas-style ribs that my girls really enjoyed. We traveled from Dallas to Houston for the first time and decided to try The Pit Room BBQ because of its excellent reviews. Since we're big fans of Texas BBQ, we were excited to have dinner there and expected a great experience. The atmosphere was what you'd expect from a traditional Texas BBQ restaurant. However, there were quite a few flies around, and we had to constantly keep them away from our food, which made the dining experience less enjoyable. Unfortunately, the food was a huge disappointment. The brisket was extremely dry and lacked the juicy, tender texture that good Texas brisket should have. The pork ribs were also underwhelming--they mostly tasted like black pepper, with very little smoky or savory flavor coming through. We've eaten at many BBQ restaurants, including Hutchins BBQ in the Dallas area, and we've never had brisket and ribs this disappointing. I rarely leave one-star reviews, especially based on the food alone, but this meal was honestly one of the worst BBQ experiences I've had. We did take-out so I can't speak to the experience of eating in house, but it looked there were several seating options both indoor and outside. My wife and I shared a 3 meat dinner which comes with 2 sides. We ordered brisket, pork ribs, and turkey with potato salad and charred green beans. We also ordered an additional jalapeno cheddar sausage. Everything was so so delicious. Everything was very fresh and still hot when we got home after about a 15 minute drive. We tried the house sauce and the house mustard, both of which were delicious. The staff were kind and worked quickly. The rib was probably the best thing it didn't have too much flavor, but it was yummy. The macaroni was definitely a three out of 10 and the beans were also about a five out of 10. There really was no flavor to the meats. I'm a heavy cooker and I also love to barbecue, but I barely could taste the smoky flavor. We ended up not eating everything because it honestly wasn't that great however, my favorite thing was probably the rib in the brisket. I really was expecting this to be really good, but after conversing w/ a couple of other people, I heard that this is more like a Houstonian place. For the amount of food that you get and the wait of the line, this place is well worth it. For 1 pound of meat with the dinner platter, and multiple sides, it only came out around $27. This is such a steal in comparison to some of the other big barbecue names in the area. The line itself also only took maybe an hour to get through. And again, at peak times, in comparison a lot of similar areas probably take more than two. Overall, though I think that the brisket wasn't as well made has some of the other barbecue places, but the sides were delicious. I think they would impress a non-Texan, but for me, knowing how brisket can taste, it wasn't as flavorful or tender. The structure of the restaurant is very do it yourself as well. Each meal also comes with a slice of bread, and there's an area in the middle of the restaurant where you can self serve sides. They have various pickled vegetables. Service was fast for the most part, when you got to the front of the line. The style is you tell the butcher how much you want, he weighs it and passes you down the line to get your sides. Inside only had around 20 people worth of seating. But the outside had a bunch of tables, which are open if it's not too cold to sit. Everyone working there was super friendly, and ordering went super smoothly. We ordered the brisket with a couple of sausages and the beef rib. BANGING BRISKET!!!! Friends hosted a rehearsal dinner here and OH MY. This is legit the best brisket I've ever put in my mouth! My wife, daughter, son-in-law, and I were staying near the Rice campus on a Saturday in early May, waiting for graduation ceremonies later that day. My wife and I had had a great experience at the Pit Room previously, so brought the rest of my family here to experience. I found the food to continue to be really good, especially the fatty brisket. Stopped by around 11 am, and there was still parking in the dedicated surface lot next to the building. The smell of bbq wasn't as prevalent as last time. Once walking in, you stand in line to first order your meat...which is immediately sliced in front of you. You then move further along to ask for your sides, including as many slices of plain white bread as you want. My daughter treated us this time, so didn't record prices, but thought it was reasonable. I liked the sliced brisket a lot, along with the side of elote corn and mac n cheese. The free toppings bar had the various pickled vegetables that really cut through the fattiness of the meat. Drinks were all self serve, with a water station and soda fountain. Probably ordered a bit less than expected for 4 people, but was happy that there were no left overs, and left not completely stuffed, since we had a long day ahead of us. A true place i bring friends and family all the time to show them the real texas bbq! Food is 10/10, smokey and flavorful yet not too salty, everytime I come. Service is fast and efficient, so you gotta make up your mind before your turn. They got a huge menu but I would recommend getting the meat by pound so you can make your own sandwhich with the complimentary buns, and you can always take home the leftover meat and make more food at home like I made brisket fried rice it was so bomb. The pork ribs were perfect as the meat fell off the bone easily. It was also a tad saltier than what I was used to. The briskets were good but I felt like the meat wasn't as juicy without the fat. There were sauces you can use with the meat and I admit the bourbon coffee BBQ was my least favorite because it was too strong and sort of ruined the BBQ flavor. The chicken taco was also good but not the best. I wish they added some texture or something in it aside from just chicken and cheese. The coleslaw was delicious. It was fresh and wasn't too overwhelming with the mayo. The elote was honestly my favorite. It had the right amount of sauce, cheese, and crunchiness. The front desk staff was helpful and patient with newbies, recommending menu items and accompaniments from the bar nearby. I had the chorizo breakfast taco and the pulled pork hash taco - I was delighted to find out that "hash" meant a delicious hash brown inside the taco. The egg was creamy and perfect inside a taco, the cheese was good, the meat was amazing. I don't think it's possible for me to be happier with roughly $9 in breakfast food. So good! I'm usually hesitant about BBQ restaurants because I only eat chicken and turkey but they had plenty of VIABLE options for me. We ordered family style and they provided recommendations for what to get to accommodate everyone. We got there just in time - there was only one table sat when we arrived. By the time we ordered and sat down, the line was out the door! There was soooo much food. And it was delicious. Bad idea for a lunch break during a conference, because I definitely needed a nap afterwards, but I have no regrets.
