    3lbs sliced beef.
    Cindy Z.

Just a quick update: The price has increased to $20 per tray for 3lbs of sliced beef. Despite the $5 increase, you're still getting an amazing deal here. Perfect place for your shabu, kbbq, and gyudon needs!

You must have space and time to clean and slice with a meat slicer. Beef (3lbs for $20, 07/27/2020).

Ask for pork. He actually has pork! If you can't speak Mandarin, but the Mr. doesn't speak or understand Cantonese, show him the google translation for "pork". Hahaha! I did this and he brought out about a 1.5 lb container of sliced thin pork. I asked, "how much?". "$10", he said. Doesn't hurt to try and ask if you don't understand Mandarin. Next time for pork.

First time here, recommended by friend. Great Shabu shabu meats: $20 for 3lb beef and $22 for lamb. Highly recommended

Some shops inside have yet to open but the market looks better in terms of set up and layout. The organization is better & the products & produce are better arranged & stocked. The staff seem better, too at being nicer to customers, more smiles. Thankfully it's the location that closest to our place. More and more vendors/shops are opening at the TAWA Gateway and the aesthetics surrounding the plaza is being remodeled to appear more gentrified and a seem more of a relaxed atmosphere.

As for products, they're pretty standard to most markets around. Produce are fresh and meats are plentiful. Staff here is efficient and friendly. Occasionally, you'll find staff handing out free samples similar to Costco. Overall, a standard market and pretty consistent with other 99 Ranch Markets. They also have a bakery in the back which is pretty popular. Not expensive at all and plentiful of options. They have self checkout stations as well but sometimes they're not open. Usually there's about 3-4 cashier stations going on so traffic control is pretty good.

I have been to this Asian market a few times and am actually surprised that the price of produce is really cheap. But you do have to be aware that the fruits may not last as long as maybe going to another market like Smart & Final or Stater Bro's. Also there have been times when I have seen produce starting to mold/ have spots. During cherry season, I was surprised to find that this market sold rainier cherries (I actually love these more than the red ones) for $1.98 per pound where as other places are selling them for anywhere from $5 to $7 per pound. It is very busy when some of their produce like that is very cheap (because you know you just aren't the only one who thinks that is a good deal). The rest of the market itself has a similar layout as what you would expect at other Asian markets. And on our past visits, the market has been clean and did not have that familiar odor that may be associated with Asian markets. One thing I thought was interesting though about this market is that you need to have a minimum purchase of at least $5 for credit card transactions. I have only seen a small number of markets that have a minimum for credit card transactions and just wanted to bring that up for those that don't normally carry cash but wish to grocery shop here.

True to form, they did deliver an impressive assortment of tropical and hard-to-find fruits. So far, so good. Now, about that word fresh -- let's call it aspirational. Several fruits were sporting some noticeable blemishes, though in fairness, that might be the work of picky shoppers playing a game of "squeeze every mango and put it back." We've all seen that person. The selection overall wasn't bad, but they fell short on a few things I needed -- either the price was a touch high, or the brand wasn't quite right. The store leans heavily on food products from China, which appears to be their bread and butter (or should I say, their rice and soy sauce). As for making a special trip from home? Probably not. The limited selection on my must-have list makes it a tough sell for a dedicated haul. That said -- if you're here specifically to raid their produce section and stock up on exotic fruits you won't find at your average grocery store, this is absolutely your spot. Just, you know... inspect before you invest.

But my husband and I were looking for a specific Chinese tea drink and so we ended up coming here because we had gone to a few of the other Chinese markets nearby with no such luck. We ended up parking on Valley instead of parking in their small parking lot and then walked in. I am surprised that this market hasn't changed since my childhood, honestly the market doesn't look like it has remolded or changed. It's like a time capsule, frozen in time. I did end up finding that tea drink here and I was also really surprised how cheap a lot of the produce was, as compared to other Asian supermarkets. And as long as I am able to park on Valley, I think I would consider coming back here the next time I'm in the area.

Based on that response, my dad went back to the store by himself. Unfortunately, we had already thrown away the original paper receipt, but we still had a clear photo of the receipt, as well as photos of the moldy bread. I understand that requiring the original paper receipt may be their policy. However, the way the situation was handled was very disappointing. My dad drove about 50 miles round trip after seeing the store's response on Google and expecting that the issue could be resolved. Once he arrived, customer service would not issue the refund without the original paper receipt. My dad did not want to argue, so in the end he simply took another loaf of bread instead. My family has been shopping at Hawaii Supermarket for about 20 years, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. This was never really about the price of one loaf of bread. It was about the customer service and how the situation was handled after selling a moldy food product and publicly asking us to come back to the store for a refund.
