Pho N Seafood at the Oval has been a go-to spot for my family for years, but today was disappointing. Our table was dirty and we had to clean it ourselves. We ordered calamari and two combination phos, but the food took over 15 minutes and only one pho came out at first. The calamari was extremely crunchy, dark, and overdone. The redid it free of charge but I really hated to be that guy putting more work on the workers. Still... the pho was also below its usual quality. The pho broth was not clean. I ordered the beef pho, and when i added sriracha, it didnt change color. The salt and pepper shrimp was delicious. The service was good, no issues there. The building does not have any sign on it, looks like an abandoned building minus the neon open sign. Ok. This is the honest truth about it. This place is hole in the wall. I would NEVER give this place a 4 star BUT the kitchen is serious and that's where they invest the talent. It has good food and that's what you'll get. Leave the rest of your expectations at the door and you'll have a nice evening. No crying over not being greeted at the door, not having the greatest waitress of all time and the greatest atmosphere. I mean, look at the pictures! A rainy day calls for some hot pho. This place came up so we went to try. We walked in and immediately my husband said he didn't have a good feeling about the place. It looked dingy. But it was late and I didn't want to keep looking so we stayed. The place was busy and I figured the food must be good. I wasn't wrong. I ordered the beef pho and my husband ordered the salt pepper chicken wings xtra spicy with shrimp fried rice. Both very tasty. I would have given it 4 stars but the place was not so great looking. The floors were very greasy and everything looked like it needed a deep cleaning. Our server was very nice though and gave us a few recommendations. So to be fair I am originally from Southern California which is THEE place for vietnamese food. I think if I didn't have that as a comparison my review would probably be a solid 4 stars. The pho was decent! Nice mix of meats good flavoring in terms of spices but lacked a little depth in terms of beefyness. The salt and pepper shrimp was also decent good mix of shrimp, jalapeños, and garlic however not as crispy as it could of been (but I did get it to go). Last the spring rolls were a bummer. It was a little thin in terms of filling and the dipping sauce was thai chili sauce when typically I am used to it being with nuoc Nam or a hoison peanut sauce so it was a little weird with this flavoring. Always a fan of this place but they truly out did themselves today!!! Called in my order and upon arrival realized it wasn't done, which is fine u always expect to wait a bit. What happened next is what really caught my attention they worked quickly to figure out why my order wants ready & during the process there was another customer who called and said they got a wrong item in their order (which was my order). 1) They we're very courteous to the customer calling and offered to make it right if she could return. 2) they worked as quickly as they could to correct my order and due to the inconvenience refunded me. I can truly appreciate a business that not only acknowledges what they did wrong but can keep their composure and still be polite through it all, especially when people get angry for things that happen. So I come from SoCal and I live close to a lot of Vietnamese restaurants so I'm NOT comparing this place to places I've had in SoCal; but rather I'm comparing this to other pho places I've had in central cal. + INTERIOR: Like any other Pho restaurant, interior is essentially the same, the only thing that is different is aside from hoisin sauce and siracha, there's also chili oil and sugar on the table. + The WAIT: We arrived on a Saturday afternoon (right at noon) and weren't seated until about 1PM. It's quite a busy place with not too much seating and there's quite a few people ordering take out while also waiting to get seated. This place is quite popular and I feel if there were more staff members at this place who can quickly seat people, this restaurant could be even better. + Pho selection: KEEP IN MIND THERE IS NO CHICKEN PHO (Pho Ga) HERE! The options are: Beef pho, seafood pho, or combination (of seafood and beef) pho. I ordered the beef pho while my bf got the seafood pho. The meat of the beef pho was quite flavorful but the broth was a bit on the saltier side. The beef pho comes with meatball, tripe, and beef slices itself. About $8 for a small (the portion of a small felt like a medium or a large to me though). My boyfriend felt like the seafood Broth was also quite salty. The seafood was "standard" to him. Came with shrimp, fish ball, and fish fillet. He also ordered the small and it was too much food for us! Portion sizes are big here. Overall impression: for what it's worth, i definitely think this restaurant is a 4/5.
