My soft-shell crab was crispy outside, tender inside and emphatically fresh. My wife's chicken fried rice was not only tasty, but the portion was enormous. I had tuna sushi as well as masago, eel and tobiko, all of which were as good as any sushi I had back in New York, but I'll give extra points for the beautiful presentation. Going out feeling like getting a few sushi rolls, so we came to this place in Roscoe that was better than expected. It didn't look impressive from the outside. Yaba is located in a strip mall, which isn't the place you expect to get good sushi. However it was and it was worth it. There's also cocktails, and there's hibachi if not wanting any sushi though. Chill looking place as far as the inside. It has tables, or you can go sit at the counter and watch sushi being made. There's a TV behind the counter, and it had a Japanese cooking show on with them making some crazy stuff. Besides the food, there's a few cocktails. It's about $7 for the Yaba Margarita. This is gold tequila, sweet and sour, and triple sec. As for the rolls, these can vary in quality level. It's about $4 for the more basic ones like the Cucumber Roll. It's about $6 for the more complicated ones like the Vegetable Lover Roll. Has more stuff in it. This one has asparagus, avocado, cucumber, and lettuce. Has a ton of sushi of course, but there's plenty more to get, cocktails and something to eat. It's a lot better than it looks, even with it being in a strip mall, having an all around good menu. Not even close! However, for what's available within the area, the quality far exceeds Zen, I Luv Sushi, or Shogun. The ambience is simple and quiet. It does get pretty busy on the weekends. The presentation is simple. They're not trying to hide anything or compensate for anything, which I sincerely appreciate. The service is hit or miss and is an area of improvement. We were very pleasantly surprised at Yaba! It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside it is pretty modern and upscale while still being casual and relaxed. The food was excellent. We went there for lunch and we felt it was a really great quantity of (quality) food for a small price. I was most impressed with the hibachi but their sushi is also great if that's more your jam. They also have a full bar plus sake options for those that want to get their drinks on. What impressed me most about this place (and unfortunately this is becoming less common these days) was the service and kindness of the staff. We left feeling very cared for and special. Our waiter made sure that all our needs were met and came by several times to check on us. You can tell they really want you to have a wonderful experience and that goes a long way for me. I haven't been back up here since before the pandemic. So I wanted to try it again and wanted to leave a review again. Yummy food! Such a great selection of rolls and also hibachi. The sushi tastes just as good as it did before the pandemic. Very flavorful, I always love the sauces. I was so happy to see this and know that they made it through the last 3 years! Oof, not a great experience tonight. We tried Yaba for the first time but normally go to Shogun or Zen in Beloit. We were seated quickly for a Friday night and ordered drinks which came promptly. Then we ordered sushi and waited. And waited. And watched them fill A TON of takeout orders while we waited 50+ minutes for our food. When the food finally came, it was...underwhelming. And we were starving! Mushy rice on the sushi. Heavily sauced. Our son wanted an avocado roll (for $5!), and the roll was so tiny that it was almost comical (but we couldn't be there another hour waiting for more for him!). Our waitress was friendly but there were no apologies for the wait, no drink refills offered until after we had finished our food and we had to catch her to get the bill. When we left, there were only a couple other tables, so they weren't slammed and trying to keep up (except with the constant takeout orders that took priority). Would not be back. Coming from California I had hi hopes for this place because of some elite reviews, but was sadly let down and glad I made the decision to stay clear of anything raw. Only doing takeout which is fine, you can order at the window or by phone. We ordered at the window wait was not to long, about 25 minutes. Food was lacking flavor just covered in sauce. Calamari was definitely frozen and over fried, the rolls were just ok not fantastic and some fried ones were over cooked. Gyoza was pretty much our only favorite, actually throughout all the leftovers and I never throw away sushi. Maybe there other menu items (not sushi) is better. If we are ever in the area again I would try it again but stay away from the sushi and try other items. read more

This is some of the best sushi in the area hands down. I am always very impressed with this place from food quality, to friendliness and cleanliness. I lived in Chicago for 4 years and Yaba could hold its own against many of those sushi restaurants even. The quality of fish is spectacular the salmon literally melts in your mouth. They are also always very efficient and take sanitation very seriously and I think that's especially important for an establishment that deals with raw food. After a bad experience getting baked sushi (seriously) when I wanted raw at another place in Rockford recently, I really appreciated the menu layout, which made it very easy to differentiate based on your preferences. Considering we went on a Wednesday at lunch time around 11:30, the service was pretty slow (took about an hour and a half from when we sat down for sushi order and dessert) but that was really my only complaint. So, two of my friends and I went to Yaba to try it out. We've been waiting for it to open for a little over a year, since we've been waiting for a good sushi-centered place around here for a long while. Given our anticipation, we were definitely not disappointed! We each ordered a different Yaba Chef Signature Roll. I ordered the Dancing Eel Roll and my friends ordered the Godzilla Roll and the Rockton Sunset Roll. The waitress was very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. It didn't take too long for our sushi to come out, and it all looked divine! (Unfortunately, we got caught up in the moment, and I forgot to take pictures of it. Sorry!) They served us the 3 rolls of sushi on a little boat, and gave us each little square plates so we could serve ourselves whichever we wanted. I can't say enough good things about how delicious the Dancing Eel Roll was: The shrimp tempura was the perfect crunch with a wonderful mix of cream cheese, avocado, eel sauce, and spicy mayo. That with the BBQ eel and cucumber made it a roll I plan on ordering again in the future! The Godzilla Roll was pretty darn good in itself: the combination of crabstick, BBQ eel, and boiled shrimp made for a nice, hardy roll, and the avocado, cucumber, eel sauce, and spicy mayo added a welcome, creamy texture and flavor to the roll. The Rockton Sunset Roll was the most unique of the 3 we ordered. Made up of mostly salmon (with roe), this roll had a very fresh taste. The sprouts added a nice touch to, not only the look but, the flavor. With the addition of avocado and mayo, this made for a good seafood treat. All in all, we were all very happy with our choices. Now, for the first time going out to eat in a long time, we managed to save enough room for some dessert. I had Green Tea Mochi Ice Cream and my friends had Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream and Lava Cake. (I DID remember pictures of those, at least!) In our lives, we have NEVER had Mochi this delicious! I could have just chowed down on the Mochi alone, all day, and they were served with a nice dollop of whipped cream, which just was (if you'll pardon the joke) the icing on the cake! As for the Lava Cake, it was not only the perfect amount of chocolate, the cake part and the "lava" part, where it wasn't too rich, but the whipped cream helped balance the chocolate flavor perfectly, as if you were having a nice glass of milk with a soft, fluffy piece of cake. The portions were just enough to top us off from the sushi, too. Overall, we all cannot wait to go back and try other things. I feel like I've been waiting forever for this place to open. It was worth the wait! The food is excellent, prices are decent, and the staff is great. I had the crab roll, shrimp tempura, miso soup, and ginger salad. My wife had the spicy yellowtail, spicy salmon, and spicy tuna, also with soup and salad. To put things simply, everything is as good as Zen in Beloit, and far exceeds both Shogun and JMK in terms of taste. In terms of the environment, I think Yaba is very nicely done inside. It's pretty quiet too, and as someone who is 6 and a half feet tall, you can't see over the booths very well, which is great for privacy.They could use more plants (how about some large palms or photos above the bar?) And the lights on the booths in the middle seem over the top. Besides that though, the interior is great. Not first date or business meeting worthy, but definitely good for a small group of friends, co-workers, or casual date night. We have gotten consistently poor service at Yabba each time we have eaten there, and tonight was perhaps the worst. We enjoy the food, which is why we return, but after this experience, I think we are done. After being seated, we waited15 minutes for someone to take our drink order. It took equally as long for our drinks to arrive, so we ordered food right away so that we weren't there longer than needed. We waited no less than 45 minutes for 3 rolls to be delivered, only to have one of the rolls be wrong. Not only did the waiter argue with my husband about what he ordered, he did not adjust the price of the bill whatsoever. We had one evening to spend with our daughter and my husband did not want to put up a fuss, so we dealt with it with class. However I find it extremely rude and unprofessional the way that we were treated. I hope that this review will save others from the poor service we have experienced at Yabba Sushi. read more

This is my second time here and WOW!!! If you are in the area and have never stopped by--get over to Yaba ASAP! My first experience was over 2 years ago when I was preggers and having a date night with hubs. The food and service were excellent! Somehow, we waiting all this time for a second visit. We just kept forgetting about this place until I drove by after a Walmart trip and it was back on my radar. We recently stopped by for takeout and this place is very covid-conscious, which is a plus. We ordered a myriad of things: Chicken Stirred Fried Egg Noodles, Hibachi Vegetables, Tuna Martini, Vegetable Stirred Fried Egg Noodles, Vegetable Fried Rice, Happy Buddha Rolls, and Sweet Potato Rolls. We waited to be seated and then waited for over 15 minutes before someone approached us again. Although we were ready to order they were only prepared to take our drink order at that time.
