TL;DR: I wanted a unique sterling ring, but paid the price of a gold one and received an unidentified, unstamped amalgam that's turning my hand the color of swamp muck. If I'd rated Yaf Sparkle when I first walked out their door, I would have given the shop 5 stars. The pieces are lovely and unique, & the woman who helped me was wonderfully sweet. Plus, since gold isn't really my thing, for a $50 "custom fee," they were willing to pull the stones from a gold ring I liked & put them into an otherwise-identical sterling setting (of the correct size) instead. Back home, as I waited for the new setting to come in, it hit me that if a ring is $300 in gold, it shouldn't be $350 in sterling. Charge me the customization fee, sure, but charge it on top of an appropriate base price. Gold is 6-8x more expensive than silver (by the gram), which means that even if you're comparing 10k gold to sterling silver (0.925), the gold should be at least twice as much. The price for my ring didn't add up. I felt a lot more "3 stars" about Yaf Sparkle then, but I'd already paid...& the woman I'd worked with was so nice...& I really was looking forward to wearing my ring once it came in. Ok, fine: I decided to consider the inflated price a donation to a small business paying LES-level rent, or something like that. I picked up my ring the next week, & at first it seemed to be what I'd expected: two beautiful dark geode halves in a sterling setting, resized to my hand. After a few hours, however, I realized the alignment of the stones was off. They hadn't resized the ring, as promised; they'd just manually squeezed the two stone-ends closer together, which made the ring tighter at the expense of the original design. What finally got me to write a review, however, was this: Two days ago, I moved the ring to a different finger while I was knitting. The fit on that finger was a bit tighter, & when I went to move the ring back to where I usually wear it, I found a dark green line in my skin under the band. I was horrified, & got out my magnifying glass to confirm my suspicion. Sure enough: there's no stamp anywhere on the inside of that ring. I've no idea what silver-colored stuff it's made of, but it isn't sterling silver; I don't even know if it's worth getting the piece appraised. (I've worn sterling rings & pendants daily since junior high school; the only one that ever turned my skin green was one that I wore the (surprise!) plating off of within 6 weeks of buying it from a street vendor.) In short: I wanted a unique sterling ring, but I paid for a gold one and received an unknown, unstamped amalgam that's turning my hand the color of swamp muck. Yaf Sparkle has pretty things & friendly shop employees, but don't buy anything there unless you've given it a very detailed inspection and/or can drop hundreds of dollars (per piece) on novelty items. I LOVE THIS STORE!!!!!!! My favorite jewelry store in nyc! They have the coolest jewelry and tons of different styles. I have a couple of drouzy stone rings from Yaf that I wear everyday and get compliments on them DAILY! The entire staff is so incredibly nice too! I've been collecting jewelry for many years, and when you get to meet the designer, and can also help support a creative local business, it makes the jewelry even more special.
