Ok I see you, Berkeley! While in the area, I noticed across the street from the Telegraph Channing Garage, this beautifully cool building/sign for Layers Superfood Bar. Love the aesthetic. While there is limited seating indoors, this feels like more of a grab-and-go style spot near the Cal Berkeley campus. There were a few students that came through while I was waiting on my order. I grabbed a smoothie and a bowl ~ checking out the menu a bit more thoroughly for next time, I'll order the Bowlieve Me, Baby (Red Dragon Fruit Base) or the I'm So Blue Without U (Blue Spirulina Base). You can adjust your toppings, and there's a checkbox to select the almond granola (GF, vegan) or with no granola. The bowl sizes are small, medium, large (8oz, 16oz, 24oz) and it looks like the smoothies come in one size. For the smoothies you can pick your plant milk (coconut/oat/soy come with a charge). They also serve energy balls that look adorably delicious and eye-catching. The bowls and smoothies are aesthetically pleasing and incredibly nourishing. What a fun find and win for the East Bay if in the area + need for a bit of elevated (and beautiful) nutrition. Smoothie-wise the Strawesome is delish and the Greenergy looks great! You can find parking in the garage across the street (I think the first hour may be free?) or street parking near/around the area with a short walk. Can't wait to know more about this special spot! I wanted to like this place, but it was pretty disappointing. I ordered for pickup, and shortly after placing my order they called to let me know they were out of mango, which every item I ordered included. I appreciated the call and that they offered substitutions, but it's surprising for an açaí/smoothie shop to run out of such a basic ingredient. I ordered the basic açaí bowl with regular granola and no goji berries. Unfortunately, I received chocolate granola and goji berries anyway, so I had to pick them out myself since I'm not a fan. The bowl also looked nothing like the photos advertised, and the açaí itself had a bitter taste. Maybe it was just an off day, but the texture was much icier than the smooth, creamy consistency I was expecting. My friends also weren't very impressed with their orders. The inside of Layers Superfood Bar is super cute and has a really nice vibe, and the woman working there was incredibly sweet. She might've been the owner, I'm not totally sure, but she was so kind and welcoming which honestly made the experience feel really good. I got the Straw Awesome smoothie and I will say, it looked really cute. Like the presentation was definitely there. But the actual drink just didn't hit. It was around $11 or $12 and for that price I expected it to taste a lot better, but it just wasn't good. I honestly wish I had gotten an açai bowl instead because it would've been more filling and probably only a few dollars more, and I feel like I would've enjoyed it way more. So yeah, the place is adorable and the service is great, but the smoothie itself was low-key disappointing and I wouldn't get it again. read more

Cute acai bowl and smoothie spot with a beautiful interior! I stopped by Layers a few weeks ago when they had a collaboration with Pique, a nearby apartment complex, and got to try their Mango Coco acai bowl. The Mango Coco was solid! I liked the combination of mango, granola, chia seeds, and house crumble. The base was a bit icier and less creamy than most açaí bowls I've had, so that's something to keep in mind. That said, the ingredients tasted really fresh, so I definitely give them props for that. I also liked that you can customize your own bowl by choosing whatever toppings you want. They offer three sizes - 8 oz, 16 oz, and 24 oz - which is nice depending on how hungry you are. The inside is really modern and well decorated with cute plants. There is some seating indoors (a few benches and a small counter), but I'd say it's a bit more of a grab n' go spot. Service was fast, even given the event, and the staff were super nice. My acai bowl was very flaky. Surprised no one else has brought this up, there were large ice flakes in it that led to an inconsistent texture that lacked creaminess. I'm not sure if this was purposeful or if the base was not prepared or thawed properly. Nevertheless, the base options and toppings were tasty and fresh. They're also prepared in a very aesthetically appealing manner! Super cute interior that has a decent amount of seating, plants, and cozy lighting everywhere. I look forward to revisiting this place once I come back to Berkeley, it's downright adorable. Really easy to miss as it's right off Telegraph and a bit small in terms of square footage, but don't hesitate to come in and give it a try! read more

Cute açaí place just opened near Berkeley campus so we had to try it out! Tried the class açaí, blue spirulina, pink dragonfruit, and matchanoffee bowls. The owner said the matchanoffee was her favorite and I have to agree. Matcha flavor went so well with the cacao nibs, cacao powder, granola, and crumble. We also tried the berry smoothie which was so refreshing and not too sweet at all! All the ingredients are whole foods, lots of superfoods, seeds, and powders that have high antioxidants, and she uses dates and fruit to add sweetness instead of sugar! The shop itself is super cute, with lots of plants and warm lighting. The owner is so sweet and talked to us about all the ingredients. She truly cares so much about the quality of the food and it really shows. Have already been here twice in one week, might need to come back again to try the rest of the menu! read more

Just tried the Straw Awesome smoothie and it was amazing. This thing is SO creamy and rich. I genuinely couldn't believe there's no dairy in it. It's thick, juicy, and tastes indulgent without any of the heaviness. You know how some vegan smoothies can taste like you're drinking grass? Not this one. It just tastes good.
