Best sushi in New Jersey! I've been to many sushi spots but no place beats Yama Sushi! Glad no many people know it so it's never packed ;)

I was able to catch up on a long overdue lunch with two old friends, and we chose Yama Sushi again. Last time there was late 2022, and we really enjoyed it. It is BYOB, for those who haven't yet tried it. Same experience this time, as they are so welcoming and appreciative of your business. It was lightly attended at 1pm, only two tables taken. They provided wine and beer glasses upon our request, and gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu and make our choices. I chose three cold sushi rolls, and the lobster "cooked" roll for my meal. My tablemates selected a combination of hand rolls, specialty items. Everyone was very much pleased with the time to delivery, presentation, taste. I asked for extra wasabi and was given a generous portion in a bowl. Everything was just perfect, and they surprised us with a plate containing three salmon roll pieces that were "on the house." That so rarely happens, and it really made a great impression on us. Although we agreed to meet at another sushi place next time, it's purely to experience the cuisine of a different venue and no reflection on Yama Sushi. Nice jazz is playing, asked to turn the volume down a bit . Sushi lunch was fresh nicely rolled had the lunch special and miso soup was good with extra seaweed . It's way nicer inside than you'd think from the storefront. Classic interior with wood accents and piano music being piped in. I'd come in here just to relax and unburden myself. And the proprietors are authentically Japanese. The older gentleman on the sushi bar was chatting with his two coworkers in an unhurried tone the whole time. It was so calming. On a Saturday at 2p, there were two 2-tops and two solo diners in the restaurant, with capacity for at least three times that. I started with a green salad with ginger dressing. It was fresh, crisp, and tangy. My mains were a California roll and the popular Jackpot Johnnie roll. The latter is melt-in-your-mouth incredible - spicy and sweet, fresh, and flavorful. Unfortunately, the former was just serviceable. It might've needed wetter rice, and bigger avocado flavor. Overall: Yama doesn't serve the most incredible sushi I've had in Denville, but it's a great place to use a weekend to wind down. read more

The place is nice and average size for a Denville restaurant (around 8 tables plus the bar seating), our server was very nice. We got the miso soup and shrimp shumai to start - miso soup was good, and the shumai wasn't fantastic but it wasn't bad either. The Mountain Lakes roll was good, nothing incredible but the yellowtail was good and it was a light roll, fyi it has 6 pieces on it (it would be good if they'd add how many pieces come in each roll). The Johnny roll was better, it does come with tempura flakes on top so it is very filling, I would recommend trying this one. Overall a good experience. read more

Pretty unassuming atmosphere, plain and simple, and cannot accommodate a larger group. Perfect for a party of 2, or single seats at the sushi bar. They also do not take reservations, and they are BYOB with a liquor store down the street (but cannot be considered nextdoor, may want to oick it uo by car beforehand) Nigiri pieces do come with wasabi underneath the fish, and on top of the rice which is a fairly authentic practice, but caught me off guard. My boyfriend absolutely loved this, but I did need to get myself a simple roll instead. Prices are a little high but the portions are generous. A small to medium sized venue in downtown Denville. Bright modern, yet traditional interior look. There is only metered street parking around, but it appears to be free after 6pm. I didn't pay that much attention to the schedule. Sushi bar seating & table seating, & its BYOB. Fast & friendly staff. I had the Spicy Kani Salad, Blue Fin Chu Toro Sushi, Salmon Sushi, Jackpot Johnnie Roll. Not a fan of for sushi you only get ONE piece for the price. I know, I know, they're not the only one to do this, but I'm always more of a fan of the places where you at least get two pieces. Their Kani salad was a nice change of pace, it was actually more like a salad, than just shredded Kani coated in spicy Mayo. Very good! The Salmon sushi was delicious, so fresh. The Blue Fin Chu Toro, also very good & fresh, but the salmon had it beat. The speciality roll, Jackpot Johnnie was also very very good. It's a relatively small storefront that you could easily enough miss while passing through, and that would be unfortunate. I've been to many sushi places. Ive been to Yama in the past but have not been in a few years. Once the all you can eat trend started I mostly did that while getting sushi because of how great the price is. Since covid, though, all you can eat sadly cannot be done. Got Yama with my family and wow I really forgot how great this place is. Usually after eating sushi I'm super full and this time I wasn't and was question why. Figured out that Yama, unlike some other sushi places, doesn't fill the rolls with too much rice (this is why i usually get really full). Gives all the attention to the fillings and toppings and is definitely super fresh and yummy!!! Cozy little BYO sushi in the heart of D-twn Denville. Naturally, there are Yama-specific specialties such as the Yama-roll and Yama-salad which I personally love. Long time Yama fans will have stories on how some of the rolls were named. The reno is done and looks great. Cozy not cramped. There is a majestic painting and new everything. After reading some of the reviews, I guess every restaurant is going to turn some people off, but I've never had a bad experience at Yama Sushi. In the spirit of openness I've only done takeout, but the sushi is delicious, the special rolls are incredible and filling, and their prices match up with anything in the area. One of my favorites is the Yama Special Salad-it's SO good I get it on a regular basis. Unless we are out and about this is the only place we go if we're getting takeout sushi...and the owners know their regulars. Yum! This is one of my favorite places to get sushi. I might be a bit biased because I know the owner and get some preferential treatment, but even then, that couldn't make up for poor quality food, so my opinion still matters. The sushi here is so so fresh and yummy. I love the yama special salad, which is just iceberg lettuce with pieces of sashimi with a spicy sesame dressing. It's so good. As far as rolls go, the volcano roll is awesome, the crazy dragon roll is delicious, and the sweet potato tempura roll is really unique and yummy. The staff is really friendly and the owners are so nice; don't hesitate to ask for any special rolls if you're feeling creative and want to come up with your own. I prefer to sit right at the bar and watch the sushi masters at work. Plus, you get served quicker that way! The miso soup is typical but always a nice accompaniment with sushi. And if you're in the mood for dessert, order some mochi ice cream! They serve it in a little dish that looks like a shell so the whole thing looks like a scallop still in tact. I doubt they make the mochi themselves, but if you've never had mochi before, it's awesome. It's just a rice cake (wrapped around green tea ice cream, in this case) and it's chewy and awesome. But of course, it's not for everyone. Prices are on par with other sushi places in the area. Also, it's BYO, so you can bring some goodies, if you're so inclined. read more

I'll start by saying that Yama Sushi is the best around hands down! I have eaten sushi at many places across northern NJ and it doesn't get any better than Yama! It's a smaller restaurant but it's always warm and welcoming. the owners couldn't be any friendlier and their staff is always wonderful. You can choose to sit at a table or to sit at the sushi bar and watch the magic happen. Their fish is always fresh and delicious. They have a wide variety of specialty rolls. And if you don't like the raw fish aspect of sushi don't worry there is plenty for you here. From their shrimp rolls to the chicken teriyaki roll. We went there with our family of 5. My one son is in a wheelchair. When the waiter came around to ask what we wanted to drink he counted 4 people and didn't include my son. Then he tried to cover it up by asking my other son if he wanted water. I won't eat in a restaurant that discriminates. read more

Very good sushi!! We only tried 3 rolls but they were all very good. The staff was very nice. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant which is difficult to find but more convenient then looking for street parking. There's about 6 prices per roll so I suggest ordering 1.5-2 per person depending on how hungry you are. We will be coming back here. read more
