I've started coming here 21 years ago and moved away and recently returned. It's a good as I recall and I give it full thumbs up. Fish is fresh and often unique depending on what's flown in overnight. The owner is always there and the staff are very good. First it absolutely wasn't what I expected. My rating is relative because I don't eat Sushi but let's goooooo... the Spicy Bowl was amazing and the miso soup it was my first time going here. The place was nice the ambience was very nice it was super quiet. Clean. The waitress was phenomenal- quick service the bowl was well seasoned and you get to choose your level of spice... I am going back next week for my birthday. There were other choices for non sushi eating folks. Ate here this evening and was thoroughly impressed. The decor and atmosphere is very nice and soothing. The sushi bar is large and can seat maybe 10-12 persons. The ginger dressing is the best I've ever had! They added a black pepper and the result was very good. Strongly recommend giving it a try. I ordered the Cajun tuna tataki as an appetizer. There are six pieces and each was seasoned and seared perfectly! For the main course, I ordered the shushi dinner with California roll. Again, excellent! Fresh and tasty! As I was waiting for the bill, I did observe a sushi chef wipe his nose and continue preparing food without washing his hands. We loved this place, it's small with good vibes, my husband loves sushi and said it tasted very good quality and fresh. He got their pink lady and hot mama special rolls and they were both beautiful and yummy, we ordered more of those at the end. The other apps were also good, noodles and beef were my favorite, bibimbap was 10/10 as well. Service was great everyone was friendly especially towards my baby. The fish to rice ratio for the rolls was great, and they weren't all drenched in sauces - the fish was the star. It is a little pricey BUT you get what you pay for. Zushi Bistro has been on my list of restaurants to visit for years so we decided to head there for a Date Night on Friday night. We arrived at 7:30pm and the hostess asked if we had reservations. I was unaware that reservations were highly encouraged. The hostess mentioned that the restaurant was full and we were okay with leaving since we didn't have a reservation but she mentioned that a few people at the bar were leaving and we would be able to be seated in about 10 mins. Once we were seated, we were quickly given menus to look over. Unfortunately, it took a little while for the waiter to assist us and ask our order but I assumed it was because it was a busy night. I decided to start with the Zushi Soup but I also ordered the Mt. Trashmore Roll and the Spicy Ocean Roll while my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Yakisoba and the Philly Roll. The Yakisoba and the Soup arrived about 20 mins after we ordered it and oh my goodness, the Yakisoba was delicious!!! The stir fried noodles were coated in a slightly sweet sauce, the vegetables were sautéed perfectly and the chicken was very flavorful. The broth in the Zushi Soup lacked a flavor and tasted as if it had been sitting out all day but the chicken and pork dumplings in the soup were great. About 10 mins later, the Rolls were served. The Philly Roll was good but tasted like a typical Philly Roll. The Mt. Trashmore Roll was very good and I enjoyed the salmon that was placed on top. My favorite was the Spicy Ocean Roll, it was everything I thought it would be and more. The Roll consisted of salmon sashimi over spicy tuna and crab topped with eel sauce and spicy mayo! I highly recommend it!!! Overall, we had a pretty good experience at Zushi. Our waiter didn't check on us very often which was disappointing but the food was delicious and I will definitely be returning, with a reservation lol. read more

I've said this before, but there is a huge lack of quality sushi restaurants in Hampton Roads, with the exception of this place, and unfortunately, another one that has lost its owners. The quality of fish here is superb! I often get either the Chirashi or Volcano Bowl and never regretted it. The Rolls have never disappointed and the service here has always been spot on. The first time we entered Zushi we were immediately impressed with the nicely appointed, handsome and tranquil setting. We visited Zushi on two occasions and both times we were very impressed by the quality of the sushi. We've been sushi devotees since the 1980s and this restaurant is definitely in the top three. We had yellowtail, tuna, eel avocado, Fujimaki and salmon skin rolls. All were extremely fresh and unusually flavorful. The octopus nigiri was delicious. Also, what they call the "egg omelette" was moist and beautifully prepared. Next time we will sit at the sushi bar to admire the work of a masters, sushi chef. The only sour note was the Gyoza appetizer. They were tiny, oily, and without much flavor. This was surprising. We tried the green tea and red bean mochi ice cream served with toothpicks, and they were very flavorful and sweet. Looking around the handsome room we admired the amazing entrées and sashimi. The service on both occasions was friendly, helpful, and professional. This is a very special restaurant in Virginia Beach Town Center. read more

The slowest service I've ever experienced in a sushi restaurant. No one walking in for to go orders, maybe 20% of the tables for dining were occupied. It was like everyone, but the bartender was in slow motion and couldn't care less about getting something prepared for a paying customer. Just a painful restaurant experience. Since I can no longer patronize my former favorite sushi joint, I am happy to say I have found a new favorite - if only they were slightly more wallet-friendly. But, the cost is worth the service and quality, so I will happily give you my sushi money every once in a while! I may reconsider my wine choices, which were $8-9/glass. That's a bit steep for me! I dined here last night with a couple of friends. We made an early reservation. The friend who arrived first had her temperature checked, but myself and another friend did not, which I found a little odd. I will say this is the only restaurant I have been in since Covid where a guest had their temp checked. Props to them for being cautious...sort of. Our server was great throughout our meal. She made sure we had everything we needed, but wasn't overbearing as we sat and chatted for a while for a couple of hours. We ordered edamame for the table and it was a great portion for 3 people, with some leftover! My rolls - the Futo Maki & Boston - were considered "large" rolls based on the menu, but together it was the perfect dinner serving for me. Seriously my favorite sushi place right now. We've been here several times but this was our first time sitting at the bar. Got a reservation (word of advice: just always get one) which was good because when we got there it was so packed and they were so busy (per usual bc they're amazing). All the servers we've had were all nice and just great, but we got this one server Zeus this time who we've had before. He blew our mind because he remembered our entire order from the last time we had him. Amazing service! It was nice sitting at the bar and watching the chefs do their magic, it's such an amazing art form. Got to interact with the chef/owner (I think) and he's hilarious and just remained so calm with the endless amount of ticket orders. Even though it was a busy night, we still got our order pretty fast. This time we tried the chutoro (HR), forgot to take a picture of it but IT WAS AMAZING. Our visit to Zushi was very confusing, although not all bad. The ambiance of the place is very snazzy, a kind of higher class type of Japanese restaurant. The hostess and servers were very friendly and welcoming. Our food was good, no major complaints with mine, but it also wasn't anything super special. My friend who I asked to come with me has a soy allergy, which we realize is in everything, but I figured we could manage something like plain sashimi for her. Which she did end up getting, but it was kind of a difficult process. Right now they only do QR code menus, which is normal and fine, but their online menu has no prices. On anything. And it's really hard to navigate, as each part of the menu is a different page. So we had to ask for paper menus just to know we wouldnt be paying an arm and a leg. And prices were very reasonable! But when my friend's sashimi came out, it had pickled veggies and seaweed salad (which was not advertised) and sure enough they had soy in them, and had to be sent back. All of this, plus us taking our time to order and then also getting dessert ended up having us sit there for around an hour and 45 mins. We were just chatting for a few mins after paying for our checks, but then... the manager actually apologized and asked us to leave, because people were waiting on reservations. I realize we were there quite a while, but it was our first "moms night out" together, and in all honesty, I've been around the world, eating at a ton of places, and never have I been asked to leave a restaurant. I had a fantastic meal this evening at Zushi. Sitting at the sushi bar, the service was great. Attentive waitress who even poured my sauce sauce for me! Great to watch the experts as they sliced up some super fresh fish! I chose the sunomono to start and it was a good portion of freshness with a tangy and spicy vinegar dressing and a good serving of snapper, shrimp and cucumber. Delicious. Main course arrived, the sashimi platter. Tuna, salmon, white fish and some of that flounder that was sliced up only a few minutes prior. Nicely presented, very delicious, very enjoyable. Zushi is still a good sushi place, but have noticed a downward trend in what was once my favorite sushi over the last couple visits. My last experience was a not a great one. We went for my birthday and ordered the Omekase. This is supposed to be a chef's selection of the best they have over five courses. It was $60, but I'm fine with spending for something special. This was not special. The first course was a nice salmon sashimi appetizer, very good, but not out of the ordinary. The second course was a bizarre selection of some fried calmari and a huge bowl of edame. Not sushi at all, and a very cheap way to try and fill up the customer. The next course is the only one I would say was in line with what I expected, in a nigiri sampler. The rockfish was really good, but again salmon, tuna, and cooked shirmp were pretty ordinary choices. The next course was a spicy tuna and salmon roll, good but again very ordinary. What was worse was the service. Our waitress left this course sitting on the sushi bar at room temp for over 10 minutes before delivering it to us. This wasn't the first problem we had. She did not communicate at all, just dropped plates in front of us, and when asked what was on a plate, she had to get the manager to explain. We were sitting at the sushi bar, yet had no interactions with the chef during omakase. The final course was an ordinary dessert. This was an overall disappointment, with salmon and tuna over and over again. No uni, no chu toro, etc. With omakase, I expected an experience. What I got was elevated versions of what I can find at Harris Teeter's sushi case. read more

He checked on us regularly and made sure our water cups were always full. We didn't really get an explanation on the menu, but we didn't need it because it's just like any other sushi restaurant. The hostess was also really kind, but I didn't get her name. The appetizers were good too. The beef tatki (i may have misspelled it) was AMAZING. The beef was so good, especially the ones that were cooked rare to medium rare. I almost ate the whole plate by myself! The spicy edamame was also super good. It didn't have a strong kick of spice, but it had just enough for you to keep wanting more. They were also cooked/steamed perfectly. I wasn't the biggest fan of their gyoza though. I think it could've been better. But this place killed it with the appetizers. The quality of the fish were incredible. I loved their salmon. I'm a huge salmon fan and this place is seriously the best in VA near virginia beach area. The other fish like tuna, yellow tail, etc were also really good. Their mochi ice cream comes with two (4 slices). I had the matcha flavor because they were out of strawberry. The other choice was red bean.
