Jumping ahead from 2018 to representing 2024 (as there weren't many that start with Y), Y is for Yamato here on Broadway on the Beach huge outdoor shopping pavilion in Myrtle Beach. During a September 2024 vacation with a group, we went to Broadway on the Beach a couple of times. One of the nights the organizer of the trip wanted to go to a Hibachi place. My girlfriend & I didn't care that much about getting hibachi, and it's pretty expensive as hibachi tends to be. We ended up splitting a good amount of sushi rolls. It was a 3-roll combination, which came with soup & salad. I ate the salad & most of the soup, my g/f tried a couple of bites. We also added calamari, which my g/f ate more of, but she shared some. Everything was delicious. And we still got to see the hibachi show that the cook made, which was entertaining. Most of the group got the hibachi, but we weren't the only ones to not do the hibachi. Our sushi & food in general was solid. We also split a wine, which was good too. Staff was pretty nice, but a couple of things ran a bit slow, but overall it was pretty good service. At the end, we asked if they charge a credit card fee (as a lot of restaurants in Myrtle Beach did), and I had large wads of cash prepared to pay cash everywhere, and I was pleasantly surprised when they said no; so I paid credit here. read more

This was an enjoyable Teppanyaki style Japanese restaurant where the interactive chef cooked directly in front of us. It was very busy when we arrived for an early dinner & I highly recommend reservations as we did. Note, be on time to guarantee your reservation & everyone needs to be present to be seated. There is plenty of free parking. When we arrived we were seated immediately next to a window with a pretty water view. We watched boats & water skiers. Our meals were delicious & it was entertaining to watch our food being cooked. All table side dinners included Clear Soup, which was okay but somewhat bland, a Salad with a yummy homemade Ginger Dressing, a shrimp appetizer that tasted good but unfortunately some of the shrimp weren't clean, Fresh Veggies & Fried Rice, which were tasty & sherbet for dessert. My table side dinner entree was NY Strip & Shrimp for a reasonable price of $31.95. The steak was cooked & seasoned perfectly. Service from the Chef & Server was fine, tho not especially friendly. We visited Yamato while in Myrtle Beach and had an overall okay experience. The restaurant is huge and clearly runs like a well-oiled machine -- service was fast, and they definitely have the system down to a science. That said, the ventilation wasn't the best, and with so many hibachi tables going at once, it got a bit smoky. Our chef felt rushed and didn't bring much showmanship to the table, which was a little disappointing since we had three kids with us. He only did the classic food toss about five times total, while we saw more interaction and flair happening at other tables nearby. Also, we've never had so much rice at a hibachi place -- it was seriously about a pound per person! The food itself was just okay; nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable either. It's a good option if you're looking for a fast hibachi meal in a lively setting, but we were hoping for a bit more entertainment and engagement for the kids. The last birthday dinner it was on the floor, last night it was on the table and crawling up the yum yum sauce container. We walked right in it 4:30 and sat down within a few minutes even though they told us it would be 15 minutes. Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable and made sure to ask all the right questions. The food was delicious. They give you a ton of rice which is nice But I wish the vegetables were cut up a little more finely. Tempura was great especially the variety of vegetables. The chicken was absolutely delicious made with the best teriyaki sauce. I wish they had noodles. The filet mignon was pretty good but it wasn't really my favorite. I have mixed feelings about this place because the experience itself was amazing, but the hostesses definitely left a bad first impression. When we walked in, they were really short and dismissive, almost like we were bothering them by being there. It set the wrong tone right off the bat. Thankfully, once we were seated, everything turned around. Our chef was so fun and engaging, he really made the meal an experience. The food was incredible too with perfectly cooked steak, flavorful fried rice, and some of the best shrimp I've ever had at a hibachi spot. The portions were generous, and the atmosphere around the grill was lively and enjoyable. If the hostesses had been friendlier, or friendly at all, it would have been a 5-star visit without question. I'd definitely come back because the food and entertainment were worth it, but I hope the front-of-house staff improves their attitude for future guests. Food is as expected with Japanese hibachi. The filet was cooked perfectly to order. The scallops were fresh and tender without being gritty. Service was excellent. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our drinks server was over within minutes for our drink and food orders. Because of the hibachi style eating the food was fresh from the cooktop so no issues there. Standard hibachi tricks/entertainment. Ambience is upscale casual. Here it is: It's not only dinner, it's also a show! It was also really fun because they threw food into our mouths. The fire reached so high, but never touched anyone; it was like a water show with fire! The shrimp was cooked very good. My BFF LOVED the teriyaki chicken, but for me the best part was the show of how they cook in front of you. Dessert was delicious; it was sherbet, and our favorite flavor was lime. If you have had good hibachi before DO NOT COME HERE. Rice is gross, steak was cooked incorrectly, scallops were rubbery... this is for people who haven't had hibachi before that don't know better. The woman next to me spilled her salad all over the floor - nobody cleaned it. Multiple servers walked right past it. When I went to the restroom to wash off teens were giggling about the fact the one toilet was literally smeared with feces. And when I told the manager how terrible the food was, how gross the bathroom was, how the steak was cooked poorly, and how the salad on the floor sat next to me longer than the guests she ripped the check out of my hands angrily to discount one drink by 10%. We have always loved this restaurant and visit every year from Ohio. This year I took my two teen daughters and their two friends. I ordered a margarita and when it arrived my daughter asked if she could take a sip. I said yes as I'm her Mom and I allow this occasionally in Ohio. She doesn't drink the whole drink-just a taste. As soon as she took a sip, this insane waiter, Jacob, starts yelling at us from across the table, "I need to see her ID now". The food was delicious and the chef was funny and talented. The server and the hostesses were also very nice. This place is NOT for slow eaters or for someone who doesn't eat much. My 2 year old twins and even my 6 year old pick at their food and don't eat an entire plate of much, so the twins at least tend to share at every restaurant. Tonight my 6 year old also was in the mood to nibble and not eat much. So we decided to order for myself, my husband, and one kids meal. The twins shared and the 6 year old shared mine. We were told only two can share We got charged a share fee for two of the kids who didn't even touch the food. I was not happy, I could've bought more kids meals for that. And then we had the gratuity automatically added to the tab. I had over 20% cash tip ready until I saw that. There were only 5 of us, two adults and three kids. Grabbed dinner at Yamato as it was one of the few restaurants at Broadway at the Beach that you could make online reservations ahead of time, which was huge given the 4th of July holiday. Food was pretty average and nothing spectacular. Hibachi experience was lacking, with our chef just mainly cooking in front of us with little show (began with an initial happy face fire, a few of us at the table caught some cooked chicken, and ended with the onion volcano). He did have some jokes, though. Service was okay in the beginning, but we didn't see our waitress again until after our chef finished cooking when she offered our entire table to go containers. We literally just got all our food, can we actually enjoy it with more beverages?! They definitely rush you here, so it's hard to enjoy your meal/company. A credit card fee of about $5 is applied to your bill and there's an automatic 18% gratuity added regardless of your party size. Gratuity is also based on the added credit card fee and tax, and not just the food/beverages you actually purchased so tips ends up being a more than 20% for non-existent service and a waitress who wasn't familiar with items on the menu. With so many other restaurants at Broadway, I suggest skipping this one and just dealing with the possibly long waits. Also, skip the frozen drinks which were lacking in alcohol. read more

We had a reservation but be aware you need everyone in your party to be there before you sit down. The food is great here with standouts being the gyoza, clear soup and fried rice. The chef wasn't as talented as some of the others I've watched but it seems like the quality of chef varied as some others where doing more advanced tricks. He was still very funny and a good chef! The waiters where also very nice people and even helped us celebrate my birthday! Very fun restaurant but be aware it can be a little bit of a struggle for large groups. read more
