My family and I eat bento boxes from here for dinner pretty regularly! When you order to-go (you're only option because they still don't allow dine-in due to COVID), you are a little limited in the pick-up area. However, I will say they are pretty efficient in getting people in and out. I usually get the chicken or shrimp teriyaki bento box with the shrimp shumai and I can't remember what roll. Both the teriyaki and the basic rolls the bento box come with are just okay. More specifically, the sushi rolls you can choose from are nothing to write home about. The STAR of the bento box is the shrimp shumai. Since I've tasted them at Yami, I've been looking for them at all of the sushi places I eat at now. Very delicious! The boxes also last you for at least 2 meals- maybe lunch twice? read more

It can be really hard to find decent hibachi that doesn't cost more than $25 a plate. Yami Japan has pretty decent portion sizes. I had the steak and shrimp hibachi for dinner. Everything was seasoned and cooked well. I prefer to pickup the food instead of dining in because the dining room is pretty small, but I've noticed it seems to stay pretty empty if you did want to dine in. read more

I've been coming here for 12+ years, and this has always had a 5 star review because it is the best hole in the wall family owned small business. It was always priced well, with everything on the menu super affordable. But I'm sure COVID has hit the small business, and the indoor seating has gone away. It is now take-out only. I thought it was a COVID-era change that would go back to normal after a while, but here we are in November 2022, and the business is take-out only. I was really upset about this because I have so many fond memories in this place. I've watched the staff's daughter grow up in the restaurant, doing her homework in a back table while her mother worked and waited tables. I hope they are both doing ok. They are located in the tiny strip with Red Crawfish and Jersey Mike's. I absolutely love this place. I hate going to expensive hibachi restaurants when I could literally come here and spend maybe $10. I always get the bento box with shrimp hibachi noodles and instead of the rice that comes with it, I get extra veggies. It also comes with a sushi roll. All of this is around $8-9!! The noodles are pretty much lo mein noodles. I've dined here before, and they give full-service dining. Food comes out pretty fast too! read more

This is an underrated Japanese food gem. From the first time, I am always satisfied. They have many choices and they are all very tasty. Their service was efficient and courteous. I prefer the teriyaki or hibachi plates as opposed to the noodles. If it's your first time I suggest you go for the hibachi/teriyaki place. Enjoy because it's pretty delicious ! I cannot begin to start regarding the food at this place. If you want pseudo (fake) Japanese food come here. I ordered a daily "Bento" special at $7.95. I asked for the vegetable tempura and spicy tuna sushi combo which comes with fried(?) rice, vegetables, a drop of wasabi and a drop of ginger. I have never seen this little served on a plate before. I had to ask for a little more. The rice I believe was supposed to be fried rice ... i couldn't tell if it was steamed white rice tossed with cheap soy sauce or what. It was tasteless and I saw no eggs, veggies nor anything else in the rice. My veggies appeared to have been frozen then steamed with cheap soy sauce and tasted horrible. Another issue I had was that I ordered Vegetable Tempura and got Shrimp Tempura (which cost a little more). I didn't make a deal of it. I was in hurry so I just ate it, paid and left. I did mention it to the cashier who was very apologetic. In all fairness I will say that the Spicy Tuna sushi that accompanied my meal was good! I eat a variety (Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Philipino, Korean, etc) of Asian foods regularly whether home cooked or bought. I hate to say this but the meal here by far was the worse Japanese food I've tasted. I am half Japanese and have eaten it all my life. I go to Yami Japan probably 4-5 times a month for lunch and WILL NOT go anywhere else for hibachi. They have the BEST prices while still using high quality proteins and veggies unlike the "express hibachi" places; still matches their price too!! The just re-opened the interior so dine in is available but i always do pickup since they are near my office and food is always ready when i get there! Jammit! Where's my onion volcano?? Okay, okay, Yami Japan, while they do dabble with their hibachi flavors, they aren't the place to go to if you want to see a shrimp flipped in the chef's hat. That's okay though, so long as the food is good. I visited at noon on a random weekday and it was a pretty busy little shop, with almost no free tables, but they did get me all ordered up and seated in just a few seconds. I tried their Teriyaki steak lunch ($6.99), which comes with the following choices as sides: steamed or fried rice (I got fried), Miso soup with tofu (which I got), or Maki Roll or Cheese tempura First, the positives. The teriyaki steak was super tender, not chewy at all (medium well cook) and had decent flavor. I also enjoyed the Miso soup (more the tofu and green leafy veggies in the miso). I also really liked how they packed my food in a to go box for me because they thought I looked like I was in a hurry (I wasn't, but kudos for the customer service!) Sadly, the rice was pretty uninspiring and flavorless I have to say, as were the cooked veggies, which were kinda limp, but at 7 bucks, I wont complain so much about the deal. Located on the footprint of Sugarloaf mills, Yami Japan is in a little restaurant strip next to Jersey Mike's and Kingston 30. While you'd think parking might be limitless, the actual lot in the area of this strip can and will fill up fast, so you just may have to park on the mall parking lot and walk your way back. No big deal though. Customer service was accommodating, friendly and fast, along with some hits, and a few misses at under $10. Works for me! read more

I really enjoy coming here right after I shop at the mall (it's behind Sugarloaf Mills) . They have a wide variety of fairly priced sushi that come in huge 6-8 pieces for only around $6 and their hibachi is really tasty as well. The hibachi comes with 4 pieces of sushi, meat, fried or white rice, and vegetables. Service is great and the food is awesome! read more

Ordered something really basic lol "salmon roll". Regularly you would get 6pieces from the roll but this is a bit longer~ you get 8pieces. Taste is as expected, not bad but not extremely good. Sesame inside the roll was a good surprise. Staffs are really nice~ service is fast (not sure if it'll be the same if I come in a different time). Place is a bit small but really clean. I just ate here today for lunch with my boyfriend. It wasn't packed for lunch. I wanted to try it since we always pass it on our way to Discover Mills. It is located at one of the entrances to Discover Mills. We ordered an appetizer and off of their lunch section of their menu (Lunch Special Rolls). The lunch special is 7.99 for 2 rolls (or 1 roll and 4 nigiri) and either soup or salad. The Appetizer: Gyoza (8) which are dumplings. You have a choice of either steamed or pan fried. We chose pan fried. It was yummy and crisp on the outside. It came with soy sauce. My boyfriend ordered spicy salmon roll and the crunchy cucumber & avocado roll. I ordered the crunchy California roll and the crunchy shrimp roll. We both chose miso and it tasted like the average miso soup you have at other restaurants. However, I liked the fact that the miso soup here has chunks of tofu and lots of kelp. The sushi rolls were "a-ok". Not the best; however, it's not the worst. It was just average. This is a great place to eat lunch at if you are in the area and is craving sushi at a great deal. read more
