Man, this place consistently impresses me. Whether it's sitting at the sushi bar or at a table for lunch , the service is always punctual and friendly , from start to finish. I went for lunch today and tried the sushi and sashimi lunch special, it was the perfect size and most of the "thinking" is done for you . It is the usual suspects, tuna salmon shrimp etc. for the sushi part and the sashimi was a big portion of salmon and tuna. The fish was delicious and buttery across the board! I always like to start with the seaweed salad and the waitress easily allowed me to sub the salad for the normal house salad (additional cost but totally worth it and not by much ). The lunch specials are way affordable and frankly the best deal I've seen for sushi in awhile !! Sadly, we have noticed the quality and freshness of the fish have gone down. The last time we dined in, there was a really bad bathroom smell (like a porta potty). And we left over half of our rolls and nigiri uneaten because they tasted off. We were really hoping it was just that one night but unfortunately it has been the past two or three times that we were not happy. You can tell if fish is fresh by the smell, texture, and of course taste. It used to be so good it makes me so sad to see it go downhill. It's all about the lunch specials here. Good prices and huge portions! Their bento boxes are easily 2 meals in 1. They also have many options for sushi lunches. A weekend happy hour is a nice touch as well (they are closed Sunday). The sushi fish is not the most flavorful I've ever had, I'd say it's about 3.5 stars. This is my absolute favorite sushi place to go to. Not only is it next to the gym we go to (ha ha!) but the sushi is delicious. We usually order a roll or two and share and the bento boxes for the kids are a great deal! We hope to go back soon !! The service and blow fish carried the whole experience, but overall the fish quality was pretty poor sadly. Probably won't be back because one of the sushi chef was also very rude in front of customers saying to another worker "you have worked here for a month get it together" and some other remarks. "You want to know the difference between a master and a beginner? The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried." After a couple of years of cajoling my Yelp friend Michelle C to teach me about sushi, we finally had a lunch date here earlier this year. She loves Yanagi, which is within striking distance of her work. Better yet, it's also a stone's throw from the homestead for me. "No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher. Teacher say, student do." Michelle is a great teacher. She went easy on this gringo, knowing that a full dive into raw sushi would probably mean I would never try again. I went with her recommendation of cooked rather than raw. She recommended Yanagi's roll combinations off their lunch menu, which are all no more than $11.95 and include a California roll. Great, inexpensive lunch menu, by the way. "It's OK to lose to opponent. Must not lose to fear." I feared raw sushi, and Michelle sensed that. I tried one bite of nigiri and sashimi each that Michelle offered. It was okay, I just have to develop a taste for raw. But this day I won just by trying. "Man who catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything." I can catch flies, but not with chopsticks. I think I've been successful with chopsticks and food exactly once, and this wasn't the day. Luckily, they also have forks at Yanagi. "Lesson not just sushi only. Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better." OK, so Mr. Miyagi actually said "karate", not "sushi". I approached Yanagi as a lesson in sushi. I came away with a lesson in life. Life includes sushi. Everything is better with sushi. "Wax on, wax off." This has nothing to do with sushi, Yanagi, or Michelle. I just like the saying. Yanagi and Michelle, thanks for the sushi tutorial. Although I haven't been back since, I shall return. The restaurant is attractive, the food I exceptional and the wait staff is always top notch. Tonight we had Grace waiting on us and was so attentive, warm and professional. My husband and I met a couple of friends here for dinner one night. We originally tried to go to another place in the shopping center but we were on a time crunch and didn't have time to wait the 45 min-hour wait at the other place. Luckily Yanagi there was no wait. We were immediately seated and the waiter began taking out order. My husband and I decided to get the Yanagi Boat to share, which has a couple of rolls, sashimi and the salad on it. I could not be more delighted that Yanagi has opened so close to my office. FINALLY, a place nearby where I can grab a delicious sushi lunch! Huge thanks to Stephanie S. and Tara M., whose reviews led me to this pot of sushi gold at the end of the rainbow. There are a wide variety of very reasonably priced lunch specials here. They offer a selection of bento boxes in the $9-$14 range, and a great selection of sushi combos - you can get five pieces of nigiri with your choice of one of eleven (!!) different rolls for $14.95 or less...and you get miso soup AND salad with it! I noticed there is a similar combo on their dinner menu with eight pieces of nigiri and your choice of one of eight rolls for $23, which I thought was also very fairly priced. The menu also offers quite a few other interesting options - udon, yakisoba, tempura, chirashi, salads topped with sashimi that would be terrific for low-carbers, and, of course, the mandatory teriyaki. There are even a few Korean items on the menu, including galbi (Korean beef ribs), bi bim bap and bulgogi. I tried the lunch sushi special with the firecracker roll, which is a mix of scallops and cucumber, topped with spicy tuna, jalapenos, masago, and house mustard sauce. The firecracker roll was HUGE - eight large pieces - and delightfully spicy - so much so that I had to break it up with pieces of nigiri (and I like really spicy food). The slabs of nigiri were cut very generously, and I so appreciated that they did not give me a hard time about doing a substitution when I requested raw fish in lieu of shrimp nigiri. There were a few minor things that prevented this from being a perfect food experience. I thought the miso was a little watery and not flavorful enough, and felt the same way about the salad dressing. Also, the spicy tuna that topped the firecracker roll was of the chopped variety, which always feels a little chintzy to me, as if the tuna wasn't fresh enough to serve whole. However, I didn't detect any lack of freshness at all in any of the fish I ate, including the nigiri, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this. It's not, say, Musashino, but it certainly holds its own amongst the field of choices here in landlocked Austin, which earns it five stars given its better-than-average pricing, the generous portions, and the relative dearth of Asian food in this part of town. Quite possibly in part due to the fact that there weren't many diners when I was there, service was extremely attentive. I'm pretty sure no less than six people thanked us as we got up to leave the restaurant. The decor is surprisingly elegant considering its strip center location. If you haven't yet checked out Yanagi, it's definitely worth a visit. I'm looking forward to eating many a lunch there; please give them lots of business to ensure that I get that opportunity! read more

I visited this place for the first time today. It was one of the few sushi places that was open for late lunch in my hood. Service was great and the ambience was alright. But right now I'm suffering from some awful indigestion from this place. We ordered a couple of miso soups and the Idaka (baby octopus) app to start. The miso was standard. But oh... the Idaka. The presentation was so unappetizing- a circle of baby neon pink octupi around a pile of daikon and pickles. When the waitress brought them out, I watched these little guys wiggle to the motion of her bouncy steps. The little octupi still danced around the daikon bonfire as she set the plate down on our table. I had to stop to take a photo. Funny enough for Instgram- but not appealing enough to eat. Despite my reservations, I shoveled the little octopus into my mouth whole. It was sadly overcooked and super chewy. I'm preggo (again) and was limited to eating cooked rolls. So we ordered the Tarantula roll (a dressed up spider roll), and some crunchy roll with calamari tempura as well as crab on the inside. Both rolls were covered in eel sauce. I've had sushi all around the world and am familiar with the smokey, savory and slightly sweet flavor of eel sauce. But something about their eel sauce is incredibly off and sickeningly sweet. Not good. The tarantula was also loosely rolled. As soon as I picked up a piece, it unraveled like a magic carpet of sticky grains. I don't think I will return. **Update after 7 hrs: Avoid this place! I'm downgrading my review to one star. We got good poisoning from eating here! :-( read more

SOOOOOOO good. I was so happy when we took our first bites of the amazing sushi that is Yanagi's sushi...I was worried that it was one of those things where, since we didn't have anything comparable in the area, that people were getting a little out of control with their reviewing and therefore giving it 5 stars when it didn't really deserve them... how wrong was that assumption, you ask??? dead wrong. The boyfriend and I shared three different rolls, each with a different type of sauce and presentation.... 1. Spicy Scallop Roll: Perfect, fresh taste. To me, it was the perfect amount of spice combined with amazing flavors with the fresh scallops (noticeable chunks!) and veggies.... 2. Texas Roll: This one was a very cool mixture. I couldn't even tell you right now what all was in it other than deliciousness....the sauce was the perfect compliment to the seafood flavors...without being overwhelming. That's an art as far as I'm concerned...too many times, a dish is ruined by the sauce it's drenched in.... 3. Baked Dynamite Roll: this was orgasmic....really....i'm not lying. I took one bite and melted into my chair...it was like finding something you never knew existed....it was that good. Again, not sure what exactly was in it...but when I asked the waiter if he thought we'd like it, I got 3 thumbs ups....and a "ohhhh yesssss it is my favorite!!!" so, yeah....get it. Everyone is extremely friendly. Our waiter had a very thick accent, but that didn't keep us from understanding one another and he was very very attentive without hovering.....i asked for water at one point and he galloped to get it.....very eager to please....which is how every waiter/waitress should be! I love the inside of the establishment....lots of dark wood makes it really cozy....I'm interested to see if they put up anymore decorations on the walls, they were pretty bare... right now it is BYOB....and lots of people were taking advantage of that the night we were there....I plan on going back, for sure! read more

We tried Yanagi at 7 p.m. on a Friday night. There were several families, but it wasn't hoppin'. The miso soup, which is complimentary, and the edamame was good. We tried several specialty rolls - Crunchy Calimari was awesome, but the Diablo and Baked Dynamite rolls had too much stuff piled on top. They were difficult to pick up with chopsticks because they fell apart. There were so many flavors, that I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to taste. Quick update. Although I hate the fact that their sashimi salad became a micro-plate, I just discovered a new dish that you just HAVE to try. It's what my old favorite Korean Sushi place in Oakland called a sashimi salad. At Yanagi, it is called a Hoedeopbap. It is basically a bibimbap bowl, except with raw fish cubes with seaweed and bonito flakes. It is FANTASTIC! They do not serve it with egg, though, but you can get them to put some raw quail eggs on top -- totally worth it. It is kind of expensive - a few dollars more than my favorite place in Oakland, but they make it very nicely. It is a nice bowl of food. One of the few dishes lately at Yanagi that actually make a meal. (And I am a relatively not-very-big female). Yanagi is back in my good graces. read more

The waiter was slow and had no idea what he was doing. Needless to say I don't think he works there anymore. One great thing about this place was that you could bring your own alcohol. No more though, they got their license and serve their own booze. Drinks are not terribly overpriced but definitely not as fun as bringing your own. We were seeking a different resturant off William Cannon there are so many to choose from so we notice a Japanese Resturant in a shopping mall so we stop and parked. We noticed how very busy it was but seated right away.. The hostess then told us just as I sat down that is was going to be a wait for our dinner. Then we thought should we leave but some of the tables were not all taken but every waiter and waitresses were running around in a big hurry like bunch of chickens without a head. We ordered the kiwi Sake delighted with the taste. We order the Spicy Garlic Edamame instead were given the regular order not the spicy. The Agedashi Tofu was delicious which is a fried tofu with Tempura sauce. My husband ordered the Bibimbab. It was not my liking except for the fried egg on vegetables and beef over steamed rice. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki was too well done which in fact has to be pink in the middle which was not it also had mushrooms and onions on a hot iron plate. I really love many types of Japanese dishes but left me thinking there is got to be more to this meal. One pro was the dessert amazing I give five stars which I loved. The dessert was the Dezato Maki ......A ice cream roll with pound cake topped with kiwi and your choice of either mango, green Tea or vanilla. I recommend the mango incredible. This review is for takeout ramen and a kids meal during COVID. Let's start with the great. The kids meal was awesome - we got teriyaki chicken, orange slices, rice, and tempura shrimp! The portions were generous for a kids meal. My two year old devoured it. The ramen, on the other hand, was a mistake. My husband got the regular, and I got the spicy. The regular broth was basically miso soup. The spicy broth had no flavor except spicy. It's hard to make good takeout ramen, and it's even harder to have good ramen when the rest of the menu is so extensive. I feel like we ordered the equivalent of a burger at a taco stand and wondered why it wasn't good. I would try this restaurant again for their sushi or dinner plates, but this isn't the place for ramen. read more

In their signature rolls menu, there are only two that don't contain something fried or aren't full of spicy mayo, so getting something light is a challenge here. What I did choose from that menu- the Three Times a Lady roll- was delicious. We also had the Philadelphia roll, and some sushi pieces, and all were pretty good. Service was decent from our server but slow to get waited on at first and the host promised our chopsticks and napkins and never came back with them. They also have my favorite brand of plum wine. I've been here 2 times now and have enjoyed it tremendously each time. First time I sat a table with some friends and the second time I sat at the sushi bar. I recommend the sushi bar...the experience is so much more enjoyable because the chef's are fun to interact with! Plus they will make you a orange bear as seen in the photo section.
