I have heard of this place from friends for a while now, and finally had a chance to try out their food. This place offers Southeastern Chinese (or Huaiyang) cuisine (one of my favourite cuisines) which is famous for maintaining the original flavour of the food instead of using too much seasoning and perfectness in tenderness of the meat dishes. The dishes here were solid with pretty appearance which really stimulated my appetite. However, price was more expensive than most Chinese restaurants in town. Most dishes were more than $35. Expect $40-50+ per person here. We tried the duck appetizer, fried shrimp and fried gourd with edamame. The duck was a bit sweet to our taste, which was the signature flavour of Southeastern Chinese cuisine. The fried shrimp was really tender and had perfect flavour and thickening. This is the dish that really showcased the chef's solid fundamentals. The veggie dish was also cooked alright. I might come back trying their other dishes once I make more money. read more

Adorable mom and pop Chinese restaurant. Small restaurant but mighty taste! This restaurant is on the smaller side so make sure to call in advance to make your reservation! I came with a larger party of 7 people with a reservation in advance and the restaurant was packed. To start, the tea pot has many ingredients in it, not just tea leaves, which added a nice different taste to the pot. Food items we got: Tofu soup 9/10 - came with small threads of tofu - it was interesting to see the item, nothing that I've seen before (refer to photo). Came in a portion that is good to share Jellyfish App 8/10 - refreshing and light. On the smaller side but still nice to share Shrimp dish 8/10 - it's literally an entire plate of shrimp with a nice sauce. Great for sharing Honey spareribs 10/10 - packed with bold sweet flavours. The meat on the spareribs were fall of the bone delicious! Garlic veg dish 8/10 - your standard Chinese vegetable dish. On the smaller side XLB 10/10 - on the sweeter side from most other Shanghainese XLB restaurants but still delicious. Had lot of soup inside the dumpling Whole duck 10/10 - absolutely delicious and nicely fried to perfection. It's expensive, but worth it! Soup noodle 7/10 - Nothing special and can probably skip on this dish if needed Egg white shrimp 10/10 - another Chinese classic dish that is a must get. Super simple and delicious Rice cakes 8/10 - this was okay Pan fried buns 10/10 - crispy on the bottom, juicy on the inside. Came piping hot and so good! Overall the food was good. The portions were small, and the dishes were expensive. I would still come back for more though. Take note that they have candies at the front of the entrance for you to take, along with some pastries that are FOR PURCHASE! Came here because my friend wanted the braised pork dish. The menu is all in Chinese, and I didn't see an English version. They were accepting delivery orders so you can look at their menu on ubereats. The braised pork dish definitely lived up to the hype. It was so soft, so flavourful and really love the flavours with the preserved veggies. It was an amazing dish with rice. We ordered a few other items like eel, sang ji bao, pork chop and the flaky meat bun - they were good but not must order. This place is pricey in my opinion and service was average. I'm glad I got to try this place and will crave the braised pork dish again, however everything else left me wanting more. read more

We came to give this place a try on two separate occasions and found the portion wasn't exactly large but a bit on the smaller size and pricing is a bit more upscale. You're surrounded with a bunch of plants and high rise tables. This place isn't exactly toddler friendly as their washroom is singular for each gender only. They start you off with some good tea and the tea pot they use is of good quality. The little starter app they give you consist of edamame with little veggies seasoned nicely which you can ask more if you like. The dishes we tried here were the following from our two visits: Mapo Tofu in Hot in Spicy Sauce- $22 - There is some spice taste flavouring and we'd say the portion and taste is good. Bean Curd + Meatball Duck Vermicelli Soup-$32 - The bean curd skin wrapped with stuffing inside was tasty and the soup broth taste is mild. Xiu Long Bao w/ Crab- $18+ - Good quality about 6pcs with good amount of juice inside. One of the better juicy pork dumpling with crab Toisan Vancouver Crab with sweet paste sauce- FREE if you spend over $100 on your first visit for limited time only. - Its a different sauce base then we're used to, but nevertheless, the taste is appetizing and enjoyable. Though the crab seemed a bit small but it tasted fine. Xiu Long Bao with pork- $15+ - This is similar to the crab one but just pork and was tasty as well. Brown Sugar Braised Pork Belly- $30+ - Taste is good but portion is average to small, but the braised pork belly was nice and tender and the fat is a bit solid and not melt in your mouth feel. Overall this place is a bit more upscale chinese cuisine that has good food, but the price is a bit steep. read more

I am a Xiao Long Bao (XLB) enthusiast, eating every single XLB available in GTA. So, today I only tried their crabmeat & pork XLB, thus my review is quite limited. I had their pork XLB a year ago - although they had crabmeat & pork XLB on the menu, at that time, they only had pork XLB. The pork XLB was too sweet for my liking, but I learned that it is the way it should be for Hang Zhou cuisine. A year later I found that their crabmeat XLB was back - and I went there today! The wrapping was starchy side but thin enough beautifully/carefully pleated, and holds plenty of soup. But I wished there was more crab flavor standing out over pork. It was a bit too sweet to my liking just like the pork XLB. $16.99 for 6pcs felt too expensive for my flavor preference. The atmosphere of the restaurant was quite unique - welcoming with nice jazz music and they have a beautiful patio in a hidden, quiet quarter, a bit off from the busy Leslie X HWY7 area. I may want to come back for other food items for a more fair review. read more

This is our go to place for any celebration or holidays since a year ago. We liked all their dishes, all very tasty and one of kind, not the same as what other restaurants can offer. It is a very small restaurant and located not in a mall, no other shops around. But it doesn't stop people coming, although the price is high, keeps increasing price, but still always full when it is dinner time. So we always go there around 4 pm so that we can have a seat. I just want to get it out of the way:You need a lot of patience and you would be rewarded with yummy food! Kitchen was really slow even when the restaurant was not busy during my visit. There are not many restaurants in GTA that specialized in Hang Zhou (杭州) Cuisine so their menu is unique. I enjoyed the items I ordered, the taste is clean and refreshing, light and delicate. I can tell the owner really have pride in what they offers. The plates, the utensils and even the music choices. Yan's Kitchen has this "private" home kitchen vibe. I would avoid coming here when the restaurant is busy. I don't think the kitchen is ready to handle the rush. I came into this restaurant expecting to have found a hidden gem, however it's not much of a gem at all. The restaurant itself is small and very busy and they put the tables really close to each other, which felt uncomfortable especially near the aisle. We ordered a fish dish. They did not have enough, so they suggested noodles cuz portion was less. Those noodles were good however it came out to be $16.99 for a small bowl of noodles and 1 piece of fish. Definitely overpriced. Next we got the pan fried buns. 3 of the buns were smushed and didn't look very appetizing because of the way they plated it. After came the crispy fried duck. The duck itself was crispy; however, they gave us the head of the duck, and by doing so, we got significantly less meat compared to all the other customers. Not sure if they are picking favourites but this is totally unfair to us to pay the same price for less. Next we got sauted pea sprouts. The original vegetables we wanted they did not have (already the second time they said this). Would not recommend, as it was super oily and bitter. Next we got spare ribs with rice cakes. I'm not sure if this combination goes well together. The sauce was a little salty but it tasted pretty good with the ribs, but not so much with the rice cakes. Lastly, we had braised meatballs. Sauce was good, meatballs were good... The only dish here that I would recommend. We tried to place an order for one more item afterwards. After waiting 10 minutes, we followed up and they told us the order was in. Again after 20 we followed up again and they reassured us again. After waiting over 30 minutes, we followed up again and then they finally went to check in the kitchen and came back to tell us that they gave it to another table by mistake. Wasted so much of my time because they were disorganized. Overall, average food for above average prices. I don't feel like anything was worth coming back for. read more

Su Dongpo, the famous poet, calligrapher and jack of all trades once said, "That even the most delicious food in the world could not compare with tasty Hangzhou Food." So without trekking our way to Hangzhou, we have a rare Hangzhou style restaurant here named Yan's kitchen in Richmond Hill. The English name really doesn't do its poetic Chinese restaurant name (Jin shui, Jiang nan) justice. Hangzhou food is known to offer light, fresh and slightly sweet flavours. So how did Yan fare? I'd say ok to so-so while understanding that there are limitations to the availability of certain ingredients in Toronto. First the Sanji bao... the appearance looked great but the taste was ok but probably not what most of us would expect. The texture of the bun is more chewy than bready. The bottom was fried decently but not fried enough to provide enough crunch. The interior of the bao had ample soup and had a simple sweet taste to it. Their so called Best Dish in the World is actually puffed rice with a tomato sauce on it topped with shrimp, squid, corn, green peas and broad beans. Given that Hangzhou dish is notorious for showcasing the freshness of ingredients, the food cost/ accessibility of ingredients prohibited them from truly creating an authentic Hangzhou dish. While the dish is ok, the ingredients are all frozen. The peas and broad beans are also undercooked. The dish is definitely not the best in the world. The last item braised Shanghainese meatball actually had quite a delicious sauce but on the salty end. I thought Hangzhou food was supposed to be light (but I guess it is Shanghainese style after all which is supposed to be sweeter than Hangzhou food... so it's ok?). While the dish is a good pairing with a bowl of white rice; eating the meatballs alone can be a bit too salty for most people's liking. And all you get for $16 are two meatballs and a few bok choys ... that's a bit pricey. If I happen to return to Yan's in the future it would probably not be based on a personal choice. I guess the addition of a new cuisine style is never a bad thing? read more

It is an insult eating at this restaurant. They must be thinking all the consumers are idiots! Their foods taste are very average, however, the price for each and every dishes are enormously expensive! If you have rare and very expensive ingredients, it make sense to charge a little more. But 1 meat ball with crab powder in soup is $28 ?!!! No matter how you argue it, it is an insult for consumer ordering it! Portion is small too! 1/2 Crispy duck is small (but tender) and it is $38 ? Their plate is big though. 4 pieces of small buns are $17!!! Bowl of soy sauce onion noodles is close to $20 after tax??!! Nowhere else charge like this restaurant. Fried rice is also $28 with only enough for 3 average adults with few dried mushrooms on top!! Taste is very average! No more visit to this restaurant and will definitely not recommend to others to try because the taste of foods are very average and yet price is SUPER HIGH! We still have no ideal why they think they should charge customers these prices. It's a small restaurant, washroom is very small. BTW, playing foreign music (Mexicans, Spanish music) in the restaurant (which doesn't match to what they selling) doesn't mean they have the privilege to charge such ridiculous prices! read more

Yan's Kitchen recently opened at the old So Good restaurant location. They did a great job renovating the place as the previous restaurant felt like eating at a high school cafeteria. However, I would not consider this place upscale. Probably in the same price-point as Chi Star across the street, although I prefer this place as it is way cleaner and more comfortable. Most of the food we ordered was delicious. The steamed veggie and duck marinated in pickle sauce were mediocre. But the Shanghai style meatball and pan-seared pork juicy buns were awesome. Overall, the taste of the food here is very good, not overly salty or greasy. The price is very reasonable as well. The menu selection is a little limited, but will definitely consider coming back to try some other items. read more

After a few days, we are back to try some new dishes. The restaurant specializes in food from Hangzhou, so you'll see often see soochow style on their menu. I am not a fan of cold appetizers, so I would suggest not ordering the shanghai shrimps. But the rest of the dishes were spot on. Our new favorite is the Delicious Mandarin Fish dish. Came here tonight with a reservation for 9 people at 7:30 pm. Seated at 7:45 pm. Looking through the menu took as 15 minutes; served at around 8:30 pm (appetizer 1), 8:45 pm (appetizer 2)...the rest followed gradually around 9 pm-9:30 pm. We ordered 2 dishes that were cancelled by us since we did not want to wait anymore; they gladly concurred. Customer service/attention was negligent due to lack of personnel, yet friendly; the restaurant was packed (since it is very small). We had to ask for our tea/tea cups/napkins/serving spoons/dirty plates to be removed due to negligence. Price-wise: expensive for lack of quality and quantity. Don't order their steamed fish- it is NOT FRESH- frozen- tilapia - (but worded in menu as either croaker or carp) at $23! Tilapia is the cheapest fish available. Ok dishes were: Tofu with pork belly Eggplant Ribs Duck The rest were mediocre for the price they are charging. Overall, people are just curious about their cuisine (bordering on hype). If you really want to enjoy your time here, perhaps, come on a weekday. There really is NO EXCUSE for the negligent customer service, after all, they command high prices for their mediocre dishes. Hire 2 extra hands....at least! They accept credit cards. Background music does not add anything to its casual-dining setting. They use ceramic cutleries all throughout. read more

TLDR - Food is delicious. The services is okay. The venue is where improvements are needed. We arrived early but without reservation. We were seated near the door. We ordered a Lion Head meat dish, a minced pork with bamboo shoots noodle and a cold jelly fish appetizer. Wow! One line crossed my mind immediately - it was Asia quality, at a relatively similar price range as Hong Kong, too. For those who are unfamiliar, HK restaurants are often more expensive than Toronto. But I side tracked. Back to the food - very fresh ingredients, from bamboo shoots to meat. Lion Head (giant meat ball) was tight and moist. The sauce was a tad salty for my liking. I eat rather salty food, so I figured others might find it salty, too. Nevertheless, it worked out well with the noodle. Noodle soup was on the lighter tasting end. High quality bamboo shoots as per Toronto standard (believe me). Very smooth noodle (a simple yet necessary point for a noodle entree). Jelly fish app was the weakest dish of the evening; it was nicely made nevertheless. The venue is where it needs improvements. It was summer and it was stuffy hot inside the restaurant. The outdoors felt cooler than indoors. There was no air conditioning or air circulation where we sat (near the door). There was insufficient air conditioning in the center dining area. There wasn't a fan to circulate air anywhere in the restaurant. We and the table behind us finished dinner quickly to escape the baking heat. The ventilation situation compromised the dining experience. I hope the owners/management remedy the ventilation issues. During my meal, I kept thinking it would have been nice to have a fan in our section. I really love the food here. The cheapo in me doesn't mind the prices either. Food was well executed but the wait for the food is where marks are deducted. Ordered pan fried bao and sweet and sour pork with rice and vegetables. The pan fried bao had a crunchy bottom, incredibly soft bun and juicy filling - simply AMAZING! The sweet and pork was lightly coated and crispy even with the sauce. Portion was HUGE! Unfortunately I don't have a photo of it because I waited way too long (probably around 40 mins) and I gobbled it up because my lunch break was coming to an end. I'll be back for more! read more

First of all, it looks like poorly managed furniture store. The space is packed with all kinds of table and chairs. Especially the big chairs. There are so many of them and they are in everyone's way. (There are four chairs in the washroom. Like huh?) If you have ever been here, you will know exactly what I am talking about. Service is straight up bad. Waiter and waitress are rude as hell. They gave you the faces as if you just slept with their parters. Btw we did not. The service is also very slow. We had to cancel one of our dishes as it have been more than one hour. I don't even want to talk about the actual food. It is below mediocre and overpriced. I would give NO star if there is an option. WORST ever. Waited for 40 mins at 8 pm on a Friday night. A table was cleared 20 mins ago but no one directed us to sit. Then there were those customers having a birthday cake on that table while they sat on another table. Honestly the operation of this place is sooooo inefficient.
