Came on a busy weekend with reservations made in advanced. We still had to wait 15 mins or so before being seated. The space is small but seems like turnaround is quick. Overall, pretty authentic canto dishes with some quality ingredients. Some items I think were really fair priced but others not so much. For example, the oyster mushroom and grouper had 2 small slices of oyster mushroom in it only and portion was not worth $35. The braised beef pot however was really tasty and had good wok hay. This is a nice neighborhood restaurant. Staffs were very friendly and service was quick. We had the special sticky rice stuffed chicken and the winter melon soup. The soup has good flavor however it has not much soup inside. The lobster was decent. The pigeon was a bit dry. Overall the food was ok. Some were good and some weren't. read more

You can easily tell that this place has been around for quite some time. While the inside is relatively spacious, it seems a bit cramped considering its popularity. Despite numerous tables in the dining hall, navigating through the crowd can be challenging. It would be great if they rearranged the seating. The service exceeded my expectations. The staff were patient and friendly, it was the best service I've experienced at a Cantonese restaurant. The food was really good, with lots of options on the menu. The Winter Melon Casserole was fantastic. They used winter melon as a soup container with chicken and shrimp in it. The winter melon was slow-cooked and tasted like puree, and the soup was umami. I heard this dish is so popular that you have to pre-order it. The Pumpkin and Tiger Shrimp Salted Egg Yolk Tempura - Loved it. The shrimp were fresh, and the pumpkin cuts were soft, covered by the thick egg yolk sauce. That's a taste of happiness. The Steamed Jumbo Scallops were highly recommended. The scallops were indeed 'jumbo', so fresh and they literally melted in my mouth. The Deep Fried Milk was yummy too. It was perfectly sweet and not overly creamy. Although I haven't tried many deep-fried milk dishes, this was the best one I've ever had thus far. Their Roasted Chicken and Duck were very well cooked and seasoned. All their dishes were amazing. This is the traditional hongkong style cuisine. We came in Thursday night before 5, got seated immediately . Service is fast, with a busy and noisy setting. Tables are so closed to each other, even my 9 year old boy needs to squeeze in. We ordered a lobster combo (3lbs) +beef cubes, all I can say the quality is above average around 4 out of 5, however the portions are small. Especially Fried Beef cubes with sweet peppers , beef cubes are less than 10, most onions. In addition, they charged 12%service fee as a mandatory tip, which is on top of the bill +tax, I am not a big fan for that. They're not very punctual with their reservations as I've learned from the multiple times I've been here. We were seated in their private room for two big tables. The food i hits the spot for Chinese food! Get the sweet and sour pork - fried to perfection, tossed in a tangy sauce. Usually this wouldn't be too big of a price tag if you order just dishes, but since this was a special occasion we got the king crab and it was so meaty and delicious. The king crab comes cooked in three ways, we got it steamed, some parts fried and lastly in a steamed egg form. Service is good, as they're attentive and quick. Give this place a try, but make sure to make reservations for a larger group. Don't expect to be seated right away though. read more

Surprised at the low average rating for this place. We came here at the recommendation of several foodies and this definitely didn't disappoint! It has quickly become a place we think of for traditional home style Cantonese dishes served with rice and soup. We ordered a set meal with lobster, beef with beans and veggies. Then we added a half chicken stuffed with glutinous rice (most places require advanced order for this). The food was very good. Flavour was on point and service was excellent. They took the time to walk us through the menu and made recommendations on the days fresh seafoods and specials. Only call out is that if you want to pay by credit there is a higher price for the set meals. We didn't find the differential worth it and luckily we had enough cash! read more

As a table of 2, we went to Chi Star just before 6pm on a Saturday without a reservation. We thought we would beat the crowd, but we were wrong. The manager told us people just sat down for a meal and won't be able to get us a table until at least an hour later. We left our name to make a reservation for 7pm and came back around that time. The place was of course still super busy, with multiple parties with reservation waiting in line. We didn't get a table until 7:15/7:20pm, which the manager was pretty spot on when we asked for an update after waiting patiently for 10 mins. It seems like a lot of patrons ordered from "private dining" menu which requires advance reservation. We ordered garlic beef tenderloin cubes, deep fried pork chop and stir fried squid with XO sauce. Out of the 3 dishes, our favorite one was the beef cubes. It was very tender, you could taste the port wine they used to cook it and had "wok hey". The fried pork chop was decent. We like how the batter was minimal and therefore it didn't  re-absorb the oil. The XO sauce stir fried squid was way too oily. The snow peas and celery under the squid was drenched in oil. Nonetheless, the texture of the squid was nice. It didn't feel like it was the pre-processed frozen squid. We also tried their steam milk pudding. It was very well done, super smooth, similar to the ones I had in Hong Kong. I wish they gave us a hot or cold option though. Overall, Chi Star is a solid restaurant, but I am not sure if 1.5 hour of just waiting there is worth it (we left to do some grocery shopping during the wait, so the wait didn't seem that long). I have been visiting this chinese restaurant for a few years already. They dishes are authentic and taste good. I had some family members who came over to visit all the way from New York so I took them over for dinner and this is how disappointed was our experience. 1. We were celebrating a birthday of a family member so we had a cake brought to the restaurant. We were told we had to pay 15% tips instead of 12% tips for just providing some extra plates and cutlery. 2. We were supposed to get free chinese dessert after dinner but they were too busy and they forgot about us which was not a big deal. When we asked the witness, she was so rude she yelled and said "Oh you want more? Ok fine I will you 4 more". I really didn't like her attitude it sounds like we are begging when we are trying to be polite. There are endless restaurant options out there. Wow, this place is really busy! Our friend took us here for dinner and I couldn't believe how busy it was on a Sunday night at 6pm. We had made reservations, but we still waited for half an hour which didn't give me a good first impression. Our friend had pre-order all the dishes which were fancier dishes and a bit pricey. The most interesting dish was the scallops stuffed pumpkin which was very creative and tasty but likely not a dish that I would order again. The food was good, but I'm not sure the higher prices for the specialty dishes was worth it. The dish that I enjoyed the most was the bean curd pig stomach stuffed with chicken soup. This dish was for $68 which is a little expensive but it's actually two dishes, soup and the chicken is removed from the pig stomach. We love their lunch menu items and how they give you soup with what you order. We sometimes order seafood like lobster or crab. You can call ahead and request a larger sized crab or lobster and the method of cooking. During certain holidays they have special meal deals which can be great for large family gatherings if you call and order ahead. They prefer cash but can take card. Got takeout from this restaurant for a family dinner. Food was ready on time and hot. Packaged well for family style meals. Sticky rice stuff in chicken. This was delicious - the sticky rice was done well, not mushy. The chicken was also cooked perfectly and not dry. The skin on the outside had a good crispness contrasting the soft sticky rice. Flavor on both chicken and rice were excellent. Salted egg shrimp and squash. Very rich but not too salty. Shrimp was a nice large size and the squash was deliciously smooth and soft on the inside. FYI - it's shell on shrimp. Oyster pancakes - to be honest, this one was a miss. I feel like it barely had any oysters. Kind of just tasted like a normal omelette without oyster. I've been here many times and the food and service is consistently good. I haven't encountered any issues yet. It seems as lots of reviewers have trouble with being seated. I've never encountered having to wait to be seated. It could be that I go when it's not super busy. A bit of a side note: the steel looking mugs that the hot drinks come in keep your drink hot and they hold a lot. It doesn't look that big but it's like my drink never ended. read more

Bad: Parking is limited, seating options are limited, tables are always full (although, you can then bet there is good turnover with the raw ingredients), weekend dinner options are either 5:45pm or 7:15pm (don't even try coming without a reservation), noisy (because of the small space and cramped seating), and prices are about 25% higher than other Chinese restaurants. Specifically about that price point, I'd rather eat in a more spacious and higher end chinese restaurant than eat here and finish my meal within the 1.5 hour dining deadline. read more

We ordered four (five, but one never came) separate dishes and none of them were a hit. Portion size is quite small for the price. One reccomended dish was the salted egg yolk pumpkin, which turned out to be undercooked with limited salted egg yolk flavouring. Overall, not a vibe and most certainly not worth fighting for your life trying to get a parking spot (it's a disaster - be warned). This place does not serve pecking duck unless you order in advance. So they can do a fried chicken as an alternative. The ribs were okay. The sweet and sour soup generic, the king mushroom okay. The fried rice okay. They provided a taro tapioca soup complimentary. They were very fat to bring cutlery for the caucasian individuals at the table. Also, this place serves tea bag in a pot. Different, I can see less clean up but also, on arrival tea arrived to the table not fresh, but overstretched and water down. The one thing I didnt like is their machine, it forces you to select from the three options 10%, 15% and 20%. There was no option to enter the absolute tip amount. Not the first visit. Location is near Time square north of time square. The four of us went for afternoon tea today. Service is great as always. We ordered 3 afternoon tea set and their signature dish shredded chicken. Two of the tea set can get the red bean drink without paying extra. The other one is regular drinks. Total cost $50 excluding tips. We ordered 西多士, which is my favourite for this store. 干炒牛河but they are out of rice noodles 河，so we got spaghetti instead. They cook it like 黑椒牛肉意粉instead, but it taste pretty good so we don't even bother to tell them. Also got 咸魚雞粒炒飯。All the food taste good. The chicken was a bit on the salty side but will be great with white rice. I was too cheap to ask for their upgraded red bean jelly drink. If you are ordering separately you should get it. Highly recommend it. Free wifi available. Can book table ahead of time. Their seafood dish is fresh too, especially if you tell them ahead of time when booking. Their Chinese soup is good too. We couldn't finish the food, so we've got the fried rice home for later dinner. I will return. read more

We've come here for dinner a few years ago and decided to try lunch. My mom heard/read about the XO beef fried rice noodle (XO 乾炒牛河being good so we got that. The noodles were good in that they weren't oily or too moist but the beef was spottily marinated and she got one that was overly salty. We also tried the baked pork chop tomato sauce rice (茄汁焗豬扒飯) and the sauce was too think and by the time it got to our table it had coagulated with a film on top. Not very appetizing based on looks alone and the flavour was better at 澳門街. My spam and egg sandwich was ok but the bread was very dry. Golden Phoenix has much better bread. Milk tea wasn't strong enough (watered down) and the iced lemon tea was average. Pretty average HK style cafe. read more

Not too bad, decent flavours, so just enough to come again if in the area. I noticed the portions were generous all around so that's good. A nice place for families. Busier as we left around 2 PM. We came for lunch and on a whim, ordered the Ginger and Green Onion Lobster off-menu for 2 lbs (I don't really recommend bcz the price ends up similar but less to Set A, which has more value, but still moderate in terms of lobster). Nice service. Usual process, we got to see the size before it's cooked (no scale). Huge plate, flavour-wise not too bad, my lovely company says it was a little salty but the lightly seasoned (or less MSG) soup that comes with the menu, helps that out a bit. Missing antennae, nbd. 7/10 Heard a lot about this place that it was legit good hk food. I found it descently good The flavors were there. Took the sweet and sour pork chops,they were extremely tender and great sauce that came with it. The oyster omelette didn't too special and there was very little oyster in it. (20 bux a bit overpriced) Ju gen yok was very soft and tasted great with the little greens. The daily soup was fantastic,lots of ingredients was used to make a soup of that caliber. Chi Star House just open 2 days ago.. I expect confusion during the first week or so when a business opens up. So this review is based on their soft opening and trying to figure things out. The open concept deco is really simple. The space feels really spacious and inviting. Tons of booth seating which is great for small group. Chi Star House is kind of a mixture of Cantonese and Hong Kong Style Cafe. With breakfast (8-11), lunch (11-3), afternoon tea (2:30-5:30) and dinner (5- 11 pm). All time slot has set special available the includes a drink or a soup. Arriving at 6 pm looking for something light and the waitress gave me a regular menu that only have dishes that are good for groups... I feel really not single friendly. I should have left but ended up suck it up and ordered Satay Beef with Vermicelli in Hot Pot ($7.99). The portion was really good at that price point but just lack satay taste and the sizzling hot pot factor. While talking to another waitress complaining about the lack of other options during dinner. She said they have noodles, fried rice and even all day special from $4.99!!!! Ended up I was not given the special menu and they didn't realize that the all day menu is grouped under breakfast..... I guess I need to come back and try out their $4.99 special... but for now 2.5 star rounded up to 3 with room for improvement!! read more

I said I would be back to try their other dishes last week. I could not wait, so back I went. Orderred Chinese style diced tenderloin and sauteed pork jowl with mushrooms. The beef was tender, juicy, medium rare, well balanced flavors. The pork was a little chewy but very delicious. These were all about "wok hei", you know, tossing the food in the air in flames. It's a HK style cafe restaurant during the day, and more of a traditional Chinese restaurant at night. I came here for dinner with two others, and we only ordered three dishes as we weren't that hungry: BBQ duck with plum sauce, general tso's fish, and shredded chicken. Nothing was terrible, but nothing really stood out. The prices were also quite low (but not crazily low like Ocean/Hai Tang). Service was very good for a typical Chinese establishment; I didn't need to wave anyone down for any sort of requests the entire time I was there. This restaurant is notoriously packed with long waits, but the food is good and reasonably priced. I have tried their dinner menu sets and also the afternoon tea menu which has a few of their popular items. It also comes with a free red bean ice cream drink. We went to Chi Star House for the first time in the past week, as we were looking to grab something around 5:30 ish. Normally during the peak hours, the parking lot gets busy so we normally avoid this mall as it can get hectic.  We've just missed the afternoon tea, so we looked into the dinner or regular menu. The staff was nice and patient. Our table was shaky, the staff saw it and offered to put cardboard under one of the legs in order to stabilize the table.  The food was average, I liked how they separated the noodles and the sauce, as the kids like the crispiness so they had lots to eat. If we ever eat at the off-peak hours, I'll be happy to come back to try other dishes, maybe their lunch and dinner specials. read more

This place is packed. Came here for dinner and they are really disorganised. They crossed off our spot on the list and if my party hadn't seen it happen, they would have thought we'd left. Constant streams of people arguing with the servers about not being seated so they get even more confused because it's a new person yelling at them. No real organised queue list here. We ordered our dishes. One of which was a steamed whole fish. It makes sense if they run out as it is a busy holiday and lots of people are ordering. But she forgot to put in our order, so it was about another 30 minutes before the first dish arrived. Most of the menu items on the wall are in Chinese. Many dishes have to be reserved in advance. Would be nice if there's a list of those speciality dishes so we can remember to call ahead. Seafood tank is maintained well so have good confidence in their seafood dishes. Ordered: Onion and ginger chicken - basically their steamed chicken with soy sauce like steamed fish. Very meaty, good quality and delicious. Stir fried beef cubes with 2 kinds of mushrooms - most flavourful dish of the night. Comes with mushroom and king oyster mushrooms. Goes well with rice Bok choy with double preserved egg sauce - too big for a small family. Not as flavourful or as tender as I imagined. Could be improved Tiger prawns and pumpkin in egg yolk paste - very generous portion for price. Prawns are fried crispy and just the right amount of salted egg yolk paste for flavour. Pumpkin is a bit greasy but is soft. 10 big prawns in total for $25! Other than the fact that it's super busy and the servers keep coming by to shoo you away, the restaurant serves decent food for the price as long as you're able to get a seat! read more

- Dinner Review Only: 3.5/5 stars - I can't speak for lunch service and menu items since I have only been to Chi Star House for dinner a few times. Overall the Chinese entrees/dishes will satisfy your cravings. Big fan of their sweet and sauce pork, enough said! I love their 5 spice duck since the duck is very flavourful and tender. Typically you have to preorder the duck, and they will make 1-2 more ducks in addition to reservations. So if you're lucky, you might get to try this duck dish without preordering! I also love how they can cook 1 eel and serve it in 2 different methods. The first is steamed with black bean sauce. Again, very flavourful and the eel is cooked perfectly! The second method is fried with salt and pepper. The eel is deboned and there is a perfect crunch! It lost 0.5 stars because... it's hard to get service sometimes especially on a full night. You might end up waiting a long time until they refill your teapot. This place can get pretty packed for dinner, especially on the weekends, so expect the wait! read more

I've been to Chi Star House several times and the most frustrating thing is the wait and seating arrangements. It's not unusual for Chinese restaurants to give preferential seating to frequent customers, but this place takes it to a whole new level. Every time I come, I could feel my blood pressure going up. I want to write about 2 specific experiences. The first time, I arrived around 7 pm for a party of 3 and we're told that the wait was about 30 min. In the end we waited for more than 1 hr +, not because turnover was slow, but because they kept combining small tables every time they became available to accommodate bigger groups. This is because they generate more revenue per person from bigger groups. After they did that for about the 5th time, I was quite livid and yelled at the general manager, after which we were seated fairly quickly. The second time, we arrived around 7:30 pm with a party of 3. Not sure if the general manager recognized me from our last encounter, but he repeatedly reassured us that our wait should only be 10-20 min. Of course, that was not the case. At one point, his in-laws scooped in and took a table by jumping the line, and he had to profusely apologize for the extra wait. Everyone waiting is so riled up because they do such a poor job managing expectations of wait times. I give this place a 2 star because the food is pretty good at a reasonable price. However, I would highly recommend coming really early (before 6 pm) or late (after 9 pm) to avoid this waiting/seating fiasco. Also, if they give you a wait time estimate, be mindful that it will likely take twice or three times as long. read more
