We used Yao Movers to relocate from Charlotte, NC to McLean, VA. Their price was significantly lower than the competition and they were recommended by a friend. We were moving from a single family home to another single family home. On the day in which they were scheduled to arrive, the team was two hours late. There were five people, three of them were subcontracted through a company which was local to Charlotte. Unfortunately I had to provide them with permanent markers and instruct them to label boxes according to rooms, which I would think is an industry standard. One of the movers had to leave early in the day, and another left to take him home. I began assisting with the job just so it could be finished. They could not fit everything in the moving truck and had to leave items in Charlotte to be picked up later. There were also items which they could not move, like a scuba tank, which I was not aware of. The moving team in Charlotte caused damage to the home, leaving a gouge in the freshly painted wall and scratching the floor near the front door. The unloading team arrived an hour late in McLean, and I found that many items were not packed properly. Kitchen drawers were simply dumped into boxes and a china hutch was wrapped in plastic but the contents were not emptied and packed. China, porcelain and silver were left loose in the hutch during the moving process. They made a second trip to Charlotte to pick up the remainder of the property using a small U-Haul and one mover. Unfortunately the driver (who was excellent on the first trip) was ill and slept in our home during the day while my wife packed the moving truck by herself. She made the fourteen hour round trip journey on her own because, at this point, she didn't trust the company. After all of that, our invoice was 82% higher than the initial quote, plus we had to pay for repairs to our former home in Charlotte and make an unscheduled 14 hour trip to make sure that everything was moved. I have no doubt that these guys would be sufficient for a local move but they are not equipped for long distance jobs. read more

Stay away. We moved from a 2 bedroom apt to a townhouse a mile away. We had all of our boxes packed up before they arrived...late. We had been promised 3 guys but only got 2, plus a small truck that didn't quite fit all of our things. I guess this is not exactly anyone's fault but one of the two guys who came had diarrhea and spent half the morning in our bathroom. We called Kevin to request more guys because the process was taking forever, and 2 more guys plus another truck arrived mid-afternoon. Like another reviewer noted, these are not professional movers, in any sense of the word. The guys in the morning were far better, although they came unequipped with packing tape and had to use ours (probably mgmt's fault). We ended up with banged up furniture and scratches on the walls of our new house that we'd just bought, and it took 9 hours to move our stuff one mile from a 900 sq ft apartment. Kevin charged us for 3 guys for 8 hours, which is definitely not what we actually got. We had made a similar move when we lived in Boston but with amazing movers, who got the job done perfectly and efficiently with 3 very professional guys in 4 hours. Lesson learned: Hire quality movers, even if they give you a higher quote. read more

Used Yao movers for an apartment to apartment move, one bedroom and recommend them highly Moved from apartment 1 on the 31st into apartment 2 on the 1st. They kept my stuff on the truck over night without extra charge. The teams of three movers were efficient and polite. They disassembled an L-shaped desk and reassembled it and moved a very heavy massage chair. The furniture was place where i asked in the new apartment. Nothing was broken -- a couple of those tiny metal dowels that support bookcase shelves went missing, but that's totally minor. The only issue i had at all was that i expected them in the afternoon and they did not arrive until 730 -- Wesley did keep me informed about the timing, but I would have preferred earlier so i could have some dinner before 9:30 read more

Deeply disappointing service. Took 3 hours to complete job, even though it should have less than 2 hours. Unprofessional and inefficient.

Movers showed up 2 hours late. Called the main # and was first told there is a +/- 1 hour window from scheduled time of 9:30am (which was not mentioned during initially scheduling). He said he would check with the movers and call me back. Never did. So I called again, was told movers were waiting for AAA b/c they broke down in Gaithersburg. He said movers would call me. Finally movers called at 11am and told me they were coming from Shady Grove Rockville. 2 kids showed up 10 minutes later, were extremely slow with the move, carrying literally 1 small box at a time. They also told me that the guy I was on the phone with (i assume the boss) was in Colorado and got the scheduled time mixed up due to time zone differences. They verified they did not have any truck issues either. They ripped up my mattress and damaged my TV stand during the move. At the end, the "boss" tried to rip me off my upping the fuel surcharge from $50 to $75. Just shady business all around. DO NOT USE. read more

Wes was a great dude. His crew were great, friendly and professional. My 3 star rating, is for the follow up after the move. They broke the legs off of my armoire, damaged the top of my metal side table and tore the fabric in my couch. I had told them prior to moving the armoire to make sure you don't put pressure on the legs and then to make sure to put a blanket down for the metal top of my night stand. For whatever reason they forgot. I booked Wes and his company b/c of the fantastic ratings. It bums me out to have to only give 3 stars. I didn't care about the legs on my armoire or the top on my night stand and i told them that. what did/does bother me is my couch getting torn. My move was back in late September. I've made no less that 3 attempts to get them over to have my couch fixed. He came over one time and said he would make some calls. That was the last I've heard even after reaching out 2 more times. At this point, I realize if i want it fixed, its on my dime. read more

In response to Kevin's big lie, YOU never contacted me. I had to keep contacting you because no one was getting back to me. I also contacted another mover to move me because I felt like I was being stood up! Even willing to pay them more. You kept me informed when I called you, not the other way around. Your men waited for 20-25 minutes for me at my storage while I was stuck on Metro and I never stopped to see anyone, so stop getting on here lying. I'm paying your people by the hour, no way will I stop to visit a friend. You sound ridiculous! Also, I gave them my code to get in the gate at my storage so they can use the time wisely and begin to unload the truck so that by the time I get there, they can put items in my storage and be done. Even with the 20-25 wait time, they still had a few things to load off of the truck to put in my unit. Which proves my point of them taking advantage of loading my items at my apartment, which should have never taken them 1.5 hours but only took them 30 minutes to unload and get up and down the elevator at my storage. I never hung up on you, the phone kept going out and I called you back. But for you to think that taking $100 off of a bill when you all were 2.5 hours LATE and not two hours late was enough, you got the wrong fool! You better be glad that I gave them anything! Then after you got "hood" with me on the phone, instead of giving you the phone lashing over the phone, I would've definitely did damage if you were in my face. You were very rude, unprofessional, insulting and not helpful. Remember this, Kevin, I am and was always the customer and you didn't do anything to resolve the issue fairly. But before you get your family and friends to get on here and lie for you, you better know that some people do know a lot of people, like me, and I have definitely spread the word. Your company SUCKS and you better protect and learn from ALL of the mistakes that you committed with my move and not only from a customer who wouldn't let you take advantage. Our experience was very different from the other reviewers. They tried to move us from DC to Northern Virginia in December 2015. They showed up almost 3 hours late. It took them FOREVER to pack up our 1 bedroom apartment. One of the movers STUNK of weed (do what you want on your own time, just not when you are moving my stuff). They put the boxes in our new house all over the place. We eventually asked them to just get everything inside because it just wasn't going well. The guy that stunk of weed kept banging into things. Lots of our furniture was damaged. Originally, I was not going to write a review because the owner told us to take pictures of the damage and that he would send someone to repair it. Even though he never followed up with someone to fix the damage, he also never asked to be paid, so I called it a wash and wasn't planning to write anything. That is, until this morning when part of our bed-frame collapsed at 5:30 AM. When I moved the box springs and looked at the frame, it was obvious they had no clue how to put a bed-frame together. Luckily nobody was hurt. There are other reviewers that seem to have had a very similar experience to mine, which makes me doubt the accuracy for the 5-star reviews. read more

This is actually my second time using Yao Mover's - and for good reason. Used their services 2 years ago when moving out of Downtown Baltimore to Towson. I used again moving from Towson to Columbia because I remembered how awesome their service was. They were very accommodating and flexible even though the request for their service was last minute (week of move). They arrived promptly and made sure to obtain any and all appropriate information: any particulars, requests, arrangements, and so on. James and Greg were extremely professional, efficient, friendly, and flexible. My roommate and I were still scrambling around trying to pack up things last minute and they both of them were patient and even helped out with whatever they could. I couldn't believe they were able to fit an atrocious amount of items into the truck and then unload all of it up 3 flights of stairs (with ease!). They were extremely careful with fragile items and were successful in moving all of our belongings without any damages. Yao Mover's are an incredibly polite, professional, friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and more than competent team. I have moved quite frequently in the past several years and have been more than happy and grateful to have had Yao Mover's service my needs when they first started! Why didn't they start sooner? I highly recommend them and will definitely be using them for future moves! read more
