I was driving through El Cerrito and had a craving for something Japanese that wouldn't break the bank, so I decided to check out Yaoyasan. I'm glad I did! The market has a good-sized parking lot, which made it super easy to stop by. Inside, the space feels clean, organized, and surprisingly open for a small Japanese grocery store. They have a solid selection of staples like everything from pantry items and frozen goods to drinks and snacks. I even noticed they carry baked goods, fresh bento boxes, and sushi in the refrigerated section, which was a nice surprise. It feels like one of those neighborhood spots where you could grab a quick lunch or just wander the aisles and find something interesting to take home. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and I thought the grocery prices were quite reasonable, especially compared to some of the bigger-name Japanese markets like Nijiya. I ended up picking up a few snacks and a sushi box just to try it out. Unfortunately, the sushi wasn't really for me. I came on a weekday, so maybe it was just bad timing, but the fish didn't taste very fresh and the rice was hard and underseasoned. I even let it sit for a bit hoping the texture would soften and the flavors would come through better at room temperature, but no luck. That said, I'd still come back here, but just not for the sushi. I'm curious to try their baked goods next time and will definitely swing by for snacks, drinks, or a quick bento. It's a cozy little market with good vibes, and I'm glad I found it.

This cute little Japanese store has a lot of snacks and Japanese household items for sale. I came here around noon on a Sunday and lots of the prepared foods were gone. I grabbed a few snacks and some Japanese rice. Service was friendly and respectful. The ladies spoke Japanese.

It's on Solano Avenue so it's in an area with a lot of other food spots. They have great friendly service that made us feel welcomed when we entered the store. We got their Spicy Pork Belly Rice Bowl, Beef Tofu Soup, Rose Tteokbokki, and Spicy Cold Noodles. I personally liked the rice bowl and the tofu soup the best! They both had a nice comforting vibe to each dish that I really liked. Their cold noodles and rose tteokbokki were not bad either, but I personally didn't find them to be too memorable. They have a cute patio in the back that we didn't get to sit at, but I heard is very cute. I'd love to come back to try their lunch sets as well! Overall, solid Korean restaurant - definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a Korean spot in Berkeley!

The interior is calm with great use of wood colours, the outdoor patio is brilliantly shaded by trees, providing a little secret treehouse vibe like in Pokemon ruby. Outside was pretty popping though so I sat inside and ordered the bulgogi comfort stew. This thing was stuffed to the brim. From the description it's easy to feel like it's going to be a pretty boring dish, but it was far from. The broth was definitely comforting, I didn't care about anything after the first taste. There were different varieties of mushrooms inside providing adequate texture variation and the beef portion was generous! Usually I find myself hoarding meat in these stews to make sure I get good bites but the dish deceptively had a great amount such that I could eat a solo meat bite and still have enough! The banchan was also very flavourful. I ended up stuffed in this little hideaway, surrounded by the supermarket portion of this establishment and the calming hiphop lofi, if I was heading straight back home I would have grabbed a few things. It was hard to fault this place. Throw back to my stomach rumbling, before I left I used the restroom in the front and unfortunately the cosy hideaway, clean aesthetic seems to end at the little corridor. The bathroom was not dirty but it was not as clean as expected. Service was great and the food tasted amazing, I'd definitely come back to try other dishes

Starting with an arresting blow-up of Italian movie star Monica Vitti behind the checkout, it's a visually pleasing emporium because it's not overcrowded with idiosyncratic products. The wine collection is particularly interesting with labels unknown to me. I've been tempted by the delectables in the Grab & Go section, but I've demurred for the sake of discretion. In fact, having almost no knowledge of any of these products, I only recently bought something here because I want to support them. I got a box of Rooibos tea and a jar of Hawaiian masala (Photo 10). I look forward to buying more in the future, though one thought I had was that this store would benefit from samples. On a previous visit, there was a bakery pop-up in front (Photo 8), and I think more of that activity could encourage more in-store traffic. It'll be interesting to see how this business evolves.
