I stopped by here after checking out the next door neighbor (book bar!), and this is an adorable shop! They have a really great selection of fancy yarn (I found this yarn that was part silk and wool, it was a Japanese brand!), and I really enjoyed browsing around. They also have a good wall of different knitting needles and crochet hooks, along with other useful notions, like yarn needle extenders (something that I've been looking at online, so I'm happy to see it here in person!). Yarn Refuge is like a festival for your eyes. Walk in and you're greeted by beautiful yarns, roving, and finished garments. It's a warm, friendly place and every time I been in the shop there are people working on projects, or just hanging out. I came in for some roving for a felting project. They are a nice assortment of colors, and I always find what I need for my project. Their prices are reasonable, you the staff is great. It makes me wish I could knit or crochet, but I think I'll stick with felting. read more

First of all, I loved this little cute shop. But not sure what happened with my order on specific colors and delayed so much to get it right. Two months of waiting. I tried to support the local shop. I finally gave up and went to Michael's because it was a request from my friends to have hats made. I felt embarrassed making my friend wait so long. Disliked my project when store saw what I was going to make? Or just a mishap in the order? I live 45 minutes away and I came into shop three times to try to pick up my order. I took a drive yesterday up to Yarn Refuge from Nevada City,Ca luckily for me it was a Thursday and they were open until 7PM with knitting night. I got to meet nothing but nice people willing to help and encourage. The owner of shop was amazing and so patient with being so busy and making sure everybody had what they needed and felt at home. Super nice store! Everything was very organized and lots of things to choose from. They were very busy this day so I had to really make an effort to get the help I needed. Since I am a newer knitter I am a bit lost when I come into a place like this. I'm usually with my friends who can help steer me through. Diane ( a sister Chicagoan) was kind and helpful. She let me wander but also directed me to the non-wool yarns I need. The space is gorgeous and the products are sooo far beyond anything you'll find in a big box craft store. I recommend buying your stitchy friends gift cards or, if you want to splurge, one of their amazing carpet bags to carry your crafts. Pam is the most involved shop owner I've met. Her love for the art of yarn is so apparent. Sometimes coming in as a newbie can be intimidating, but Pam is the correct balance of letting you poke around undisturbed and yet warm and inviting to questions. I wish I knew more about knitting to offer an opinion about what the store offers, but it has so many pretty things to catch your eye. Without Pam's gentle guidance and interest in my finding what I needed, I doubt I would have finally started learning to knit. I think it should be the first stop for anyone, beginner or advanced, in your pursuit of this hobby. read more

My wife received a gift certificate for Yarn Refuge and was excited about going in only to be interrogated and given a hard time about the legitimacy of the gift certificate by the woman at the counter. The yarn she got was great quality but because of the customer service experience, we would not recommend Yarn Refuge. Jimmy Beans Wool in Reno has much better customer service. She kindly taught me to knit many years ago and launched a lifelong obsession! I was so happy this store was open on the Fourth of July. I was just passing through Reno today and "needed" some new knitting supplies. When I walked in, I was greeted by the owner, Pam, and her lovely group of knitters. Pam was incredibly helpful in finding all of the supplies I needed for my next two projects. This store has a great supply of yarns and many beautiful hand dyed and local knits. I talked to Pam and the other knitters for a little bit while my yarn was being balled up. The premise of this store is beautiful; Pam opened this store to create a safe space for women (does not exclude men though) to knit and create a strong and positive community and environment, which is especially important in a world that is becoming less and less involved in community. All of the women in the store were friendly, uplifting, and have beautiful hearts and souls. I can't wait to come back here again! read more

Absolutely wonderful yarn store! Whenever I'm visiting a new place I try to make it to the local yarn shop, and this one was among the best. It is in a cute, funky part of town and the interior manages to be both chic and welcoming. Both ladies in the store were so friendly and helpful. They have some great brands, including some of my favorites- Brooklyn Tweed, The Fibre Co, Malabrigo, Lykke needles, and lots more. I bought a few beautiful skeins from a local dyer. They will also be adding some more exciting yarn brands soon. The customer service is amazing- there was some backup at the swift to get skeins wound, and I had to leave, so one of the ladies actually brought the skeins to the front desk of my hotel that evening! I can't think of another store that would do something like that. I wish this was my local yarn store! read more

I encountered the Yarn Refuge while visiting a friend in Reno - I found the shop to be welcoming and the staff both encouraging and helpful. Pam is amazing. They shipped my purchases back to Alaska with no complaints. I stumbled upon a problem - I'd misplaced a pattern for a shawl I was knitting. Couldn't remember the name or the designer. Pam - with my scattered memory and a picture of the starting section of the pattern figured it out and resent me the pattern. This is going above and beyond.
