It was so delicious! We got the red curry and the cashew stir fry. We just happened to stay in a airbnb right in front of the restaurant and my husband loves Thai food, so we thought we would go because it was so convenient and we are not disappointed. We came for a very late lunch (around 3:30pm) we were the only people in the restaurant but we liked the atmosphere and the music. They were playing some jazz. The service was fast and the food was on point. We loved the red curry the most but the combination with the stir fry was perfect as they were very different flavors. The food at Yasotorn is very good. However, one better check one's bill carefully. First, the restaurant does not have a liquor license, yet if one brings one's own wine, one will be charged a "corkage fee," which is unjustified and not in line with standard practice. When I complained, they took the corkage fee off the listing of items charged but NOT off the TOTAL BILL. In addition, the printed charges on the bill added up to significantly less than the total I was charged. It was so pervasive that it had to be a deliberate overcharge. So, my summary is very good food, but dishonest charging. Be careful of the bill. read more

The food is good. Well seasoned and a little different than the standard Thai fare. Just be careful when you order on The website. It told us to pick up at 6:30 about 20 min from the time of the order was placed. when we arrrived to pick up our order it was obvious it was not even started and was not ready until after 7. I'm absolutely impressed with this restaurant! Some of the BEST curry I've had that I've ordered it almost three days in a row. It's so so so good. They were accommodating to my late order and very responsive to a last minute alteration (my fault not theirs) so in addition to the incredible food, service is amazing... I've been here several times in the recent past (as well as sporadically over the last couple of years) and the food here is consistently freshly made, delicious, flavorful and so satisfying!! Yasotorn is a hidden gem in Evanston! I got to try the Cry Tiger, Pad Thai, and Red Curry, all of which were very tasty. Pad Thai and Red Curry are staples for me whenever I get Thai take out, and Yasotorn's take on these dishes were among the better that I've had. Furthermore, the portions here are really generous- I split these three dishes with one other person, and I was happily eating our leftovers for the next 1-2 meals. For the price, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place. Everything was generally just okay. We started with the coconut shrimp which was really tasty and I do recommend this. I also got the green tea bubble tea latte- ($1 more for tapioca balls) which I was partly expecting to be warm given the term "latte" but was good nonetheless, maybe a little too sweet. The entrees are what was disappointing. I ordered the mussamam curry medium and it was extremely mild and on the bland side. I also got a piece of the onion peel that was inedible. The rice that came with it was well cooked. My lunch date got the bamboo shoots salad spicy with sticky rice ($3 more). You should ONLY get this dish if you absolutely love fish sauce. The smell was off putting with the combo of fish sauce and ground roasted rice. The flavors had a good complexity if you were able to get past the smell. The food is excellent, the service is slow, the wait time for the food to come out need major improvement and portions to price leave you hungry still. While dining there I saw 2 people picking up their to go order waiting 20 + minutes. I attribute that to the restaurant being new and the staff still working out the kinks. But from what I can see the one waitress does everything from greeting us to taking our order, and packing the to go order. Most of the food portions are extremely small compared to other Thai restaurant. They tend to put everything on a bed of lettuce to make it look bigger. Went there for the first time today with a group of friends. They aren't forthcoming with the lunch specials and it's not posted clearly on their website. When asked after we ordered they had to show us the menu through the Toast app, which is the only method of accessing the lunch special. No print out menus or online presence other than that. Service is incredibly slow and rude. Friend ended up with two pieces of hair in her food. They were hesitant to comp the order. This place is a newly found neighborhood treasure. Authentic Thai food, deliciously fresh, spiced to perfection, served with love. I've been here 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and I'm counting down the days when we can return. We're working our way through the menu. Highlights all, include the papaya salad, pad Thai, Chu Chee salmon in red curry, shrimp fried rice, summer rolls, baby egg rolls, mango and sticky rice. Generous portions too! I am so happy to have found this place! I have been searching for a good thai place for a while and Yasotorn has lived up to the hype and reviews. I got a pad thai and a pad woonsen and both tasted authentic, flavorful, and juicy. I ordered pick up and it was ready in 20 minutes and they even texted me to let me know. The service was great, the food was even better, and the prices were not crazy. They even have a lunch special, but I didn't know about it when I called. Yasotorn occupies the location of a previous Thai restaurant. You are greeted with dirt encrusted ceramic floors from the previous establishment. The outside patio upstairs is pleasant. The two page menu is very limited and not typical of most Thai restaurants. We began with a fried egg roll appetizer which was reminiscent of something you could purchase frozen at Costco. Normally we would have chosen spring rolls; but they did not have a vegetarian version. Next we had the Som Tum papaya salad. Their version was lacking in the spice and complex flavors typically found in this dish. Next we ordered the Thai staple, Pad Thai. Also lacking in flavor, it lacked the distinctive sweet and sour, and slightly smoky tamarind flavor typically found in superior versions of this this dish. They completely forgot our second entree, which we had to ask for two times. Unfortunately, the Chu Chee curry was not worth the wait. Also lacking in flavor; it contained nothing other than tofu and a few pieces of steamed broccoli in a bland coconut broth. Not even the side of Thai hot pepper sauce could save it. The Thai coffee and mango smoothie were fine. I felt sorry for our poor waiter who seemed completely overworked, overwhelmed, and befuddled running up and down the stairs to grab food from the kitchen. In an area with a huge selection of Thai establishments, Yasotorn is going to need to step up their game if they want to succeed. I took a full day to consider before writing this review. I have ordered Thai food from Yasotorn many times and always just pick up or delivery because of my first few encounters at their establishment. I always want to give people the benefit of the doubt so I ask was is very busy, was there a communication issue etc.? This visit and last visit was unacceptable. First let me say that I visited Yasotorn within a month of it opening (it replaced another Thai restaurant) a couple of years ago, with a friend and the service was less than what I basically expect and just short of rude. The second time I dined in, again with a friend, there was only one other customer in the restaurant and we received our food in a timely manner, it was delicious and the service was acceptable. I feel like every employee in the restaurant has something against smiling and being friendly but I figured maybe it was culture...who knows. Well, this last time, yesterday evening I wanted to celebrate a friend's birthday and I live just down the street and it has a rooftop so I thought I would try one more time...bad idea, we walked out. The server (not sure of their gender choice so I will use they) treated us as if we were an imposition. No smile or friendliness when we arrived. We asked for the rooftop and they just nodded yes, so we led ourselves. Once seated, not a word was spoken and they brought us water, I asked, "May I have a lime please." They nodded. A few min. passed and we received the menu...time passed and they brought silverware and one appetizer plate...time passed and they came back to take our order...each time I asked if I could please have a slice of lime for my water as it was a warm day and the ice had already melted. Finally, I thought I'd go down and see if they were busy. Nope. While downstairs I asked them again, "May I please have a slice of lime" and they abruptly replied, "I was getting that for you." Given the set up of the restaurant (3 small levels) the second level is where the waitstaff station is and I thought I would wait out of the way by the stairs and just carry the lime up myself. I might as well have been a fly on the wall and of no consequence. They walked past me and seated customers, they walked past me again and brought silverware to another table, walked past me again and refreshed the water at another table. At that point I just went back upstairs and my friend asked, "Where is the lime?" What a good question. Now the first time I patronized this spot with a friend, we were both black. The second time I was with a white friend but she did all of the ordering and the service was okay. Then other associates who are black also stated they would not return because they felt like they were imposing on the staff by being there. Then the third visit, my white friend (who has eaten there before with a totally different experience) watched and realized there really was a difference in how the waitstaff behaved that day. She asked to speak to the manager and was told there was no manager for her to speak to and basically blew her off. We left and I will not return. Furthermore, I will advise my black friends and associates not to patronize. Apparently, I and people like me are not welcome. Too bad, the food is delicious and the rooftop is adorable. Here is my assessment: 1) Vegan Tum Yum soup- Toooo sweet; 2) Pud Ke Maw- no Thai taste, not enough veggies; 3) Massaman curry- sweet, lacking in Thai spices also. Adding insult to injury, was charged $8 extra for making it vegan! That is probably worth repeating- $8 extra for vegan because I did not select actual animal meat. The explanation could not be provided except that that is how the owner charged it. WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN AND WILL ENSURE THAT PEOPLE THAT I KNOW WILL ALSO KNOW.
