The place is small but the service is great, very attentive. We love this place because it is Mexican and Japanese. So this place doesn't lack flavor. We got the jalapeño TNT ( not pictured) and it was the right level spice, delicious! The volcano was super creamy and delish and the Tulum was very fresh!

If you are looking for fresh, unique sushi rolls, this is the spot. A little small but mighty spot. I was craving some sushi and they definitely hit the spot!

Tried the Puerto Vallarta roll on their new Summer menu and it was delicious. The server was so sweet and energetic. Service was fast and the place is cute inside.

    Dragon Roll and Spring Roll

Serving "JapaMex" fusion, this cute standalone building is serving up some tasty creations. Stopped in for lunch and our server was attentive and very nice (wish I remembered his name)! We ordered the Dragon Roll and the Spring Roll - both were good. For what it's worth, a lot of the sushi rolls on the menu have cream cheese in them. They have a drive thru, but if you sit inside, first thing you'll see when you walk in is the chefs preparing food. Colorful art is everywhere. The restaurant's yellow color theme runs throughout the building and makes it a cheery place to grab some food.

I ordered through DoorDash and I've never been there so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. I ordered a rainbow roll and the infierno roll. Both were delicious but the infierno roll is absolutely amazing. The picante scallops give it a unique touch and I don't think I've ever had a roll like that before. Everything was fresh and delicious and I'm excited about trying more items!

Now upon arrival I was a bit taken back to see the drive though but that didn't discourage us from enjoying some very fresh sushi. It wasn't a large restaurant but they had plenty of seats. The service was sub-par but they were busy with plenty of customers and take out. The fish was fresh. Super tasty and didn't smell like fish at all. They have a huge menu so we explored. Had the frushi roll and the summer roll. The plantain on the summer roll was a pleasant surprise! But the frushi is my new favorite. Can't wait to come back!

One of the points of contention in communities is authenticity, a superfluous word if there ever was one, where people make efforts to rate a place based on preconceived notions and expectations. Yellowfish Sushi, with a location close to Wurzbach & I-10 and it's second location at Blanco @ Loop 410, has changed the concept of sushi in San Antonio from a traditionally gated and pricey dinner option to a casual affair meant for sharing and with little to no fuss. The first and smaller Wurzbach storefront, located near the Medical Center, started it all. Brenda & Alex Sarmiento, the talent behind the popular El Señor Es Mi Pastor Taco (which opened after Yellowfispot just down the street), wanted to find the same sushi environment to San Antonio from their hometown of CDMX, where sushi is a much more casual and less imposing scene. Where sushi has been seen in San Antonio as a "special" type of dinner usually reserved for date nights, graduations, or an exotic night out in the town, the Sarmiento siblings decided to bring the informal dining option, remove the prohibitive pricing, and create unique offerings fusing Mexican flavors and ingredients with Japanese led rolls. The rolls are authentic representations and an evolution of the rolls in the streets of CDMX, from the unique citrus based soy sauce freshly made every week to the Gansitos roll which combines a traditional with yes, a Gansitos roll, the ubiquitous pastelito treat you can find at any tiendita in Mexico and now in any Latino grocery store. I've had several rolls and offerings at both locations. Some of my faves: Tocino Roll - yes, the bacon tempura is dope but the thinly sliced lemon peel gives this roll an incredible kick that you'll remember. El Dorado Roll - the Tampico and Anguila sauce is a standout and the shrimp and cream cheese provide this roll with the base for that punch of a sauce. A great example of the fusion that is going on here at Yellowfish. Summer Roll - your classic prepared summer roll that is perfect for a lite bite of sushi offering; you can really taste the freshness and is a prefect take home meal to pair with a crisp cider. I really thought that through for some reason. Cevichimi - Sashimi style sushi in a more traditional ceviche style taste profile and serving, I really think this is a game changer even though once you try it it's pretty obvious how this concoction hasn't been made before. It's a wonderful combo of flavors that really pop. Salmon Japarrito - innovation doesn't mean everything always hits at 100. this "burrito" is a mouthful for sure and when you drench it in their homemade citrus based soy sauce it's a winner; I just wanted a bit more salmon but otherwise it's good. Yellowfish Roll - the namesake roll lives up to its bestowed honor with its flavored packed combo of picante shrimp, cilantro, habanero infused caviar, and their signature Salsa Roja, it's a great introduction to JapaMex cuisine here! Gansito Roll - the intro hits but the finale shuts it down... a Gansito is wrapped in rice and prepared with fresh strawberries and chocolate syrup. It's delicious and shows a more whimsical approach for desert. I'm not even a quarter of the way in trying the rolls but you can tell much of the menu has been carefully thought out and the pairings aren't gimmicks or creations for the sake of creation; instead, Yellowfish, in adopting two culturas to make a new one, and have created something amazing that frankly is a better experience than either cuisine on its own. Additionally, the reasonable pricing and causal environment is an exciting opportunity for San Antonio folks to approach sushi from a different perspective. I highly recommend you head out there and get some. Pro Tip: the Gansito Roll is (sometimes) not a menu item but can be made by request. I'm not sure how Brenda or Alex are gonna feel about me posting about it but hopefully they went to La Michocana and picked up a few boxes. Order it!

Sin Nombre Roll Pepino Roll chilerrito
    Alexis W.

In the Rim. Loved the taste of plantains from the sin nombre roll and the fresh cucumber taste from the pepino roll. Almost all have some cream cheese in them, but blends well. The "kani" is imitation crab. Only bottled water available; ie you can't just get a water cup. Masks required for all. No military discount. Would come back to try others.

    SPECIAL TRAY

My favorite sushi spot. Point blank period! They are always very fast and efficient. The restaurant itself is cute n tiny great for intimate dining. Ive been getting the special trays more often since it comes with 5 different rolls and two appetizers. So good!

    The Isak Roll
    Claudia M.

By the way, just stick to the Isak Roll. One of my favorites was also the Chio Roll. Idk what happened but the one I got today was not great, like, at all. The service was great though! The person assisting me is always nice. And once I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, the ambiance was great, like always. Also left smelling like sushi, like always, but it's part of the experience. One thing I forgot to mention is that they like to switch up the rolls included in your order, sometimes you'll get 10 slides of sushi, another times you'll get 6 slides. (Today I got 6, I hope you can appreciate that in the picture, I just ate 3 pieces, leaving the other 3 pieces out of the 6). Still love the restaurant and the employees. But I just probably will stick to the Isak roll from now on, it always states amazing, and I get the slides of sushi the price resembles.

    tuna poke bowl
    Sara M.

Sadly, I was very disappointed in the meal ordered from Yellowfish Sushi. I ordered the poke bowl with their rojo sauce and vinegar soy sauce. Both of them came in their containers, separately wrapped. The poke bowl was a half and half deal with zucchini noodles and sushi rice. I am fairly new to poke bowls, but they have become an obsession, so I eat them regularly. Therefore, I am thankful that this wasn't my first bowl because I don't think I would have ever had poke bowls again. The tuna smelled and had an extremely fishy taste. The sauces did not add to the flavor of the bowl at all. In fact, after a couple of bites, I could no longer continue and my almost $14 dollars ended up in the trash. It was very distasteful. Which is sad, because I have previously had sushi at this place and have enjoyed it very much. This meal was just unacceptable. Definitely not up to previous standards.

All that was left. I almost licked the plate.

We didn't realize this place was a cousin of Shiro and owned by the same guy until we saw some similarities in their style, layout and menu but nevertheless, the food was still absolutely amazing. Even though the ambiance had some similarities, I'm glad their food options were distinguished because otherwise could have just gone downtown. You cannot go wrong with any of their food options. Highly recommend doing family style so you can get a taste of everything and all the different flavors. We started with the gyoza and calamari which were to die for and were not greasy at all. Pork ssam, wagyu, miso pasta and octopus all brought a little bit of their own element and flare to your palate that it's hard to describe unless you try it. Wagyu was just melt in your mouth delicious. Pork ssam and octopus had their crunchy texture and umami flavors. The miso pasta added a light refreshing touch to balance everything out but don't let it fool ya, the noodles will expand in your stomach. We topped it off with their yuzu cake. Our only disappointment was they were out of their other desserts but nevertheless everyone of us left full and happy. Would come here again.

When I first read about Yozora, I honestly thought it sounded a bit pretentious. Fascinating, but…read morepretentious. Because the idea of music being an actual integral part of the dining experience--not just some kind of background noise--felt a little precious for my taste. I'm glad to admit I was wrong. So let's start with the ambiance and the vibe of Yozora. It's in a fairly non-descript kind of center; not bad but not specially memorable. But the space itself is open and has an air of restrained sophistication. And then there's that hi-fi set up. The music at Yozora really is part of the experience, but it's not intrusive in the way that you'd think. Most of what my dining companion and I heard was 50s and 60s jazz, and it was perfect for the occasion. Sushi and Coltrane are a great mix, and even though we were not far from the hi-fi system, I could hear every word of our conversation, without the need for either of us to raise a voice. Somehow, it's like the music operates on a different frequency from regular table chatter. Suffice to say, the music enhanced the mood and really set a scene for Yozora's chefs to tell some stories. And that, they do really well. We started out with seasonal tempura and miso masu ceviche--ocean trout marinated in miso, soy, and lime juice--that was sublime. But funnily enough, the real star small plate was a truffle creamy miso soup that was earthy and slightly sweet at the same time and was silky in texture. From there, we ordered a series of crudo and battera, each unique in its own way. It was wonderful stuff, accompanied by a rice lager. The kitchen at Yozora is not shy about experimenting with non-traditional flavors and ingredients. Sometimes it works really well; sometimes, not as well, but it's never bad, and the servers actually ask for feedback for the kitchen, which is something I rarely see. Yozora honestly seems to be most concerned with creating a great dining experience, and it does that, from the chefs to the line cooks to the servers (who are helpful and attentive without hovering). The music, the mood, and the menu add up to a memorable experience.

Could be a nice, intimate place for dinner though we were seated next to a pretty loud group. Service was fast and friendly, which was appreciated. The meal itself was decent, not great. Tried the masago and snow crab off the sushi menu; the former was good, but the latter strangely dry, as if it had sat out a little too long. An appetizer portion of the shrimp and vegetable tempura was very good. Particularly puzzling was the unagi roll. Not only did each piece of the roll fall apart, it was doused with so much eel sauce that it was hard to taste anything else. Looking back on it, I should have sent it back to the kitchen. Of note was the tempura banana dessert, which was a sort of Japanese take on a sundae! Putting crisp, hot chunks of fruit up against sweet vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup (not berries as the menu claimed) was...well, interesting. I probably wouldn't order it again, but it is novel. Average it out and it's a decent place, though I would only come again if I was in the area for something else to begin with. This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK having a nosh here with Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh.
