Ever since I have moved to the area I have been looking for good chinese food and I have finally found it! We came here for lunch and it was fairly busy. We were seated quickly. Their hot tea comes out in the nostalgic metal pots and tea cups, so I knew I was in for what I was looking for! We shared Pork Chow Fun, Pecan Shrimp, Kung Pow Chicken and Sweet and Sour pork. After moving from the Bay Area to Idaho 3 years ago - to the culinary wasteland for Chinese food we planned an escape to savor Yank Sing's wonderful Dim Sum as part of a one day SF trip. It did not disappoint. At the first bite of steamed pork bun we went into Dim Sum euphoria, ordered nearly every morsel that passed by on a cart. Everything was hot, delicious and we literally ate ourselves into a Dim Sum coma. We also ordered long life noodles which were redolent with a variety of mushrooms, careful to slurp them up whole for good luck. The only sterling disappointment was the Prawn with Walnuts dish. Bland, greasy, poor presentation. Other than that one dish we were delighted with our meal and vowed to make an in and out trip every 6 months to return to this and other favorite dining experiences we miss so much in SF. read more

Walked past this place many times and didn't even think of going in. I saw it on a best list and decided to try it out. Definitely have a hard time finding good Chinese food. Wow this place brew us away!! They have a bar plenty of seating and great staff. Now the food. Well let's say every bite was excellent! The duck was a treat. I know it's not for everyone but you have to try it. The ribs were mouthwatering with plenty of meat on them. Pork chow mien was excellent. The chicken fried rice is the best we've had. Orange chicken was good as well with plenty of sauce and flavor. Double fried noodles are something most places don't make or get very wrong. I can only give 4 stars because I got it to go. I feel as though to truly know if a place is 5 stars one would have to sit and enjoy the entire dining experience. Ordering was easy and didn't take long to retrieve food and pay once I arrived. My roommate and I got a little crazy as we wanted to try a bunch of items. Crab rangoons- I am super picky on these because I love them so much. These were ok and I'd get again if I went back. Potsticker- wholly moly were theirs HUGE and very flavorful. Would get again. Kung Pao Chicken- lots of flavor. Good amount of breading to sauce ratio. Broccoli was perfect Beef chow fun- I wish I had ordered without the green peppers. To me it overpowered the flavor. Orange Chicken- I actually liked that they put the orange sauce on the side so the chicken didn't get soggy. It wasn't my favorite orange sauce but I'm not a huge fan of orange chicken so please don't base trying on my opinion. Pork Fried rice was delicious! I love a good fried rice and this hit the spot! I stumbled across this delish establishment by recommendation, and it has been very good every time. I've enjoyed ramen, eggs rolls, egg drop soup, wonton soup, and Thai basil fried rice. Each time I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the food. Top this off with excellent service both at the table and ordering take away, drives this delightful establishment to receive five stars. I know things are rough right now in the service industry, but due to the combination of poor service and mediocre food, I will not be going back to Yen Ching any time soon. Arrived at noon on a Sunday, we were the second table seated, and we were a party of two. Service was excruciatingly slow, as there was only one server, with another person (maybe the manager?) seating people and answering the phone. Ordered the potstickers and fried shrimp as the appetizer, we received the shrimp first and then got the potstickers 15 min. later. I had to ask for a drink menu, and the cocktail didn't have much alcohol or taste. Waited at least 1/2 hour for our lunch, and then the server brought our bill to us, so clearly the main dishes were forgotten. She asked if the manager (I'm assuming he was the manager) brought our food to us, we said no, and then she just took off from our table. I flagged down the manager and asked if our food was coming, he said there was a mix-up in the kitchen and our food was being prepared. We waited another 10 minutes and finally got our sweet and sour chicken and mu shu pork. The mu shu pork was surprisingly cold and rather bland. In total, it took 1 hour and 40 minutes for our lunch. Honestly, if the food was hot and delicious, I wouldn't have minded the super long wait and confusion in the kitchen, but I've gotten better food elsewhere for half the price and a quarter of the wait time! read more

We love this place. The service is always great. The server even goes to the bar and gets honey for my wife's tea. I enjoy the crispy fried wanton and the Yen Ching fried rice is super. I really wanted to like Yen Ching a lot. From what I had read the food was great. I found my lunch to be very Americanized Chinese, not the Chinese experience I was looking for. Food was OK, but even the spicy Szechuan Pork I ordered was pretty bland. On the good side, there was plenty of pork in the dish. The Egg Drop Soup I haven't had in years and was also very bland I wish I'd been offered a choice of maybe Hot and sour Soup also, but I wasn't told about it and it did not say anything about choices on the menu. Also, I have to say---places that only have forks and not chopsticks are only telling customers they think no one in Boise knows how to use chopsticks. At least if they have them at the table in a container I wouldn't have to every time go through asking if I can have a pair. Would I go back? If I was downtown, maybe for lunch. Highly suggestible as I am for food, the chopsticks in a kitchen display at a cabinet shop I entered for morning appointment made me crave Chinese food for lunch. Being nearby Yen Ching, in went my hubby and I. The happy surprise was this food was easily light years better than any restaurant in our former hometown of Bend, Oregon. Comparing it by this measure and not to the remarkable Chinese dishes we enjoyed in our NYC and SF years, Yen Ching is a place we'd return to again as we continue our hunt for good Chinese food in the Treasure Valley. VIBE: Red formica tops at booths by the windows and tables throughout the large space. Seating has enough distance and aisle space between to be a comfortable distance from your neighbors. All seating is standard height. Thank goodness because my days wanting to eat perched on a high stool are way in the rear view mirror. There was no music on the sound system for the first fifteen minutes or so of being there. Hooray! That absence in a restaurant is so unusual, and also so pleasant, it took a bit to get used to. But eventually the sound system came on with a subdued "Yanni-like" set. Alas. Most of the folks in for lunch seemed to be downtown business workers and some seemed to come from the Capital. People kept stopping at the booth behind us to address one of the men seated there as "Mr. Chairman". He was not Mao. But based on the discussions he was in politics. SERVICE: We received a frieindly greeting on entry and given our choice of seating. We were greeted again on exit, asked how we enjoyed our lunch and invited back. The server was quick to bring menus, following with water and our tea order and then and followed up to take our meal order. He checked in again once the food was delivered to make sure all was well. Food arrived hot out of the kitchen, in the right order, and with enough time lapsed to have us know it was cooked fresh but not so much time as to wonder where the heck it was. FOOD: We were in at lunch time but ordered off the dinner menu as we're not fans of the lunch combination plates anywhere. But if you are, you will hit the jackpot here. The lunch specials drill includes about 12 menu items ranging from $7.50 to $9.00. With the lunch menu item of your choice you also get rice, egg roll, cup of soup (egg flower I think) and...ta dum...a trip the the salad bar. Seriously. There was a small salad bar set up with three items; iceberg lettuce salad, ramen noodle salad and chicken wings. A sign posted said "3 wings per customer please". I cannot imagine who would partake of this kind of salad bar, but as the lunch crowd flowed in there were lots of lunch special takers who made a trip to the salad bar to balance salad and wings on saucer sized plates. Different strokes. Our dinner menu order included hot and sour soup, mu shu plus a pot of tea. All were good. The texture of the soup was just right and there were peas in the soup, an addition which may not be authentic but of which I am a fan. The mu shu was tasty with all ingredients distinct from each other. Although messy given how thin was the pancake wrap to disintegrate half way through so best eaten with fork. Next time we will also order from the dinner menu and try specials like lamb with green onions (our server said it was very good) or laquered duck. If Dim Sum is what you're after, this may be the only place in the Treasure Valley to get it. Limited day(s) of week availability, I think, and not from cart selections but from kitchen. VALUE: We appreciated portion size was ample for two to share, but not the ginormous, heaping plates of food offered at some Chinese restaurants. Also a good value; a pot of tea, an order of mu shu to feed two and soup for two was only $18. THIS N THAT 1) PARKING: On street. Good luck with that downtown. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in the door and throughout. Ample aisles. Standard height table seating. Didn't check the loo. 3) NOT STRAIGHT THROUGH: Lunch starts at 11:00 and ends at 2:30. They open again for dinner at 4:30 or 5:00. This is not open straight through to dinner service. Now why they decided to drop the good General Tsao's last name, I do not know. I was pleasantly surprised with some (unadvertised) egg-drop soup before my meal arrived. The chicken was a couple of steps above Panda Express, sweet and spicy, but still well south of what you would get at a Seattle-area Chinese restaurant. There is a secret noodle menu that I have ordered off of with much enjoyment. Recently I had fish flavored pork which was terrible. I had the worst headache all day afterwards. I would rather go here than PFs just because it is local and you can get more for your $. Especially since they have installed a flashy new full bar. I don't remember them having liquor before. Very pleasantly pleased. Have not had a decent plate of noodles since moving to Idaho. We really enjoyed our Yen Ching pan fried noodle dish. We also took an order of beef chow fun home with us and it was good. We enjoyed our meal and are planning on going back. I am interested to try the black bean noodles. The steamed fish came highly recommended as did the mushroom rice in the dim sum menu. I think you should go, I think you'll be happy. Easy to distance, masked, protocols in order. Finally got to try Yen Ching after reading and hearing great reviews about the restaurant. They don't have delivery so the option is to either take it to go or dine in. It is located off of 9th Street so you will have to pay for parking in order to dine in. The restaurant is nice and spacious and clean with friendly and polite staff. Just as a little background I'm from Houston, eaten at many great chinese restaurants there and in California since I have family there. This restaurant did taste like home cooking and was very good. It's not quite as good as previous restaurants where I'm from, however, it is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Boise area. My husband and I ordered the hot and sour soup which was perfectly flavored but also has some non-traditional things inside it such as peas and carrots (carrots are debatable but was missing the mushrooms!). However I would order it again! We also ordered Ma po tofu which had excellent flavor and plenty of sauce. The beef chow fun was good but different since it was sweet versus savory. The rice noodles used weren't as thick as what I'm used to in beef chow fun. Last we had the sizzling beef with scallops and it also had green onion and snow peas. This was also very good and was a savory dish. The scallops and beef were fresh and melted in your mouth. I will definitely be returning to try their dim sum menu. I wish that they had a black bean chicken dish because that's what I was looking for!
