We order from them often even though the food is a little pricey for the quality. We do this because they are the only Chinese place that delivers. Probably won't order from them again after tonight. I ordered online and received a phone call from Yen Ching a few minutes after. They advised me the sweet tea I ordered was priced incorrectly on their online ordering system. The tea was 2.50, not the 2.25 listed on the website. They asked that I please give .50 to the driver since my card had already been run with the tip. I said okay, mostly because I was floored and couldn't think of a response quick enough. Had I been able to I would have told them to just cancel the whole order. It's not about the .50, but more about the fact that it was a mistake on their part and they actually called to ask I give the delivery driver .50. What would they have done if I didn't have cash? In addition to that I'll echo what a lot of the other reviews here say is that the food isn't actually worth the cost unless you absolutely have no other choice. read more

This was our first time here and it was so disappointing. Our waitress took at least 10 minutes to acknowledge us and it's wasn't exactly busy tonight. She didn't say "hello, how are you doing?" or anything like that. She said "you ready?" Wow. Our party consisted of two adults and two children- and there were no child-friendly options, only $10 chicken tenders and fries and $13 fried shrimp and fries, which of course were (expectedly) frozen. However, my husband and I ordered shrimp with mixed vegetables and general tso's chicken and it came about 5 minutes after we ordered. The kids food came out at least 15 minutes later and was completely over-fried. Our waitress then basically disappeared. I got up myself on more than one occasion to grab silverware, napkins, and boxes from the serving station. When I got the $65 bill, I almost fell over. Horrible quality and quantity for the money. Won't be back, and will definitely stick to Lucky Chinese across the street. read more

We have eaten at most Asian restaurants in the Midlothian and some of the Short Pump/Richmond area and this is by far the best. The service has always been great either in the restaurant as well as calling for a take out. We only have 2 Asian restaurants on our list of acceptable places and this is one of them. read more

I've been eating at Yen Ching for years and it is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant. The restaurant is spotless, the customer service is always stellar, and the food is delicious. If I have one complaint it's that it's a little pricey for dinner. If you stop in for lunch; however, it's an excellent value. You get portions as large as the dinner size for a lot less money. In my opinion, the stars of their menu is the Five Taste Chicken and the Crispy Honey Chicken. The Five Taste Chicken isn't available at any of the other Chinese restaurants I've visited in the area and it is delicious. read more

I have been eating at this establishment for close to 30 years and it was A 5 STAR RESTAURANT - NOT NOW. CHANGE IN MANAGEMENT!! We went there today and everything was different, no cloth napkins, no garnishments on plates, nothing special with fortune cookies, took over an hour to get food, egg roll was served COLD!! yes cold. They have reduced their staff, it was the lunchtime rush and we saw one waitress serving the whole place carrying trays of food for several tables at once - very impersonal. We came into an empty restaurant and left an empty one, for some reason everyone got their food first and we just sat there. 1.5 hours to be exact. When my spouse asked for a drink refill the waitress took his glass that was 1/3 full of melted ice and poured pepsi on top of melted ice yuk. We used to get fresh glasses. I spoke with the lady at the register when we were checking out and she went back to get the manager who never came out - didnt want or have time to speak with a regular patron about issues with the quality of her care and service. This is by far the worst dining experience I have had in the Richmond area to date. Not wanting to cook, I talked my husband into starting a tradition of Chinese food on Christmas night and we decided on Yen Ching because the reviews were good. Big mistake. We ordered vegetable dumplings for our 18 month old and they were "okay" but took about 30 minutes - which is too long in my opinion for an appetizer. For the main course, my husband ordered the Ginger Shrimp "extra spicy" and I ordered the Peking Duck (which is a chef recommended dish). The duck was beyond description, but I will try; rancid, tough, pork-like texture and so dry I think it cut my tongue. I took two bites and gagged. My husband, who will eat ANYTHING, took one bite and spit it out. My toddler, who eats DOG FOOD, gagged on his piece. My husband and I decided to just share his Ginger Shrimp which was pretty foul, too. He had ordered "extra spicy" but it came "extra gooey and corn starchy". I ended up filling up on the steamed white rice. Because I am 8 months pregnant, I am praying the duck does not give me food poisoning or worse. We told the waitress about the duck and she just shrugged her shoulders and took it away - still charging us for it. I am wondering how many diners will get served that same duck over the next week - I think they just put it back in the fridge and wait for it to be ordered again. I wish I could say something positive about the experience but even the fortune cookies were stale. read more

This place has been around for a very long time, and it USE to be the best chinese food in the area. We use to love everything they offerred, but unfortunately, in the past year they have really gone downhill. Everything we have gotten lately has been extremely greasy with little to no flavor. It's been very upsetting. The first time it happened, we thought maybe it was a fluke, but each time since then, it has been the same. Very disappointing experience. Ate her many years ago and it was wonderful. Today the food was bland, all swimming in sauce that was non-descript and boring. But the gigantic fail..... Was the "pancakes" for the Mu Shu Pork. They served us Mexican flour tortillas instead of the classic thin rice pancake. When asked about it the server just shrugged. Never going back. I had eaten at Yen Ching for lunch with a friend and had a very good experience with good, hot tasty food but when we were in Richmond again one evening I took my husband there and had a terrible experience. When we were seated though there were 4 top tables all around we were told that we were only two and HAD to sit at a small two top. So we sat at a small table hugging a wall and waited and waited for a menu and attention. We finally ordered and waited 50 minutes for our food. Most tables around us (even ones that came in after us) got their food and ate and some even left before us. My husband who NEVER complains called the waitress over and complained and we still got NO apology or even an explanation. Finally getting our food, which was ok but not as tasty as the lunch I had had, we ate and were brought the bill and fortune cookies. Now all the tables around us that finished were brought fortune cookies and plated orange segments but not us! No oranges! I guess that was suppose to be my husbands punishment for complaining. As much as I love Chinese food I know we will probably NEVER go back to Yen Ching because of the treatment we received, not the food. read more

This restaurant is as good as it gets for Chinese food in Richmond (Americanized)! I've been eating here for many years and I have always been happy. The service is AMAZING and the food is consistently good. I am partial to the Szechuan Chicken, which always has white meat chicken breast. I'm pretty critical of typical Chinese restaurants that use lots of fatty meats. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Literally just got home after eating at this place. First off, big fan of Yelp after watching Jon Taffer on reality series "Bar Rescue". So I use it before going into ANY place I've never been to. Brought the GF here for a on-the-way home from work dinner and I have to say it was fantastic! It is a bit dated inside but very clean and comfortable. Our waitress, a young blonde girl, extremely attentive, promptly brought us our drink orders. I ordered the shrimp lo mein and my GF general tsos chicken. Both came out within 10 minutes and blew us away. The lo mein was slightly browned and flavorful which is how it should be (a lot of places under cook the noodles or do not allow enough time for the juices and spices to soak into the noodles). General tsos chicken is pretty good as well. Slightly cunchy on the outside with great flavor, just the right amount of heat, and tender on the inside. With that said, I can understand why some people think it is a bit pricey but once you try it, you'll realize that you get what you pay for and be totally satisfied. I will never order from the Yen Ching Midlothian location ever again! Worse customer service I have ever seen. I ordered the Crispy Chicken last night and told them NOT spicy, however when I got home to eat it later it was EXTREMELY spicy so I ate the rest of my meal (chicken w. broccoli) and decided since it was late I would call the next day. So today I call and explain the problem and was told it would NOT be replaced because I didn't call last night and they don't know whose fault it is. I have been eating at Yen Ching for years and I have ALWAYS gotten the crispy chicken NOT spicy. After arguing with the Manager back and forth I asked him if he was willing to lose me as a loyal customer (I eat there about once a week) his response was I'm sorry you should have called yesterday.... We ordered dinner, they said 45min to 1 hour...... We had to call because it was over an hour and then when the food arrived it was ice cold. I called and they said it was cold because they were busy and had a lot of deliveries. I explained I paid $29.00+ for cold food and they said their was no manager their to help me, they would have to call me later. When they called back to tell us that the delivery guy said it was under and hour ..... Not sorry your food was ice cold but dismissed that fact and kept cutting us off and not getting to the real issue... Then offered us $6.00 off next order, Really! Cold food + bad customer service (from the manager) for the $$$ is definitely not worth the extended wait. Will not order from this restaurant again. read more
