Authentic Hong Kong Taste in Richmond, BC Dropped by on a rainy day--perfect timing for some comfort food. We shared a few classics: - Wonton & Dumpling Noodle Soup ($16) - bite-sized wontons and dumplings with springy noodles in a flavorful broth. - Pork Liver Congee ($13.25) - silky congee with pork liver cooked to the right consistency. - Taro & Pork Spring Roll ($8.75) - crisp and satisfying. Portions are true Hong Kong style--smaller, so you may want to order a couple of dishes to make it a full meal. Prices lean on the higher side, but the quality is there. Staff were friendly and courteous, which added to the cozy atmosphere. Overall, a great spot to drop in for a quick snack or light meal, especially when you're craving authentic Hong Kong flavors.
Always come here for a bowl of good wonton noodle soup every time we are in Vancouver. The parking situation was much improved this time because customers had to register their license plate numbers. This is definitely an improvement because in the past we always had a hard time finding parking. The restaurant decor is simple and basic, nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. The serving staff was very friendly and efficient. Our party of eight shared some deep fried dace fish balls, claypot rice with pork ribs and black bean sauce, and claypot rice with chicken and Chinese sausage. Each one of us also had a bowl of wonton and dumplings noodle soup. Everything was absolutely delicious. The wontons and dumplings tasted just like those top notch ones in Hong Kong. The noodle and soup quality was also amazing. The dace fish balls and claypot rice were also excellent. Highly recommended!
This place used to be the reason I'm jealous of people who live in Vancouver because they have access to such authentic wonton noodles. I was a bit disappointed this time around. They are known for their wonton noodles so of course I ordered it. The wonton were appropriately placed at the bottom so the noodles don't get soggy easily. However, although the soup base is better than what we get in the east coast, the 大地魚 aroma was significantly less than what it used to be. The noodles were also a bit overcooked and soggy for my liking. I do like the fact the size of the wonton are normal and not a size of your fist, and I also like that there's also pork in it versus all the ones we have in Toronto are mainly shrimp. However, I feel there were too much peppers in it which overpowered the flavors of the fillings. We went on a Friday for lunch and it wasn't very busy. Service was quick as it should be. Overall, I was disappointed and will probably won't be back.
Really solid and authentic Cantonese food. Fast service -- feels like this places has been doing this for literally decades. Don't be fooled by its appearance. We also got a side of fried chicken wings -- perfect pairing and meal size for two.

My friend raved about this place and indeed, they were on point as authentic Hong Kong noodle house. I ordered the brisket dumpling noodle soup. It is a common humble Chinese dish. The serving was small for Western standards but it was just the right portion for me. Every facet about this dish was outstanding. The soup was rich with many complex flavors. The noodle had a bounce to it.The meat was tender and flavorful. The dumpling skin and contents were great too. When I come back to Vancouver, must come to this place as top of my list.
This review is based on just wonton. I no longer can recommend the wonton noodle unfortunately. After the pandemic, the noodle texture changed and no longer good like before. Wonton on the other hand still very tasty just like those best wonton in HK. The soup also maintain the quality.

When we eventually got our table, we quickly ordered. Got the wonton noodle soup of course. Unfortunately, the noodles were a tad overcooked for my taste with not enough bounce when bit into. The wontons and the soup itself were nothing to write home about. This was also pricier than a similar sized wonton soup bowl in Toronto.

Some friends introduced me to this place because they love the won ton. I got the beef brisket and tendon wonton noodle soup. The brisket and tendon were tender and flavorful. The wontons were some of the best I've had (though they were hiding under the noodles). Noodles had the perfect bite. We also got gailan and seafood jook/congee. Both were delicious! I'd order everything again and again. Next time I'm in Vancouver, BC, I definitely want to return to Max Noodle House!
Reminds me of those streetside restaurants in Hong Kong. Home-style Hong Kong food. Nothing fancy, but very authentic. The food won't blow your mind but when you want comfort food, this is a good choice.
Small Cantonese noodle and congee shop amongst the many eateries on Alexandra Rd. Been here for a long time, and it' a series of restaurants from Hong Kong that's known for their wonton noodles. Very traditional looking interior. Menu is limited to mostly noodles and congee, with some small side dishes and claypot rice. Cash only. Got their signature wonton noodles and a side of beef brisket and tendons. Food was served pretty quickly. The beef tendon and brisket are soft without being too soft, and full flavor. The wontons are not big, but pretty tasty. Noodles are good with a little bit of chew, and soup base is as expected. The taste is very authentic and no complaints there. The portions however are pretty small. For $13.5 you get a six inch bowl of noodles, and the $17 beef comes on a pretty small plate as well. Maybe more akin to traditional HK portions lol, but definitely the smallest bowl of Chinese soup noodles I've had in North America. They do fill up the bowl and plates, but they look so small at first glance. Overall, taste is good but portion is pretty small. I prefer Tsim Chai Noodles for wonton noodles in Richmond.
$16 for a small bowl of beef stew wonton noodle soup. Factoring in the conversion of CAD to USD, may be it was decent. Nothing ordinary, very typical wonton noodle soup. The fried fish paste balls were also standard. The congee tasted better there than the ones we have here in the US. Not sure if it was due to the water or the rice mixture they used. All in all, would go back again only if it's enroute. read more

This is very authentic Hong Kong style wonton noodles The noodles have a perfect texture. The dumpling skins are thin and the filling is nicely seasoned. The size of the serving is very small though - so if you're hungry you'll need a couple bowls to fill you up! Note - cash only! read more

CASH ONLY! A friend highly recommended this restaurant especially for their wonton noodle soup. My boyfriend and I were already super full, but we had to make our way here as it was highly recommended LOL. It's located on the corner of the Alexandra Plaza in Richmond. There's a parking lot with ample parking in the area for all the other restaurants. I got the Supreme Wonton Noodle Soup. I was wondering what the difference was between that and the House Special Wonton Soup in which the waitress informed me that one had noodles (the one I chose) and the other didn't. Definitely wanted noodles in mine LOL. The order came out FAST. The meal looked really small (peep at pic) but was at the same time, quite filling. The broth was a nostalgic wonton soup that I really enjoyed! It gave me very Hong Kong style vibes with a deep flavor that was very addicting. There might have been some MSG (not a lot as I didn't need to finish my water) but that really made the entire dish sooo good. The wontons were delicious! They were nicely "wrapped and sealed" that it didn't give too much of a looseness nor tightness in the meat. Making wontons are quite challenging as I tried it once, and the meat was waayyy too tight inside the wrappers. LOL. The noodles were yellow noodles and cooked to al dente which I really liked. My boyfriend got the Lo Mein with Shrimp & Pork Dumplings. His had a broth on the side which he got to enjoy after eating his dry noodles which were exactly like mine but without broth. The shrimp and pork dumplings were also delicious! So much flavor in them too! Definitely will be back for more comfort wonton noodle soup in the future! I would love to try their braised beef brisket with the wontons next time. This restaurant reminds me of a similar restaurant in Chinatown Seattle: Mike's Noodle House. Same noodles, similar broth styles, and wontons! Very happy that we have something similar in Washington! read more

In terms of quality, I think this place has the best bowls of noodles. I've only tried the beef brisket noodles and they are so good. The brisket is flavorful and tender, the broth is nice and clear and the noodles are perfectly cooked. The downside is the bowls are so tiny, you would need at least 2 bowls to get full. Each bowl of noodles is around $10 bucks. The service is ok, not too friendly. It's not a big restaurant, more on the smaller side I would say. They have a parking lot but during the busy hours (lunch time etc.) it gets pretty full. Whenever I'm back in Richmond this is the first place I think about............. read more

Max Noodle House has been around for a long time, so as a tradition we had to visit on a recent Vancouver trip for nostalgia's sake. Disclaimer, I was already feeling so stuffed before this meal that my taste buds may not be accurate for this review! We came for an afternoon snack around 3pm on a Sunday, and we were seated immediately. The servers were pretty friendly and sociable. I tried a bit of the dumpling noodle soup, and it tasted super salty? The texture of the noodles was good, but the overall taste deterred me from eating any more. Not sure if this was because I was already so full, but I don't think I could finish a whole bowl even if I was hungry because of the saltiness. My family said the wontons and congee was quite good, so maybe it was just an off dish. This place is cash only, so make sure to bring cash if you plan to eat here. However, I feel like unless you really are craving wonton noodle soup, there are better places to eat in this area. read more

This is the BEST place for Hong Kong style egg noodles. I lLOVE their extra fine noodle version copied from the famous Mak's (?) noodle house in Hong Kong. It's delicate and delicious, with true egg flavour and no ammonia aftertaste. In HK, the noodles are served in a small bowl. Here, it's served on a plate. I think the portion size is perfect and I appreciate quality over quantity. My favourite lo mein version is served with the spicy brown pork sauce. I'm so glad this place survived the pandemic lockdown as it's my go to place for egg noodles, rice noodles and congee. Service is fast and the ambiance is typical of these type of joints...more functional than appealing. The only reason I took off 1 star is that I personally prefer cleaner, more modern places. My chopsticks felt a bit greasy, like they weren't washed properly. Otherwise, the food is solid and the sole reason to come here. Nobody else makes better fine egg noodles! read more
I'm in Noodle heaven! If you want to part away from the usual "el dante" pasta feel, come check out this kind of style of Asian noodles. The texture is of which that not only bounces off your teeth but a bit "crunchy", if you will, and so much easier to "slurp" thanks to the very thin strands. Also mush order: Fish balls. They use the freshest fish meat to make into balls that you can tell have been hand spun so many times to have developed that elasticity when bitten into. Also because they're deep fried, the crunch is like none other. The only thing I'm not used to is perhaps the tiny serving bowls and plates. Perhaps that is true Hong Kong style, so I'm not complaining, it's a very unique experience! read more
I had heard that this spot was comparable to Mikes noodle house in Seattle so I came here with a group of my friends while we were visiting VBC. There are a variety of noodles soups, wontons and dumplings, noodle dishes, and congees. Overall, Max's was alright but I still prefer Mike's in Seattle. Food I ordered the braised beef wonton noodle soup and it was alright. The wontons were my favorite part of the dish but they were pretty small and few of them. The noodles were good and the beef was soft and tender. My girlfriend ordered the congee and I tried a bite of it and it was good as well. Atmosphere We went on a Saturday evening for dinner with a group of 10 people and we were seated immediately (partly due to it being completely empty). Large restaurant with plenty of seating at tables or booths. Clean in the inside and good for a family setting. Pricing Prices were similar (13.5 CAD) similar when compared to Mikes noodle house in Seattle (13.5 USD for large). But I feel like the portion size and taste was not up to par compared to Mikes. Service Service was good and staff was friendly. They were able to bring out the food quickly and accurately despite our large group. Other Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. read more

The wonton and noodles are not my favourite. Sorry, I can't suggest this place even though I know the workers here are trying to keep the restaurant going. I sincerely hope they will not overcook the vegetables and the noodles. Most importantly I hope they wrap their wontons with fresher ingredients to bring back customers. read more
If you're looking for good wonton noodle soup, Max Noodle House is the place to go. If you ask any local Cantonese folks, they're likely to have the same recommendation. The wonton noodle soup here costs $12.50 before tax. A little bit expensive in my opinion for four wontons and some noodles, but I guess if you have this type of reputation, you can charge whatever you want. The appetizers here are really good too, but like the noodles, the dishes are pretty pricey. I enjoyed the beef shank and jellyfish - $20. The beef slices had good tendon to lean meat ratio, the slices were cut thin, and the amount of spiciness was perfect. The jelly fish strands were crisp and refreshing. The fried fish balls had good flavor, but the outside layer was a bit tough to chew through and I found a pretty sizable fish bone in one of the balls I ate. Cash only. read more

My last review was in 2018...and things were not up to par at that time...fast forward to 2021 ( in between I had been there a few times but reserved till now to update my review to ensure consistency ). Happy to report that their standard has improved since, still not to the true Hong Kong standard, but hey we are miles & miles away and this is the closest one can get to taste a bowl of wonton noodles in its truest sense! Noodles are al dente, the soup is well balanced with seafood & pork bone flavour, wonton is on point with shrimp & pork ratio. Other items worth trying are their congees, you can pick & choose different toppings. Price is on the high side when considering the portion size, but wonton noodles has become a kind of connoisseur item, even in Hong Kong a smaller bowl can cost HK$40+ which is like CDN$6 or $7!! So it is like a treat to have once in a while... Anyways, the fact that they cans till be in business after 28 yrs. shows that there are a solid group of followers! read more
We ordered the wonton noodle soup with brisket. The food/ wonton noodles was pretty good. The price and portions were NOT so good. We paid $12 CAN and the bowl was pretty tiny. I was so confused when I first received it because all the brisket was on top and I couldn't see the wontons. I had to ask the server where the wontons were LOL. She said " It is on the bottom of the bowl under the noodles. " So I reached and found two small little wontons at the bottom of the bowl...it was like digging for treasures... read more
Every time I leave Vancouver, this is one of the first places I visit the week I'm back. It's a classic that reminds me of home because I grew up coming here. They're a chain originated from Hong Kong and it's fascinated me how the quality over the years have never changed. COVID protocols: I've only picked up throughout this time but I've had this 3 times since the pandemic started. It was closed for a while but once they opened, I came back again and again. My order: Dace fish balls 5/5 Deep fried chicken knee 5/5 Lo mein with shredded pork in spicy brown sauce 4/5 Braised beef brisket and tendon with wide rice noodles in soup 5/5 Dace fish balls can be an acquired taste but it's something I order each time I swing by. It's crispy and not something I've really ever ordered anywhere else. The lo mein is something I'd order if I crave a dry noodle versus a soup noodle and it never disappoints. With the soup noodles, you have the option to change the noodles you'd like-- I usually get wide rice noodles (河粉） read more
Don't expect much when it comes to service, but the wontons, noodles, and soup are truly exceptional! Back at home, I make my own wonton filling, because many of the local restaurants even in the big cities (e.g. NYC, Philly, etc.) are just not satisfying. I was quite proud of my own recipe, but the wontons and soup at Max Noodle House make me want to retire from cooking! So much flavor is packed into these simple, Cantonese dishes - it truly makes me wonder. The vibe is casual and modest, which is just what I'd expect from this kind of establishment. read more
