This was an unexpected gem! So I was winding down the National Tour of A Christmas Carol in Birmingham, and my girlfriend and I were looking for gluten free friendly restaurant. Lo, less than a mile from our hotel was Yo Mama's. My girlfriend ordered the Gluten Free Chicken and Waffles, and I had the Shrimp & Grits. It was amazing! Their maple syrup must be some kind home made magic sauce because it might be the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The lemonade was perfect. The staff was friendly and informative about the menu. The prices were reasonably low compared to the the vegan restaurant my friends dragged me to the night before. It's an absolute travesty that food TV shows and local hotels recommend Yo' Mama's for "local and authentic" Birmingham food. I think it's because the reviews on Yelp are decent despite the fact that everyone I talk to about this place will never go back. I would rather eat chicken from a truck stop KFC at 3:45 in the afternoon than have another meal at Yo' Mama's. The service is slow, and you should expect at least one mistake or forgotten item when ordering for a whole table at once. But that can be forgiven when the food is good. It's not. The hot wings are sweeter than they are hot. Just overwhelmingly sweet in a dish that doesn't need any sugar at all. They come with floppy fries. You know the sort. Fried a little bit less than they should have been and then steamed nicely. The side of coleslaw was mostly sugar. I know I shouldn't have gotten the BBQ burger at a place like this, so perhaps you should disregard this paragraph. The burger is one of those bulging puck burgers your uncle makes when he tricks you into letting him grill. It was overcooked and unseasoned unless you include the sweetest barbecue sauce I have ever tasted as seasoning. Served with more floppy fries. I honestly don't know how the reviews of this place are so good. Look for yourself on their website. You just know those fries are going to be floppy, that burger is a puck, and that shrimp and grits is soup. Food Network and local hotels: I know Yo' Mama's checks a lot of your boxes when you're looking for places to recommend to tourists. But the most important box is good cooking, and if this were my only meal in Birmingham, I'd never return to this city. read more

As a group we did NOT see the sign about NOT having a seat before ordering. However, the cashier pointed it out to us and VERY rudely said we SHOULD be able to read. It got to the point we offered to leave, of course the cashier didn't care, but one member with us insisted we let the rudeness go, ignore the cashier, and stay since we were already there. I have never been where I felt like I had to cave just to give someone my hard earned money. The food was exactly what I expected. Real people making real food. The seasoning was perfect (didn't have to add any salt, pepper, or sauce). Food came out hot and fresh. And was not just thrown on a plate and served. They took their time with plating the food. The fruit punch was awesome. The only turn down was that the floors were sticky. I've been going here since a freshman in college abs it is hands down the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken is so succulent so juicy and the Belgian waffle is so light especially the syrup so mouth watering. I always order their hot chicken and Belgian waffle with fruits and whip cream on top and to this day I haven't trusted any other place it's honestly an experience your taste buds will never forget. I was really upset that they closed up for majority of Covid when it was at its peak but I understand safety first and for a while they were doing curbside orders only no dining in but still I wouldn't go because I rather sit at the establishment and eat mamas amazing food. I'm also proud that they took all the necessary precautions during Covid height and still continue to practice social distancing, masks, limit amount of people in and out, have hand sanitizer on deck.
