You're going to sweat, push yourself to the brink, and you're going to love it. The room does get packed so get there early to change, set up your mat and towel (a must), then acclimate to the room temperature. You might need to bring an extra towel if you're prone to overheating and sweating. Instructors are super helpful explaining poses and guiding you if needed. Everyone there makes the experience pleasant and you start to notice regulars. Just a good vibe overall. read more

I liked everything about this place except one thing. The location is a local spot, quaint, relaxing and private, I saw this as place calm, practice driven people would be looking for in a hot yoga place. First instructor was awesome and great- so sorry I don't remember name. On my second visit I brought my fiancé and friend and there was a different instructor. The parking in the location is a bit tight, it's an older spot in east sac so that's kinda expected. There are signs and after a few visits I am sure clients got it down. As I said this was my second time and my fiancé drives a larger truck so we were trying our best. We realized we needed to move once we got unpacked and were in process when a man came out and said we need to move as we parked one to far to the left and it was for the business next to the yoga place. We let him know we understood and were in process. He then told us 3-4 more times, as we stood there agreeing each time!! We walk in and he's at the front desk area, I let him know I got a pass for my fiancé. He spent a few moments looking and then expressed frustration that it was hard to find and didn't know what to do really. It ended up being doubled up under my name and he just marked it under me which didn't make sense because how will we come back to use pass if he just marked it under my name? Not a technology person thats okay but some patience and letting us explain would have been nice. Note: we came early as I thought new client waiver and sign in might take a moment. I also brought a friend and she needed a mat, this seemed to anger him and he said it cost money but just grab it so he doesn't have to deal with it. In class he made us "beginners " - new to his class and this location- identify ourselves (we all have practiced yoga at other locations and for extended amounts of time). While moving through the class he said beginners don't do this or that, I felt frustrated because I am paying for a class and being told not to do poses I usually do just because he thinks I shouldn't ...due to him not taking time to ask my actual experience level. During the class myself, fiancé and friend all did poses we felt more than comfortable doing and got called out to stop doing things we shouldn't do, loudly from across the room. He obviously knew some people in the class and was encouraging to some but absolutely belittling my "group". I don't know why this happened, maybe he was just having a bad day, maybe that's how he treats "beginners"/new clients. I really wanted to do more classes and comeback but after that class I just let the 30 day pass go and never went back. I have a lot more to say but feel like it would just be ranting and not helpful. Overall I was so excited to use this place and was so upset and disappointing leaving that day. read more

The teachers here are all very kind. I tried the introductory month and i have been 3 times so far. Each of the teachers does it slightly differently but they don't call anyone out in particular. Just a gentle tap or readjustment which I've really appreciated. This was my first time trying bikram and it was hard but well worth it. I'm going to try to go 9 more times to make it even more worth it! 40 dollars for unlimited classes a month is a reallt good deal! Went to evening class, 1st time, based on solid reviews. Room was "warm" at best, with no humidity. Teacher didnt follow Bikram dialogue and went off on a few tangents. Parked behind studio in parking lot. Car was broken into and briefcase and box stolen. Left 3 vmails for owner, no call back, even to say "so sorry this happened." I started coming to Yoga Loka when my dad bought me the 30-day Unlimited Hot Yoga Groupon. I've been going every day since I started and finally decided I had a good feel for the place so I could write my review. First and foremost, this is a tiny yoga studio (emphasis on tiny). Parking can be a bit of a hassle so I always try down one of the side streets. If you're very lucky you may get a spot out front. The layout of the studio is a little funky too but it adds to its charm. The men's changing room is located upstairs, behind the front desk. The women's changing room is just outside the studio doors and consists of hanging curtains. I think because the studio is smaller, it keeps the community more intimate and everyone seems to know each other. Everyone I've ever met and practiced with at Yoga Loka is extremely friendly. The class itself is classic Bikram yoga. You do every pose twice and the class is always 90 minutes. They do a good job with temperature regulation and the instructors are very helpful. They are always willing to come show you ways to get better into a posture and get the most out of your practice. I absolutely love hot yoga and have missed practicing. I am so glad to have this Groupon and have unlimited hot yoga for the next month. They offer a wide variety of class times to fit most peoples' schedules. read more

Quaint, quirky...and HOTTT as hell! Thank goodness they got rid of their carpet!! Granted, it's been about 8-10 years since I was last there, I was really dreading that gross, smelly, sweat-stained carpet. But lo and behold, they have wood flooring now! As hippy-esque as it comes. No frills about their studio, but quaint and perfect for what it represents. You walk into, what seems like a side/patio door of a house, and there is minimal spacing for you to hang out. The pseudo desk is like a mini table. Sign in and get ready for what yoga in hell is like (just kidding, kinda). The instructor was very welcoming and did not shame you into poses. He lightly directs you if your poses are off or slightly inaccurate. They have a plethora of towels available for you in the studio, grab 5, no joke! The studio felt completely clean, although I bet more sweat goes on in there than a pro football players pads They also have bins, in the changing area, so you can toss your gross little sweat rags in there when you are done. Their changing area is a little jankey set up, but you don't need much when your changing sweat soaked clothes. Thankfully to Living Social, I was able to get a good rate of $25 for 30 days, but otherwise, I wouldn't normally be able to afford this (painful, yet great) luxury. Definitely not for beginners! A friend and I went through a living social deal. We both had done some yoga in the past but were in no way experienced. Bill the owner was very nice and the process to get started was easy. As most people mentioned the smell in the studio is horrific but not totally unbearable unless you have a weak stomach. The thing that bothered me was that the instructor new she had beginning students yet didn't come and assist us or even instruct us how to do modifications of the moves that would be easier for us like I've experienced in many other yoga classes. My friend also had an adverse reaction and started feeling nauseous. She had to leave the room, tried to come back and then left again. The instructor kept leaving the room to turn up and down the heat yet she didn't once ask her if she was okay. Yet when another student left the room she checked on him immediately. It made me feel as if it was discriminatory against folks that were considered beginners. Their website says beginners welcome but if you are I would say to stay away. read more

It's so packed at the 630 weekday classes that it is literally person to person. Great teachers. Kally is prob my favorite, but I like all that I have had. As others have said, the locker rooms are just a sheet and you are like a pinball in there bouncing off all the other people. Too small and when you go in and out, ppl in the hall can see in. Parking lot has very few spots, maybe 6 or so? Best bet is to park on the street. read more

Yoga Loka is one of the three yoga studios I've practiced at in Sacramento, and I'm definitely a fan. The good: Bill and Sandy are the real deal. You can tell they love what they do. And the other instructors are just as wonderful. They give you a great practice but aren't trying to make you pass out. You do what you can, and reap the benefits afterwards. When I first came to the studio, Yoga Loka had a carpet floor with sweat stains, but since then they've upgraded to a nice wood floor that can be easily cleaned. Also, Bikram can be expensive. I like that Yoga Loka generally has a Groupon or Living Social special, and will allow you to use this promotion if you haven't been to the studio in over a year. Good to know: If you're new to hot yoga, make sure to drink lots of fluids first, and bring a yoga mat, towel to cover the mat, and extra water. Wear clothes that are quick drying, NOT 100% cotton, because you're going to get drenched. Go in a little early to meet the instructor--then prepare yourself for 90 minutes in a 104 degree room. When you lay down your mat, if space allows, make sure that you can see yourself at least partially in the mirror, and that you can spread your arms without hitting your neighbor's arms in the same pose when lying down. Also, it's considerate if you don't block anyone in the row behind you at the same time. There are 26 postures, and the two I look forward to the most are triangle pose (one of the last standing poses before we get to lay down on the mats), and the camel pose (sometimes torturous, but one of the final postures so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel). They do have showers, but they are outside and co-ed (with separate changing rooms). When it's chilly outside, it's not the most ideal situation. I normally just bring a change of clothes and wait until I'm home to wash off my sweat. Would I recommend? Yes, Bikram makes you feel good. I have a love-hate relationship (hate going in, love how I feel afterwards), and I've already introduced the practice and this studio to several friends. read more

This isn't bad for a Bikram studio, which are notoriously known for their authoritarian owners. You will feel better when you leave than when you came in. A lot of good hearted and kind people come here. And a consistent yoga practice has reduced stress and increased wellness for most of the students I've talked to. Just remember to listen to your body above all else, including what the instructor proposes. This studio used to be owned by a darling yogi couple and a year or so ago, it was bought by Michael. He required the yoga teachers he inherited to follow his written script for their classes. So every teacher said the exact same things, at the exact same times and robotically. The best teachers left, which was sad. The pandemic brought even more changes with Michael being the only teacher. He has a fond appreciation for Bikram, looking past Bikram's history of sexual assault and discrimination. And Michael, like many Bikram followers, urges students to move in concert, as if yoga was a synchronized event. Michael is very structured around technique which can be helpful to beginners but more moments of silence would be well received. He is less tethered to a meditative approach that aims to create a mind body connection. You will rarely hear reminders about connecting or centering to the self, kindness to body or self, awareness of breath, scanning the body, or softening tight muscles through the breath. His practice is more about what is right or wrong, how high can you lift, how much you can reach, and oddly, locking your knee. (Highly recommend discussing locking your knee with a doc or PT b/c many don't recommend it). If it matters, Michel's own yoga practice is ok from a technical perspective. So it's interesting that he will publicly disapprove of a student's pose during class even if the pose is fine, good, or like many other poses in the class. He will also recite reasons why students should or should not do something that have no basis in fact or reality. So, it comes across like a control issue. One student remarked that he seemed more like a physical fitness teacher than a yoga teacher. Some people prefer this and for those folks, I'd highly recommend Michael. You can tell he has spent a lot of time investigating technique and will freely share what he knows with others. Michael has a calm voice and offers a better practice than other Bikram studios in Sacramento. And Hot yoga is good for the soul. After the pandemic passes, there may be instructors that offer a variety of approaches to this Hatha yoga practice. read more

Love, love , LOVE bikram!!! You'll definitely sweat and your skin will glow! I started yoga a few months ago and it's been positively addicting! Friends suggested me to try bikram and I was nervous at first because I don't like the heat or sweating. Well, after a few times, I must say that it's awesome and I look forward to it. The room fits about 45 people I think. It does and can stink (keep in mind, people sweat) during class. They offer mat and towel rentals. They also sell bottled water. Overall, the instructors are pretty nice. My recommendations: - Drink lots of water (2 hours before class and after class) - You can use a beach towel if you don't have a yoga towel - Cotton is highly NOT recommended for clothing - Wear fitted clothing (I like sports bra and boy shorts) - Tight tandem parking (there is a small parking lot next to the entry but parking on the streets is better) Have fun! read more

after a girlfriend told me about bikram yoga, i decided to research the practice and set about finding a studio close enough to begin my journey. after reading reviews on the various places in the greater sacto area and fanatically reading their websites i felt confident in trying the 10 days for $20 intro special at Yoga Loka. WOW am i sooo glad i did!!! it sits in an alley way between One Speed restaurant and a hair salon/barber shop. parking can be a pain in the arse with the street parking and a small small lot behind the studio you have to double park in. after reading others' reviews i want to comment on a few things... let's just get the smell issue out of the way from the start... i honestly have no idea what other reviewers speak of when mentioning a *foul odor* in the studio? i only smell a fresh scent when walking in. there's 2 separate changing rooms set up for men and women with a bathroom on each side. no there isn't a locker room with showers and such as this is supposed to be a humble and enlightening experience. there's showers behind the studio set up like a zen garden which actually adds to the tranquility. if you're new to Bikram and are not in the habit of drinking LOTS of water on a daily basis, please please please get in the habit at least a week before you start practicing. i can't say enough how important it is to be hydrated (rule of thumb is we should drink half our body weight in ounces- crazy but so beneficial). the studio has 1.5 L bottles to purchase as well as towels and mats to rent yes you will get dizzy/nauseous/feel a little sick when first starting Bikram, but stick with it! after a few classes your body acclimates to the temperature. to avoid soreness from kicking your butt, go to class for 3 days in a row if you can and let your body respond to the asanas (poses) men... definitely don't shy away from practicing! the classes are a mix of men and women wearing swim shorts and bikini's to shorts/sports bras and tank tops/bare chests. no one cares how you look! i'm not a skinny minnie and no one in class judges or looks down on me by any means. when asking questions everyone has been very helpful and eager to share info. i can't say enough how much i enjoy practicing at Yoga Loka and look forward to class every time. just seeing how much my body has responded in the last 2 weeks (i went 8 of the 10 days) is motivation enough to stick with it and enjoy the 90 minutes of endorphins. read more

110...114...118?! YIKES! It is really going to stay this hot, the entire hour and a half? Oh my gawd, what have I got myself into? I decided while training for my marathon to try out 'hot' yoga at Yoga Loka on Folsom. I took advantage of the 10 days for $10 special they offer new students! Boy, what a deal! Yoga classes, in general can be very expensive, but I guess that's the price you pay for mental well being. I try to use these specials whenever possible because I do love yoga, but it is not an expense I can afford often. If you decide to do hot yoga, please remember to take A LOT of water & an electrolyte replacement drink like Gatorade or vitamin water...you WILL sweat buckets! The class is awesome. I feel so relaxed & exhausted all at the same time. It is a wonderful feeling. I guess the point of the hot room is to help deepen each pose, but because of the extreme heat, you really need to be prepared! Like I said before WATER, AGUA, H2O...oh, and a large towel to put over your yoga mat! Have fun losing 4lbs of water weight! read more

I purchased a groupon or living social deal early this year for myself and my husband. We both came as much as possible to get use to the heat, which we never did! lol But i got addicted to hot yoga and soon joined monthly once our deal was up.. It Hot, Humid and Sweaty, I love it! All the instructors are very kind and help you with your poses if you look like your going to hurt yourself or try to get you deeper in the pose.. I think i pretty much had every instructor in the studio... Their all awesome. The mens locker room is upstairs and the womens in down by the entrance of the yoga room, which is covered by sheets. So if you know theres nakies in there changing, try to wait and open the curtain after that guy walks by. Theres 2 bathrooms you can change in, if your uncomfortable about that or being naked around 10 other women in a 5 foot radius.. The studio is small and owned by Bill and Sandy. Who are also instructors. But the fact that it IS small and locally owned, is why i love it that much more.. Sadly Im not on a monthly membership any longer. But soon ill be coming back weekly, i can tell my body needs it. Hot yoga has helped me with my achy joints, lumbar back pain and hip flexor pain, my endurance for long durations of cardio, and even helped me in my recovery after heavy lifting. Its very peaceful and quiet..a place to focus on yourself and your body. If your new make sure to come 20 mins before to fill out a form. Bring some water (drink plenty of water before you come), a yoga mat and a towel to put over your mat, don't eat a lot before a yoga class or even hours prior to it (you will want to vomit). This is probably one of the only places you can wear a sports bra and tiny shorts and NO ONE is paying attention to you. Tight fitting clothing is best i believe. They also have hand towels for you if you don't bring your own. Hair UP or in a braid if you don't want a nest at the end of class.. Bring a change of clothes and underwear if you sweat a lot before getting in your car.. esp if you have cloth or suede seats.. Oh and no make up, your face will melt off. =) Everyone looks like a sweaty hot mess in awkward unflattering poses! But they make you look and feel amazing after. If you ever get TO hot in the class, you can walk out quietly, and enter when your ready.. They have their own small parking lot where everyone blocks each other in, but you can park on the street and walk over, i think you can even park behind Larrys shoes and or CVS and walk over.. Just don't block up the first couple spots that are reserved for the salon. You will get called out to move your car so pay attention. Theres outdoor showers and changing rooms to the side of the building also. Oh and each class is 90 mins of this. Good luck! read more

I'm back. Oh it's like coming home. This place is technically NOT bikram yoga, but HOT YOGA that follows Bikram poses, as stated on the website, which might be why some hardcore Bikram folks may be getting all upset over "being able to leave the room." As a health care provider and someone who's done bodywork for over a decade, I personally find their approach more open, friendly and healthy than the "stay in here and risk heat stroke to get rid of your toxins/go past your comfort zone to the point of injury" attitude that many purist Bikram studios exhibit. They have a relaxed yet disciplined vibe towards the practice that keeps people coming again and again. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I still totally love Bill and Sandy. And the energy is awesome here. It's simple, kinda hippy, and to to the point. And they are just so incredibly friendly. If I could give 10 stars, I would. read more

Ahhhhhhhhh....breathe in - breathe out. Doesn't that feel better? Now imagine being stress-free for 90 minutes every time you take a yoga class at Yoga Loka. My fiancee and I have been going here for about 3 months - and are trying to make it a part of our wedding diet plan. While that plan is still waiting for our full commitment, I can say that ever since we've started, we feel differently about yoga and being present in the moment. I'm not here to tell you how to feel about yoga - I'm just here to tell you that Yoga Loka offers excellent teachers, an intense and fulfilling workout and best of all...no judgement if you can't pull of all the poses. That's what I was most afraid of with yoga, or workout classes in general. Here, you're free to be a beginner that lies down 50 times in one class, or be a kickass yoga star that never skips a beat. We're all mixed together in the same class and we're all trying to achieve the same goal. That's what I really cherish from this yoga studio, and that's why I keep coming back. Try to get a class with Mercury - he's usually in the 8:30 class and is a wonderful teacher. Words of advice for your first class: Dont' eat 2 to 3 (preferred) hours ahead of time - or you'll be sure to want to vomit during class. Not pretty....Bring PLENTY of water, a towel along with your yoga mat and DON'T you dare bring your cell phone. I've seen a girl almost get choked out because of that last one....again, not pretty. Every instructor is not only professional and helpful, but they are just really great people. You always leave feeling very centered and happy. I was a little worried at first because I've never done yoga before, let alone hot yoga. But joining Yoga Loka definitely made me realize that it was probably one of the best decisions I've made so far this year. (If it's your first time, show up 30 minutes before the class you're attending) Instructors: you couldn't believe how wonderful they all are! Right from the very first class I attended, Bill was so welcoming and took the time to make sure I was doing the postures right. This goes for the other instructors I've had the pleasure of having as well! Sandy, Jihong, and Mercury! They're all just awesome! Environment: it's really crazy how the nicest people I've met was here at Yoga Loka. You'd be surprised yourself too! Everyone's smiling and always greet you when they come your way. No one gets mad when you go to the bathroom too! There have been other studious I've heard about from my friends who don't allow you to go to the bathroom or even drink a sip of water unless it's break time. Now with me being new at this (1 month), I need all the water I can drink and when I need to go to the bathroom, I NEED TO GO. So it's pretty awesome they don't mind that I do. All in all, this place definitely deserves 5 stars. I purchased a Groupon deal, one month unlimited yoga classes for $20---and I managed to only go once. I've done yoga before but it was my first time trying hot yoga. It was definitely a good first time experience but it really does take self-discipline to be able to do this on the daily. I give props to those people out there! I've never sweated so much in my life, to the point when my head was down, I started to taste it, lol. Oh, and do not forget your water bottles! This is the site of my first bikram class. I got a real kick out of the young woman instructor who was parading around in her new knee high black leather boots before class started. She was very excited about the recent splurge. All the instructors that I have encountered at Yoga Loka have been good at explaining the postures. One teacher, Jupiter (or some other planet name) teaches a Sunday Astrology yoga course that I have been meaning to attend. Students supposedly gain a birth chart reading on their first visit. The "secret" outdoor showers in the back are the perfect retreat after a super hot class. The setting is a treat for the senses. Smooth, black river stones cover the ground and creeping vines wind around the lattice over head. The showers and changing rooms are actually in the backyard of the next door house out of which the yoga studio's owners run an antique store. S. and I to browsed around the shop before eating dinner on the porch steps and chatting with one of the owners one time after a class. My only frustration with this studio is that the room temperature isn't automatically regulated so the instructors have to gauge when to turn on and off the fan. Unfortunately, they tend to be acclimated to the heat and not realize when it has gone beyond the normal 105/110 degrees. Sometimes it seems too hot to stand, but I have always made it through and never gotten sick. S. gets a rush off the intensity, so he doesn't mind the extra degrees. read more

Bikram yoga itself rocks and kicks ass, but this studio could step up a notch. Both Billy and Sally seemed nice and lead the practice , and the introductory fee is so affordable that everyone should give Bikram a chance. HOWEVER, this studio smells funny. Not funny ha-ha, but funny b-a-d. I thought it was my sweaty self, because let's face it, Bikram makes me sweat a bucket-load, but after a few visits, I've found that it really is the carpet or something in the studio. I'm also not a fan of the door opening and closing throughout the practice nor the inconsistency of the (crazy, hot) temperature in the asana room. I'm sure that's why the door is opened once in awhile, but really, it just brings in the cooler air and totally sets me off my game. Why can't they some kind of vent instead? The changing room is very simplistic and minimal, but the cleanliness of the area rug is questionable. As far as the practice itself, Bikram at Yoga Loka is "easy." I've had the hardcore version of not being able to leave the room once practice is in session and using the floor for certain asanas to facilitate foot and leg strength rather than rely on friction of my mat. I could go on about my personal issues with Sally's and her teaching approach but I think the stench of the studio has given me all this negativity that I can't be objective about her. I'm also still a beginner that can't touch my damn forehead to my knee during certain stretches or do the camel pose without nearly passing out, so who am I to complain about Sally? Finally, I don't want karma to bite me in the ass for complaining publicly about someone who is trying to promote the goodness of what comes from Bikram practice. I think I just need practice more to get rid of all this crappy energy. Just not here. And I'm going to keep this at three stars, because being able to practice here, is better than not practicing at all. But I will look for another place! Namaste. read more

I will start this review by saying "I LOVE THIS PLACE!" I have been a fan for a while and can't believe I haven't written a review yet! I have tried many yoga studios and this one has made me comfortable and welcomed every time! (Not to mention sweaty and stretched out! lol) This is a hot yoga (Bikram style, but can't officially call themselves Bikram studio). The room is about 106 degrees which helps you to be more limber while doing all those poses. I can't come without having several towels and lots of ice water and I am not a sweaty person usually. These 90 minute class leave me drenched however. The instructors are all great! They talk you through your poses and explain exactly what you should be doing- tighten your butt, keep your knees and ankles together, tuck in your abs. lock your knees, etc. They are not a drill sergeant, they are true believers of giving you correct guidance to get the maximum out of your workout. Bill will usually give you insights about all the good you're doing to your body and you'll learn all kinds of things from him. I've had the pleasure of having 5 different instructors and all of them are great! A few tips: -align the top corners of your matt in between the white dots -if you have to take a break any time during class, that's ok! It's been 3 months since I started practicing hot yoga; what a change I've experienced in my body. At the beginning, I had a challenging time breathing and felt exhausted after class for several hours. Now, my breathing has greatly improved, I'm seeing definition in my stomach, and my energy level has increased immensely. What they say is true, 3 times a week, as in any sport or activity, is a must. I've challenged myself to 5 days for the next two weeks. read more

Yoga Loka has really helped me in multiple ways. 1. My Mental Health - I've become calmer. Less stressed about life. 2. My Outlook on Life - I've had realizations about the path I'm on and where I want to go and how I can go about getting there. 3. My Physical Health - I'm sleeping better, Eating better, and my weight is at a much healthier level Michael Mercury is the best instructor by far. All the instructors are great, but Mercury has become one of my favorite people. He's recommended a great book about yoga to me, when I dropped my wallet in the parking lot he returned it to me, he's helped me realize and understand things in my life through quotes & phrases he'll use during class, and he's gone out of his way to help me improve my practice. He is great with beginning students too. Mercury was extremely kind to my boyfriend that I brought in for his first time Bikram yoga class. My boyfriend was very reluctant about going, but after the class he wouldn't stop talking about how much he like Mercury. Mercury was encouraging and gave great directions. I've been coming to Yoga Loka for little over a year now. I plan to keep coming. This place is life altering. read more

I tried Hot Yoga for the first time last night and I was really proud and thankful that I did it. I've been looking for ways to start getting healthy and I have no motivation to run, so I figured this would be a great alternative. The staff is really friendly. Super friendly. The patrons aren't health snobs, or at least they do a good job hiding it. I was the only overweight person in the room and the only one who couldn't do a certain arm stretch, but I didn't feel so embarrassed. Sitting in a cold warehouse from 8-5, five days a week, the heated room was a welcomed change. I was able to stay throughout the whole class and I only left the room once for fresh air. They have a great introduction special; $10 for ten consecutive days. After one class, I felt great. I felt like I did something good for myself. I felt happy. Then I drove home and smoked a cigarette and had a french dip. Hey, there's gotta be a balance in life, right? You can rent mats, buy water, and rent towels all for $2 each. This place is rad and it's not overly hippy-ish, because sometimes that gets annoying. The guy who teaches during the day reminds me of that native American actor that was in an episode of Saved By the Bell; he taught Zack Morris about his native American ancestors. The only thing I didn't like was the thought of other people's sweat on my towel. I have yet to purchase my own mat, so until then I'm renting. The mats are sanitized, but still....the room is carpeted. Ain't no sanitizing that. Great place, I'm going again tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday and again next week. read more

I have been a regular to this place for almost a year. It is by far the best exercise for me (I dont have to wear 10 sports bras! yay!) The instructors are really great - I do wish that Bill taught more of the 630 classes. I work so I cant make it to his 430 ones. His wife Sandy is wonderful but she often loses track of time for the poses and forgets to turn the fan off (I was actually getting cold last time I went!). I hear that the 90 minute class can burn around 850 calories - if thats true then thats a darn good deal. There is definitely a really nice endorphin rush after the class that lasts for an hour or so. The classes are good in the winter when its so cold out, and surprisingly, really nice in the summer too. After you come out of there - the nasty sac heat doesn't feel so bad. read more

I reviewed this studio several years ago and gave it three stars due to the nasty carpet, hospital green walls and off the mark instruction. I am happy to report that I tried it again and had a wonderful experience. The asana room has been completely made over with beautiful hardwood floors, excellent lighting and neutral tones and is spotless. The changing areas, while a little shabby, are clean. There has been a pretty outdoor shower added. Best of all was Michael's instruction. He gave very detailed, clear direction on proper technique in a way that was not militant. His instruction was the perfect balance to enable a seasoned practitioner to push their edge while coaching beginners safely into and out of postures. He was soft spoken, kind, steady and knowledgeable--all traits you want in a yoga instructor. I got an excellent work out as I always do but it felt extremely relaxing because of his calm energy. read more

Ohhh hot yoga... so hot... so sweaty...but so worth it! I was looking for a new activity when I stumbled on the groupon deal ($20/month) which BTW, is a REALLY REALLY GOOD deal! I've never done yoga before, and I've also never experienced a sauna before, and I want to say, bikram yoga has given me both.! I'm not going to lie. At first, it was really weird. The breathing exercises were awkward. I sweated so much, I felt like I was swimming in my own sweat. You wonder what that smell is, and then you realize... it's YOU! But after 3 weeks of doing it, I've come to really really enjoy it! I feel more balanced physically and more aware of my muscles and breathing. I even get excited when the class goes to my favorite poses! & although you sweat/smell soooo bad afterwards, I always felt "detoxed" Instructors are great and really easy/helpful for this noobie to follow. Mercury is my favorite!!! No offense to the other instructors... Some helpful yoga loka etiquette: - No talking when class starts! - Try not to put your mat directly in front of another person (people need to look at themselves in the mirror) - The room can accommodate 4 rows, so when it gets crowded, try to position your mat accordingly! - Parking lot is small, be careful when driving! Hot yoga is expensive, so after my groupon, I probably won't buy any monthly pass or anything. But for those wanting to try it out, I would highly suggest this place! 4.5 stars :) read more

Michael Kinsey, Yoga Loka's owner since August, 2017, has created a friendly, clean and supportive studio. Everyone works at their personal level. Directions are clear, with thoughtful instruction given in a way that everyone can apply to their practice, regardless of their ability. Now 70+, I've come to yoga late in life. Balance is my challenge, with various foot problems at play. Working at the back of the room, I can hold the wall bar when I need to. I am totally comfortable using this "assist". I've come to understand that everyone in class has challenges of their own, and I am not alone. Practicing at Yoka Loka, I've improved my strength, flexibility and posture. Perspiring in the heat definitely makes my skin more healthy. The peaceful atmosphere here facilitates going deep within, allowing me to have a very personal practice. I prefer the 6:00 a.m. classes, but they offer a wide variety of times with reasonable prices. I highly recommend Yoga Loka as a way to slow the aging process whatever your age. I love this studio and the people. I didn't know how great it was until I went to a few other Bikram places to test them out (they were closer to work, etc) and Yoga Loka by far, trumps them all. This is HOT yoga. You walk in and its already hot in the studio, which I personally prefer. Why go to hot yoga if you aren't sweating w/in 5 minutes? Additionally, the instruction is always by a veteran and they know how to explain the poses. The studio is small and I prefer this over some of the newer, more modern facilities. The huge facilities have no "warmth" to them like Yoga Loka. read more

Originally being one of those people that refused the entire concept of 'yoga' being a productive way to spend my little free time or 'work out' in the way I was accustomed to working out, I was immediately proven wrong on my first attempt when every muscle in my body felt like it was being worked and massaged at the same time. Personally, it is still difficult for me to take 90 minutes plus out of my day more than once or twice a week with an already crazy schedule, but most other people have a more difficult time with the heat (which I love anyway). read more

Best yoga studio ever! Love the Bikram series, and love most of the teachers here. They are very spiritual, and it comes from the heart. I LIKE that they aren't Bikram-drones. They follow the Bikram series, but not "the dialogue" - like really, what the hell does "the dialogue" mean anyway? First off, it's a monologue, and secondly, I'm not here for "the dialogue" - I'm here to connect mind, body, and spirit through the breath. Let's be free-thinkers here, and that's exactly what Yoga Loka delivers. I'd give it 5 stars, except the studio space is a little ghetto. I'm very careful to not to touch the carpet - I stay on my mat! I think they go too long between carpet cleanings. Not to mention it's probably about time to replace it! It's a little cluttered and the dressing room space is meh. But overall this place rocks, and putting up with a little funkiness is worth it, esp. for Bill or Kally's class! read more

Yoga Loka has all the charm of an old-school yoga studio that was converted from a house to a studio, before the advent of the mega-bikram studios. Here, it is VERY refreshing that you won't find any 60-day challenges, or a lot of capital investments and operating expenses that require other studios to engage in aggressive tactics to get bodies flowing through their doors. I think I've been coming here the past 3 years whenever there's a Groupon deal. It used to be $20 for unlimited sessions for a month but the last deal was $32 for a month but Groupon had a deal where you get 20% off any deals so I used it for the yoga deal. Loka yoga is a small yoga studio is pretty hidden. Its located in the alley next to this pizzeria, right pass Trader Joe off of Folsom Blvd. When you first walk it, it is quite small and worn down but I think it has character. Typically a instructor will be at the front desk, and you sign in before heading to the dressing room. Women's dressing room in just an area surrounded by curtains as and the Men's is upstairs. There's only one room for yoga which is quite spacious in comparison to the office. I think it can comfortable fit 20 yoga enthusiasts. The instructors are quite friendly and is not afraid to assist you if you're doing it incorrectly especially if it's your first time. Bring a yoga mat, long towel to cover your mat because you will sweat nonstop and sweat in places that you never knew you can sweat, lots of water, and patience. They also provide face towels for free. Some towels can be replaced and maybe a touch of fabric softener would be nice. Water and yoga mat rental are for a small fee. The yoga itself is 90 min too long. I think 60 min is sufficient. It consists of breathing exercise in the beginning & at the end, a series of poses on your feet and a series laying down. Overall, I really do enjoy the hot yoga sessions. I sweat a lot and I feel like its removing the toxins. It makes me drink more water than I would ever drink in one sitting. I feel stronger and I sleep as well. I feel like endurance is better too especially when I go to the gym. The instructors for the most part are friendly & helpful but every instructors style is different even if they are giving the same exact instructions. If I had to choose, my fav instructors are the male instructors. I feel more challenged with my sessions compared to the female instructors. Overall, I really enjoy hot yoga and the sessions they provide here and for less than $30 Groupon deal, it's total worth it considering how expensive membership is. I would consider becoming a member if the location is closer to where I live and not so darn expensive. I think is like $500/year unlimited. Beware of unethical business practices. After completing a 30 day Groupon promotion I decided to purchase a membership which entailed a monthly withdraw from my bank account of $81. I stupidly gave the owner my bank account information and the monthly withdraws began, on a month-to-month basis. After a few months I realized I was not going as much as I had intended and was wasting my money. So in August of this year I called the owner and requested a discontinuation of the withdraws as I would no longer be attending the classes. He said no problem. A couple of weeks later the $81 was withdrawn from my account. I called the owner and he said it was a mistake and that I would be refunded. Refund never happened. I called several times after that and left a message for the owner who never called me back. So I ended up going to my bank to have the withdraws cancelled which was a hassle to say the least. All because this guy wasn't decent enough to give me a refund or even return my calls, with no guarantee that he wasn't going to continue taking my money if i didn't have the bank stop the withdraws. Take away: don't be naive like me and give anyone your bank account information, even if it seems like a relatively decent person (yoga instructor). Either give a credit card or nothing at all. The actual classes were mostly okay. Some of the teachers were quite good, like Mercury, but be prepared for a very poor parking situation and very basic dressing rooms. The studio itself is adequate. Overall I don't have any major issues with the classes or the teachers, but feel obliged to let people know not to trust the owner or give him your checking account information. read more
