Yohei Sushi is one of my legit Japanese restaurants here in Hawaii. The only downside is that the tables are spaced so closely. My daughter and I called for a 12:40 reservation at about 12:00 and they were able to accommodate us! The service was on point on this day as there were only 2 other tables occupied when we arrived. Our waters and tea cups were kept full throughout our meal. As for the food, a legit teishoku meal which was beautifully presented. The piece is kinda high, but I'd say it's in line with other Japanese places. Damn, where do I begin? I come to this place twice a month mainly for their seafood tempura, which consists of crab meat, shrimp, scallops, and occasional green beans. The seafood tempura I usually order comes in a set with some traditional Japanese side dishes and cold soba noodles. I also like to order the otoro and shrimp on the side. The servers are old Japanese ladies who will often come around and refill your cha or water. They are extremely friendly and most of the time tentative when the place is not busy. It is best to call and make a reservation because the place gets real busy at certain times. This place is a must try for those who enjoy a somewhat traditional Japanese restaurant that serves fresh seafood. Enjoy! read more

I have to preface this review by saying that the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because of their nabeyaki udon. Their service is 5 stars all the way! Continuing on my search for the best nabeyaki in Honolulu, I came across Yohei Sushi on Yelp. The photos of the nabeyaki looked fantastic. The price... not so much. The last menu I saw online showed $19. That's a bit high in my book, yet I decided to give it a go. I called to make a reservation, as I had read that it gets crowded. I'm glad that I did! I was the first one there at 5pm and by the time I left, the place was almost full. I could tell that many of the customers were regulars, as the staff greeted them by name. They're located in a run-down shopping center off of Dillingham Blvd., near U Kitchen. Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. It looks sketchy on the outside, but once you walk inside it's a warm and inviting Japanese restaurant. They have a small sushi bar, as well as various sized tables. As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the friendly Japanese staff. They quickly brought out my water, green tea and menu. I placed my order fairly quickly since I already knew what I wanted. Unfortunately to my surprise, I noticed that the nabeyaki price had been raised to $23! Wow, that's the most expensive bowl of nabeyaki I've ever had. Unfortunately the nabeyaki did not live up to the price tag... not even close. The broth was just average and there weren't as many ingredients as other nabeyaki's I've had. There was no cabbage or shiitake mushroom or mochi. It was basically udon with an egg, fish cake, 1 shrimp tempura and very few small pieces of chicken. In my opinion, it was more like a $15 bowl as opposed to $23. I probably wouldn't return in the future because everything seemed overly priced, not just the nabeyaki. read more

Been to this Japanese restaurant with the family many times. The food is authentic Japanese style and the waiters are always helpful in explaining what's on the plate. I rarely have to ask them for anything so the service is great. Cozy little eating area with a Sushi Bar on the side where you can watch the chefs make each sushi with expertise. I cannot believe I only tried Yohei Sushi Restaurant recently because it's my new favorite place for lunch. I'm sure dinner is just as good but I went for lunch and LOVED everything! I tried the maguro natto don, zaru soba, ika sashimi, and some other nigiri sushi. My maguro natto don was so fresh and delicious. It was also only $18 and a very good size. Everything was so fresh and reasonably priced. Service there is also exceptional. The waitresses are sweet, attentive, and very polite. I cannot wait to go back already and I just went last week! It's a small place but the waitress said they take reservations. We did a walk in on a Monday for lunch and it was about half filled so no wait for us thankfully. I'll definitely be back! read more

Had a great dinner a few days ago. When ownership first changed a few years ago, we had a disappointing experience -- but maybe they worked out the bugs, because the last 2 times have been great. Total bill with tax was $115 -- but that included several beers and side order of chawanmushi. I was very happy with the misobutterfish (large piece, delicious) and the salmon sashimi which was very fresh (firm but buttery). Can't wait to return. read more

We came here the other week for dinner, a real dinner in the actual restaurant. It's so so much better than doing take out. Take out is so impersonal and it just doesn't showcase what this restaurant offers. From the moment we stepped in, someone came to help us. We quickly got a table and serviced. I had this Japanese restaurant called - "Yohei Sushi Restaurant" booked marked on Yelp like forever, and I was so happy that I finally got to dine here with one of my childhood friends recently. I must say, the overall dining experience at Yohei was EXCELLENT! Negitoro/ Fatty Tuna & Green Onion rolls, to share. 2. Grilled Ahi Steak 3. Maguro Nigiri Special I was the one who ordered the Grilled Ahi Steak, and I was very pleased with my selection. The Grilled Ahi Steak was cooked to perfection, and it had a nice buttery taste to it. The food portions was very generous, and my meal came with miso soup, rice, noodles, & tsukimono. A few things I recommend to you folks before coming here. - 1. Make reservations before coming here, as this restaurant is pretty small. From the outside, I thought this restaurant was pretty spacious, but when I stepped inside the restaurant, I realized how small this restaurant was. 2. My family that lives in Honolulu say that Yohei have the best butterfish on the island. I believe them after trying it here. The fish and sushi are all prepared fresh and the servers are super sweet and accommodating. All the sushi is delicious and you can tell it's good by the lack of fishiness. My girlfriend and I along with another couple went to Yohei last Saturday ...the two couples all ordered but prior to ordering we asked for separate checks ... the waitress said that was fine ..our orders came and I had the wrong order.. I questioned the waitress but since it was prior to Mother's Day I didn't want to wait another 25 minutes for the reorder .. the bill comes and it's one bill ... we then ask her she needs to separate the bill .. she goes back and finally we get the two separate checks per couple. I was not pleased that evening and gave a 15% tip... to my surprise this morning the final bill closed this morning and Yohei bumped the tip up to 20% ... I have never seen that from any restaurant...I will not go back there again. Please check your bill once it's posted ... this restaurant is DISHONEST!!! read more

I visited this place last night with my relatives that were visiting from the mainland. It was my first time trying this place out and they recommended to dine in here since they enjoyed it the last time they visited Hawaii. I checked out the menu and photos beforehand on Yelp and I wanted to try their Shokado Yohei Zen. Once we were seated, I asked the waitress about the dish I was planning to order. Unfortunately, they no longer serve this dish. Instead I ordered the Unagi Zen and two pieces of Uni Nigiri. Uni nigiri: The uni was very fresh with a hint of sweetness. It was very smooth and tasted like a savory custard. Unagi zen: This dish includes a piece of unagi in a bowl with variety of Japanese sides dishes. The unagi was good. This dish was filling and the assortment of sides dishes adds different flavors that goes well with the unagi. After the meal, this dish also includes a small bowl of eggplant ice cream. Butterfish misoyaki: I was also able to try their butterfish and it was very good. The butterfish was soft and moist. The miso sauce was sweet and very flavorful. One of the best butterfish I've tasted. Overall, a nice experience. The foods were fresh and good. It was on the pricier side but worth it for the quality of the meal. I opted for the Chirashi and my boyfriend got the Kampachi special both around $33. My friends got the sushi set and the teishoku sushi set too. Everything came pretty fast and looked good! I felt like I was back in Japan. Chirashi was good and came with a variety of fish. I especially loved the scallops! In my opinion, I would opt for a teishoku next time as I thought those had more variety. The Kona kampachi set is a steal and comes with sashimi, nigiri, and grilled kampachi with rice. Was lucky enough to get a reservation on at Saturday evening. Nice place that is packed with many tables and a sushi counter. Service was great from the start. Menus and drinks brought out immediately and drink orders taken as well. Food seems pricey, but the portions are quite big! I got the maguro natto don and it was huge! I couldn't even find the rice at first - haha! It had about 2" of just maguro and natto on the top over the rice. It also had 2 pieces of huge tamagoyaki, salad, sliced daikon, and some ogo seaweed. The tamagoyaki was so delicious and soft. Once I was able to make a dent to see the rice on the bottom, I found the rice amount was good. I definitely think it was worth the price! The teishoku that others got were huge and gave a lot of food which I also think was worth the price. Overall, good Japanese food with good portions that justify the price in my opinion. Service was superb with multiple servers checking up on you to ensure that everything is going well. Due to the rail construction, getting to the restaurant is quite difficult. Nevertheless, it's a good spot to have various Japanese teishoku, rice -don dishes and sushi. All have great flavor and is not sweetened to the local palate. I always order the chef's choice, omakase, meal. I just went here last month, but I had a craving for sushi, so I went again! Yay! I decided to try a different kind of tuna dish once in a while, so I ordered tataki(seared tuna). The tataki was served with ponzu sauce, a wonderful combination of thinly sliced daikon radish and seaweed, and was a great accompaniment to drinks! The Asahi beer was gone in no time. The tuna steak and tuna special, which I ordered separately, were also excellent. The tuna steak has a very consistent flavor, and the rice goes well with it, and the soba noodles and kinpira that come with it are satisfying enough. The Tuna Special, as the name suggests, was a menu that we could enjoy tuna in various styles. We were able to enjoy tuna prepared in the Japanese way: nigiri-zushi, maki-zushi, tuna with yam, and tuna with natto. The ankimo was also delicious, the ponzu and chopped green onions matching each other very well! I thought the food was prepared at a very high level, from the single menu items to the meals.
