This is by far my favorite Japanese restaurant. We have been going here FOREVERRRRRR, my grandma always used to love coming here and even tho she's gone now, this will always be our choice for delicious Japanese food and great service. My pick is always between the misoyaki butterfish and the maguro tempura. And sometimes I get both because I cannot make up my mind!!! The tempura is always so crispy and not super oily like how you get at some places. The portion (even the ala carte version!) is huge and I can eat A LOT but I always end up taking some of this home. Btw, this tastes awesome as leftovers if you throw it in the air fryer (Just a good tip for ya!). And the miso butterfish....my mouth is watering just thinking about it. It is melt in your mouth, perfect amount of miso, most flavorful butterfish ever. The teishoku comes with your main dish plus rice, soba, tsukemono, and a few other Japanese sides that I used to give to my grandma to eat. We used to trade. She would give me her tsukemono and I would give her some of the other sides that were not my favorite but were hers! So it always worked out perfect. Now that she's gone, I never have any extra tsukemono because no one shares with me. Sniff sniff. This place was already pretty intimate to begin with but now with COVID, they have gotten rid of tables to comply with the social distancing. Employees wear masks and you are required to fill out a form with your information (name, date, how many people in your party) just incase there is COVID case so they are able to track who was in the restaurant. Yohei has quality Japanese food. You can make a reservation by calling in, and there is always parking in their lot. My family has been coming here a lot this year and it's always been consistent. The combinations are all super good and if you like sushi, the quality of fish is super fresh! My favorite combinations here are the salmon shioyaki teishoku (the salmon portion is the biggest I've seen in Hawaii restaurants!) and I also like the maguro zuke don (also a good portion) and really good if you like ahi. The service is always great and feels like you're eating home cooked meals! My dad tends to always go overboard with his sushi ordering here and we always leave a little bit too full haha. We can't wait until the Kahala location opens! The only thing I wished they had was green tea ice cream!!! read more

I remembered eating here years ago, but never had the urge to go back. I was in the area and decided to give this place a try. I was impressed from the first time stepping in here. Nice atmosphere and the service was spot on! The waitresses there really made it feel like a true Japanese restaurant. They were very attentive and gave excellent service. The food here was very good too. The teishoku meals has a vast assortment of little dishes that comes with your meal, including a small portion of soba noodles. Not all the sets include the soba fyi. Yohei Sushi is simply just elegant great sushi restaurant with all the right elements that meet up for a great sushi. Chef Kawano san comes from Hiroshima to continue on the Obara san's legacy of the Yohei Sushi. In order the really understand the meaning of sushi, its important to understand element of: Physicality, Mentality, Spirituality section of the cuisine. Sushi is one would say its the most simple dish that someone could create. Yes its neta (fIsh) and shari (vinegar rice). Thats it! How simple is this dish, but in fact, its the quite the opposite. When it comes to an art, delicacy it comes to balancing. In France, the balance has many attribute but one of the most important thing that goes with balance is: Finesse. Finesse is not the taste of the umami sensation of enjoying the food. Rather it is how its delivered to one. Finesse is quite difficult category to satisfy because each one of us are different and have acquired different taste and taste differently based on their background and cuisine. So is one is used to eating cheese everyday vs eating kimchi everyday vs eating taco seasoning everyday, they will have acquired different tung that taste food differently. Hence sushi is a Japanese food or category, its really difficult item to approach in the U.S. to satisfy both the natives in the land also for Japanese palettes. Kawano san is an artisan because he knows the basics to mastering his craft. He understands what the locals can be adapted to like while preserving his unique method of doing traditional nigiri Japanese sushi. One of the most difficult to master are Hikarimoro based (blue fish) and Kanpyo (Traditional Gourd). He perfectly executes these difficult level dishes at an ease. The truth is the level of cooking and artisanship does not require one to have the fanciest shari, neta, and ingredients. The true art of cuisine and cooking is being able to cook at its simplest form yet have great depth understanding of relationship between: Sweet, Salty, Umami and the unknown third factor. At Yohei Sushi you can experience the balance and art created by the chef. This is easily one of my favorite sushi in the Island to dine in. read more

Yohei was one of the first places I visited when restaurants reopened because I was craving sushi and sashimi and they definitely did not disappoint. Before Covid Yohei is one of my favorite go-to places for Japanese food especially during lunch. Setting: Yohei is a cute hole in the wall at the Dillingham strip mall. It's not a very big place but it's definitely what makes this place feel homey. Parking can a bit tricky as you may have to compete with customers at businesses such as Hana Tea. There is also metered parking along the entire street so that is a good alternative if you cannot secure any spots in the strip mall. However for most of my trips in the past, if you wait a minute or two someone is bound to leave. Covid Precautions: In times of covid, safety precautions are very important when picking a place to dine in or takeout. Rest assured that Yohei is taking all the precautions and during my dine-in experience, all other guests were compliant with rules and recommendations. All seatings are separated from plexiglass even at the bar. All tables were distanced from each other and staff seat parties away from each other. The place settings encourage guests to sit diagonally across from each other. All staff is wearing masks, some are even wearing eye shields and gloves. There are alcoholic based sanitizers throughout the store and I see the staff sanitizing used tables etc. Due to Covid, condiments such as wasabi and soy sauce were prepackaged and given to you in packets with your food. Price: $$-$$$$ Prices remained pretty stable during covid. Lunch sets are always a great deal for the amount of food you get. Prices can get pricey if you're looking to order more specialized ala carte items. Nothing super unreasonable to it can add up and is a bit above average compared to other places. Some of these ala carte items are based on current day market prices so be sure to ask. Food: Sashimi lunch set + Otoro sashimi ala carte: My sashimi set came with a good selection of sashimi including hamachi, ahi tuna, and calamari, etc. It also came with limu/seaweed salad, mixed greens salad, miso soup, white rice, cabbage, and ume. The sashimi including the otoro we ordered ala carte was quite fresh and was delicious! Yohei is one of my go-to places for fresh sashimi and they did not disappoint. Unagi don lunch set: My aunt opted for the unagi don lunch set. The set came with the unagi don, cold tofu, soba, salad, seaweed salad, egg, and minced pork, and an array of small eats such as tamago and fired chicken. She says everything was delicious. P.S. I cannot get enough of their house tea! Service: Yohei still offers great service and all staff was really courteous however, I think with all the covid precautions service has been a bit slower than usual. It took longer than usual to get our food ordered and to receive our food during this visit. When we wanted to add to our order we had to wait ~ 10 minutes to do so as all the staff were either busy assisting other customers or were cleaning/sanitizing used tables. I think that despite it taking longer, the delays were reasonable if they ensure the safety of its customers. If you choose to dine-in, please factor in extra time just in case. Overall: I would recommend checking out Yohei for your next Japanese/sushi craving. Be sure to check out their lunch menus and their teishoku setssas they are delicious and are priced very reasonably. read more

Nice quaint restaurant in an older section of town. Seems like a local favorite as it was quite busy on a weekday. There were actually 3 parties celebrating birthdays when we dined. Everyone sang Happy Birthday. We had the Chirashi Sushi Bowl and Salmon Special, which were both delicious. Service was good even with the crowd. We enjoyed a nice dinner. read more

Just ordered from them via uber. The salmon sashimi that was part of the bento tasted spoiled and left a rancid fishy flavor in my mouth. Beyond that the grilled salmon was pretty tasty though. The miso cod was delicious and two decent sized pieces. The tempera, sushi, and chawanmushi were all delicious! The only thing disappointing was their soba. The texture and taste was sub standard. Made reservations for 5pm on superbowl Sunday about a week in advance. Tried to eat there for lunch previously but didn't have reservations and it was gonna be like 45 min wait. Parking normally sucks here but because it was Sunday there was plenty of space. There was only one other person dining in there when we arrived. Service was fast and friendly. My family all ordered sets with tempura. Mine specifically was the ahi and shrimp set. Everything was good and I love the small dishes that are part of the set (favorites were the soba and tsukemono). They did forget 2 tempura sauces but brought it out right away when we alerted them to it. It's comforting, old school kinda food. My parents enjoy this place so I know we'll be back. read more

I came here for lunch with family on a Friday. The restaurant was very clean and the tables were nicely spaced out. I decided on the Maguro Nigiri Sushi special ($36) which includes 3-piece chutoro, 3-piece akami, 3-piece aburi, negitoro takuan maki, yamakake, maguro natto, and miso soup. The fish was fresh and everything tasted delicious! It was a lot of food and I ended up taking leftovers home. I will definitely dine here again. Decided to stop by somewhere close to home. Although, there was a lot of free parking available, the restaurant was a packed house. The sushi bar was also full. The menu has different sets of Teishoku which makes it easy to order with lots of pictures. All the good came out pretty fast served on trays for each individual. The food quality was excellent which surpised me with the price not being to steep. They have a good system in their service. The Teishoku sets seemed pre-made so when served, there's less waiting time to recieve your food. I really found a liking to this place for a quick dine in and out restaurant serving good quality food. The server's was very helpful to customers and helping each other out on there tables. Sushi is above average, prices are OK ,but portions are small. We came here on a Friday night with reservations and the restaurant was pretty packed! I got the unagi (eel) osaka sushi and the chirashi bowl, my wife got a the tempura set meal. The Osaka sushi was good - the unagi was charred wonderfully (although it was cold), and the rice was chewy, well seasoned with some eel sauce in it. However, it was super expensive for not that big of a portion. There were maybe 9 pieces and it was 19 dollars. The chirashi bowl was OK too, it was actually really small portion of sashimi, and an OK portion of rice. It came with a bowl of miso soup. The tempura set was actually the better option of the two, with lots of pleniful crispy tempura, a bowl of rice, a small bowl of soba noodles, then two types of pickles, seaweed and a house made tempura dip. Overall, I think that this restaurant is OK, although the portions are super small. read more

We love going to this place for great quality sushi and sashimi. This restaurant is small so be sure to make a reservation because they do get busy on weekends-- I know from experience, being turned down as a walk in. There is free parking however sometimes the lot can get full during lunch time, but there is ample street parking available. Their menus are stacked with either meals that come with a variety of sides or you can get items ala carte. We usually get a variety of nigiri as an appetizer and a meal (the ahi/veg tempura and miso butterfish are the ones that we always stick to and they never disappoint). Their meals are very filling with all of the sides they give you. It's also not the generic sides that other restaurants give you, but good quality, authentic Japanese side dishes. read more

This was my first visit. A good friend invited me to lunch and from the outside entrance it did not look especially what I expected inside. The restaurant opens at 11 am so we arrived about 15-20 minutes early. Once the doors were opened it was like being transported to Japan and being taken to someone's home. The decor and ambiance was so authentic. The waitresses were like so enthusiastic to serve you. The table setting were complete with chopsticks on a napkin and sealed hand towels to the side to prepare you for a special meal. I was most impressed with a beautiful and exciting menu. So creative and artistically appealing as the meals themselves. I don't think there is a single meal not worth trying. Everything is FRESH! I loved the tea cups and plating to the wasabi flavors. You will have to decide your own meal because the selection and choices are too many. But know whatever you do decide on, you won't be disappointed. Slowly and steadily more customers arrived. My grandmother loved coming to Yohei and walking into the restaurant I could immediately see why. All the staff are very attentive and cordial, speaking both Japanese and English. Upon being seated, you're offered ocha and ice water. It feels very authentic, like you stepped into a traditional Japanese home or restaurant. They have daily specials but we usually order off the menu. If you don't like seafood, the one dish you need to order is the Oyako don. Most of their food is seafood (fish, sushi, and sashimi type dishes). Their tempura is also very good here too! If you enjoy sushi, Sashimi, and tempura Yohei is definitely a place to eat. Beer is also served here. Parking lot is shared with other establishments but is okay for dinner time as some of the other businesses are closed already. read more

The salmon, ahi, scallops, hamachi and tobiko were all fresh! The prawn (with the big eyes) was my favorite...sweet and succulent! My friend ordered the combination Shrimp ahi tempura Combo. Her meal was so big that she gave me two pieces of the ahi tempura...yum! Would I go back again? Sure! Service was pleasant and efficient! My first time here. My friend said it is a great place for a date night. So many items to chose from. I ordered my favorite Miso butterfish. My dinner came with a nice size fillet perfectly cooked.
