a plate of rice, meat, and vegetables

Gave them another shot today with some chicken katsu. Meh. The chicken was tasteless, the brown rice was undercooked and the steamed veggies tasted way over salted. I probably won't be back here unfortunately. The prices are good, but still. For $10, my tastebuds should be a little more satisfied then they were. What was weird was last time the service was the reason for my 3 star review. This time it's the food. Can they ever hit both? Is third time really a charm? Maybe, but there are so many delicious eateries off Vista, I would be wasting my time at this point.

(Meridian location) Can't believe it took me a year to find this place. It's authentic Japanese food that's reasonably priced. Tried Chicken Katsu and Short Ribs with white rice and veggies. LOVED the short ribs-marinated just right and the meat tender. I know I will be frequenting this place regularly to try various dishes. They also have a location on Vista Ave in Boise, but reviews I read preferred the Meridian one-has indoor and outdoor seating areas). Sharing lots of photos to answer most of your questions.

Lunch time plus the BEST boba in Boise!

Some of the best teriyaki and katsu around... that should be enough for a great review. However, there is definitely more. Their boba is not only the best that I have found in Boise... they have an extensive (like crazy packed) list of flavors. My go to is pineapple, but have tried the green tea, lavendar, bahama mama and quite a few others too. All are great. Recently, they added yogurt boba too. They are basically flavor bursts popping bobas. They'll let you yrt them if you haven't had them, so be sure to ask.

The smaller the place the better the food. This place is just that. I've door dashed it thrice now. Well worth it.

Never a disappointment with this place. The prices are a little spendy due to the fact the plates aren't that big, but the food is amazing!

If we had never eaten here before, today's experience would have been one and done…read more After spending Spring Break camping at Three Island Crossing and Bruneau Dunes State Park, we stopped at Shiok on our way home to Boise for a late lunch. The vibe from the waitress told us she didn't want to be there. We were barely greeted and shown a table to sit down at. We barely had seen the menu when she came by and asked us about drinks and appetizers. We asked for two glasses of ice tea and said we needed more time to look at the menu. When she came back to take our order, we still hadn't received our ice teas. She even brought us our cups of soup before the teas. Since we weren't provided water when we sat down, we waited 15 minutes to get the teas. My wife ordered a sweet and sour chicken dish and I ordered Kung pan chicken. When they arrived, they looked almost identical: deep-fried chicken in a sweet sauce. Only Kristy's dish had some slices of bell pepper, while mine had a piece of raw broccoli and some dried chiles. Tasting mine, it was definitely sweet and sour. When the waitress came around I asked if that dish was really Kung pao chicken and she assured me it was. I said the sauce was sweet and the chicken was deep-fried and was unlike any Kung pan chicken I'd ever had. She told me she would trade it out, although I was unsure what she was going to replace it with, since she had insisted that what I had received truly was Kung pao chicken. She returned a few minutes later and said the chef had made a mistake and was making the correct dish for me. It came out and was fine. But what bothered me is the server just assumed she had brought me the proper dish to begin with. If she had simply looked at it and agreed it looked nearly identical to Kristy's sweet and sour dish, she would have easily concluded a mistake had been made. Which I would have understood. Instead, she didn't believe my explanation of why it was the wrong dish. If I was the chef in the kitchen, I would have brought the corrected dish out to the customer myself and apologized personally. He took the easy way out by putting it on his waitress. This is a restaurant we love and have spoken to the owner before. We will go there again, but this was a very disappointing experience.

Days later, the city condemned the entire building, saying that a seemingly never-ending project by the building's owner to replace a basement floor had rendered the building unsafe. What had been expected to be a two-month closure has lingered for nearly two years as the building owner and the city have fought in court to get the building made safe again. As a result, Mai Thai, which had operated in the Union Block for 20 years has been largely homeless for nearly two years. They reopened at the kitchen of the defunct Crave delivery service in Meridian, a ghost kitchen concept, offering takeout and delivery far from the restaurant's Boise base. In early August, Mai Thai opened at a Boise ghost kitchen, only it's owner Billy Pothikamjorn and his staff running the place, not contacted workers with no ties to the actual restaurant. Mai Thai was located close to our home in Boise's West End and its new location is even closer. It's located in the West End Food Co. on Main Street. We ordered Hat Yai fried chicken, street food from Thailand topped with crispy shallots and served with yellow curry, roti and ginger rice. I had drunken noodles and Kristy and I shared an order of paratha a type of roti bread) with Japanese pumpkin green curry. Everything was excellent. Pothikamjorn took my order and prepared the food, so I knew it was going to have the same quality as when they were in their downtown location. Service is mostly restricted to takeout and free delivery if you live within a six-mile radius. There's a few tables outside, but it's on the sunny side of the street and during the hot summer likely isn't too inviting. I'm glad to see Billy and his crew back in Boise. They were among the restaurants that sustained us during Covid with their home delivery so we're happy they've persevered despite the troubles at their former location.

Located in the quiet shops off Entertainment, CK Hawaiian BBQ touts they have the best Hawaiian food in Boise. I think there is potential but they need an entire makeover, from the space to the recipes. For one, the restaurant was not clean. The tables were grimy and the floor was oddly sticky. It felt like the place hadn't been properly cleaned in a long time. I ordered the Kalua Park Plate (savory pork with (or without) cabbage) with a side of macaroni and gravy ($8.45 for small), my husband the Chicken Katso also with a side of macaroni and gravy (panko breaded chicken breast, $9.55). We decided to take our food home. The second I opened the boxes, I was unimpressed. I'll spare you my very descriptive and unappetizing statement (something about the remarkable resemblance to wet cat food), but to be blunt, I was appalled. It was soggy mess of a few pieces of pork with way to much cabbage. I took one small bite and couldn't stomach anymore. Even my husband exclaimed "what the actual f***." The rest of the food wasn't the worst. The chicken katsu was breaded good but I was like where tf is the katsu sauce?! It wasn't anything special at all. At least it was edible. The macaroni salad was okay. It didn't taste very fresh, probably an old batch. I'm no Hawaiian food expert and based off their menu I got the impression that they're not aimed at providing traditional Hawaiian fare, but more so "inspired" fare. However, regardless of the origin of the food the fact remained that what I received tonight was terrible. Two stars, because the employees were very nice. And were very accommodating when we changed from dine-in to take-out.
