Recently reopened restaurant in downtown Skokie. I got their Mole Enchiladas and Pechuga Moctezuma, which are both phenomenal. The mole was delicious, full of spice, and it was the perfect pair for chicken enchiladas. The pechuga was creamy and cheesy. The chicken was flavourful and juicy, and incorporating the sauce all together was just a flavor bomb. I really enjoyed both dishes and will be back to try the other dishes as well! Note that it's cash only, but you can use Zelle. It's also a BYOB, so bring your favorite drink and enjoy, cause I sure did. Rookie error #1: Yolo at this place does not stand for "you only live once". Rather, it's short for "yolotl", which in a certain native dialect means heart. We finally got to try this little place as it's hard to get in on a Saturday with hours of only 5 - 10pm. They only have seating for 30 and you should go with a reservation. I'd go with about 4.5 stars. We tried: - Fried whole Pampano fish - Chile rellenos (one stuffed with chicken, one with cheese) - Carne asada All of the dishes were delicious, freshly prepared with tasty sauces, and nicely presented. There was only a small serving of rice with each dish. The refried beans serving size was ok. Overall, great taste, but a little pricey for the serving size. The dining room is vibrant and upbeat, and it's a nice date night sort of place. It's also BYOB with a $2 corkage fee. Almost every table had wine, except us with beer. After much indecision about where my parents wanted to go for their 32nd anniversary dinner, my dad finally made the executive call to go eat "Mexican". I quickly Yelped around, and found Yolo. To everyone's surprise, we had never heard of this place, and it was less than 5 miles away. I was relieved to see that it looked classy in the pictures, and not a hole-in-the-wall taco joint (no disrespect, but we're celebrating 32 years of marriage here!). I called and made a reservation for 3 at 7:30pm. Although the lady's tone indicated that it wasn't very busy for a Thursday evening, there was only one table open (ours) when we walked in. (Note: street parking is limited, but there is a free parking lot 1/2 a block south towards Oakton.) The restaurant is small - about 6-8 tables and 2 booths. It was dimly lit, and as the pictures told me, classy. We brought a few bottles of beer (BYOB - $2 corkage fee/wine bottle/6-pack of beer/mixed drink), and ate the free bottomless chips and salsa while we perused the menu. The chips were really sturdy and crunchy, and the salsa was tasty with a little spiciness (a little on the liquidy side than I prefer). Ceviche de Camaron was our appetizer choice. This was superb. I really don't even like shrimp, but I liked it diced up with the freshness of the mango and pineapple. It was really really good, and both of my parents also really liked it. For our entrees: My dad ordered the Lomo De Puerco Poblano (pork tenderloin in a pumpkin seed sauce mixed with poblano pepper, corn and sour cream served with mixed vegetables and sweet potato puree). This was delicious. The tenderloin had a crispy exterior, and the pumpkin seed sauce was a perfect accompaniment. I'm also not a fan of mashed sweet potatoes, but the puree was seasoned perfectly. My mom ordered the Salmon al Ajonjoli (salmon filet topped with a sesame seed sauce served with rice and vegetables). She originally wanted the Camarones Ixtapa, but they were all out of shrimp after making our ceviche (note: shrimp dishes seem to be popular; must try the shrimp next time). We were a little wary of ordering fish, but it was devine. The salmon was pan fried to perfection, and the sesame seed sauce had an orange flavor that really elevated the flavors. I ordered the Mole Negro Yolotl (chicken breast (bone-in) in our own delicious 32 ingredient Black Mole sauce served with rice and beans). I am always hesitant to order mole, it's really hit or miss with me. Our server offered me a tasting, and I was convinced that I needed to get this dish. The mole wasn't overbearing, and the chocolate taste did not come through too strongly. The chicken meat fell off the bone, I didn't even have to use my knife to shred pieces off. The rice and beans were also really good. I wanted to order the flan for dessert, but they had ran out! (Awwwwwww, but note to self, the flan is good enough to sell out!). They had mango cheesecake left, but that sounded a little too rich for our tastes and bulging waistlines. All in all, we spent less than $80 for the meal. For 3 people, the spectacular service (our server lady was so nice!), the BYOB bargain, and amazing food - we were extremely happy! My mom kept talking about how she had to go back. So my cousin called me this one day to rave over a Mexican restaurant in his hood. "In Skokie?" Not another one I thought. He previously shared about another nearby tapas place that he loved and I didn't care much for. His sister then got on the horn and continued.. "It's Michelin rated, believe that". Upon this news and since we needed a venue for a "cousins" dinner, reservations were made for the following evening. Six relations met the following evening over California vino and shared plates. Since my cousin had already dined here the night before, we had an idea of greats and just okays. Unfortunately a few dishes were already sold out but we made the best of it. We tasted dishes with pepper sauces, moles and purees. Every last entree was tasty and enjoyed. We sat so long that we were the last of two tables left, keeping them open later than usual. At the end, we all sat with smiles hoping they might share the dessert menu with us and so they did. Actually our waiter said " you can't leave without dessert and here's what's available". Ummmm, Yes! Yolo proves you don't have to go to the city and wait in a long line for one of Rick Bayless' places. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but, here tucked in Skokie, a little side street and Wow. Probably 7-8 tables top, it's BYOB and a nice wide ranging menu. We had five people, we all basically shared dishes and appetizers, from their Mole's, the Chorizo Corncakes, all our dishes were really good. We have been coming to Yolo since they opened and have never had a bad meal. Service is always top notch and then some. The food is slightly a different yet authentic take on Mexican and although we have a few favorites we usually go to, everything we have had has been delicious. My wife always orders one of the steak dinners but I like to dabble. Tonight I had the chef's, kinda new, red mole sauce on chili relenos, one cheese and one chicken. Holy guacamole was it fantastic. I cannot believe I've never seen this quaint restaurant before! It's very small - I think it had only about 6 small tables. The prices are decent and it has a cozy, ethnic atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. I tried the Sea Tacos as an appetizer - I've only had fish tacos once before so I don't have much of a reference to compare it to, but I did enjoy them. I must say, the Carne asada Azteca was absolutely delicious. A great place to bring a date, but I'd find another restaurant to bring a large family. read more

So I don't really eat Mexican food often unless drunk, so whatever "authentic" is supposed to be, idgaf. I had a nice time here though. I called to see if they were busy and put my name in for like 45 min later, showed up early accidentally (there is ample street parking on the weekend, surprisingly. Another reason to love the 'burbs) and waited 5 minutes for them to clear a table for us. The food tasted good - nice and homey. I really enjoyed the salsa with the chips, really smooth but had a nice kick. We tried to munch slowly because eating too much chips is a huge pitfall every single time I'm served these.... but sea tacos came after 1.5 bowls of chips :/ But they were very good. Wouldn't mind coming here to make it a taco night - though it might be expensive - $9 for 3 tacos, and they are not too filling. The mole negro is... WOW. Like, really rich and bitter and complex and has a spicy after kick somehow. I don't know if I can taste all 32 ingredients, and I'm not even sure if I like the bitterness, but I sure do appreciate the depth. Would try something else if I came again though. So you see this place and say, "it's cute." You order your meal and you say, " this place is frickin' awesome!" Here in Skokie is a true gem! The food will bring you in, and you will be glad you came. Sure there are a few hurdles, like a BYOB policy (no biggie some I bring awesome wine), and a cash only thing (which is cool since When you take booze off the tab you can actually pay cash! We all came for the bone-in chicken breast served with a 32-ingredient mole sauce. Sauce is quite good and I thought it could have been slightly spicier. The disappointing part was the chicken was clearly cooked separately and had the sauce poured on it. It didn't have any mole flavors infused into it. Usual side of rice and refried beans. Wow. I grew up in Skokie and there was nothing like this when I was around. This is not your standard Tex-Mexish crap you usually find in the US. This is authentic Mexican food. There is only 1 waitress which is more than enough because there are only 8 (!) tables in this tiny restaurant. Because it's so small, you must have reservations on Friday or Saturday night. The chicken (bone-in) was cooked to perfection. And they do it in their tiny kitchen which is about the size of my master bathrooom. The mole is amazing. In fact, it's so good that they will sell it to you in 2 sizes to bring home (I highly recommend this). The prices are extremely reasonable (nothing over $20) which is a huge plus for the quality of food and the classy ambience. However, it is BYOB so bring your own margaritas or Dos Equis. Beware Rick Bayless (of Frontera Grill/Topolobampo fame). You need to make room for Yolo at the top of the Chicagoland Mexican food chain. read more

This small family run operation is good but not great. They have trouble having what you want in stock so don;t have your heart set on your first choice of a dish as they may not have it. The salsa is really different - a bright orange sauce with good flavor however it is very, very thin and can seem strange at first. The spicy shrimp were amazing - great flavor, with just enough heat and about 8 shrimp on the dish. Chili rellenos with a substitution of steak were off - they added no cheese so the dish did not come together at all. One of your table companions ordered two different items that they did not have and her meal came out much later than every one else's - they waited way too long to tell her - really unacceptable. read more

In today's day and age, not accepting credit cards is majorly inconvenient. The place is nice and small. The selection is decent and all items are $10 or above. Average meal is about $17. Food took about 45 mins to be prepared, but tasted great. Overall, for the price per plate, it doesn't make sense to run a cash-only restaurant. One chicken meal and one steak meal with two ice waters will set you back $50 with tax and tip. You be the judge. read more

Cute, very tiny, family owned byob Mexican restaurant. One waiter, Billy, worked the room. He was very friendly and amusing. Went with my hubby and a friend. We all had dishes with mole involved. All were good. They also had an appetizer special of flautas that were quite good. It's a place to go for a relaxed casual dinner, not if you are in a hurry. Yolo.... great restaurant, and not a place you try because of YOLO. Yolo is short for yolotli which is Nahuatl (Aztec language) for heart. So enjoy your random fact of the day as I will tell you why this place is leaps and bounds above your normal Mexican joint. For started they do a mole negro. This is one of the most difficult dishes to make in Mexican cuisine. This places uses over 30 ingredients. And then they only like in the 20's to have this over chicken. Keep in mind that this is a bargain over Topolobambo (where their version with a 28-day ages rib-eye will set you back a cool 49, but this is not a fair comparison as anyone that had Rick Bayless' food can attest to). I'm just trying to point out how amazing it is that this small place in Skokie is making food that I would say is fair to compare with some of Chicago's best Mexican eateries. We also got some pork roast with a green sauce and peppers. After going into so much detail about the mole, I really do not know what to say here. But trust me, I was extremely happy with this order. It was a large piece of pork, perfectly cooked and spiced. For desserts we went for a piece of flan and a horchata. The Flan, holy shit, I didn't think flan was capable of being so amazing. Its texture was a little thicker than other flans I've tasted. Then there was cinnamon chocolate drizzle on the plate that added an entire new element to a traditional dessert. In particular, they boast 32 ingredients in the mole, and the depth of flavor in it lived up to my expectations. The chicken underneath the mole was tender and moist. The slice of flan we shared at the end of the meal was a perfect way to sooth the spiciness of the meal. I was impressed by how reasonable the portion sizes were: imagine a 10" dinner plate, 1/4 of the area is given to carbs (1/2 cup of rice in this case), 1/3 to the side (beans or vegetables), and the remaining portion to the main course (meat or vegetables). I know. There are amazing reviews. I thought it was pretty awful. We went last year on a Wednesday evening when Skokie was having a 20% off night. My husband ordered the Chile Rellenos and I ordered the Filete Tajin. The filete was seriously one of the worst pieces of meat I've ever had in my life. It looked (and tasted) like someone had drawn grill lines on it and then boiled it. Or maybe it was just thrown under the broiler and steamed instead of broiled. It was inedible, plus had a HUGE vein of fat. Had the preparation been ok, I could have dealt with the fat but between the two, I think I had maybe 3 bites. The sides are just bland - carrots and Spanish rice - nothing exciting, no real flavor. The ONLY tasty thing was the salsa, which is, admittedly, great. On top of that the waiters were...strange... They both seemed like they were 14 years old and the girl (really girl, not woman) was wearing a one piece romper and her butt was literally hanging out. So maybe that works for you - probably does (it was at least a nice butt), but there's something really unappetizing about it and quite frankly entirely inappropriate. I want to go back. I do. Even with the prior reviews for this place I was quite skeptical as Skokie is not known for great ethnic food. However, this place is probably one of the only authentic Mexican restaurants in the Chicagoland area. Just a note though- they do not have burritos or tacos- this is real Mexican not tex-mex which you find and most places. The waitress/hostess/server was very nice and accommodating. I had called in and asked if they had dishes that did not contain onions as I once went with my family and my father is allergic to onions. On the phone they said they could make anything without onions. Of course when we got there we learned there was only one dish... a chicken salad that had no onions and we nearly walked out for that reason. They were kind enough to bring him a free cheese chili roleno and the chicken salad was actually very good. For appetizers I would recommend the Tostadas Oaxaquenas which were very flavorful and topped with beans, shredded beef Mexican sausage and cheese. The tostadas de ceviche de pescado (plain soft tortillas filled with fish and topped with mole and Tacos mulin chaai (warm soft tortillas filled with chicken and topped with mole) were both good. The civiche de camaron (shrimp civiche) was good but not great. The real star of the menu is the Enchiladas de platano (plantain filled enchiladas topped with black mole) which is slightly sweet and slightly spicy. Some of my friends enjoyed the Pampano Rio verde (a whole cooked fish with cilantro sauce), the Mignon Meztli (filet minon in a mushroom cream sauce) and the lomo de puerco poblano (pork loin in a poblano sauce. I had the carne asada. It came overdone the 1st time but was quickly and apologetically replaced with one done to perfection. (I would recommend ordering it medium rare). The carne asada was good but I expected more flavor. The apple crepes in brandy sauce were very good , but the flan was pretty standard. However, the excellent service and atmosphere deserves a 6th star. The waitress/hostess is extremely sweet and attentive. The "upscale" restaurants in Chicago could learn a few things from her as she makes the dining experience memorable and goes out of her way to make sure all of the customers are happy. If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night I would highly advise you to make a reservation as there are 9 tables which are quickly filled. In summary: 1. Make a reservation 2. We have been searching for a fresh and authentic Mexican spot since relocating from Southern California about a year and a half ago. We were skeptical about this place, but took a chance and I'm SO GLAD we did!! The food was fresh, delicious, interesting, and authentic. I brought my husband, toddler, and my Au Pair (who is FROM MEXICO!!), and we all loved it. We were all impressed by Yolo. The interior is elegant with subtle classical touches of Mexican art, without any sombreros and neon colors. I love Mexican food but have to admit in the Chicago area, a good, decently priced mexican restaurant that has GREAT food is hard to find. YOLO is decently priced and the food is AMAZING!!! I love it!! Not to mention, the Horchata. Best Horchata I have ever had. Will go back again for sure. The waitress was extremely nice, constantly checking on us, and making sure we always had enough chips and salsa on the table. Oh, this is a little Skokie secret that you will totally enjoy. A friend told us about this place, 'cause we were trying to get into our fave Wholly Frijoles and the wait was always so long. This is Mexican, but Yucutan peninsula Mexican! Different than you're used to if all you think of is tacos, tamales and burritos. We did start with open-faced tacos as appetizers for the table... good, but nothing to write home about. We quickly ramped things up to include a whole Pampano fish (which is apparently a fish from around the peninsula), that was beautifully served, de-boned and wonderful! A party in the mouth. Also the chicken mole had a mole sauce with spice and chocolate tones.... fabulous. A carne asada (a safe choice) proved to be good, but typical. All of this served on white linen table clothes with excellent wait-service, in a family-owned restaurant that genuinely seemed grateful to have the customers, rather than trying to rush you out the door. My wife and I found ourselves with a rare night off. We had a sitter at home with the kids and a few hours to spare. So we decided to meet in Skokie for some tacos. We excitedly drove up to El Fuego, succumbing to that special tractor beam called Al Pastor. Lo and behold, El Fuego was closed. Once you fix your mind on tacos, it's pretty difficult to talk yourself into anything else. We held hands, wandered around the corner, and happily discovered Yolo. Yolo is an upscale Mexican eatery - so no taco entrees on the menu. You also won't find other pedestrian fare like burritos, fajitas, gorditas - not a Doritos Loco Taco to be found! The menu did satisfy our Taco craving, though, by delivering amazing Mexican flavors. My wife had plantain enchiladas covered in a chocolate-infused mole sauce. I had shrimp in a red pepper sauce on a bed of rice and peppers. I could have stood for the food to be a tad more spicy - both of our dishes were on the mild side. But the flavors rocked. Went there for my anniversary. Looked like a cute place to celebrate. The food was ok. The sauce over my food wasn't what I expected, but it could just be the style of food from their part of Mexico. The service was lacking and inside was cold. The staff's attention was mainly at the party of 8 next to our table. Went here on a Friday night and atmosphere had an "older" crowd. We were the youngest ones there (not that there's something wrong with that, just not what I expected). Place is very tiny, service was slow and food wasn't memorable. I've been to lots of Mexican restaurants therefore I can only rate it 3 stars. Likes: BYOB read more
