I don't know who Guzman or Gomez are, but I'd like to offer them my thanks for the fast, relatively cheap, vegan-friendly Mexican options. My first thought was, "This is like Chipotle, if Chipotle was actually good," and I'm sticking with that. Perhaps that can be the new slogan for Guzman y Gomez. Run with it, put it on your bags and cups, just make sure to pay me back in free burritos. It's not exactly the same model as Chipotle. You don't watch the magic happen, so there's no opportunity to request a little more of this or a bit less of that. But the staff here are so eager to please, I always find I get exactly what I was looking for anyway. If you need a little more of anything, just ask, and they're happy to oblige. Plus, this place has so many more options than Chipotle, it's crazy. Better food, better atmosphere, just better overall. During my first visit, I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the chefs, Dustin, and I could hear the passion for cooking in how he spoke about this role here. He broke down all their vegan options for me and made sure my first burrito was an absolute hit. It's probably that first visit that got me hooked, so G y G is lucky to have a guy like him. Two vegan mayos, chipotle or herb, both delicious. Pulled shiitake mushroom, seasoned beautifully and cooked to order. Perfectly cooked rice, yummy fajita veggies, salsa options galore, it was all spot on. Super authentic Mexican? No, but that's ok. "Inspired by authentic Mexican food" is fine by me. And how'd they manage to get so many friendly employees? I've been here a half a dozen times, and everyone is so damn chipper and happy to help. Plus, the music is upbeat and fun, not some dreary corporate playlist. I actually *want* to eat in, which I rarely look forward to in a fast food spot. I'm loving it. There are times when you just need something satisfying and fast that doesn't break the bank. This place brings that energy via fresh ingredients prepared with expertise. Plus, as I said, Chipotle is garbage. I'm glad Guzman y Gomez decided to pop up in Evanston. read more

One of those burritos-and-bowls Mexican-ish chain places that are popular at the moment. Smaller portions than Chipotle, but also a lower price. They charge extra for sour cream, but have three salsas in dispensers out by the drinks dispenser, along with onions, cilantro, and sliced jalapenos, and they give you a few tortilla chips with your bowl. Overall, not a bad deal. The chicken was well-cooked. The green salsa was a tad spicier than I'm used to, and the chipotle salsa was a little milder than I expected. Bathroom was clean. On a Thursday evening, the place was fairly crowded, but seating was still available. I'd go again. read more

Grabbed carryout here when visiting family in the area and it was pretty good! I opted for the rice bowl with flank steak as my protein. It was quite a generous portion for the price point and filled with black beans, pico de gallo, cheese, shredded lettuce, tomatillo, and served with a side of chips. I also added some guac and chose the chips and queso for my side. The bowl was quite tasty and I didn't finish it all since it was so big. The outlier was the chips and queso. Something was really off about the chips that came with them. They weren't stale exactly but something tasted like the oil had gone bad? But it was weird because the chips that came with my bowl tasted great and were just fine. The bummer was that that portion wasn't enough to really enjoy much of the queso with so a lot of that ended up going to waste. The queso was really good, though! So that was disappointing. Maybe we just got an off batch? Unclear. If we had dined in I probably could have asked them to swap them out but since it was carryout there wasn't much we could do. That said the rest of the meal was really good and super affordable, especially for a college town, so I would definitely not count them out over the chips! read more

I have now been here four times and while there are some parts that should give it lower stars, I cannot deny that the quality of the food from here, especially as a fast food place. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into with this place. We already have a Chipotle, Taco Bell, Dos Brothers, and Big Wig Taco within two blocks of this place. Do we really need ANOTHER taco place? I would argue YES since this is the best food out of all of them. For a fast food taco place, it has a good sized menu. Its not the novel of a Taco Bell or the four options of a Chipotle, but a good mid level. I also like that they have two sizes of things which is helpful for those who want something like a burrito, but doesn't want to pass out. My new obsession is their $2.50 tacos which many would call "white people tacos". No shame there! This place has the best hard shells in town. Nice and crispy! $2.50 isn't bad for what you get, but I will explain below. I have gotten a burrito from here as well that was pretty awesome. The most underrated part is they serve Breakfast. I did that once and I think its the best of all times to go there. They also have a salsa bar with three banging sauces that I like to combine. I will give extra points to the spice level which my dad, who hate spicy food, can do! I kept it at 5, but I will say that this place is a bit on the expensive side. They do charge more than most, but so far, all their food has been awesome. They are also slightly disorganized, but I think that has more to do with it being new and fast food. Once the food comes, its all good! Lastly, the only other criticism I have is with their rewards which isn't as generous as Chipotle or Taco Bell. Thats more of a corporate problem than what they could do in Evanston. Either way, this is the place you want to visit for some fast food tacos and burritos. Everything is fresh and tasty. I've never worked for a more unorganized and disrespectful restaurant in my life. This place knew for MONTHS they were going bankrupt and still continued to overwork everybody, understaff us, stress us out, and waste our time instead of being honest with their employees. We all worked hard through busy nights like Cinco de Mayo, picked up extra shifts, dealt with the chaos, and stayed loyal just to get fired all in one day with no warning, no notice, no appreciation... nothing. All the corporate people came in smiling in our faces, acting like everything was fine while knowing what was really going on behind the scenes. Meanwhile employees were the ones dealing with the stress, confusion, and constant disorganization every single shift. People rearranged their schedules, missed time with family, and depended on these jobs just to be tossed aside in one conversation. What makes it even worse is how many people they constantly hired just to turn around and fire them days, weeks, or months later. Some people left other jobs for this place thinking they had stability, just to get completely blindsided. I honestly feel bad for everybody affected because for a lot of people, this was their only source of income. It also always felt like they only wanted Hispanic workers there so the restaurant could look more "authentic" for the image they were trying to sell, which honestly makes this whole situation feel even worse now. Then they send out fake "if you need anything contact us" messages like they actually cared about the people who kept that place running. And the fact this fake "Australian-Mexican" restaurant couldn't even show basic respect to its workers on the way out says everything. Went in on Saturday. A mistake was made. They replaced the Cali burrito (gave me a free sandwich card) but I was too scared to eat it and decided to wait to see if I would get sick. Chicken instead of veggie. I decided to have it for lunch today Monday. I heat it up and it is steak. I tried calling multiple times and ended up taking up my lunch by driving there. They then replaced the replacement cali burrito (mushroom) gave me a free drink. I get to the job and it's a regular veggie burrito (mushroom). I tried calling and again could not get an answer (vm not set up). At this point I give up. Three attempts to get one Cali Burrito (mushroom) and I still don't know what it taste like. I ordered in advance but had a few issues with my order. I tried to talk to employees about what was missing (two drinks) , but the order receipt they had left out a few things I had ordered. I'm not sure if they were just out of it or what. The price I paid online was also different than what I paid online (presumably because I didn't get everything I ordered) but I didn't ever get a refund. Prices are about a buck or two less than chipotle for a burrito but the chicken was scarce and had Funny Bits and somehow I overlooked that they put lettuce inside..warm lettuce, ugh.
