This is a japanese restaurant with trendy instagrammable dishes. However the quality and taste are not on par with authentic places. We tried their mashed potato curry udon. The curry was not very flavorful. It felt so bland and with the mash potato, even more bland. The shrimp toast seemd big when it arrived but inside is a very thin layer of shrimp. It was fried nicely. The okonomiyaki was the most disappointing. It was so tiny. It didn't have enough stuffing inside. You can make a better one yourself at home. Service was super quick even though it was a busy night with a line out the door. We tried out the miso chashu carbonara, Hamburg and Black tonkotsu ramen for the dine out menu. The food was okay and it was not by any means an authentic Japanese dining experience. It felt like the food was all prepared in advanced because of the high volume of guests which lead to some items being over cooked or portions not being consistent from table to table. We did enjoy that there was a good variety of sides and the mochi ice cream balls for dessert were a delight. We came here for dinner on a Friday night. I like coming here because they have an extensive menu. We really enjoyed their shrimp toast. They have a great selection of drinks as well. I came across this place because I was searching for the flying ramen!! It is honestly a highlight of this place, but unfortunately, I did not end up getting it :( they only have takayoki flying ramen and I don't eat seafood.. so wasn't able to try it. Their menu is sooo vast! We took more than 30mins just deciding what to get because they have so many options and everything looks amazing. I got their black pepper chicken ramen and it was amazing! Very flavourful, I also added a lot of chilli sauce to add a bit of kick. Their vegetarian options were limited, but we got their veggie ramen bowl and it was pretty good. Stopped by mid week for an early dinner. Yuu is located in a mall close to the Aberdeen Center with plenty of free parking. Their menu is very large with something for everyone. I opted for the Hell Fire ramen with pork, egg, corn and seaweed in a spicy broth. The presentation and taste were both good. And there was no issue with the service. I came here with my friend for lunch. They open at 11:30 am and there was a nice crowd waiting to get in, most probably because of Dine Out Vancouver. We weren't feeling the menu so we opted for their regular menu. I ordered the Katsu Don and it took over 40 minutes to get it. I wonder if they were more prepared for the Dine Out menu. My friend's drink was also delivered to a wrong table and he didn't get it until we followed up. The katsu flavour was ok. The egg and onion had a nice flavour. The first time I took notice of this restaurant was when they introduced Ramen beer several years ago. I heard that this menu went viral worldwide, and I was even asked about it by friends in Japan. Finally, I had the chance to visit this restaurant. What I ordered Frying ramen The appearance was truly impactful. The noodles were deep-fried, giving them a firm texture that held up straight with chopsticks, as seen in the picture. After capturing the moment with a photo, the staff assisted us in cutting the noodles, allowing us to enjoy the entire dish. However, the sauce was a bit too oily, and the overall flavor was somewhat mild. Nonetheless, I appreciated the crispy texture of the noodles. Cream curry udon with shrimp katsu, Mashed potatoes covered the top of the Curry Udon alongside a deep-fried prawn. The deep-fried prawn was delightful, with a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. However, the Curry Udon's flavor was too subtle. In my opinion, the curry flavor should be stronger, especially to complement the generous amount of mashed potatoes on top, which exceeded my expectations. This dish needs some refinement. Deep fried oyster mushroom and deep fried oyster These deep-fried dishes were the highlights of the dinner. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. I noticed that this restaurant doesn't offer alcohol, which is okay. Instead, they provide a variety of desserts and bubble tea. The menu concept is quite interesting and definitely Instagram-worthy in appearance. One line review: A good idea smothered by mediocre execution. During COVID, many people seem to feel no hesitation to dine in a restaurant dining room, but medically, it's wiser for me to be more careful than that as I'm considered "clinically extremely vulnerable." So we were attracted to Yuu's, both by the extensive menu and the carhop service. When we arrived, we discovered that the carhop service is an extra 15% charge. That was NOT advertised. But we went with it anyway. We ordered: - Green salad (The best thing in a six-course meal. This was fresh, varied, and delicious.) - Marinated seaweed salad with real crabmeat (The biggest disappointment on the table -- lots of corn and mayo, virtually no crab.) - Beef cubes (Very tender but mildly seasoned. Nothing special.) - Gyoza (supposedly housemade but unremarkable) - Seafood okonomiyaki aka Japanese pizza (This was almost tasteless.) - Spicy Miso ramen (A decent portion, but slightly below average execution. Sadly, despite the name, it was NOT spicy at all.) The server brought a long, narrow table which hooked to the window slots on either side of our car. Remarkably, it was designed so that my wife was able to raise her window to block the cool breeze -- nicely done. The service generally was pretty good; the servers were kind and patient with us. The experience was novel, but the food was subpar. The final indignity was that the six dishes we ordered, plus tax and tip, added up to $100. That's horrible value for what was a subpar meal. Wow. This place has fully changed during the pandemic. I haven't been here for more than like 3-4 years and I was surprised by extra seating and a bigger and BETTER menu! With this change, I love how they kept the whole kitchen section exactly the same when they first opened. Every single time I come to Yuu, I am always impressed by the service of the Chinese ladies who speak canto, and their quick and fast style of a typical Chinese service. Get your food, keep supplying you with tea/water and then get out asap please. On top of that, their extensive menu is awesome. I visited Yuu way back in February 2020 just before covid 19 hit with a couple of friends of mine. (I know this review is super long-winded so skip to the TL;DR part at the end if you don't want to read it all.) Found a nice coupon deal online where you can get their cream curry udon combo and milk tea for only $10.50! (normally over $18) so i decided to try this place out. Location wise, as a transit user, it is pretty convenient. The plaza where it's located is kitty corner from Aberdeen centre skytrain skytrain station. Just a short 10 minute walk. As soon as we came in, we were welcomed by the restaurant host and then served (lukewarm) japanese green tea and given menus as soon as we were seated. The tea tasted alright and not too watered down. First impression of the decor is the table seating arrangement is spacious. Some other restaurants i've been to around vancouver are more cramped but this one gives ample table space between customers which i like. They have nice and comfy dining chairs. These are not your regular dining chairs that only pads your bottom. No, these are the more premium chairs which pads your upper back as well. Thet dark wood tables compliment the comfy vibe of the whole dining area. There was actually a lot of thought behind the design of the restaurant. Soft modern love songs at a medium volume played in the background. Paper lanterns hang on the ceiling with warm lighting All these elements kinda gave a comfortable vibe. They also hung homemade informational hand-written posters in english about japanese food which was a nice touch. The ambience seems to depend on the time of day and how busy it is. It was pretty quiet in the beginning but it got really busy after 6pm. It's quiet if a few tables are occupied but gets VERY loud when the place is packed. You'll have yell a bit to talk when it's packed. As for food, I ordered a hot caramel milk tea. Caramel milk tea tasted artificial but it was still tasty. Nothing to write home about here, a lot of places have similar taste of caramel milk tea like this. It's decent. The problem is the waitress gave me a cold caramel milk tea. It was not hot as I requested. I didn't say anything though because i drank through half of it already and it was quite busy. It was prettyhard getting the waitress attention so I just drank it. First impression of the cream curry udon just by itself was that it's not bad overall. Just based on taste, it was not bad. It had a sort of thin, silky smooth layer of mashed potatoes with japanese brown curry and udon noodles. I like how they also provided an ample amount of sliced bit sized pieces of red daikon and fresh raisins to add as toppings. It definitely enhanced the flavor of the udon. Panko shrimp tempura was included on the side. THAT was really delicious. It had thick and crispy breading and it was cooked well overall. I really enjoyed the crispy texture and flavor of it. By itself, the cream curry udon only had a subtle flavor. But when combined with the toppings mentioned above and the shrimp tempura side dish, it gives it a MUCH fuller flavor. That's when I realized the cream curry udon, toppings, and shrimp tempura definitely should be combined and eaten together. OK, now that's good stuff!! My friend ordered the same thing as I did and he thought the curry was "pretty good." Portion wise, the curry was an ample amount. I was actually pretty stuffed at the end because the combination of tea, potato based curry, and the milk tea surprisingly fills you up big time. Some of the dislikes I have is that the washrooms only have single stalls. It's inconvenient for a medium sized 40+ patron restaurant to have single occupancy washrooms for each gender. It wasn't free for a while when I needed to use it. Another dislike is that the staff needs to work on their demeanor towards customers. The host at the front gave a kind of a cold vibe with no smiles or saying welcome or thanks for coming. Also, a lot of effort was needed to get the waitress attention to ask for a bill. It took a long time to try to get her attention. Service from our waitress was pretty indifferent with no hello or thank you. Just take the order and walk away quickly. Despite all the dislikes listed above, for the price I paid for my meal on this visit, i thought it was good experience overall. Just came for the good food. I may come back and try their other curry someday if i'm craving japanese curry. TL;DR i give it a 3.5 out of 5 rounded up to 4. It's definitely worth a try for their awesome cream curry udon combo! We came here for my brother's birthday dinner ordering from their Dine Out Vancouver dinner menu for 2021 on Tuesday night. To make reservations on Yuu Japanese Tapas website and wait for confirmation your request is accepted. COVID protocol staff wore masks and between each table there were partitions. I ordered: 1) smoke duck patrami salad. - very tasty and great start with healthy salad right? :) 2) grilled unagi don - as this is in stone bowl, it kept super hot and made the rice crispy. I ended drinking the miso soup first and use the bowl transfer unagi and rice over to cool down before able to eat it comfortably. For me, there was a lot of rice which I couldn't finish. My brother and hubby finished all the rice. 3) Wagashi Boba Anmitsu - I loved this dessert! If you love green tea ice cream, boba and azuki red bean, you will love this. I added some food photo from my brothers and husband dinner. My two brothers both order ice-cream parfait and it looks super impressive. Overall food was pretty average and service was very slow (had to call waitress over twice to get bill) Appetizer: Smoked Duck Pastrami Salad, I decided to get this because it was also part of their seasonal menu. The duck was very juicy with a good amount of fat and the citrus dressing helped balance it out a bit. Main: Signature Aburi Chasu Tonkotsu Ramen, I did not like the broth for this, everything tasted very salty without any additional depth of flavour. Also felt like the chasu wasn't very flavorful. Dessert: Yuzu Cheesecake, I thought this was pretty acceptable but nothing to write home about. Came here with the boyfriend and his friends on a weeknight! The wait wasn't too long and was actually one of the few restaurants open in that complex on a Monday. The food was delicious and the way they plated everything was very aesthetic. We had 5 people and they pretty much seated us immediately. For appetizers we got okonomiyaki, duck pastrami, and fried oyster mushrooms. The oyster mushrooms and duck pastrami definitely stole the show. I'm not a huge fan of duck or bird related dishes, but this is marinated so well that the flavors just kind of distract you from the typical duck taste. The oyster mushrooms were also fried perfectly and felt similar to the texture of chicken. They also paired it with a light wasabi sauce that complimented the dish perfectly. I ordered the volcano seafood ramen which in itself, was an experience. They serve the noodles & ingredients in a steaming volcano stone pot and pour the broth in front of you for a sizzling effect. The ramen was delicious, but the temperature was a bit hot for me so if you're not into that would not recommend. Also tried my boyfriend's unagi udon and found this dish to be very flavorful and delicious. Would come here for delicious tapas and also just more aesthetic plating. We tried the katsudon, the volcano beef udon, ika geso, yakiudon, ramen. The volcano beef is enough to feed like 3 people, so much udon....and the broth is closer to like a chicken broth with very little depth of flavor. Beef was okay but nothing amazing. Ika geso was pretty tasty. Surprisingly the pork in the ramen was probably the highlight and melt in the mouth. If you are looking for legit Japanese food, this is not it. Yuu Tapas extended their dine-out menu until March 14th! How awesome is that! We went for their lunch menu, which was only $15 for a 3-course meal! APPETIZER: We got their curry croquette, which we delicious! It was probably the highlight of the meal. it was served fresh - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with good curry flavours. MAIN COURSE: We opt in for the tonkatsu set and the tonkatsu ramen. This wasn't amazing, but we can't complain for the price we paid. The ramen broth was creamy and the texture of the noodles was nicely cooked. However, the broth was quite light and it lacked flavour. The tonkatsu was a little dry for our liking, so the sauce is much needed. DESSERT: We got the matcha ice cream with boba and azuki. Loved this! The matcha flavours were present, the boba was chewy, and the red bean had the perfect amount of sweetness to it! 2FOR1 DRINKS: They also offer a selection of drinks under their 2for1 drink menu. I noticed that this place had a few vegan options, including 2 different vegan ramens, so I tried 1 out for dinner on a Saturday evening. I got the vegan meatballs ramen ($15.95) and chose the spicy miso broth base (+$1.75); the other two bases are regular miso and shoyu. The soup came out in 10-15 minutes. You get a big portion of noodles, bean sprouts, corn, broccoli, seaweed, and 4 vegan meatballs. I'm not sure what they use for the meatballs, but they were pretty good: quite soft but nicely spiced. As for the broth, it was very salty and lacked complexity and depth; it was still tasty but needs a little work to be more interesting. All in all, decent spot that is vegan-friendly, but can't compete with the better ramen joints in town. For example, even in Richmond, Ramen Take and Afuri both have far superior vegan ramen options. read more

When the temperature starts to drop and the days get shorter, the only food I tend to crave is ramen, pho, and warm comfort food. My parents claim that I've been to Yuu before a long time ago, but I have no recollection of visiting this spot, so I'm going to pretend that last night's dinner here was my first. During Covid times, all the staff are masked, there is plenty of hand sanitizer throughout the restaurant, tables are socially distant, and there are plexiglass set up in between each. Their menu consists of an assortment of Japanese tapas dishes, ramen, udon, and curries. This particular trip I was here just for ramen, but after looking through the menu, my parents and I decided to split two appetizers (takoyaki and deep fried oysters), along with our ramen. For myself, I decided on the #54 - Spicy Miso Ramen. It had a spice level of 2/3, so I was a bit worried that it would be too spicy for my tastebuds (I love a good flavourful spice vs painful spice), but it was just perfect. Keep in mind, I have a higher spice tolerance, so while this level of spice was perfect for me, it might not be for you. A couple things I loved in particular about my ramen: 1) The noodle-broth ratio. I find that most places skimp on the noodles, but Yuu is generous! 2) The large portions. Normally, I couldn't finish a large bowl of ramen to myself, but thankfully coming in here, I was starving and finished the whole bowl to myself - woohoo! 3) All the flavours. 'Nuff said. NOTE: Cash and debit only! I've only been here once but I'm already a fan. Decided to grab a late dinner here after my friend picked me up from the airport, which isn't too far away. We came on a Saturday night around 9:15 pm, and there were only a few other tables occupied. They have a fairly extensive menu, but my eyes were drawn to their seasonal ramen, which is the volcano ramen. You can choose to get it with either AAA beef or jumbo clams and prawn for $19.50. I went with the seafood version. Yes, it's a bit pricy, but the presentation was quite interesting. They bring the ramen out in a sizzling stone bowl with everything except the soup. They then pour in the boiling hot tonkotsu broth and you can hear it sizzle in the bowl. They cover the bowl up and come back in a couple minutes to uncover it and let you know that it's ready for you to eat! It's quite fun to order and go through this whole experience. The tonkotsu broth was very rich and flavorful. I actually think it's the best tonkotsu broth I've had in years, since my last trip to Japan. I'm actually drooling slightly as I write this review and remember how delicous that broth was. The jumbo prawns and clams were good as well, if a bit on the bland side, but it was a lot of work to peel the shrimp. I also had to de-vein the shrimp myself. You'd think the restaurant would have done that for you. Next time I think I'll stick to the beef version. My friend got the chicken and tomato ramen ($13.95), and that was also really good, especially if you like tomato soup. The chicken that comes with it is served on the side, so I tried a couple pieces and it was well flavored with really crispy skin. We also ordered a potato croquette appetizer ($5.95). It comes with two pieces and was perfectly fried. My friend and I left quite satisfied with the meal. We tried both the takoyaki and the croquette for appys. Came hot and sMoking. Both were cooked to order as inside was still pipping hot. Packed full of flavour And complimented well by the sauce. The Ramen was of course outstanding as expected. Noodles were al dente, the broth steaming with flavour and skill. Touch of sweet corn and ramen egg to complete the meal. The pork cha shu was perfectly cooked. Tender and melt in your mouth texture..seasoned well and charred just right. even the desserts tasted fresh. The coffee jello tasted so refreshing as it cleansed the palette. the matcha ice cream with the combination of fruit, boba, and red bean...wow! Whoever put this together is sheer genius. Omg loved this Creamyyyy Curry Udon with crispy fried tempura shrimp on their menu! I was surprised to find that cream on top tasted like a rich mash potato paste~ it paired so nicely with the Japanese Curry sauce and the chewy udon noodles. Delicious!! The portion is pretty big, so I recommend getting an appetizer and sharing the dish between 2 people! This place was OK as a dinner place. It IS a tapas place so it probably is better for when you want to drink with friends and have...tapas. Since we went for dinner, we ordered ramen and appies. They serve large portions and the soup broth tasted good. They add more ingredients than other ramen places like 4 large, fatty chasu chunks, corn, and egg. The itself ramen was not bad but the noodle wasn't chewy like authentic ramen noodles should be. With that being said, the ramen was like...a dressed up instant noodle that one can make at home. It made sense that the food came out as quick as it was ordered. For the appies, we ordered soft tofu, deep fried squid, and deep fried mushroom. The mushroom was pretty standard. I wasn't a fan of the tofu but everyone else loved it. My favourite was the squid which was good but a little but more on the chewy side. I hoped that it would be easier to bite but meh. So overall, this restaurant was OK. Not sure if it's a place I'd look for to eat anything other than tapas...but hey, I guess they live up to their name! :) read more

Crack a cold one at Yuu Japanese Tapas? I finally tried their iconic beer ramen ($16.95) as featured on Buzzfeed. To my surprise, there was actually no beer in it (would've been interesting it there was). The ramen is served in cold bonito broth topped with nori foam to emulate the exact look of beer. I'm not sure what it is about this place but I'm usually one for trying different menu items when I go to a restaurant I've been to before but there's just something about this place that makes me want to order the same thing PLUS different things. I love the food here and highly recommend it to people when they ask me what they should eat when in Richmond as it is one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Although owned by Cantonese owners, there's something good about the food; yes, it probably doesn't have the most authentic Japanese flavours. My usual go to items are usually the poutine, deep fried mushrooms and the Japanese curry udon. Honestly, the menu is big and there's a ton of things to try with new specials switching in and out from time to time so I will pop in once in a while to check out their new menus. Currently as a summer one, they've got a "Beer" ramen concept which is ramen served in a cold beer mug and made to look like it's beer but it's not. I think the concept is nice as well as the amount of food you get but it can get a little messy to eat! Overall, one of my comfort places to go to! read more
