I feel guilty for taking this long to write a review for this amazing local business, I started going to their original shop on Robson maybe 25+ years ago when it all started as Gyoza King! Anyways, fast forward to 2024 and I am still amazed at how their business model still keep the feel or a "family run" restaurant where you feel comfortable anytime you go and will be greeted warmly! First off ... Ramen ... its consistently good! This is not a given nowadays! A lot of ramen shops has opened in Metro Vancouver area and they come and go, and one of the reason is consistency, when you get a nice bowl of ramen it can be very satisfying experience but when you return and the standard is not there you will not return for a long time. G-Men has been consistent all these times! Soup is piping hot & superb and the noodle always al dente! Another must order item is their Aij Fry! This was the first place we dined in Steveston during our last visit, as a piping hot bowl of ramen sounded like the perfect counter to the dreary, drizzly weather that greeted us upon arrival. We were alone in the restaurant, and as such commanded all the attention of the servers, who were all very young, and very green. Still, they were welcoming and attentive, if a little skittish. Absolutely massive menu, but somehow missing some noodle shop staples. For example, there was no "spicy miso" ramen option available, despite seeing it in pictures from older reviews. My wife ended up ordering the regular miso, and requesting they try and spice up the broth a bit, which culminated in a side of chili flakes and oil accompanying it. The rest of the meal would entail her jealously eyeing my sufficiently spicy bowl of RCMP, which hit the spot nicely. The side order of okonomiyaki was sadly disappointing, being some sort of microwaved version of the dish, wholly lacking the appropriate textures and flavors; avoid this one, folks. Overall, the ramen is good, not great, and priced to take advantage of the many tourists that come to visit the Steveston waterfront. Came back after all these years. Service is super friendly. Ambiance, is great. Lots of seating. Good for medium size groups. We started with a full order of Chicken Karaage, which my son loves, and the Okonomiyaki & Takoyaki set -- it's basically half order for each. Both taste great. My wife and I both had the Miso Ramen, which were delicious, but for some reason it didn't sit well with us. There might be something in the broth that didn't agree with our system. So this might be the last time we'll be back for ramen at this place. Or, we might just have to shrink down to just ordering appies if we ever find ourselves at this place again. 3 stars because of how we reacted to the food. Haven't been to their original location in a long time but decided to pop by when I was in the Steveston area at their second location. Went during dinner time on a Friday and they had a 2 separate waitlists for patio/indoor. Indoor luckily had no wait, but there was quite a few tables in line for patio (as expected on a sunny summer day!). Restaurant is spacious inside. For food, we opted to try their seasonal summer items and tapas. Looking at the prices, their appetizers and deep fried menu items are actually quite reasonable. We tried the aji fry ($9.5/3 pcs) and the bbq scallop with uni ($9.5/3 pcs). The bbq scallops are so worth it - I don't know a place where you can get 3 generous pieces of uni for this price! No fishy/slimy after taste at all and scallops tasted fresh. The cheese flavour is quite strong and matches well with the seafood. The aji fry is surprised us as well - really crunchy exterior and the fish was flakey. Tartar sauce seemed to be homemade - was nice and starchy and not too sour. For noodles, we got the shio ramen ($17.95). Honestly a little pricy for a bowl of ramen but portions were quite big. Noodles were your typical ramen noodles (not the thin kind) and quite bouncy and chewy. Cold broth probably helped with maintaining the texture. Broth is light with hints of pepper taste. I really liked that they used chicken thigh for its meat - I was expecting breast and was happily surprised. Arugula was crisp and fresh. Not a bad choice! We also got a cold & spicy tsukemen ($20). Was well flavoured with just a tad bit of spice. Overall, a refreshing bowl of noodles from the light broth, scallions, and cilantro. Would definitely be back! read more

My girlfriend and I were supposed to go to the G-men Ramen on Alexandra Road, but stopped by here because we couldn't make it in time for the 3:00pm to 5:00pm close. We were brought with a beach-house-vibe atmosphere. When you walk in, it gives you a cozy feel. We were handed an array of menus ranging from drinks, appetizers and mains. Our choices ended with a bowl of The RCMP, Miso Ramen, the Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki Set, and two C.C. Lemon Maple Highballs. The RCMP is one of my staples for a rich bone broth noodle soup at the Alexandra location. However, this location's soup seemed like some of the fat was not rendered down properly, and could see spare pieces of lard floating in the broth. My girlfriend's Miso Ramen was also something we weren't as used to, telling from its tasteless broth, and overdone proteins. It all just tasted bland. To top it all off, the sides of the okonomiyaki and takoyaki were noticeably burnt. The whole meal fell apart for us. The only somewhat promising addition to the meal were our drinks, which showed ratio, and had a refreshing taste. Even when the waiter gave us our bill, they didn't bother asking us how everything was. Just looked like she hated her job. Very poor, lazy vegetarian (vegan) ramen, among the worst in Greater Vancouver. I'm sure this place's regular ramen is fine, but their vegetarian ramen ($18 plus tax, which is vegan) is a very lazy attempt. The ramen comes with kale noodles, unseasoned tofu, seaweed, spinach leaves, corn, cherry tomatoes, and some other garnishes. The broth was a very basic miso broth, like the kind you get when you order a small $2 bowl of it to start your sushi meal. I expect a much higher quality for a ramen broth. This was super lame and unimaginative, making it one of the worst vegetarian/vegan ramens I've had in Greater Vancouver (along with Yah Yah Yah). If you're in Richmond, better go to Ramen Taka or Afuri for their fantastic vegan ramens. My wife also ordered the Cilantro Goma Tofu Salad ($7.50) and Eda Mame ($5), which were both fine from the tastes I had. With the rain, rain, rain happening in Vancouver, the first thing I have been craving is Ramen! So we decided to try G-Men in Steveston area. The restaurant was fairly empty on a Saturday night, the four of us were sat right away....which to be honest, I was so grateful for! Ramen places these days seem to have endless line ups. We ordered a couple appetizers, Okonomiyaki and tori may don (fried chicken bowl on rice) And then we shared the miso ramen and added corn and egg. I loved the Okonomiyaki, it was fairly thick and had octopus and shrimp with cabbage. It was hot and crispy with the perfect mayo creaminess on top. The chicken bowl was yummy too. They know how to fry chicken and add the perfect amount of mayo and sweet sauce for a comforting bowl of goodness. Sadly, the ramen was most disappointing. The soup base wasn't as flavourful as most ramen places, we had to add a lot of fresh garlic to give it a boost of flavour. Also not a fan of the noodles, I prefer the freshly made ones. And these weren't. They also have beers on tap and every day they have some sort of drink special. Our favorite Ramen shop for decades now. Since they first opened at the original location to my fave one now in Steveston. The Steveston location still has one of the original chefs still running the operation. And it's why we still keep coming back. Great service and always a positive experience. I had forgotten that they don't pan fry their Gyoza but the option of having it boiled is much healthier anyways. Otherwise if I want really good Gyoza. The food was basic yet authentic. The decor was not fancy yet the food will steal your attention. My favourite of the 3 dishes I ordered with my friend had to be the karaage. The crispy skin was thin and non-greasy while the tender chicken was juicy and properly seasoned. Next time I will likely take all 4 pieces on my own and will definitely order the larger size for sharing! My friend enjoyed the shio ramen. I could see the soup was clear with a portion of each of the toppings such as chashu, spinach and fungi. It was very authentic. They chose to use the whole piece of smaller fungi. The small add-on pork belly on rice with half of the flavourful soft boiled egg was very comforting. This is a combo when you order a regular ramen. I liked it as they were generous with the meat and green onions. They also serve dried noodles and rice and poke, etc. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The service was very friendly. first time trying this ramen that opened right in the heart of my small fishing village. now that the autumn leaves are falling and the temp dipping, you can never go wring with a steaming hot bowl of good japanese ramen. ordered the ff: classic shoyu ramen with chasu. fan fav miso ramen with chasu. and curry rice with chicken karaage! and of course: takoyaki! one thing is for sure, servers here are very nice and always smiling. very efficient in clearing tables, seating you, greeting you in japanese, and overall looks like they are happy to work here. decor is very maritime. lots of plank wood is used all throughout. from outside flooring to inside windows. owner must be a bike enthusiast as their are a couple of motorbikes on display as well as helmets. dining inside, you find a good mix of different cultural clientele, but most specially, japanese and chinese people. good sign that the Ramen is goood! appy: the takoyaki was amazing! each one perfectly cooked with a bit of charring at the bottom and coating a bit crispy. sauce was perfect with generous shavings of bonito flakes. inside the octopus was tender. there was an actual piece, instead of grounded variety. the shoyu ramen was amazing! perfectly balance of broth and saltiness. noodles were plump and al dente. cooked with precision timing. cha shu pieces were tender and hd a good ratio of meat to fat. the miso ramen was great as well. a bit on the saly side though. but the miso flavours were strong and enticing. the cha shu pork was a bit cold, which brought the soup's temp down a bit. but again, noodles were awesome as mentioned. lots of scallions to round up the dish and a coupe of fungus to add more texture. lastly, the curry rice with karaage was excellent as well. japanese curry was used and the blending of the flavours were perfect. the vegs were grilled before serving giving a smoky texture. the karaage was fried perfectly. good crunch but not too much breading. chicken was juicy and tasty. when eaten with the curry....a masterpiece! yes! i would surely be back to try their other offerings! maybe even happy hour. cheers! happy eating! read more

I've finally been able to try out the ramen here. I delayed coming here because they open a little later (at 5:30pm) on the days I'm in the neighbourhood. I ordered the miso ramen (~$12.50) as the menu said it was the most popular. The broth had a good amount of miso. I recommend stirring it to get the most out of it, otherwise it'll get stronger nearing the bottom. Also, the noodles had a good firmness to it. The price of ramen is a little pricy considering what you get, but the service and interior was nice. read more

I was so happy to see G-Men open in Steveston! I live close to the area so it's really nice to have more ramen options closer to my neighbourhood. Prior to that, I always had to drive out to either central Richmond or downtown to get my ramen fix. This is their second location and it's much more spacious than the one they have at Alexandra. There's plenty of room and the restaurant can even accommodate big groups of 8-10. The menu selection is the same as the other location. One of my favourite things about the G-Men ramen joints is that unlike most other ramen shops, their menu isn't limited to just ramen and gyoza. G-Men offers plenty of other Japanese treats like sashimi, donburis, and more! I really enjoyed my first visit at this new G-Men. Although the food was amazing, I couldn't give 5 stars for this rating just because of the service. Don't get me wrong, the staff are extremely attentive and friendly. However, I feel that they are unstaffed, resulting in long wait times for both seating and food. Even though there were lots of tables available, their staff didn't have enough time to clear the tables to seat guests. There were around 16 people waiting for seats when we arrived and it took us over 45 minutes to get seats for a table of two. Hopefully this will only be temporary. I wish that that they will able to recruit and form a solid team in the near future to keep up with the high demand! read more

Large spacious space for ramen. The decor is simple. What's cool is there are a bunch of motorbikes and random toys. I guess the owners love it. Looks like they'll have patio space too. The menu is huge for a ramen place, ranging from ramen to salads to karaage to rices to sashimi. I got the shio ramen with bean sprouts and my boyfriend got the ja jiang dan dan noodle. The ja jiang dan dan cold noodle was very peanuty but nice. The noodles were very chewy. The shio was surprisingly refreshing. Their broth is way lighter than the typical pork bone broth. They use a blend of pork, chicken, and fish so it's more of a consomme. The soup was great with the noodles but a bit salty if you just drink it on its own. We also had the raw squid on tofu and the chicken karaage. The squid with tofu was a nice appetizing but definitely not for everyone. Add some chili sauce to it, you won't regret it! Tantan a little too heavy on the peanut butter. Marinated egg seems not marinated enough, but cooked well. Slightly runny yolk. Noodle slightly al dente. At noon, I took my child to eat Japanese ramen, and my son choked before he ate a few mouthfuls, dug his throat, and beat the table. I immediately hugged him from behind to do Heimlich emergency, but I obviously felt that I was not strong enough, and I called for Help to the clerk, and none of the clerks came to help! They have several male shop assistants, I called for Help several times, looked around and saw a shop assistant standing at the food taking place looking at me for help without any response, not even an emergency phone call, about ten seconds later, my son spit out a piece of meat, with a lot of tendons on it, the meat was like a long fat cow, at that time spit on the chair and the ground. Next to a white foreigner is also a mother immediately came to wipe, and then came over to a woman to clean up and ask her son is OK, my son felt that he was choking to death emotion is not good silent tears, my heart ten thousand swear words! Very disappointed in the service of this store, life and death are so indifferent! I don't know if you have children of your own, children's lives are more important than anything, even if you can't save people, even the immediate response to call 911? NOTHING LIKE ALEXANDER RD'S GMEN. AVOID IF YOU WANT THAT EXPERIENCE. I honestly don't know how this place even got franchised as GMEN. I ordered a Shio Ramen, thinking it'll be the same as the other GMEN. I was wrong, the broth was clearly not milky and flavorful like the other place, looking and tasting like store bought chicken broth. The Chashu was subpar and doesn't even have that chataristic swirl on it. I couldn't finish my ramen and stopped after a few bites. I felt extremely bad for not finishing and wasting food but I could not stuff that down my throat. If you are coming here expecting it being like the other restaurants of this chain, don't bother because it's completely different. Think of it as a standalone and set your expectations there. If you ate here and didn't like it, please visit the other GMEN if you come across it as it'll be a lot better. Would give 0 stars if I only had the ramen, but because the karage was pretty good I'll honestly rate it 1. read more

G-men Ramen has a new location at Steveston! It definitely adds varieties to the food scene in the village. This is my second visit and we came here for lunch, we got to try some new items. I had the Shio Ramen with Rawa Don combo, my friend the Tan Tan Men, and we shared a Cilantro Chicken Karaage. My ramen was great, just the right firmness for me. Good flavour of the broth - shio is not as salty/strong as miso, more towards a clear broth. Best for days when you want something lighter. Two big slices of cha-siu, a dash of finely chopped green onions, wood-ear mushroom, and slices of orange zest/peel - great setup. The orange zest really makes the difference, the citrus layers clear your palate from the broth's grease and freshen up the flavour of the broth. The Tan Tan's broth was also very flavorful, buttery peanut taste, and nicely spicy, I've had a spoonful to taste. Cilantro chicken karaage is basically chicken karaage topped with a mountain of cilantro and grated daikon - i love these ingredients, cilantro adds an earthy layer while grated daikon makes the karaage less greasy (after a few pieces it matters). Rawa-don is new, and it is Chicken Skin on rice. This may be a daunting item, but I wanted to try it. This is added to my ramen set, so even a small bowl was very filling. I did like it somewhat although honestly I would only order it again if someone wants to share. The chicken skins were trimmed so fat content was low thankfully lol. It is stewed (?) then sprinkled with shichimi for a spicy kick. The texture is, interesting... very soft and mushy but you'll like it if you like chicken skin. Without feeling overwhelmed, you have to eat it with the rice. I do like it in the end still, it's simple food that gets to the point but I find it too heavy on its own. If it was deep-fried or less mushy, I think it'll feel less heavy. Service is great, very prompt and professional. The decor is quite neat, I actually quite like the display inside, like a rack of miniature shoes and two motorbikes. It has a down to earth, fun, neighborhood-y feel to it. A fantastic place to enjoy authentic Japanese food. The tonkatsu ramen was thick, full of flavor and filling. It was amazing and I would order again in an instant. The ebi Mayo was a little too much mayo to my liking but the chicken and takoyaki were good. read more

You might have to wait a little to get a table (I've been here twice already and there was a line both times) but the staff are friendly and let me know wait times right away. The food is WELL WORTH the wait. Their broth is so flavourful - not too salty, not too oily- I drank down to the last drip of my tan tan men. Such delicious peanutty goodness with just a nice touch of spice. They also have homemade chilli oil on the table and it is amazing! Side dishes have all been wonderful in their own way too. I expected a long wait since it was Mother's Day but was pleasantly surprised we only had to wait 15 min. To get a table out on their nicely partitioned tables on the patio. The food came out fast, hot and delicious! The portions are always hardy and I always have to take some home for a yummy lunch the next day. This is my go to ramen spot and never lets me down! The staff there is always so nice and the service is always great. My favourite is the chicken karage which is always perfectly seasoned and crispy with no bones and the tan tan noodles is a treat most ramen places can't even compare. read more

Atmosphere: Some seating inside. It is low key, nothing fancy. Price: Cheap and standard for the industry. Customer Service: Even though it took me a while to decide, the lady was patient with me as it was appreciated. Food: I was extremely overwhelmed as there was a lot on the menu to choose from in different varieties. It took me a good few minutes to decide.
