Delicious food and hearty portions served in an unpretentious small restaurant in a strip mall. A totally unexpected pleasant surprise! My couscous with veggies and the chocolate mousse were both "off the charts" yummy! Others in our party had New York steak cubes, mussels, croque madame and lasagna. We all walked away satiated and greatful for being served such a delicious meal. The Chef Gilles was trained in France. His wife Tina was the server. Tina was attentive to our every need. They are open only two days a week (Friday and Saturday) and you need to call or text to get the mandatory reservations. We were fortunate to get a table with only one day's advance notice. I went to Z bistro last week without reservations not realizing how popular this little gem is. Luckily there was room at the counter and we happily took that spot. Sitting at the counter is quite the experience, you get to see everything close and personal and boy did we ever! The chef is amazing along with his staff. He prepares and handles every dish and dessert with special attention. You will not find a can of whipping cream for your dessert here, even that is whipped fresh in their kitchen. Ingredients are all super fresh. Everything that comes out of that kitchen looks "Gourmet Magazine" picture perfect. And judging by what me and my special date ordered, it tastes just like it looks! My date had the seafood jambalaya and I had their rib eye steak, the steak is described a lot fancier than what I'm naming here but trust me, it's fancy and it's delicious! Their beer and wine selections are pretty special too. I'm not a wine person but had a glass with my meal. Not being a wine person did not intimidate me at Z Bistro because the staff is so awesome and knowledgeable at giving you suggestions on wine that pairs with your meal. They know their stuff here! I also had a couple of beers. A new discovery, oak barrel aged beer with hints of vanilla by Innis and Gunn. I was very impressed by Z Bistro. I'm super happy with their hard working staff. WHAT TOOK US SO LONG TO DISCOVER THIS BISTRO!? Best kept secret in Carson City. Well, was best kept secret! French based culinary delight. Very small, remember seven tables, menu varies from five star Ribeye Stroganoff to amazing scallops. Dinner reservations a must. I enjoyed my Stroganoff while right brain devoured the stunning pork chop. No rush here, meant to talk, relax and eat. Nice wine list, artisan beers. Take away seems to be the preferred for dinner. Food: My Wife and I went on a date night a few days ago (12/9/23). I got a hamburger which cost $32. The hamburger was very small for the price tag of $32. I also ordered fries, which were too salty. It's quality food but WAY TO EXPENSIVE for what you get. I believe the prices are way too expensive for Carson City. Service: There's only one server, which made it difficult to get our food ordered. This was our first time back after the new owner took over. I ordered the Coq Au Vin (slow cooked chicken thigh). The chicken was a teeny bit dry but I'm still giving a five star review because it was absolutely delicious and extremely satisfying. I could have it once every week. My picture of it didn't turn out but I'm submitting a photo of my wife's Apple stuffed pork loin (special of the night) of which I tasted SEVERAL bites!! I absolutely loved it. We were very happy overall. If you are all about interior design, decor, and spaciousness, this may not be for you. But I am all about the food and this place does not disappoint! Z Bistro is truly a hidden gem in Carson. Owned by some of the most kindhearted people in town, step into Z Bistro for an incredible experience. My mother always used to say that when you sit down, you are transported into the coziest corner of France, and she absolutely is right about that. Z Bistro truly has an incredible menu every time you visit, their food is simply fantastic. My boyfriend and I had our first date here, and I wouldn't change that for anything. We started with Tartare, and eventually had Shepherd's pie and a delicious stew that I simply can't remember the name of. The atmosphere was so welcoming and warm, we had an amazing time. Wifey and I tried out Z Bistro for first time last night. It is a small place with maybe a dozen or so tables. It was pretty full but we got a table quickly. The menu is limited because there's only one owner/chef. However everything we had was superb. The food quality is gourmet. We had the porchetta and the salmon, both were fantastic. The reason for 4 stars is the service was lacking. Only 1 waiting all the tables and 1 bus/dishwasher. I get it small business trying to make it. Even considering the workload I thought the weakness was the waiter, he was pleasant but forgetful and slow. Maybe they need another waiter to help at busy times or one who's more competent. Just saying. It's a bit pricey but not overly so considering post Covid inflation prices and what you were getting. Entrees $30-37, beers $5-7, wife thought the wine prices were a bit higher than normal though. The outstanding quality of the food will bring us back. This guy is a top notch chef. read more

My wife went to the Z Bistro recently with a friend and this is what she had to say: It's been a couple of years since my husband and I went to the Z Bistro and we've always enjoyed this establishment. This time, I went with a friend who was visiting us and I must say it's the best we've had. We each began with their Roasted butternut squash soup. It's flavor was exceptional, the best squash soup ever. I had their Petrale Sole with asparagus and lemon rice. Without doubt, this was the Best Petrale Sole I've ever had. It was very flavorful and perfectly cooked (melts in your mouth). The asparagus was also perfectly cooked, crispy and not overdone and very flavorful, and the rice was the perfect accompaniment. It has been several years since I've completely cleaned up a plate ... but I was ready to lick the plate after I finished every bite on it. It was That Good !! My friend had their Z Burger with grilled onions, etc on a Brioche bun. It was accompanied with frites and aioli sauce. She said it was one of the best burgers she's ever had, the aioli sauce was exceptionally flavorful and something she's never had with frites. We finished off by sharing their Brioche bread pudding ... and it was simply Delicious ... we wanted to lick the plate after we finished it off. There are numerous restaurants around the country who call themselves a "Bistro" to try and impress people and raise their prices. This is one restaurant that we would consider a Real "Bistro." They don't put on airs to try and impress people, their place is small and modest ... they just provide excellent French food at reasonable prices. So I was a weekly patron of Z Bistro for years and when the original owners decided to quit I was excited someone was taking it over. I have been a few times now with the new chef owner, the food was pretty good but way over priced, when Tina and Gilles ran it the menu was different every week. I would be giddy in anticipation of the weeks menu announcement, I don't think I ever paid more then $30 for any meal I ever had there then even after covid. The last time I was there was for lunch on a Friday we ordered a special of shrimp risotto it was delicious but is was $38 which for the portion size was a bit much but the kicker was the Lobster roll special it was just ok and it came on a brioche hotdog bun with some potato chips and the price was not listed on the special board but when i got the check I saw it was $45 dollars way over priced for what i got which was some chopped up lobster meat with some mayo and some herbs not even big chunks of tail or anything that even reminded us of eating lobster. So so disappointing, they say on the website they are flying out the door, but I don't understand how as they are way over priced and not that good. I don't think I will be returning the Z Bistro unless Gilles and Tina come back. read more

And this is exactly what we had here at this beautiful little 'bistrot'. December 31, 2014: 5:00PM Let's start with, "Wow!" 2014 ended with one of the best meals I've had all year. We spontaneously decided to try to get in on New Year's Eve early in the day, and we were able to. That was the first thing that happened. We also were blessed to have a gift certificate from a friend, and so that was a very nice thing as well. We started with the mussels and the roasted whole pear. There were very good decisions. I don't think anybody saw me finish the sauce for the mussels with my spoon, and the pear was wrapped with prosciutto and served with gorgonzola cheese. My wife and I shared, and these two dishes were excellent. Moving on to the second courses meant that we were sharing a porchetta, a slow roasted pork belly that was served with fennel and very finely diced French fries, and the seafood Creole vol au vent, which was a puffed pastry filled with shrimp, scallops, and halibut with a white cream sauce. These were also very good. To further explain this wonderful meal you need to know that we had our wine by the glass on this night, and they only serve French wine, and so, being a bit unfamiliar with these options, we spoke with Jackie at the next table and she, being a regular, had some very helpful hints that helped us make our selections. Lea started with a glass of champagne, and we shared two glasses of red wine with the dinners. After all of this, we were full, and so I can't comment on the desserts, but there were a few very tempting offerings to consider. To conclude, "Wow!" I had no idea there was food like this being served at the Z Bistro. It's worth the trip off the beaten trail, but be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. read more

It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall in terms of atmosphere, with a limited number of tables and two chefs (one that goes back and forth between serving and helping cook). We loved everything about this place - solid wine and beer selection (and delicious iced tea!), great staff, intimate environment, and the food was the best I've had in Carson. My husband and I tried Z Bistro for the first time last week. We went in and were not sure what to expect, it was very small but packed. We did not have a reservation but there was an open table. I would suggest having a reservation. We became a little worried because the menu is very small. We ordered the duck dish and the pork chop. Wow we were thrilled with how perfect both dishes were. We ended up splitting each dish because we both loved our own and each other's. They were the types of meals where you find yourself scraping the dish to try to get just a little more even though you are completely full. Both were cooked to perfection, flavors were amazing, neither dish had any complaints from us. Normally I do not like mashed potatoes but I couldn't get enough on the dish with the pork chop. Although we were full we could not resist the chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce and whipped cream. It was the perfect size to split and absolutely delicious. We will absolutely be back! Another wonderful dining experience at ZBistro. Chef Brandon and Alec never disappoint. The personal and friendly service along with delicious food are a rare find these days. My husband and I enjoyed an appetizer of frites, Caesar salads (which are a work of art), and out of this world short ribs with mashed potatoes, spinach, and roasted carrots. We barely had room to share a house made raspberry cobbler with their signature homemade ice cream. The wine list is excellent, and Alec always has a great recommendation. I enjoyed my previous visit here, but this time around was truly something unforgettable. Being lucky enough to experience France firsthand, I can safely say that Z Bistro is the most authentic French eatery I've found since my travels. Tina, the most gracious and friendly of hosts, runs the place with her husband Gilles, who grew up in Southern France. Gilles, a genius chef, brilliantly crafts a dazzling variety of farm to table dishes inspired by his childhood, reminiscent of the highest quality rural meals of France, as well as entirely different cultures and cuisines. My two friends and I were lucky enough to get a table on their last night of service before their annual trip to France. The place was bustling, yet it still had a lovely, quaint, and comforting vibe to it. Our server, a native Frenchwoman, was extremely kind and personable. She promptly presented us with a basket of the fresh bread, served piping hot right out of the oven! Bread just doesn't get more delicious than this; the inside was steaming and tender, and the crust had a satisfying crunch. For appetizers, we ordered the Asian guacamole and a little bowl of yummy olives and orange slices. The guacamole was incredibly unique and delicious. The addition of sesame oil and ginger added a dimension that set it apart from every other guac I've had. The rice crackers accompanying the dip were rave-worthy in and of themselves; they were surprisingly flavorful and fresh, unlike any rice cracker I've tasted. For my main, I ordered the VEGAN BOWL, which had mildly spicy green couscous, ratatouille, and basil purée. Oh my god, this dish was to-die-for. I had to be careful not to devour it too fast, because it was simply addictive. The couscous was the epitome of comforting, and the ratatouille had an irresistible amount of flavor and a delightful pungency. This was one of the most swoon-worthy vegetarian dishes I've had in a while, and I wish they would keep it on the menu! My friend ordered the BLANQUETTE DE POISSON, which was a medley of halibut, scallops, prawns, mussels, baby potatoes, carrots and peas in a creamy fish-based broth. It was an exquisite dish. Every piece of seafood was perfectly cooked and incredibly fresh, and the creamy base was lusciously rich yet delicate. My other friend ordered the GRILLED MARINATED BROCHETTES, and he raved about it. The meat was impressively succulent and had intense flavors to it. Every last little garnish of this dish was packed full of these flavors as well. For dessert, we shared the CREME BRÛLÉE, and it was easily the best creme brûlée we've ever had. There was a rustic, comforting, home-cooked aspect to it that was utterly satisfying, and the custard was far more flavorful than other creme brûlées. The only one that comes close to this dessert was one I tried in Paris a few years ago. This is truly one of the most special restaurants I've been to lately, and if you haven't experienced it yet, Z Bistro should be at the top of your list. Wow! I mean WOW! I brought my family here as we were gathered in Carson City. Tina greeted us at the door and directed us to our table that had been present with care as she knew we had one 4 year old. His place was set with plenty to occupy him. Tina walked us through the menu and specials noting where those with specific food concerns could rest easy or steer away. But the best part was the food. Gilles must truly have a passion for his art as each plate was better than the next. I still dream about his Iles Flottantes. I highly recommend this place. I have had the pleasure to enjoy this wonderful place several times and have never been disappointed. The owner/chef has a way with food, and creates wonderful dishes that are both delicate and hearty at the same time. The soups and bisques are remarkable, and sometimes, I just want to have that and nothing else because it is so good. But don't miss out on the other wonderful food at this clean and well done restaurant. Really, this is the kind of food that you would find in any French home. There is a home made quality to it that one can't find in most restaurants. It is obvious that you are getting food made by a total professional chef, but the flavors and presentation make you feel like you are being treated to secret family recipes, passed down from generation to generation. This is not a huge restaurant, but it is certainly big on traditional cooking and French traditions in the food. I can't recommend it more highly.
