    We arrived early.
    Thomas E M.

The other day my wife was speaking with a friend of hers, and the friend pointed out that Duke's was a good restaurant. Now, mind you it's been years and years since my wife and I had gone to Duke's, but based on that recommendation, we took a fresh look at it. As an aside, neither my wife, nor I can remember why we hadn't been back, and at the end of the day we felt like this was one of the best meals we've had in the valley or in Carson City in recent memory. We arrived early and enjoyed a cocktail at the bar with Alec. He was friendly and knowledgeable and, with us, patient as we talked about cocktails, a friend we had in common, and the Pappy Van Winkle they had on the shelf behind him. It was right below the Louis the 13th. Let me just say that the Frey Ranch bourbon old-fashioned he made us was delicious. We were seated on time and greeted by a very professional server named Alex. He was assisted by a busser named Kristin. They worked very well together, and we were constantly refreshed with water, bread and drinks. The environment was very pleasing. There were no TV screens, loud noise or music, and the room was spacious. The patrons were nicely distanced from each other. They have established a true old school steakhouse environment. The menu had items that allowed everybody something they could enjoy. Steak was the star of the show, but there was a nice variety of seafood and chicken that was also available. As a group we enjoyed a filet mignon with Berna sauce, the house special that night, which was in New York steak with blue cheese, chicken, Cordon Bleu, and a piece of cod. For appetizers, we had chosen a shrimp cocktail and escargot. Both looked and tasted exceptional. It was at this point that we ordered our first extra basket of bread as I wanted to enjoy every bit of the buttery garlic, and blue cheese escargot drippings that I could. To summarize, I would be remiss without commending the chefs as the food was presented beautifully and tasted every bit as good as it looked. The staff that we bumped into was very positive and friendly. So if you're in the Carson City or Carson Valley know that this is well worth your careful consideration when considering a fine dining experience if you're in the market for a steakhouse. We will definitely be back.

Excellent service and food! Uncrowded fine dinning with quiet music for special meal.

Bartender on Saturday night was fantastic. Food was excellent. But his cocktails were better. "Best espresso martini I've ever had"-my wife. The lobster bisque is an absolute must. The open kitchen and wood fire gave a great ambiance. Great for date night. It's like a 5 star oasis in the middle of a casino and once in the door you would never know there was even a casino.

One last weekend up at Tahoe for the end of summer and I got invited to come to a dinner here at Duke's steakhouse inside the Casino Fandango here in Carson City. It's an old school steakhouse that serves appetizers like oysters Rockefeller, and beef Wellington. They also do tableside preps like a Spinach Salad and some flaming dessert. My friend was disappointed that his fave server wasn't working that night. One thing I thought was unusual was the menus ..... the physical menus ... they were on backlit tablets! I guess before there were complaints that it was so dark in here, the senior citizens had to bring flashlights to read the menu! It is pretty dark in here! We started with the oysters Rockefeller. It was OK, but my friend who had these before, thought the oysters got a lot smaller now. I did think there wasn't much to each one to slip into my mouth. The bread served was not as good as before, it was just a small portion on standard sourdough, not the scrumptious bread that was served last time. It was kind of a junkie basket of bread for a high end place. The flaming tableside spinach salad was next, that was spectacular and super tasty. My entree was the 16 oz Ribeye and my friend had the Filet Mignon. He thought his filet wasn't as good as last time and sad to say, this supposed prime grade ribeye was cook properly as ordered, but the meat was just tougher and needed more chewing than a high end steak should. I could tell it wasn't that tender as I made my first cut with the knife. The Bearnaise sauce was god awful! Who made this? Overall, there were some good things, like the spinach salad, but my friend thought that the experience wasn't near as good as it once was. The service was just perfunctory, you know, just get the job done ... not a very personally engaging experience like you should get at a high end place. This isn't the coffee shop! So, with the general experience just not as good as it was and the smaller oysters .... we'll pass on this place next time.

    Uncleaned shrimp

To start, we waited at the hostess stand for 15 minutes while several smarter pairs came and went. When she finally sauntered up from the casino floor, she just stared at us. We asked if there was a table available; she muttered, "I'll have to ask the server," then proceeded to stand there staring into space. Seeing a couple of seats open up at the bar, we took matters into our own hands. Side note: that hostess seems to be on a secret mission to drive customers away--and we clearly weren't clever enough to take the hint. The bartender was the night's only saving grace; he was a terrific server who actually cared about quality. Unfortunately, the kitchen staff seems to be on the same team as the hostess. I initially considered ordering what the woman sitting next to me was having, but she leaned over and whispered, "Don't. Save yourself." Dissapointed, I ordered something else. We started with the grilled shrimp cocktail. What little we could eat was like chewing rubber bands, and much of it was inedible because they didn't even bother to devein the shrimp (see photos). The filet and lobster entree was equally disastrous: the filet was tiny and poorly cooked--seared on the outside, but near-raw in the center. The lobster was like chewing erasers and arrived so unnaturally hot that I strongly suspect it was nuked in a microwave. The potatoes au gratin were crunchy with raw starch and tasted of nothing. Finally, the pork chops--presumably victims of the same microwave--tasted like damp paper. All in all, the meal was mostly inedible. As kind and apologetic as our bartender was, the experience was a total loss.

    Lobster bisque, beef Wellington

This is a small, classy restaurant inside the casino fandango. We went on a week night and it was very quiet. The waiter's attitude was curt, but he did a good job with everything. Reasonable prices on wine. There is no sommelier. We had a pretty good Merlot. Excellent bread basket! Warm fresh baked sourdough and unique biscuits served with a square of pink salted butter! Delicious Appetizers: The lobster bisque was very different. Reminded me of minestrone, good flavor. Had a good amount of meat. The baked crust on top was outstanding! Mini beef Wellington. Two small steak pockets. Very nice appetizer. Main: The steak Diane was prepared table side by the waiter, and unfortunately it wasn't very good. Fun to watch, but the steak slice is incredibly thin and the sauce is thin and not very tasty. The baked potato side is perfectly cooked. Very good with all the fixings. Dessert: the mocha cheesecake. The cheesecake bottom is decent-good thick texture. I didn't like the cake top at all. Texture was not good for me and it had the flavor of a grocery store cake. So, disappointed in our choices for entree and dessert, but appetizers and wine were great.

Our server was Alex and he was great. The ambiance is very nice, quiet and the lighting was perfect. the ham and potato soup was really good, and our filets were a good MR. We didn't have time for dessert but they all looked fabulous. We'll be back soon!

Prime ribeye and loaded baked potato, fresh veggies and lemon drop martini

First, such a lovely room and our waiter Allen, just a wonderful, friendly pro! Perfect service in every way!!! Having to walk through smoky casino leaves a lot to be desired, so come in from the side entrance and avoid the riffraff. My daughter had the 16 oz prime ribeye steak, medium rare, loaded baked potato, a house salad and warm, fresh brown bread with Himalayan salt. She also had a lemon drop martini that she said was absolutely sublime. I had the braised short rib with mashed potatoes and their delicious creamy potato soup. I was the DD but I'll note that they'll bring you a perfectly poured Guinness if you're not! I love places with the good taste and sense to pour the world's greatest beer! I indulged in the fresh, warm sourdough. SO DELICIOUS! We split crème brûle for dessert. The only course we actually finished (you have to keep your priorities in order) The food is first rate. I was very close to ordering their special, a crusted Chilean sea bass that looked and smelled incredible. If I had any input for their chef...I could do without the little taste of booze in every course. Just my preference. I like clean, simple flavors and with fresh ingredients this good, those old school additions just aren't necessary. Dinner wasn't cheap but we had a fabulous dinner and the total was $141. It's a wonderful place for a celebration or just a splurge and you can certainly eat there for much less if you choose one of their filet dinner specials. You'll get plenty even with the 6 oz.

Lobster Bisque is outstanding. Lots of real lobster in it and the big domed pasty shell is delightful and so tasty! The spinach salad great made table side. Gone are the half off appetizers at the Carson location, I think they have them in Sparks, but not worth the drive.

Rump roast with bbq sauce NOT a Cabernet braised short rib.

So... service was great, ambiance, great. The place had a strong start. Broccoli soup was good and then the food came out... Food was so plan and had very little flavor. Seabass was wrapped in parchment and cooked to perfection, had a nice flake to it and still moist but it was like they forgot to season it, it had no flavor. I got the Cabernet braised short ribs, it wasn't a short rib, it was a cut from a Pot roast or a rump roast & it was not a Cabernet reduction. It was an apple cider vinegar based barbecue sauce would be the best way to explain it. I was really excited to try this place but man it was not worth the money. Wine list was as expected for this type of restaurant not great but they had a decent Justin by the glass.

The basket of wings was cold in the middle and tasted as though they had simply been microwaved. They also tasted old and lacked freshness. The Jump Up and Kiss Me Chicken was overcooked and extremely dry. The flavor was just okay, but there was nothing particularly special about the dish. Service The service was very poor. Our waitress repeatedly rolled her eyes and barely checked on us to see if everything was okay. I had to repeatedly get up myself to ask for condiments, refreshments, and napkins. Management I was also disappointed with how the manager handled my concerns. After I explained our experience, her response was essentially, "Okay, I'll pass along your comments." She did not seem concerned or interested in making the situation better. Unfortunately, I understood why the service was so poor after speaking with the manager. A manager should set the standard for customer service, and in this case, I did not feel that there was much care or concern for the customers. I used to love going to Reds when they had the previous manager. He was always kind, attentive, and genuinely cared about the customers. The food was also delicious and tasted fresh. It's disappointing to see how much the experience has changed. I really hope management takes this feedback seriously because Reds used to be a place I genuinely enjoyed visiting.

I got shrimp for my protein and the chef put a ton of it in! My friend had a combo of chicken and shrimp. We watched as the chef tossed our stuff in the air in the wok. They run induction burners, so no giant flames ... prob a good thing inside a hospital! Our food is served in to go boxes, no plates here. Wow, the food was super scrumptious, I liked our selection of ingredients. I'd say with this wok stir fry station open now, get yourself over here and have lunch. While I didn't partake in the Mussels, I will say the Calamari was good but the Roast Duck was truly amazing. Such great flavor, cooked to a tender doneness and topped with a sweet sauce. The bread roll that preceded the appetizers was something special. Warm and wrapped in paper, it was like opening a Christmas present. The bread was soft, warm and delicious. Seriously good. I ordered a Prime Rib, one of the evenings specials. It was a generous portion, served with potatoes and veggies. The Prime Rib was cooked perfectly (Medium Rare ofcourse) with the right amount of marbleing and seasoning. This was perhaps one of the best, most flavorful Prime Ribs I have had in recent memory. I don't know if she realized just how big a 1 1/2 pound (24oz) Lobster really was. This thing was HUGE. Like some giant sea creature. The Filet while a generouse portion, looked puny by comparison. She said the Lobster was a amazing but in full transparency, most of it when home. :-) We had a big party and the restaurant was quite full by the time we left. Today we got the following: Special - Pulled pork on a pretzel bun with fries. Two orders. Wow, it exceeded my expectations. Well, I honestly did not have high expectations. The pork was tender and flavorful; I did not even need the extra BBQ sauce that I asked for but used it to not waste it. And with a generous amount of fries; my buddy did not finish his fries. I also like the nice touch of a fried pickle on top of the slider. Fish and Chips - My other buddy that was craving BBQ switched to this and loved it. Chicken Breast Sandwich - My healthy buddy. He was also not able to finish his fries. All of which was good. And I plan to come back for Happy hour in the future. Especially Wing Wednesdays! Ambiance - Larger than expected. Larger than it looked from the outside. This place is like two units. I hope my pictures did it justice. Full bar, plenty of tables in both rooms. Pool tables, darts, etc. Semi open kitchen. Plenty of street parking. Open 6 days a week; closed Mondays. Service - Colgan (name on receipt) was so professional! Checked up on us very often. Even better, he was proactive and asked us if we wanted this or that with our orders. Price - $57 + generous tip. FYI - 4% credit card charge or 4% cash discount, see picture. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2014. We have actually been hanging out in this area for the last few years and now will be more frequent customers.

Meet one of the owners Rowen. He was very nice and cordial! We always appreciate that. We live here in Carson and now we feel we have been missing out. We'll be back! Customer service with Colgan as bar tender waiter was excellent!!
