Dearest gentle eaters, this is my FAVORITE place to eat in Burlington BAR NONE?! Why? Because you will be greeted by the happiest and most genuine and enthusiastic person ever, Miles! He exudes positivity and is such a breath of fresh air. Absolutely adore him and all the delicious foods they offer here. They have the best soup in town! Today they had a special of grilled cheese and tomato soup for $15 and boy I'm stuffed! The sweet potato soup was delectable too. If you want there is a salad bar $16 per pound and cold sandwiches of curry tuna, Reubens galore. They also offer a variety of wine and assorted local beer. The place is so cozy and everyone here is respectful and kind! Always great energy and we always leave with a smile! Our favorite dining place in Vermont! Please come and support this local eatery! Also shout out to the bathroom art and gender neutral stalls!

Check out this place in Burlington whenever you get a chance. It's for sure one of the best restaurants in town, and it's not crazy expensive. Zabby And Elf's is a long time favorite around here for healthy good stuff, and at a good price. A lot of choices on the buffet. There's also lots to get for vegans, including salads, and sandwiches. As the name of it implies, soup is on the menu. It's got a lot more than just that obviously. There's a lot of salads and sandwiches. Also they have a big salad bar. It's about $12 for a full sandwich. Among these is the Vegan Club. This is made with vegan mayonnaise. Looks a lot like a regular club. This replaces bacon with tempeh, and replaces chicken with tofu. It's about $15 for the salad bar. The choices on this include beans, pasta, and many other things. For sure it's one of the healthiest places in the area to eat. It's closed Sundays and Mondays. There's a ton of options for vegans and vegetarians.

Stone soup is our favorite brunch spot for the past 20+ years. We typically go there for the delicious scones and quiche, but decided to branch out today and get the BLT and vegan Tomato Soup and were thrilled with our selection! One of the charms of this unique café is everything is made from scratch and the staff is always gracious to have you. The open garage-style window gives one the feeling of eating outside while still being in the comfort of the atmospheric inside.

On a cold day in Vermont, two adults sat down to a steaming bowl of soup. The warmth from the soup spread through their bodies, providing much-needed relief from the chill outside. The rich, savory flavor of the soup filled their mouths and satisfied their hunger. As they ate, they were grateful for the simple pleasure of a hot meal on a cold day. Despite the harsh conditions outside, they were able to find comfort and enjoyment in each other's company and the hearty soup that warmed them from the inside out. Yes, this place is solid, give it a try if you are in the area

Amazing! I tried the vegetarian reuben and it was SO SO good! I also tried their baked goods and that was very good too. Lots of veggie options and laid back atmosphere. Friendly staff!

At first glance, Zabby and Elf seemed a little all over the place. They had a short menu, a small hot and cold buffet, lots of pastries and breads, and soup. But we were so pleasantly surprised it was amazing! My husband and I shared a large soup of the day- which was sweet potato, bacon, and corn chowder. Kind of an odd combo, but it totally worked. We each also got a plate from the hot bar. Everything was delicious and flavorful. Especially the wings! I would absolutely go back.

I really wanted to find a healthier place to grab lunch on one of the days my boyfriend and I were in town. Zabby and Elf's came up in my Yelp search so we decided to check it out. The exterior is really cute with open windows and lots of plants. The interior is cozy and earthy. We decided to split the reuben and a cup of broccoli cheddar soup, but the buffet was full of really yummy looking dishes. They also have lots of baked goods that looked amazing. The space is small and a bit cramped, but we were able to snag a table near the open window up front. The soup was piping hot and really tasty -- full of cheese flavor and it warmed us up on a sort of chilly day. The sandwich was definitely not as good, unfortunately. The meat is roast beef instead of a more traditional corned beef, and the sauerkraut was pretty sour. The meat was a little tough to bite through and overall it just wasn't what I was imagining when I think of a reuben. I really appreciate their use of local ingredients and would probably stop in again, but would try something from the hot bar next time.

We were drawn in by their sign to be honest, but we got some delicious pastries! We tried the Pumpkin whoopie pie and a frosted sugar cookie and really enjoyed both. The whoopie pie in particular had an almost crispy crust, and was just the right amount of sweetness. They were quite busy so we didn't stick around for lunch but they had a really enticing buffet!

Enjoying the weather. I'd have shared a picture of the food but I devoured it :)

Yum, Nice selection of sandwiches and soup. I had the 1/2 tuna curry sandwicwith soup. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. The servers were very nice and helpful. (They also had a hot/cold bar by the lb. ) Clean and the door open/ fresh air made for an overall enjoyable lunch. Would definitely eat here again if in the area!

Stone Soup is a Burlingtonite's favorite place to get a healthy hearty meal. Filled with fresh pastries, and offering hot and cold buffet, it is a vegetarian's dream. The self-serve hot food and cold food buffet offered delicious self selected salads. I saw large dinner plates piled high with lettuce, sprouts, peppers and tofu. It looked delicious! And the jam filled thumbprints and the Russian wedding cakes looked so festive, crumbly and delicious! We had the special: 1/2 pound burger on rye bread with fried potato slices and blue cheese with beet salad. The burger was juicy, the beef was local. The sweet beets were tender cubes in a vinaigrette sauce. Neither of us liked the pungent blue cheese, so we left it to the side. We also order a sweet potato soup with bacon and corn. The soup came with a huge piece of fluffy bread. The soup was perfect for a cold December day: hearty, warm and chunks of bacon and kernels of starchy corn. They offer ever changing specials, $1 sale of day old cookies and bread. Definitely get a slice of pie or sweet zucchini bread. The cream cheese frosting on the bread was awesome! And I loved meeting my old college friend here with her hubby. Protip: No one takes your order, so you order at the register and if you order hot food or a special, the cook brings it by. Get here early because lunchtime gets packed. I saw several groups come in and leave due to lack of seating. We tried to finish up so other people can sit.

I brought home all they had left today

I've eaten chocolate bobka cake at many delis and restaurants over the years. I have to say the these guys probably make one of the best cakes out there. This one was better than Zabar's in NYC.

This was mainly due to the great service and delicious meals ordered by each of us in our family of three. Our table was never left waiting and the food was served hot. Our meal choices were varied, including apps such as steak tartar and cheddar ale soup for one and the meatloaf plate and the turkey burger for the others. Everything was made with original flavor additions such as homemade sauces, fresh breads, and unique use of herbs and spices. Lastly, I was told to mention that the hand cut fries were exceptional. Since we visit Burlington often, we look forward to returning to the Farmhouse to try other dishes on their menu or just ordering the same meals since they were so good. We all agreed that this restaurant has definately moved to the top of the list for our next trip to Vt.

Service was good, attentive, didn't make us feel rushed. However, what are we doing with the pricing? It was probably 1/4 of a potato with a nice yogurt like topping and some fermented turmeric diced cauliflower. But that ONE, SMALL, latke $16??? Pretty awful. Do better. I'm so sad this is what's happening with this restaurant... please, at least give your customers a reasonably fair serving size if you're going to charge such exorbitant amounts. A new dish, a red pepper flatbread with burrata and tomato and basil. Very good. Again, extremely over priced. The size of one medium piece of naan bread with nice toppings and it cost $24. I beg to differ. These are all snacks and some are snacks for mouse sized humans, so tiny (referring to latke) I truly don't understand. I will reiterate, food quality is good and food always seems fresh. That's about all I can continue to confirm/say positive from my last two experiences over the last 3-5 months. I am sad.

We were really looking…read moreforward to this visit since reading that chef Paul Trombly was nominated for a Beard award. The only downside of our visit was having to wait nearly 30 minutes past our reservation time. It is a very small dining space, and when folks won't vacate their tables, there's not much to be done. There are tables outside in a "streatery," but it wasn't al fresco weather. Fortunately, the food made up for the wait. The menu is laid out in a series of shareable, mostly vegetable small plates, concluding in two or three proteins (meat or fish dishes), and desserts. We started with Smashed cucumber salad, Green garlic borek, and Garlicky green beans. Everything was delicious. I then had the Duck breast shish, which was fabulous! They were out of the fish, but substituted Scallops, which M said were very good. B had Fried haloumi, which she really enjoyed. Served with a good red wine (in cute cafeteria tumblers!). For dessert, there was Olive oil cake and a vanilla Creemee sundae. They were both excellent. Our server Allie was special, very engaging and in control of the table. We were appreciative that chef Trombly dropped by the table for a nice chat. Definitely going back next time!

Tonight we had the halibut as our main with samples of other items and it left us put off and hangry by meal's end mainly because of the gaslighting. I'll explain. We started with the carrot and white bean hummus accompanied by cucumber and crispy focaccia and seed dukkah. This course was followed by a"secret" menu item, the gem salad which we've had previously and had hoped for something else. The third item interesting was also NOT on the daily menu... it was a greenbean dish with ??? because, well, the ingredients and dish didn't match the menu!. When asking about the discrepancy I was told the chef was being "whimsical" and decided to put this together (??!?!!??!) but it was similar the the stated menu item ( broccolini). When comparing the ingredients it didn't jive. I call B* frankly and think it is more of a bait and switch with lesser ingredients at a premium price. This is not the first time this has occurred and I will not be back because I feel it is dishonest. Yes, the food is excellent in taste, good on quality, tiny in portion size if i'm honest and I don't think it should be done. 2/5 or 40% of items served were " secret" items... yeah right. Anyhoo, the main did match the description -halibut- and the dessert(strawberry basil cremee) with extra added olive cake was as described too. The temperature inside can and has varied with each visit. I recommend eating inside if AC is working. Noted also the staff has been less attentive (water refills and adult beverage orders). Growing pains, maybe. Resting on laurels, perhaps.

My bf liked the shrimp appetizer/smaller dish and we all liked the trout, but it seemed a little mushy/overcooked. Cons: loud/bad acoustics, dim, portion size(only for one specific dish) A little hard to hear inside when it's at peak capacity. Was at dinner with a group of four and it was quite hard to hear the person diagonally across from me the entire night. Lighting was a little too dim for my personal liking but others may not mind(for example, it was darker inside than it was outside at 6pm). Food was overall very good. The disappointments were a clam dish we couldn't even first find any clams in and then the two people who got them when we divided up the dish only got two each! Coming from the SF Bay Area, we have very good access to good momos at least in South Bay. What we got this day in Burlington would have been a great challenger to all the Momo shops in the Bay Area that I'm typing this review in right now. (Ignore the dashes in words. I don't want people to find my review using the words with dashes because this was a special day.) ----------------- 3 orders of momos. Chai. The restaurant was absolutely over-whelmed. The front of the restaurant were packed to the br-im with customers wai-ting for their takeout orders. We had to wa-it ha-lf an ho-ur for ours. After all, the steamers could cook only so many momos at once. Everyone was nervous, excited, and on their toes. Yet, service was not compromised. The owner, understanding our frustration, gave us some mango lassi while we waited. We're finally opened up the tin container when we got to our viewing location, which was around, 20 minutes? We loved it. The momos were still warm and juicy. The flavors were relatively basic, rustic, but also felt very healthy, in a sense that it was missing that je ne sais quoi, that roundness in taste, that I assume is a LACK of MSG. What kicked this into 11 was the chutney it came with. More tomato heavy than my average experience. You could taste how clean the tomatoes were. It was FRESH! Now, that was ahead of a special event that may never happen in this Burlington again in our lifetime. I imagine things would be even better on any other day.

The menu is a little chaotic and hard to read, but I did my research beforehand and knew I probably wanted the brakefast sandwich. Luckily Nate ordered the special number 8 and my friend got the basterd bing, so we all kind of shared. Everything is vegetarian! The employee taking our order was super friendly and kind, very much appreciated! We also got some coffee drinks and a donut to share. The donuts are made with biscuit dough, which was interesting and tasty. The texture is quite dense but not dry. Our food was ready quickly and the portions were large - you could definitely share something if you're not super hungry. I need to take a moment to talk about the number 8 sandwich. It BLEW MY MIND in the greatest way ever. I LOVE when I eat foods I've never had, even more so when those foods are delicious and mind-boggling. This is a breakfast sandwich on a tasty sesame bun and it features chicken fried egg. So imagine a pile of scrambled eggs that they somehow deep fry(???) and it turns into something that so closely resembles fried chicken it's wild. Seriously I'm still thinking about this sandwich. I know it sounds so weird but really you just have to try it. The brakefast sandwich was good, but VERY MESSY. Plan for lots of napkins. I will be back for the number 8.

I was seated overlooking the open kitchen, and it was a treat to watch the chefs work with such precision and care throughout the evening. I decided to trust my server's recommendations from start to finish, and every single dish exceeded my expectations. Each course was beautifully prepared, thoughtfully balanced, and showcased the incredible quality of the ingredients. The atmosphere was intimate, relaxed, and inviting, making it the perfect place to enjoy a meal, even on your own. Every member of the staff was warm, attentive, and made me feel like a valued guest. Hen of the Wood delivered one of the best solo dining experiences I've had. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Burlington and will absolutely be back.

We ordered the rolls, tuna crudo, oysters, tagliatelle (2 orders) and a fish dish. Only the one fish dish was good. Everything else was fresh but not at all to our taste. Because the food was fresh, we rated it a 3 to be fair. Obviously a lot of people like it, so maybe check some of my other local reviews to see if our taste aligns, but I would not go here again. Not to mention that it was very expensive. For the above with a couple drinks was $315 including tip. And the portions are fairly small, so come hungry, leave broke and still hungry.

A no laptop policy keeps things flowing and encourages folks to talk vs work. Breakfast menu is available all day while lunch starts at 11 and goes until close at 3p. We tried a few things: * croissant - super flaky and perfectly made. * breakfast sandwich - with sausage. Buttery and crispy edges toast with fried egg and melted cheese with sausage. One of my favorite breakfast sandwiches ever. * banner eighteen - a play on cheesesteak with broccoli mushrooms and shaved steak in a sesame hogie. This one had slight spice and a slight taste reminiscent of a combination pizza. It's a big sandwich and quite tasty. * oatmeal raisin cookie - not too sweet which I loved. Chewy. * fresh baquette. Bread . . . . . * maple lemonade - slightly sweet with a good bit of tartness. It was good! I'd definitely comeback here if I'm craving some sandwiches

We tried the eat the east breakfast sandwich ($11) and the vermonter sandwich ($16). I especially liked the vermonter sandwich and the bread it came on. The cafe also sells various bread items and baked goods. One thing to note is that since the cafe is counter-serve, seating is also first come first serve. We were able to snag a seat right as someone left, but for that reason I would recommend coming at a less peak time if able. August First is deservedly a busy spot in Burlington and I would be there often if I were a local.
