my daughter did kids acting camp over the summer and we thought Zach Scott classes during the school year would be a cool "follow up" (but closer to home). I couldn't have been MORE disappointed. One day, not many kids came so the teacher said that they would just color because they couldn't get anything done with so many gone. Another day, my daughter drew of picture of the character that she would play in the final performance....but didn't actually dress up for the final show. i know I wasn't the only parent who was disappointed- the class started with around 15 kids - the final performance had 6-7 kids show up. Oh and the final performance? The lip synced songs. They did some suuuuuuuuper basic dance moves (while the teacher stood in front of them doing the moves for them to copy). And had the shortest acting performance that I've ever seen in my life. What a waste of money. She could have learned more on you tube. Zach scott sent out a course evaluation and I said basically same as above. They asked if I wanted to contacted and I said YES. No contact. Zach scott is the only place that is convenient during the school year for classes because kids acting doesn't have Saturday classes in south/central. So I wanted to make it work with Zach Scott. But nope! Waste of time and money. read more

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious !! Not nearly perfect, it is perfect. Wonderful! A true delight! Just finished Marry Poppins and it's as Good if Not better than the Julie Andrews classic! Perfect choreography, amazing lighting and the best actors! It's pricey but it's so worth your time and money . They use a projection screen to augment the performance and I love how intelligently and subtly it's used during a play . The music is wonderful and sounds beautiful . I had zero problems hearing the actors performance. The props and staggering is top notch and feels modern yet familiar. The seating is intimate and every seat is a good one . I would definitely recommend this to anyone. I loved my experience and I will definitely go back and see another performance. 10/10 read more

An absolutely wonderful experience you won't regret!! We had the privilege of seeing Mary Poppins on opening night. The show was absolutely fantastic!! I highly recommend going to see it! The play was in the Topfer Theater, which has a pretty large stage but is an intimate setting too, there's definitely not a bad seat in the house! When we walked in we were immediately greeted by cheerful greeters! The entry area has 2 bars and seating, there was live music before the show too! Also there was happy hour until 7pm with $1 off beer and specialty cocktails which we definitely took advantage of. The atmosphere was perfect and relaxing before the show! We also preordered drinks for intermission and they were sitting waiting! All we had to do was pick them up, no waiting in line, although the lines were not very long anyways so if you do not preorder you probably wouldn't be stuck waiting all intermission. We are already planning our next visit, we definitely want to check out the shows at Christmas time!! read more

Less than impressed with the Zach Theater Classes. While the professional side of Zach Theater puts on great shows, the acting classes really fall short. This is our 3rd time trying a class and each time the classes were just a disappointment and totally misrepresented what they would be like from the demo session. This last time my daughter attended an 'Acting for the camera' session and it ended up just being a totally disorganized session and not a camera in sight. Instructor showed up late constantly and at one point just left the kids to their own devices in a portable. I would continue to support the professional shows but won't be enrolling our child in any more classes. read more

So I've only been to the smaller stage at Zach Theater, but from what I've seen this theater is right up my alley. I need to see everything that happens on the stage. I'll obsess over the interrupted view and miss the whole show if I can't. I can honestly say there is not a bad seat in the house. The aisles are steep enough that even the tallest person could sit in front of you and you wouldn't miss a thing. The acoustics and speaker system is on point, too. Remember how I need to see everything? Well, that goes double for hearing everything. There are such subtle voice inflections that can completely change the meaning of a line. Give me that sound! You can hear it all with the way they rig up the performers. The whole play was brilliant, but not stressing over the theater made the performance that much better. Thank you Zach theater.. My friends and I went last night with very little to no expectation for a play that's been DONE to death. This rendition is along the lines of "Moulin Rouge" and " Across the Universe" in the way it takes the play and subjects it to current and past songs that really resonate with emotion and meaning. You must hear the "I Wanna Dance With Someone" sung by a wonderful female actress in such a heartbreaking way of saying goodbye (I'm getting teary just thinking about it). This play is FRESH, EXCITING and immediately grabs your attention with the first Doobie Brothers song..........that's right, I said Doobie Brothers. Period costumes only add to the relevance of the spirit of joy and hope in a story that's so morose until the very end. We had a great time last night at the ZACH Theatre for the opening night of Mary Poppins! First off, Mary Poppins is playing on the Topfer stage at ZACH until September 4th, 2016. Go see it! It was an absolutely magical show that has you whisked back to your childhood the entire time. You will find yourself singing and clapping along to all of your favorite musical numbers. Without giving anything away, the play has a lot of spectacular and unique elements that give you goosebumps and make you go "ooooooh ahhhhhh!" Finally, a big standing ovation for the terrific cast and crew! You were all practically perfect, in every way! The theater itself is intimate and every seat has an unobstructed view of the stage. Definitely not a bad seat in the house. The auditorium is comfortable and despite it being a smaller theater, you do not feel packed in like sardines. Everything from the acoustics to the lighting was on point. In the lobby, there is a bar where you can purchase snacks and drinks (yes, adult drinks too). They even give you a lid and straw so you can enjoy your cocktails while watching the show. Before the show, they had someone singing and playing the piano in the bar area. Between the bar, the live entertainment, and the fun Mary Poppins Photo Booth, it was a very enjoyable way to kill time before the theater doors opened. I would recommend going early so you can check out everything the theater has to offer! Already looking up what other shows are coming to the ZACH theater this year. I have always loved Zach Scott Theater since I moved to Austin 10+ years ago. The new location is stunning. It is a top notch facility. One thing I really like is that they maintain reasonable pricing by selling the first two rows of seats for $20 a pop even for their most popular shows just so that there are affordable ticket options. I love a good deal, and I don't think I would shell out $40-60 a ticket to see a show, but for $20 it is well worth it. These are great seats, no obstructed views too. I highly recommend it. Concession stand is good, numerous options, booze and non-booze. The talent and the performances are always top notch, but the setting is way more intimate than the UT PAC or the Long Center. If you like theater, you need to check this place out. read more

We were able to get 2 seats in row F on the aisle the night before the play for about $65-70 each for the show Evita. The view was amazing, I had no problems with being able to see. The atmosphere is great outside of the play and the audience is a very mixed group of people. You can come in a tshirt and shorts or an evening dress, no judgement! I was visiting from Denver and went in to see the Christmas Carol musical and, with no expectations at all, was completely and utterly blown away. This theater, this cast, this facility is the therapy we all need after the election of 2016. It's hard to put more simply than that. My boyfriend and I really love this theatre!! It is a non profit that believes in keeping children and young adults motivated to pursue the arts. They also believe that actors, staff & musicians deserve the right king of decent pay and pay much much better than other theaters. The reason I know this is because my boyfriend performed lead electric guitar for their performance of One Man, Two Guvnors. Sucks if you missed out! Their bathrooms always get long lines before the show and during intermission. Don't fret though, there a ton of stalls that are all clean and nice. They also have a full bar!! Woop woop! ZACH is one of the best places to see live theater in Austin. I've been many times over the years but I just went to see Jungalbook (I did receive a pair of free tickets from Yelp). I have NEVER seen a show there that wasn't really good on one end of the spectrum and amazing on the other end of the spectrum! And as a former season-ticket holder for years, I have seen dozens of shows there. Last night I had the privilege of seeing "Ann" and it was absolutely another five star show! The new Topfer theater at Zach is a beautiful, intimate theater. There is not a bad seat in the house. The staff is always very friendly too! The only thing that is less than stellar is the wine and the price of the wine. It is not very good, cheap wine. It tastes like $5 a bottle wine and it is $10 in about 4-5 oz plastic cup. Way too expensive for such bad wine. The cocktail list is much better quality. I highly recommend catching a show at Zach. You will not be disappointed. read more

I have lived in Austin for about 7 years now and I never went to the Zach Theatre. I always thought mediocre shows performed here. While the better shows were in other locations. But boy was I wrong. I had the opportunity to see Every Brilliant Thing, and wow, what an emotional rollercoaster of a show. There were moments of both laughter and sadness. This was a very thought provoking show and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were extremely friendly and I didnt even realize there were multiple buildings associated with Zach Thearre. My first time at ZACH Theatre was last Sunday afternoon to see the Tony-award winning "All the Way" which was excellent! I purchased discounted ($25) tickets, so we were seated in the very front row on the very far left. Unfortunately, as a result, our view was slightly obstructed at times. Particularly when there were "frozen" actors in the foreground and action going on in the background. (sitting even one row further back this would have been less of a problem) That is my only quibble, and the reason for the one star deduction. That said, the play was excellent and the venue looks great and new (but that's half of Austin). Seating was comfortable, parking wasnt a pain, and the 3.5hour show went by in the blink of an eye! I will definitely be back for future shows, if this is the caliber I can expect of programs at ZACH Theatre. read more

Came here once for a small production of Cinderella for students and again for Mary Poppins! The venue looks and feels new, the productions are fabulous, and the acting and dancing are beyond impressive. I was so entertained! My boyfriend and I went last night to see Buyer and Cellar thanks to winning tickets from @yelpaustin. It was such an amusing show. J. Robert Moore did an amazing job in this one-man play. THE BEST! LOVE LOVE LOVE this theater! "Theater can sometime be very pretentious... NOT this place... In typical Austin fashion the theater staff and volunteers are friendly and very helpful. The new Topfer Theatre is STUNNING... very modern but so comfortable at the same time! The lobby has a souring two story space... with cool bench seating ... and a modern bar with a million dollar view of down town. The drinks are a bit steep in price but no more so than any other really nice bar in town... and the bartenders as fast and efficient but VERY friendly! They all the typical bar fair but for every performance they have a selection of drink specials... NOW the meat and potatoes.... the Topfer theater .... it is an imitate feeling yet seats a respectable 420 people (yes yes... 420 I KNOW ha ha ha.... dramatic eye roll....) it plays like a MUCH larger theater! I have seen several season of plays here and love d them all... from everything from White Christmas to Tommy ... the stage is large enough for a REAL cast and a full orchestra. I have been very impressed with the way they make the stage look completely different with every new show. I plan on being a long time theater geek for a long time to come! read more

My friends and I have a Zach Theatre outing club; we love it that much. We snag first row tickets for $30 including fees - what a steal! I highly recommend their Christmas shows for a lively, festive environment as well as any of their shows on champagne night for the free snacks and champagne and parking is $10 but there's also a free parking lot near the theatre read more

My daughter looked forward to her musical theater summer camp since January and was beyond disappointed. She came home in tears each day, complaining about how instructors were belittling and dismissive, even "rude" (her word), and how there were clearly favorite students who received special treatment because they have attended camps in years past. I saw some of this favoritism on the first day during drop-off, so it is apparent to everyone. The classes were not challenging, even though this was a camp for students aged eleven and up, and my daughter complained repeatedly that they did a lot of "sitting around" (again, her word). The instructors are college students with little to no teaching experience and poor classroom management skills. Plus the cost is much higher than any camp we have attended elsewhere. A serious disappointment for many reasons. read more

Zach doesn't have a "company" and Austin is full of talented people, I'd like to see some of the hundreds of new people who audition for them actually get on the stage for a change. I enrolled my 6 year old daughter into a class called Broadway Kids at the north location and on the first day I asked the teacher if they were going to learn acting technique which she said yes. So after 4 weeks which is 4 classes there was no teaching technique but mostly alot of jumping around, felt more like a gymboree class. My daughter said over and over that this is so easy and she was bored. When I discussed this with the front desk girl she just acted irritated and said I could not have a refund or credit and I could not switch her into a more advanced class. She basically left me with no solution. Pretty much didn't care if I ever came back. So now were out 250.00 and a very sad 6 yr old. read more

This was our first time coming to ZACH. We watched a play in the Topher Theatre. This place was very clean and the staff were all very sweet and friendly. Beautiful theatre and a beautiful performance of Mary Poppins! I like that it's not exactly like the movie, with the added songs and change of scenes. Most importantly my son enjoyed it as well, not much seems to keep his attention very long now a days. But He loved the songs and how animated the characters were! Just went to see the children's theater production "Tortoise and Hare" at ZACH Theatre's Kleberg theater, which is right next door to the main theater. It was absolutely fabulous! My 9-year-old nephew and 5-year-old niece were sooo into it. My sister and I loved it. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The theater was fabulous. It's small enough where there's no way for there to be a bad seat. So amazing! read more

I was lucky enough to see the FINAL showing of Hedwig and the Angry Inch last week. It beat all of my expectations, of course. I really like going to this theater. The vibe, the people, the intimate layout of the theater. Coming early is extra great to take it all in beforehand. Every time I go here I wonder why I don't go here more often! Smaller theater review: every seat is a great seat.. Some are even on the floor of the stage! Plenty of bathrooms and of course a bar with cocktails. It also seems that they will let you bring your refreshment back into the show.. Party on! Intimate, clean, drinks and not too crowded. read more
