On our way to Asheville and decided to stop for lunch. I much prefer to find a great local spot instead of a fast food off the highway. Zach's was such a great find and easy to hop off the highway for lunch. We had our dogs in the car but it was cool out and they were doing construction on the sign out front or something so we left them in the car with the windows open. I love that they have dog pics all over the walls though... should have broke out the camera! I'm not sure who came first but the sandwiches reminder me of the Columbia based shop called groucho's i.e. fat sub roll, cold cuts, dipping sauce. I will say that this place had more options and was likely family run which I like. The soup special of the day was chicken and sausage corn chowder and I could have eaten a bucket of it. The lady serving us said she takes leftovers home regularly and I don't blame her. For my sandwich I went in a similar direction to my Groucho's order because I knew it would be good. I had turkey and cheese with bacon crumble on a sub roll with dipping sauce. The food was all excellent and the service was so friendly. I got the chicken salad sandwhich and pasta salad. Both were very flavorful and delicious. The pasta salad was seasoned to where it felt like I was eating healthy if anyone knows that feeling, like eating a salad or something. The people were super friendly serving me and gave me a recommendation of having my sandwhich toasted or not. The restaurant is owned by the towing company next door and is named after one of the dogs they used to have so there pet pictures everywhere. I'd go here again. read more

I got the BLTA with pasta salad. The sandwich was very good, the bread was perfectly toasted and not soggy even though I had a pick up order. The meal also came with a pickle and they had wrapped it up in paper before putting it in the box with the sandwich. I was very impressed with that because it showed that they really care about the quality of their food in to go orders! Little details like that really make all the difference. The staff was very incredibly friendly and had my food ready as soon as I arrived. Also, the pasta salad was AMAZING! On recent day trip to Columbia we timed our drive into town to do a pit stop at Zachs for a lunchtime feed. The place was easy to find, parking was at a premium and wait lines grew longer around 12 Noon (we landed around 11:45) so time your visit accordingly. Daily blue plate specials are often on the mind of regulars (we saw 6 go for the chicken pot pie and 2 sides) as well as a long list of namesake sandwiches and for those who fear nothing a build your own option is on the table. Seating is plentiful with a sparkling clean atmosphere. The servers there reminded me of one of my family reunions when my aunts used to plate up the T-giving lunch for 30, gracious, good natured and a smile on their hearts. We opted for sandwiches (which came with a side of choosing), homemade pink lemonade and tea (sweet & no sweet) were pouring freely. I opted to build by own sandwich and went with a hot pastrami on rye, swiss, lettuce, tomato w/mustard & add a pink lemonade, tasted great and it was so filling I had a takeaway. The dill pickle came with, I opted for the sea salt chips feeling the crunch need. My copilot went for one of the special sandwiches the Zack Attack with a side of potato salad and a Coke. What an AWESOME sandwich shop I did not want Subway and googled sandwich shops near me Zacks came up never heard of them, I called ordered the Egg Salad, Gyro, Tuna Melt, had a brownie and pound cake, the sandwiches were so good fresh and you can taste that everything was home made the brownie didn't make it back to USA Supercenter, but they got lucky and I gave them the pound cake I will be a regular! read more

I love this little sandwich shop. I think they have some of the best lunch options in town. My personal favorite is the tuna melt, and I love that I can get it with deviled eggs. I stopped in here with a coworker while in the area for a work training. It was a little difficult to locate, but it was definitely worth the trip. I love that it is decorated in a dog theme because I am such a dog lover! It was a quaint little place, but it looked well maintained. We finally got around to eating at Zach's. We were certainly pleased. Everyone was nice and helpful. They were especially good with our daughters. I had the Big Behr, which was really good. The au jus that came with it made it a great sandwich. My wife had the Lucy Goosey, which was also good. Our two-year-old had the blue plate special - spaghetti - which was good. Our seven-year-old had a grilled cheese, which had thick bread slices. The iced tea was good, but no sure if you can have refills. The restaurant was clean and tidy. The atmosphere was cozy and laid back. Overall, we enjoyed Zach's! read more

Stumbled upon this hidden gem while visiting my chiropractor! Such a lucky find and I've been for lunch 2 days in a row! The ladies are super nice, the tea is perfect and the food is as excellent as anything you might find down in the vista or 5 points! There was something weird (but in a good way) about this place, I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it's because it was behind a building, kind of near an auto body shop... really tucked away. But I'm glad I found it! The place was clean. The service was great. I ordered something I wouldn't normally order: the tuna melt. We stopped by looking for something unbattered, unfried, and ungreasy (not that any of those elements are bad - in fact, in the South they have made them into culinary artforms - but age has its limitations). After a short meander from the highway, we discovered this little place tucked between a couple of religious buildings, including a small church. Somewhat oddly, outdoor speakers pointed away from the restaurant serenaded us with old country tunes as we entered. Though it was almost closing time, the two women working there couldn't have been more welcoming, and we were soon tucking into the type of sandwich that brings sustinance to both your soul and stomach. I had a straight out BLT and it was great - perfect bread and bacon freshly made. My wife had a pimento cheese sandwich that reintroduced her to a flavor not commonly found in the northern climes to which I have dragged her. Our kids also enjoyed their sandwiches, my son enjoying his chicken salad. My daughter took advantage of Zach's make-your-own. We finished the meal off with a slice of delicious pecan butter cake that apparently is homemade by an 82-year old cake boss. Respect. Lastly - and importantly for a road stop - Zach's is a clean and open space. They won an award offered by a local news channel for having a 100% health inspection report card. I figured my review needed an update since this is my new favorite lunch spot. I have slowly been working my way through the blue plate specials and have yet to find one I don't like. I started following them on Facebook so I would know the daily special so I would know what day of the week I want to eat here. So far I have tried the Chicken Pot Pie, Spaghetti, and Chicken and Dumplings. They are all delicious and you can tell they are made from scratch. I had no idea this little sandwich shop was down the street from where I worked until one of my coworker came back from lunch talking about it. My review of this restaurant might be a little bias because I love dogs and the restaurant is themed after a German Shepard. The menu isn't crazy big so I decided on the Big Club with their special sauce. The special sauce really reminded me of the 45 formula at Grouchos so it was great! The best part of the lunch experience was looking around the dining area at all the pictures customers had left behind of their own dogs. The reviews are true- this place is a gem! A friend and I stopped by for lunch today and apparently (and luckily) just missed the lunch crowd. I had the special (chicken and dumplings) and it was awesome, homemade and delicious. My buddy got the Loosey Goosey (her usual) and couldn't have been happier.
