Didn't get the poppy seed bun, the hotdog was small and toppings were skimpy, the bun was half hard and stale, and got charged more than the advertised website price. On Sunday Feb.16,2020 Several folks at tables, one guy behind counter, ordered simple plain hot dog, noticed three folks at table near me that were waiting on order, my dog came after 20 minutes, had my beer and dog, finally the three people at table just got up and left as they hadn't received their order yet! I emailed the biz directly in an effort to bypass leaving a sh*tty yelp review, but they never responded, so... This place is well and good. I've been visiting Zach's since it was a shack. The other evening I went in with my friend and saw the employees treating the place like their pre-school club house. They were drinking (which is fine), throwing stuff, moshing, mooning each other & one of them kicked over a coffee table on their way out the door. A punk ethos is cool and all, but adults in a professional environment should behave as such. If I witnessed my employees disrespecting my business like that I'd cut off their dreads, turn their music down, wash their clothes & have them take a bath. I imagine this is their first and only "big kid" job. Aside from the young lady working I couldn't imagine these blokes putting together a middle school bird house, let alone doing anything with their lives. They all definitely subscribe to the: "every time a I have a cheap beer fart a Shane MacGowan gets his wings" school of thought. Actually, they're likely all too stupid to be cool enough to fancy The Pogues, but they are a solid research group for a longitudinal cirrhosis study! Gave a 5 star review because f**k Yelp. We ended up finding this place when looking for a trivia night. We went to the 8pm trivia on Thursday. Free to enter and I believe if you win you get free hot dogs (clearly we didn't win!). The trivia lasted about 2 hours and the place was packed for it. I recommend going early to get a seat and your drinks ahead of time. They have a full menu of all different types of hot dogs including vegan and gluten free options (on the pricey end $4 or more for a hot dog)... Happy hour is from 3-5pm (not sure why it's so early?) This place is really great. Everything is very fresh and well made. Sometimes you'll go to a restaurant and you'll get a bunch of food at different times and different temperatures. What do you do when the drink of the day is a shot of Jack and a tall boy of PBR? You order it! We came here after eating at Por Que No? so we were just in it for drinks. Except one friend which was running late. She got a brat (hot dog) without the bun. I guess that's what they are known for. It looked tasty, with it's sauerkraut and fixings - but I feel a dog needs a bun. Her bad for dieting. The nice surprise was the patio out back (covered and uncovered). My friends that still smoke liked that they could smoke in the lower level, and not have to go out front. They also have ping pong out back and outdoor seating out front for people watching. I loved the mural on one wall out back so much, I insisted we get a group photo in front of it. Not that it takes a twist of the arm for me to take a photo. The bartender was friendly and helpful and got all of our drinks to us quickly. That is rare for a Hipster neighborhood like this. Great little divey hot dog shack. We come here Thursday's for their ShanRocks trivia nights. Even though they can be overwhelmed at times by the crowds, the staff never stops being kind and courteous. As dog prices around this city have reached astronomical heights, (i'm looking at you OPWurst) Zach's Shack remains the dog shack for everyone, and not just the people that can afford a $12 hot dog. Don't let the modest prices fool you though, these dogs are damn good and their signature dogs are excellent. Personally, I am a New York Dog with an upgrade to the Red Hot man. If none of the signature dogs speak to you, there is the option to build you own. On top of that, they have nearly every condiment know to man so you can customize it further. After coming into Portland from a night flight, we were starving and wanted something fast! I'm not sure if I was just starving or their hotdogs are just very godly. Warning: the portion size is a normal hot dog size. Usually one hot dog isn't too filling for me. Initially I ordered one, and before I knew it, the hot dog was completely gone and had me wanting for more. My first hot dog was a Chicago dog. It consists of pickles, relish, and actual tomato slices. It was very simple and delicious. My next hot dog was my favorite: it was the james brown. THEIR CHILI. If you're conflicted on what to order, order something with chill in it. Yes, it will be messy, but completely worth it. Overall, the price is very fair. The Hot dog is something that can either be a quick hit commercial fully stuffed passing as meat hot dog that you can certainly get at any ball park or hot dog food cart or.....or it can be a quality dog topped with good eats that makes it more of a meal than a snack. It also allows you to go for it and build your own. I think the choices they provide allow you to get the full experience. My youngest kid went with a basic hot dog to build her own. Not very risky but the dog was so good she asked for another. Earning Zach's their 4th star. If you can get her to eat a double you must really be serving up some good hot dogs. I guess that Zachs used to be a cart somewhere and graduated to a restaurant. It just is the feel of the place. A back yard if you will that promotes a hang out ambiance. Ping pong table for a little competition and promotes you sticking around and having another beer and or hot dog before you move on. This is located in an up and coming area of Hawthorne I say that because the closer to downtown part of Hawthorne has well run out of space. There is almost no parking and walking area is still being torn up and updated. This area has all that. Newer wider sidewalks and some other restaurants anchoring the area. Its okay to migrate away from the city leave some of the on the sidewalk crowd and just have your own space. Great hang out. Plenty of TVs on with multiple sports being covered. Its not a posh hangout but a great place for you and the boys or your serious girl to go and be comfortable. So, why not 5 stars you may ask? Well lets start with the buns. Can you say out of the plastic bag air literally no taste air buns. I mean if you are going to serve a quality dog a least give it a place to rest worthy of the quality. Maybe half a star loss here. Then combine that with the Ore Ida ish crinkle fries. Maybe they are going for the keep Portland weird vibe there but again frozen fries dont earn you any bonus points in my book. Especially when every one well almost everyone has made the move to fresh cut fries a long time ago. Your probably saying why did you order again well to give them the benefit of doubt. I know, I know, a lot of people discount a one star review and I generally agree. My wife and I drove out to Zach's on a Sunday afternoon looking for something resembling a Vienna beef hot dog. We knew Zach's did not serve Vienna, but a brand called Chicago Red Hots which supposedly are made in the same factory as Vienna, so we decided to give them a try. Zach's is a Hawthorne neighborhood bar open late into the night featuring hot dogs dressed in a wide variety of permutations and combinations along with an impressive number of beers. There were bar games inside and a fairly nice outdoor seating area behind the bar. There was one employee working. Bartender, order taker, cook wrapped up in one somewhat friendly, possibly stoned male. We asked about how the dogs were prepared. A true Chicago dog is boiled while the buns sit in a steamer to get soft and hot. He told us the hot dogs were boiled and then finished off on the grill so we ordered and found two seats on the patio to wait for our food. One bite and it was obvious the hot dog was not cooked. It was in fact still cold on the inside. I took these sad uncooked dogs back into the bar and called over our bartender, order taker, cook. He asked what was wrong and I said, "These hot dogs are still cold on the inside, we can't eat them." His response was, "Ewww, I'll make you another one." Draw your own conclusions. read more

Zach's is a roadside dive bar that fell straight out of a long country road and smack into hipster central of Portland's bustling food scene. And it's fucking awesome. ~$9 nets you a killer hot dog, fries and a drink. Mind you, these aren't fancy brats or gourmet wild boar sausages (which I love), but plain and simple HOT DOGS. Delicious, and in my case, covered in chili and cheese. The fries are crinkle cut - of course - and there's an actual CD jukebox churning out 90's gold in the corner. It's nu-retro? There's a ton of great food in Portland, and everyone everywhere seems to have some angle on being fresh, local, organic and more. So it's refreshing to find a joint that simply doesn't give a wag about any of that. read more

"Hot" dog was right! Zach's was suffering from a lack of A/C today, I pity the fool working in the kitchen. Zach's offers a variety of pre-dressed dogs, or buy 'em plain ($3.00) and design your own. Zach's menu says " Zach's Shack Hot Dogs are All beef dogs with a natural casing." (sic). I took a plain and decorated it with dill relish (25 cents), a pickle spear (another 25 cents), and yellow mustard (free). I am really into hot dogs and this place has a good amount of options for all your hot dog desires. They use the big skinny hot dogs which is a personal favorite. The menu says they steam them but mine had grill marks. There were drunks inside slamming Jell-O shots on a weekday afternoon which was kind of weird and some people studying on their laptops. It was like two opposite types of people in one environment and only me getting down on hot dogs at a hot dog establishment. Clearly I was the one winning in this situation because Jell-O shots are gross. Cream cheese and sour cream on hot dogs is what's up and this place has a few different dogs with sour cream or cream cheese options. Good combinations using my two favorite toppings! The Chicago dog didn't have a steamed poppy seed bun and probably not the famous Vienna beef dog but it gets an A for almost accomplishing a traditional Chicago dog on the west coast. read more

I think a good review looks at all of the aspects of a place, not just one particular menu item that you wouldn't expect the place to specialize in (i.e. a veggie dog), a broken down air conditioner, or an unfortunate music selection. On the whole, Zach's had a lot of things going for it the night I visited. First off any meat-centric menu in Portland to me deserves recognition. Not everything in this city needs to be a vegan tofu loaf. And to take this a step further, let's salute tube meats in general. What a great invention... a favorite of mine since childhood. I liked the ambiance of Zach's. It had a definite hole in the wall feel to it, and it seemed very small. The lighting was cool, seating was ample, and it seemed relatively clean. The music from the CD jukebox was all over the place and kind of loud, but conversations were still possible. The menu was about as interesting and varied as one can make a hotdog, plus it gave you the option of creating your own. For a first time it was a little daunting to know what to choose. I settled on a comfortable chili dog selection with a large coke. No rootbeer on draft that I could see, but at least the soda was presented in a big glass. The dog was pretty good, I have probably had better chili dogs in the span of my 84 years, but I would definitely eat here again (probably trying something more exotic). I applaud their liberal use of cheese, but they need to melt it down for more effectiveness. We were in on a Saturday night and still managed to find seating. I like that. You order at the bar for food and drinks which does create a bit of a bottleneck, that would probably be my one complaint of Zach's. I'm already tired of hardly any place in Portland having table service. I think people will order more stuff if you have a server out there taking their orders. Food came out quickly, and the guy at the bar was friendly, no complaints there. I also hear they are open until 3am every night? That's an oddity in this town, but definitely pretty cool. Seeing as how the standard veggie dog tastes something along the lines of moist cardboard, I'd probably give Zach's four stars if I were an omnivore as opposed to a measly herbivore. I hear they have excellent hot dogs. The real kind, I mean. The prices are agreeable, averaging $4 a dog. And they come with all sorts of adorned names. I had the Los Lobos, which includes sour cream, jalapenos, cheese, and olives. It wasn't bad, nor was it phenomenal. Though half of it did end up ricocheting off of my belly and onto the ground. The krinkle cut fries were pretty good. I enjoyed them while watching a heated ping pong game out on the back patio. Yes, ping pong. Free ping pong. Sweet glory, what a sight. They have ping pong competitions there weekly. Sundays, you can play the oldschool Ms Pacman console for free. And they also have a trivia night. It's supposedly a staple of the Beermuda Triangle neighborhood. But more of a ghost town on Sunday afternoons. The two employees I ran into weren't exactly ecstatic to service me, but nor were they Igors.
