Moon Pocha had been on my list for quite some time. I happened to be in the neighborhood one day, spotted the place, and immediately decided it was going to be my next meal out. And I kept that promise to myself. When we arrived, we were fortunate enough to find a table even though the place was packed. The seating isn't the most comfortable, especially for a format like this where you're likely to have multiple plates and dishes covering the table. Navigating around the table and squeezing in and out was a bit challenging, but thankfully we managed without spilling anything.The food, however, more than made up for it. We tried several different dishes and loved every single one. The dry-rubbed lamb was fantastic, and the tteokbokki was equally delicious. Service was good, and the food came out fairly quickly. For drinks, we tried the chamisul, which paired nicely with the meal. Another major plus is that they're open fairly late. There are always those nights after bar hopping when you're suddenly looking for somewhere serving good food well into the night, and this definitely feels like a place I'll be adding to my go-to list from now on. read more

I really have been enjoying this place recently. I love their fried chicken, it's crispy and moist. I always get the kimchi, it's delicious. The mandoo are pretty good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the silken tofu even though I love a silken tofu dish. The menu is kind of interesting with somethings like the tofu pita. I feel it's random, but it doesn't hinder the experience. The service is pretty good and the people are nice enough. I love that their open late and it's a cool vibe. This place is goated. It is open late night and serves a full menu. We ordered so many items, basically the whole menu and there wasn't one dish that disappointed us. Everything was very good. This place really subverted my expectations! As someone who is more familiar with mom-and-pop Korean spots, I wasn't sure if their fancier take on Korean dishes would hit but they actually do an amazing job. Everything we got was flavorful. You can taste the high quality ingredients in the dishes. My least favorite thing was surprisingly the Fried Chicken. It's good in the Chili Maple and Soy Galbi sauces but I've had better. The Spicy Teokbokki though...The best version I've had. Their fish cakes were next level. The Gochujang sauce was also super balance and punchy. 10/10. We came here for Valentine's Day, no reservations but we were 3rd in line so sat down quickly. The place filled up quickly but service was prompt and our server was very attentive. The ambiance was good, definitely elevated casual. Food ordered: Tteokbokki - 9/10, perfectly chewy rice cakes, sauce was spicy and good consistency, and I'm not usually a fan of the fish cakes but these were delicious! Korean fried chicken - 8.5/10, ordered the soy garlic flavor. Good crunch on the outside and the sauce was flavorful. Beef Bulgogi - 6/10, this was probably my least favorite dish, the beef was a little tough and the flavor was too mild for my taste. Would pass on it next time. Disclaimer: Maybe this was just an off day. I came here with a friend and pretty high expectations. Food: Beef Bulgogi Bowl (1/5) I love bulgogi, so this was disappointing. The broth had almost no flavor, and the beef was really tough, like it had been overcooked. I also tried some of the kimchi my friend ordered. It was much too spicy for my taste, though someone who likes very spicy food might enjoy it. Service: Fair. They ended up comping a dish that my friend didn't like, which we appreciated. Came in for a nice Friday night dinner. Be warned, the music was loud! It felt like a tourist destination on spring break, even though it was the middle of winter. Not really my vibe. The terrible pop music was blaring loud, other than that the environment was nice. We had to wait a bit for a table for two so we just went to Holman's down the street for a pre-dinner drink. After about a 30' wait we ended up ordering the radish kimchi, jap-chae, and the 'lil' fire chicken along with a bottle of soju and beer to share. I liked the concept of the soju/beer Korean sharing culture as something new to try. As for the food - we loved the jap-chae! It was the best thing we ate. The radish kimchi was good, but beware if you can't handle much spice. It was a good appetizer but not for those with who are cautious of spicy foods. The chicken with corn was 'meh'. It was just a little bland. I think maybe the corn cheese just kinda took over the show, which to me was not particularly flavorful. I loved Korean Momma's Moon Pocha's reel and as usual I had to bookmark to check it out. We were on our way back from Seattle and so glad Moon Pocha had a late closing time. We found street parking around the block and walked in the freezing cold PDX weather. Moon Pocha is Portland's newest Korean pub-style restaurant located on NE 28th Avenue, they serve up authentic Korean style street food which includes Tteokbokki, Korean fried chicken, along with grilled pork belly/Bossam. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, which was about 11 pm, got a table right away and from seeing a few other Moon Pocha reels I had an idea of what I wanted to try, I went with my faves. Moon Pocha has a very hip, fun & inviting atmosphere. Our waitress ( forgot her name, moved from SF) was super cool, it was nice chatting with her, after we got our orders in and before we left. Our orders were Army stew, Jap-Chae and Creamy basil chicken. I think rice was unlimited servings but I am not sure if it is unlimited. We had our share of rice servings because it was so hard not to have rice with all this food, hehe. The only junk part is here at Moon Pocha, they don't provide ban chan, which I do miss this at a Korean spot! The food was good, enjoyed by us, but I do regret not ordering what the Korean Momma had. The creamy basil was interesting but good, first time I tried this style, the Jap Chae was on the sweeter side, which is fine since I miss eating this dish and the Army stew was yummy even though it was a simple dish to make! The restaurant is good for a group less than six people because they are pretty small. I think this is the best for date night. We sat in the back corner with a good view of some Korean posters on the wall. For food, we got a few soups and stews. The black cod shrimp was like a sweeter oden, with great daikon and crispy skinned cod surrounded by some shrimp. The japchae was perfect in texture and flavor. The fried chicken - we split it between gochujang and soy galbi flavors - was perfectly crisp and tender. The udon had a great fish based broth. Walked in on a random Friday, lucked out and got seated right away. Inside is nicely decorated and has tons of smaller tables (2-4 person tables) but they only do reservations for bigger groups. The tteokboki was good, just your traditional chewy rice cakes and fish cakes. The spicy pork was decent too but the veggie-to-pork ratio was off with way too many veggies and the seasoning didn't shine through as much. I was a bit disappointed because they didn't offer banchan or anything, and I didn't mind paying for premium banchan if it was worth. Ended up ordering the kimchi. Kimchi was mad salty (very fish sauce forward?) so make sure you order rice to balance out the saltiness. The service was ok but apparently it was someone's birthday so service was a bit slow. The waitress apologized and comped us free kimchi, so it was nice of her. We also had to ask for water. This place is pretty spendy for small portions of decent food and drinks. Portland is not a hotbed for Korean cuisine (#1), which makes Moon Pocha immediately appealing and a welcome addition to the NE scene. Their debut from earlier this year has resulted in serious following, giving rise to more Asian options in an otherwise hipstery neighborhood. After a recent night of bar hopping along this strip, my group and I wanted to keep the night going and made Moon the dinner destination that I won't soon forget. When I think of a pocha (#2) type scene, I'm imagining a late night spot with dimmed lights, old school KPop ballads music blasting in the background, with lots of anju-style foods being served in family style portions, with lots of flavored soju, drinking games, and endless *geonbae* cheers. While Moon has some element of this happening, it's hardly a traditional pocha. While it's been modded for the local scene, I'm a firm believer that any introduction is a good thing. The wait was around an hour, which meant more time for pre-dinner drinks and less waiting outside in the rain. Once the table was ready, I received a text and a phone call. The ambiance was busy and seating as manageable, without feeling too tight. Some initial curveballs included ordering Korean food with a non-Korean staff for the first time and being told banchan was a singular "featured" item for purchase, which is atypical but memorable no less. Pocha dining is all about sharing, which meant I ordered as many dishes as my small'ish table could handle. The end result was solid representation of the menu and what felt more like a Korean tapas experience than the larger pocha spreads that I've been spoiled by previously. While the portions were understandably modest, the good news was that the flavor for most everything was on point. We started off with some flavored apple soju and meokgolli, which the latter is my favorite thing in the pocha experience. While I long for fruit based soju (#3), this is not something in their arsenal (yet). Cucumber Mu Chim (오이무침 - $7) made for a nice crunchy starter, in which the mustard dressing and sesame oil paired well with the red radish. The Fried Chicken (뼈없는 치킨 - $15) was a nice boneless KFC style fried chicken covered in either gochujang, galbi soy, or creamy basil. The galbi soy did not disappoint. Odeng-Tang (꼬치어묵 - $14) consists of 4 fish cake skewers in sitting in an anchovy dashi broth with a house soy sauce. The end of the skewer was a fish ball, which felt a bit like eating hot pot ingredients but was tasty no less. Army Stew (부대찌개 - $18) i.e. budaejiggae is an essential in all pocha dining experiences. While the portion was a bit more on the personal size I did appreciate the semi-generous pilings of the kimchi, spam, bits of sausage and pork shoulder, along with solid chunks of tofu. Given everything we had ordered, this was not inherently a bad thing. Lil Fire Chicken (콘 치즈 불닭 - $18) was basically corn cheese buldak, which was a chicken thighs in a gochujang marinade over cheese gunked corn. While I'm no spice lord, I didn't find the spice to be overwhelming at all. This is one of the more pocha style comfort dishes that I tend to enjoy in large quantities. Black Snapper Gui (흑돔구이 - $21) was probably the most skippable dish of everything we ordered. While the black snapper filet had a nice crisp, the roasted garlic butter wasn't as detectable as I would have hoped. The mushroom medley was somewhat underwhelming, but the fish itself was solid but the portions weren't too substantial. Unsurprisingly, the best part of the meal was actually the staff. Our server, Chelsea, was bubbly, warm, and enthusiastic throughout the meal. She was as attentive as a server could be while injecting a lot of quality recommendations from start to finish. Chef Moon was also very attentive and offered my table a sampling of the some of their whiskey from their very active full bar. Lastly, the hostess, Chef Moon's wife, was welcoming and extremely sweet to my group and I. The staff alone is why I foresee a return trip in the near future. If there was half, I'd give it 3 1/2. Wanted to try this new Korean bar food place. I guess I'm too old school because while the food was ok, it was just ok. The duk bok gi was decent, the cucumbers were crunchy but lacked flavor and I've had better kfc chicken. The kimchi jigae was decent but nothing was really outstanding taste wise. The dishes are small so you have to order a few per person. The restaurant is really cute, loud and happening. I think this is a vibe place. The service was good, friendly. A friend was really excited to try this new place, and I was excited to join him. The menu has some tasty sounding items and it's a type of cuisine I'm excited to support any time I can. We got on the waiting list, then grabbed a drink nearby. They texted when the table was ready. Our table was the first one next to the door, which was fine but given all the traffic in and out of the place, the cold air wasn't super fun. Another table even asked to move at one point. Not their fault, but bring a coat if the weather isn't warm. The ambiance is cozy, and the service was good. Food came out really quickly. The food was good, but not mind blowing. Their spicy cold noodle was just the perfect chaser especially because it was filled with pollack, radish, and bok choy. Their Korean fried chicken was also a great pairing with their noodles and drinks. We were circling around Beaverton looking for late night dinner after we failed to secure a spot at Wok n Guys, and I remembered seeing a post on social media mentioning Moon Pocha is open late. We called to check on wait times and although they were slammed, the person on the phone was so kind and put us down for a table as long as we could get there in 30 mins. We high tailed it into downtown Portland and made it just in time! I love that the Army Stew is a smaller portion. Not everyone wants to share in a giant pot of Army Stew... the KFC was flavorful and not too greasy, but some pieces had some heavy breading. Pickles were great and I appreciate the variety of veg used. Can't go wrong with corn and cheese, and the Soju was a pretty good value compared to what I pay in Seattle.
