Geez, this had to be the worst visit ever at Frankie's Here the place was hopping, people were happy, was it me? Met a friend here for a quick bite to eat. My friend ordered a cheeseburger, the small one, with lettuce and tomato on it, along with I think a lemonade I took a chance on the special which was loaded french fries. Steak fries with cheese whiz, bacon bits, sour cream and a little bit of chives. I also ordered a Pepsi. The bill came to $22 and change for the two of us. Keep that in mind as I further write. The cheeseburger, the quarter pound one, included one little little slice of lettuce and a very thin slice of tomato. The beef on the cheeseburger looked gray, and pink inside like it wasn't even cooked up to temperature. This was absolutely gross, served on a non toasted Sesame seed roll. He thought it was awful. He ate half of it. Now for my loaded french fries.... The french fries were so soggy , that if they didn't look like french fries they could be mistaken for mashed potatoes, loaded with an extremely salty cheese whiz, and what looked like bacon bits instead of natural bacon on top, chives, and sour cream. It would've been nice if there was chili on this instead, but nope. For $7.99, the serving was extremely small, probably good for a six-year-old. Barely edible, I ate about a quarter of it and just pushed it aside saying I'm done. I can't even imagine the salt content that was in this. I know one thing for sure it was extremely high! First time visit recently. Had 2 hot dogs. Prices of 5.69 for each are on point. Overall, very average quality. The long, skinny dogs were tasteless. The chili topping was appealing, but tasteless. The pepper and onions were tasteless. As a cook, I believe that the quality of the ingredients you use is evidenced in the ultimate outcome of a lunch or dinner. Small place with alot going on inside, nice decor and lively staff that were quick to take my order. Good took about 8 minutes after I placed my order and they called my number. Ordered the Monday burger and a side of waffle fries which brought my total to about 18 bucks. Fries were very nicely cooked, just a small portion for a side order. During the Great Depression, two brothers pooled family money, bought an empty lot in Waterbury, convinced a lumber yard to give them lumber on credit, built a restaurant, then persuaded a meat purveyor and local bakery to create extra-long hot dogs and rolls. Business boomed and they opened a second location in 1941. Today, they have six locations across Connecticut. We visited their Plainville location yesterday and had a very enjoyable lunch. Our first order of business was deciding what we'd order, because their menu is quite deep. The menu is broken down into groupings, things like Specialties (chicken, chili, etc.), Hot Dogs, Sandwiches (Burgers, BLT, Grilled Cheese), Seafood (fried fish, shrimp, clams, scallops, grilled fish and a lobster roll), Salads, Sides (fries, rings, fried veggies, and more), and six kids meals. Fried food dominates, and I laughed when I saw a sign at the front of the store that proclaimed in no uncertain terms "It Ain't Food If It Ain't Fried". My wife ordered a regular hot dog, I ordered a scallop roll, and we split an order of Waffle Fries. We were pleasantly surprised that our cashier voluntarily gave us a 10% Senior Citizen discount, (a perk of my graying hair I suppose). A fountain drink and tax brought our discounted cost to a super reasonable $26.17. Frankies has a condiment bar where you can add as much sauerkraut, ketchup, chopped onions, and three kinds of relish as your little heart desires. I loved the scallop roll- a big mound of breaded and fried bay scallops piled on a toasted and buttered hot dog roll. I asked for cocktail sauce with it and a small, prepackaged container was on my tray when our number was called. The scallop roll was excellent. So were the waffle fries, a pretty big portion of golden-brown crunchy fries -easily enough to share. I doctored mine up with some of the condiment bar ketchup and onions and loved it. I didn't mooch any of the hot dog, but my wife gave it a glowing report. What a cool place. If you love old school comfort food served without a hint of pretension, Frankies is for you. read more

We also ordered two orders of their steak fries. The hot dogs are long and thin. They stick out from the buns. I guess that is supposed to be their signature look. They did taste good. I added yellow mustard and onions to my plain dog and onions to my chili dog. The chili on the dog, while not bad tasting, was reminiscent of something out of a can. The steak fries were good. Working in the area and needed somewhere nearby to grab lunch and this restaurant came up on my Google search. The menu was interesting and had options that seems delicious and affordable. Not much parking is available in the designated parking lot but there is street parking. Inside is wonderfully decorated with pictures and quotes on the wall and a very quiet and cozy atmosphere. Thought it would be busier for lunch but there were no lines and the cashier was ready to take our order. My coworkers and I ordered the fried shrimp plate, the fried clams, Cesar salad, and some fish and chips. To our surprise for such a small restaurant the food was extremely good. Even though my fried shrimp was a little over-fried and crispy, my roll was a little over toasted it was still good. The fries were extra hot like they just came out of the oil. Several years ago my husband would go to get takeout dogs from Frankie's, he would order them with the works and come home with dogs loaded with all kinds of toppings. Just recently he went to get our takeout dogs and came home with plain dogs, long and skinny, buns kind of dry. Also in his bag were multiple tiny containers of toppings. Apparently they no longer fix the dogs for you, you must do your own. I think the dogs have slipped and obviously so has the service. We will go elsewhere for dogs, that's for sure. It is already crazy enough to take the word "Gourmet" and place it before "Fast Food" but here we are with Frankie's doing just that. I do suppose that it is time to really get a better understanding of Fast Food in this light. I went with a few options spoken of in previous reviews on Yelp, just to see if anything changed. My curiosity over their Rib Eye Steak Sandwich, lead me to a place where I never thought I would see Steak that missed "leg day" at the gym. The bread itself had more "oomph" and thickness going on, whereas the steak itself, resembled a steak-umm. Very frail and extremely thin but I took a bite anyway and yes, the bread had more bite than the rib eye but the rib eye wasn't horrible. It just needed to be thicker with some fat to carry it through. It was practically invisible, if we are being honest but let us continue on this gourmet path...... They went hard on the boulevard when it come to my portion of clam strips!! They weren't gritty, as some restaurants lack the proper cleaning of their clams and they weren't overly greasy nor soggy as if they had been sitting in old oil for far too long, just absorbing up liquid depression. My clam strips were actually decent with a nice lightly fried bite to them but unfortunately, the taste on the tartar sauce was just bad overall. Tart indeed and not really chunky, more creamy with a mixture of forgotten love. The steak fries below my clam strips were nice and hot! Salted up with a great bite to them. Potatoes had that fresh cut taste and so far, so good with this dish. Now my hot dog? I had them add America Cheese and Bacon and so the saltiness was expected. I found it to be flavorful, even though it lacked some girth; it was one of those hot dogs that could fall under a long dog, extending beyond the buttery toasted bun, that truly enhanced the flavor here and satisfied the hungry beast within. Even my bacon was well done with wild crunch and the dog had a nice little snap to it! What else can you ask for? I didn't even have to drown the hot dog in any ketchup to help it out. However, my wings flew away! Almost as if they were boiled wings...the chicken itself just wasn't as tender and the skin didn't have that lightly crispy bite...just a tougher pull at the end of the day. Gourmet Fast Food? Just had lunch at Frankie's. Had the pulled pork sandwich, some steak fries, and a shake. It was excellent. Definitely going back.

The lowly hotdog can often be dismissed nothing more than junk food served hot; but, no, I tell you! With the right ingredients, in hands of a master, the hot lowly dog is a work of art. With that being said, when I think of hot dogs in Connecticut, there are a select few places that immediately come to mind, due in very large part to word of mouth reputation. Frankies is one of them; that until now, I had not experienced. So, I stopped by, quite by chance having been in the area. I noted that indoor dining was available; but being a pleasant day, I opted to order from the window and eat on the patio, rather than go inside. Be advised that the staff was fully masked, gloved, friendly and attentive. From what I could see of the inside patrons, social distancing was in play. Now, on to the menu. At the top of the list were, you guessed it, hot dogs. There was an impressive list, featuring "I talian", "French" (is a courdon bleu hot dog possible!!??) and my choice, "Irish". Visions of corned beef hash and mild cabbage topping a foot long dog filled my head. Or, mabey Shepards pie variation, srerved on toasted bun! (You see where I was going with the "work of art thing now, don't you?). Having chosen the Irish, with a side of onion rings, I waited for no more than three minutes for my meal. What I got was a foot long, or close to it, on a toasted bun that was just shy of the dog's length on either end, with a single strip of bacon on top. Now, my knowledge of Irish cuisine is limited; but, try as I did, I couldn't connect bacon to the Emerald Isle. But, I was there to eat so... Ant hot dog connosuer will tell you the mark of a quality dog is "snap". "Snap" indicates texture, which is the best way I know to define it. I soon realized that if I wanted "snap" I would have to place my thumb to my finger and move them in opposite directions. But, "how did it taste?" you ask. Well, you know that off brand of hot dogs that you find at the supermarket, at half the price of the name brands, that turns out to be balony in a casing? It was somewhat reminescent of that. Having been a fan of Frankie's growing up in Bristol I was a little sad to see it move to Southington. The location a little hard to get to and hard to park at is an upgrade to the pot holes and RT 6 of Bristol. They have a larger restaurant forgoing the small order window for a open counter that can sometimes make it hard to have conversations or order since you can hear everything in their raised space. There is much more ample seating with a separate section for larger crowds. I also spotted an outdoor area that will open up in the summer time with a take out window. No more drive thru. I've always been a fan of their clam strip with fries Cole slaw and garlic bread. Didn't get the whole thing but got an order of clam strips. I'll have to see how the full order is but the strips sadly arent the same as before. Being very flaky you arent getting a nice balance of the fried and the clam. Small thing but having it for years makes me feel some kind of way. You'll always have a fan in me. 3 stars is best you can expect here. The average review is pretty spot on. This place used to be in Bristol and moved to Plainville. As for food it's OK at best. Fast food maybe a slight grade up from McDonalds or Burger King. I've had the Chili Dog. Decent. I'd rather do Capital Lunch or Blackies in Cheshire. The burger is decent. Prob the better of the two. I would say get the steak fries with either. The thing here is you put mostly your own toppings on and to be honest it doesn't seem most sanitary. I've seen older men picking at their face touching pickle spoons and other condiments etc at the condiment stations and it's not appealing. That's a bit of a turnoff. Also the staff isn't the friendliest either. This is one of those places... you could do better but also a lot worse. Tip, try the medium hot sweet relish. Went in for lunch time, not many people and very spacious. I ordered the seafood combo with whole belly clams. Did not have to wait long for my meal to be called. The quality of the meal was no where near what i was anticipating on it being, I will not get this meal again. The batter tasted as if it was not seasoned at all, the fish was dry and the scallops had so much batter on them that 2 didn't even have a bay scallop in it. I went and asked for extra lemons and the counter persons reply was "For what"... then yelled in back and slammed down the plastic container with 1 half lemon wedge. By this time I'm just like whatever !!! I'll just not return here again. Only GREAT part about my experience was that the whole belly clams were juicy. Mid way thru my meal a gentleman came in and sat in the booth across from me who stated that he was hungry and haven't eaten in a couple days. He asked if I was going to finish my meal I informed him that I wasn't and he was more then welcome to have it. Decided to order from Frankie's because I do frequent there often and with the COVID-19 going on I thought I'd be supportive and support a local restaurant well when I walked in to pick up my order it was five workers there four of them did not not have a mask on one did. No gloves either. I did pay for my food and leave but my tossed food directly into the trash will not be eating there ever again following this visit. Shortly after my first review I got a reply from the owner who said that all concerns are taken seriously, changes are being made and he would like me to come back and try them again. Well it took 7 months, but last night I was in the area at dinner time so I stopped. Yes, changes were made and it is better. My soda was much more drink than ice & there is now warm sauerkraut out on the counter with a bunch of other complimentary relishes and toppings. I believe that they have added a second kind of spicy relish as well. The chili tasted a bit different than other Frankie's, like a bit of a clove flavor, I actually liked it better. Reminds me of the famous place in New Britain that calls it "sauce". My wife had the chicken strip plate and really liked it. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was still very neat and clean, just like when they first opened. The only downside, and the only reason I'm changing my rating from 2 stars to 4 and not 5, is that I still think they are somewhat pricier than other locations. Maybe this nicely renovated building is costing an arm and a leg to stay open? Wouldn't surprise me. The 4 star rating sums it up, "Yay! I'm a fan". Afterthought: Saw other reviews that said the staff was rude (ie. ignoring customers, mumbling comments, slamming down containers...) The staff that we experienced was friendly, polite and smiling from the time we walked in the door until the time we left. When I went back to the counter to ask for a "to go" container I was given one with a smile, and nicely asked if the size was OK or if I needed a bigger one. Prior to this a family was there letting a very young boy fill ketchup containers and he was getting it all over the counter. A staff person (young girl) saw this and came over with towels to clean up. She had a smile, was being very nice and did not make one off color remark. To the mothers credit, she insisted that she help clean the mess her child made. They both cleaned up together with your employee being nothing short of pleasant. Working with the public is a tough job. Not always, but all too often service workers are verbally abused by some self centered, impatient and all around not too nice customers. There are two sides to every story. So taking all into consideration, I'm giving you 5 stars, not 4. Please share this with your staff that was working on 10/12/2018 between 5 and 6 PM. and be sure that they know that THEY made the difference between a 4 and 5 star rating. read more
