We decided to stay local this Record Store Day, an event each year where artists release exclusive,…read morecollector vinyl that can only be purchased in local record shops. For this event, the store was open with extended hours starting at 8am. We arrived early to have a good spot in line with other record connoisseurs. Upon opening, the staff came out to welcome everyone who had waited hours for opening and thanked each of us. When we got inside, my dad and I were able to browse through the RSD collections in nicely alphabetized bins. The event was nicely organized and patrons were filed in calmly and quickly. We were able to get everything we had hoped to purchase for RSD-- and more. It was truly such a great time, and my dad and I enjoyed making memories at this event together. While inside, we had the honor of talking to Charlie behind the counter. He is truly the face of Variety Records making us feel welcome, sharing his knowledge for not only Vinyl but the ins-and-outs of Record Store Day, and managing to still converse with each customer during what I would assume to be their busiest day of the year. He was fabulous and even remembered us the next time we came in the shop. They have a wide variety of new, used, and new-vintage vinyl records and cds. We left with seven albums combined and both found things we were excited to listen to. We will be back soon!

I continued in and was met with the lovely smiles and happiness of the owners. They were just opening and doing some last minute arrangements for the FCBD (Free Comic Book Day.) They had albums and comics and more. And rarely priced at that. I picked up a couple albums that I had been looking for and a few comics as well. He even gave me info on an album that I had been searching for my brother and he pointed me in the right direction. I appreciate that. Going to make this spot my local comic and record shop. The only negative thing I could possibly say about this awesome place was the young guy with glasses that rang me up at cash register two. After setting my basket down and getting out my credit card, I realize he must be waiting for me to get the books out, so no problem, I'm not above that. He waits for me to get all my books out, scans them, and that's it. Doesn't give me a bag to put my all my books in, or even help put back in the basket. No words to indicate the interaction is over until I awkwardly realize it on my own. He was very off-putting. She found McKay's online and it seemed to be the best place to do that. Wow -- we were not prepared for the massiveness of this super, super busy place! Being our first time and not knowing how it all worked, it didn't take us long to figure out where to go and what to do. There wasn't much of a line when we started. We placed her books in a bin, then waited to be called by a greeter. Our greeter quickly explained the process, gave the daughter a claim ticket, then we waited. In the 40 minutes it took for her claim number to come up on the screen, we were able to walk through most of the sections and pick out a couple things to buy. I was quite surprised to find so many things beyond books -- DVDs, VHS, vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes, clothing, Pokémon cards, instruments, game consoles, accessories, Legos, toys, comic books, etc. It was seriously amazing. My daughter decided to take her sale in trade which gave her about 50% more to spend. For the books they didn't buy she was given the option to take them back or donate them there. She chose to donate. The husband loves old movies, art and music -- he will absolutely enjoy McKay's. I can't wait to bring him here! The parking lot is as massive, so I don't think there's ever an issue with that.

A few years ago they took over the old church in East Nashville where they house their collection of wonders. As you enter the front door to the right, you'll find the box sets, limited editions and record day specials, both in vinyl and cds. The middle is predominantly vinyl and the left are the cds, both new and used. At the far end of the building where the altar would have been is now a stage where they sometimes showcase mini concerts, cd release parties, and book signings. Downstairs you'll find a good selection of books concerning music, be it country, rock, blues, folk or jazz. There's biographies history and style, again both new or used. Against the side wall there's a huge variety of jazz and classical. They give you a very fair trade-in value on used books, cds, and vinyls. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. If you've never been there, you owe it to yourself to go and spend a couple hours!
