Flat beans
Jason M.

Came in for lunch for the first time wanting some local Greek food and was very pleased with the experience. Easy takeout, friendly and helpful staff and delicious fresh food. Got a traditional gyro which was a great portion, spanakopita that was very fresh, baklava which was super sweet and flaky, and flat beans that was very unique and tasty. Never had most of these dishes but would absolutely come back and order again as well as other dishes.

kibee & falafel platters with pita

We were in town to visit Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash and happened to walked by this deli on a side street between the parking garage and Broad St. I'm glad we did, because we really enjoyed our lunch here. I got a platter with kibee with yogurt, tabouli, grape leaves, and string beans. The kibee was moist with a mild flavor. The tabouli was good, but I'm not generally crazy for tabouli, so I can't speak much to that. I was given the choice between meat or veg grape leaves; I went with meat, which were yummy umami comfort food. But, the star for me were the string beans. Such a simple recipe - string beans, sauteed onions, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil - created the first string bean dish I've ever been excited about. I plan to recreate it at home, and I bet it would taste just as good as a cold, picnic dish. Husband got the falafel platter with humous, tahini, and tabouli. He liked the tabouli and the hot sauce that was offered with it. He also enjoyed the falafel. He doesn't like yogurt, but didn't think to ask them to hold the yogurt; even so, he actually liked the way the yogurt soaked into the falafel. This is a small deli with a refrigerated case full of sodas, Gatorade, etc. It's a small store with a few tables, but comfortable enough. The lady behind the counter was friendly. Portions are generous. We ate too much to even get to try the desserts! Overall, we're glad we found this quiet little spot.

Kibbeh platter :)

As good as it gets. Authentic, made by proud hands that really care about crafting honest and delicious meals. This little deli sits tucked off Broad street, unpretentiously achieving some of the best Mediterranean food this Mediterranean-food-loving-girl has ever enjoyed. Order the platters so you can taste everything, because you shouldn't come here and not taste everything. I ordered a Kibbeh platter which came with kibbeh (warm and crumbly, seasoned perfectly with speckles of cinnamon), velvety fresh hummus and baba ganoush, tabbouleh, creamy cold yogurt sauce and a side of pita. I only wish they were closer to me. They'll never be far from my heart!

I found you tucked away in NJ Mediterranean restaurants can not hide from me. I have to find my falafel and if your good I will tell the world! This is a really nice little gem hidden here and I am not even sure where I am. I was traveling with my cousin who lives on the Jersey shore so I know we are close to Seabright NJ. Red Bank is where Zaitooni is located and they have some great authentic Mediterranean dishes here. The baklava was sooo gooey and delicious as it should be. I really enjoyed the hummus and tabouli because you can tell they made this fresh. I will seek this place out again when I come back soon.

Unlike Italian delis where much of the fare is made weeks or months earlier, everything at Zaitooni is made fresh on site. They have fantastic gyros as well as a number of other middle eastern foods and desserts.

I ordered the lamb chops while my husband had the chicken shawarma, and both plates came with rice, vegetables, and a fresh salad with a homemade dressing that was incredibly tasty and unlike anything we've had before. The drinks were homemade too - we had the lemonade and iced tea - and the presentation of everything was beautiful, right down to the mint sprigs in the glasses that added such a nice touch. We were served by the owner, Elias, who was warm, personable, and provided impeccable service the entire time. Even though we didn't order dessert, he surprised us with baklava on the house - delicate flaky layers topped with honey and pistachios that were absolutely delicious. If you're looking for a relaxing place to enjoy great Lebanese food, Beit Zaytoon is definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere is comfortable, welcoming, and not cramped at all.

Then we were served Pita bread; not the soft & fluffy kind but more of a thin pita pocket type. This pita went so well with the spreads! Here is our menu (shared by 3ppl): ~ Baba Ghannouj ($10): outstanding. The smokey flavors were mouth watering. Recommended! ~ Fattoush Salad ($15): very good; fresh veggies with a fresh herb dressing. Another great palate cleanser ~ Samboussek Jibneh (feta cheese dumpling) ($12/4pcs): loved these! The dumplings are deep fried but weren't greasy at all. This was a treat! ~ Lahme Meshwi (grilled filet mignon cubes w.rice & veg) ($40): I thought this dish was a tad bit overpriced but great nonetheless. The filet mignon was so tender and prepared perfectly. The rice and grilled veggies were good also. ~ Kaftan Kebab (grilled minced lamb kebabs w.rice & veg) ($25): the kebabs were very flavorful but could have used a sauce. I ate some with the Baba Ghannouj and it was wonderful. The assorted grilled Vegs were great. Note that they do not serve tap water; must purchase bottled water. Beit Zaytoon is located in a small strip mall, so there is plenty of parking available! Recommended, and I would definitely return to explore other menu items!

I went last night after a concert at the MetLife stadium near by. Once we were seated they brought out plates for the table and every one of the four plates given to us had charcoal dust on them, which isn't alarming at an establishment that serves hookah. We asked the waitress LAMIA if she can change the plates, Immediately she caught an attitude. She was adamant they weren't dirty but went to get us new plates as requested. The great thing about outside seating at this establishment is that the windows are wide open so you can see inside. We watched as LAMIA walked over to her coworkers to complain, stomp her foot and have an attitude driven tantrum while she filled them in on our request for new plates. For the rest of dinner we were greeted with the rudest attitude and treatment of distain from this server. She didn't want to speak with us. She didn't want to serve us. Thank you for runing our night LAMIA. She even brought the check over while we were mid eating our dinner, put it on the table and walked away without a word. Rushing us out without even acknowledgement. Paying $200 for a meal with that sort of treatment makes for an interesting end to our evening. We were raised with manners so we continued to be polite and thank her each time she dropped off an item. Makes me question if our food was tampered with because we even found a piece of hair in our meal. We all have long jet black hair down our backs so this hair definitely was not ours. But didn't feel comfortable to speak up due to the treatment we were already receiving. The service industry is for those who enjoy curating a space of fun and enjoyment for consumers. I would think twice about going to this establishment if you're looking for a good time.

This place was quiet at 5:30 on a Sat night. At 6pm a party of 4 came in and at 6:30 a party of 2 came in. I don't know how this place was not PACKED because this food is INCREDIBLE! Truly. This gem is hidden away in a plaza right off of the highway. The chef is also the waiter, and likely the owner. You can tell he takes pride is his food and knows exactly what he is doing in the kitchen. Although we don't eat meat, both the lamb and chicken specials sounded delicious and I am sure they are! Before I left, there was a couple who came in who he badgered loudly when they asked him for suggestions. He's definitely not a people person. He does a better job being in the back of the house as the food was grilled well. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and tried something different that I wouldn't normally gravitate towards. Lamb is not my favorite but I ordered it anyway despite coming in for the salad. I also had the lime and mint drink. Pretty expensive for a small glass and no refills. The food wasn't worth the price and the service was poor. I literally had to go to the back to ask him for extra napkins which he eventually took from an adjacent empty table. Did I mention the place was empty for most the of the time I was there? I also had to get up and go to the back to ask for more water and finally for the check. He was busy washing dishes the last time. Glad I tried something different but next time I do it won't be at cafe 28.

Rather than immediately posting a public review, I contacted management privately because I believed they deserved the opportunity to address the situation professionaly. Their initial response was that they would review the incident internally. After I followed up, they specifically offered to send me a complete ingredient list for everything we ordered so I could review it with my healthcare provider. I accepted that offer but, the ingredient list was never sent. Months later, there has still been no meaningful follow-up. My frustration isn't about demanding compensation or proving what caused the reaction. It's about customer care and accountability. Making promises that are never fulfilled leaves the impression that guest concerns only matter until the bill is paid. Once our $471 tab was settled, the commitment to help simply disappeared. The food and atmosphere may attract people, but how a restaurant responds when something goes wrong is what defines its hospitality. Unfortunately, based on my experience, the follow-through did not match the promises made, and I can't recommend a restaurant that handled a serious guest safety concern this way. Its NYC, 1000s of restaurants will charge less serve higher quality ingredients and treat you with greater hospitality, and this place is located in midtown east.
