Food was just okay. I got a bowl with chicken and falafel. the chicken shawarma meat was extremely dry like it had been around for a while. The falafel was pretty decent they cooked it fresh so it wasn't lying around. The service was okay not very friendly. Ambiance was sort of like a that of a bagel shop. It's a casual place...you order at the counter similar to a chipotle and then find a seat. With that in mind, the ambiance is very adequate (simple, pleasant and clean). Service was friendly. I ordered a felafal sandwich which I customized with various sauces/vegetables/etc. It was truly delicious and a breath of fresh air compared to so many of the dry felafals I've encountered lately. The sandwich was huge so I saved half for dinner when it was still enjoyable. Purchased a small container of baba ghanouj for my aunt which she later said was good. Solid mediterranean cuisine. We were looking for a quick dinner and Zaytouna popped up on Yelp as a great option in the Freehold area. It's a great place for a quick meal to eat in or even take out. I come to this place every time I'm in town. Food never disappoints, it's build-your-own bowl and their options are not that many so you don't get overwhelmed. I have eaten here in the past and always enjoyed it today my son and I shared some spanakopita and I had a falafel stuffed pita with tahini and cucumber sauce! We followed it up with a piece of homemade baklava but I was so full I had to take it home. Zaytouna used to be amazing, what happened??? Assembly line style Mediterranean take out place. Pick your carb, protein, toppings, and sauces. The place is empty every time I go, so I never have to wait long. Was kind of bummed that they changed their falafel recipe! Used to serve homemade falafels that were delicious, but now they switched to the frozen pre-made falafels that are chewy and tasteless. Also, they've become more stingy with the toppings. Used to be unlimited toppings, but now you can only pick 4. Really sad about these changes. I guess they're trying to save money... On a more positive note, I highly recommend buying a container of the the whipped garlic and babaganoush sides ($4 each) because they are delicious and authentic! read more

Shawarma. I have enjoyed chicken and beef Shawarma for years in Calif, in fact every weekend when I got my car washed- yes a car wash that had a restaurant... ANYWAY- I just Yelp'd and this place popped up, so you know, I had to go. Like- Today. Mini-Me, her BF, Hubby and I had an early dinner. First off it is super clean inside. The decor is simple yet bright and refreshing, I liked it. Menu is easy enough, first you choose the method of food delivery (base) salad, pita or bowl, then you choose the protein and it's an additional .75¢ for beef Shawarma, then unlimited crunchy veg sides and top it off with sauce. So I chose a mix of beef & chicken Shawarma on pita, with extra garlic sauce (LOVE THIS STUFF), tahini, hummus, extra pickled turnips (LOVE THESE BEAUTIES), lettuce and tomato and of course the red hot sauce. It was rolled and popped into a panini press (look out Chipotle - this here Mediterranean "Burrito" holds up to the stuffing inside and doesn't fall apart and it is DEEELICIOUS. First bite, BAM! I was hooked. Hubby had the beef Shawarma bowl with rice, tahini, hummus, feta, cucumber sauce, olives and garlic sauce and two peperoncinis. HE loved it!! Mini-Me had the pita with chicken Shawarma, olives, garlic, tahini and pickles, BF had the beef, tahini, lettuce, garlic and hummus. Not a bite was left, we all finished our wraps. 3 Snapple and 1 sprite - under $40.00 try that at Chipotle for 4 people and don't forget the $2.00 for a slap of Guac- even Qdoba doesn't charge for Guac. just saying. But anyway- The garlic sauce was exactly as I expected it to be, sharp and zingy, tahini was silky and so ohh good, totally complimented the fixings in that pita. The pickled turnips- let me tell you, I drive monthly to Damascus Bread and Pastry shop in Brooklyn to buy these pickled babies by the quart and if I run out- and I have on rare occasion- the brands Mid-East or Tazah if I am desperate must suffice- but, kid you not, these pink veg's are always in my fridge. People say "Franks Red Hot I put that "&*$@" on everything- well that's how I feel about these pickled turnips. Here is my suggestion, if you have never had tahini, garlic sauce or pickled turnips, just ask to put it on small plate on the side and use a spoon to put on your food as you take a bite. I was - NO! I went to Zaytouna as recommended by a friend. I'm not sure if I came at an off time but I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and was sadly disappointed. The baba ghanoush was very goood but the rest of the plate was lacking. It was also kind of expensive for how much you get (nearly $15 for just a plate). I went here about 3:30 today so it was a slow time. When I walked in, the employees were sitting at the back table. Totally fine because it was slow. The lady came over from the table and went behind to serve me. She didn't wash her hands. Now, I am very germ conscious so I noticed this right away. I was going to order a bowl so it didn't bother me too much as long as she wore gloves. She started to serve me. No gloves. I would have asked her where the gloves were except she wasn't touching my food. I have asked people many times in the past at other places. As she worked her way down the line (the set up is like Chipotle but only Mediterranean food), she stopped at the lettuce area. I didn't order lettuce but she paused and took the container with fresh lettuce from under the station. She used her un-gloved hands take out the lettuce from a container and place it on the line!! She then continued to serve me. (I tend to avoid lettuce in places like this for exactly that reason plus I have worked in places that don't wash the lettuce before). I got falafel because I am vegan and they had to make fresh falafel. While I waited, I saw a man came over to help a party of three behind me. He didn't wear any gloves either. He took out the chicken kabob and touched the skewer with his hand. He didn't touch the chicken but he still should have wore gloves. I got my falafel to complete the order and got baklava for dessert. Pros: they were very nice and he didn't mind that I didn't have cash because it's a minimum of $15 for credit cards. The food was very tasty and they give you a lot of it. I actually ate half for lunch and had the other half for dinner. Everything looked clean like many reviews mentioned. Cons: NO GLOVES!!! Seriously no matter whether you touch the food or not, gloves should be worn. NOTE TO CUSTOMER: You should bring cash for small orders. I have given this three stars for no gloves. Otherwise it would have gotten a higher rating. read more

My new favorite place! A delicious and satisfying Mediterranean spin on Chipotle's design-your-own-meal format! First you choose either a pita roll, bowl, or salad. Next comes your protein from a wonderful selection including chicken and beef shawarma. Next you choose up to two sauces from hummus, garlic sauce, or baba ghannouj sauce. All delicious. Finally you can add all the toppings you want including feta cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, olives, peppers, spicy tomatoes, cucumbers, and so on. It's a refreshing and tasty change from burritos and gyros. Also let me point out that the portion sizes are very generous and you will not leave hungry, unlike some of the similar gyro places in town. When I think of an amazing, healthy, authentic lebanese meal, this local spot is the first that comes to mind. It is located in a strip mall and I consider it a gem! The owners are super friendly and very helpful in menu recommendations. I have tried many things from their menu, the falafel is fried on the spot and delicious in a sandwich. My favorite dish is the kafta bowl. It is amazing! the beef is super juicy and not dry (which I've experienced at other mediteranean restauraunts). The garlic dip and the baba ghanouj are to die for and I like that I can make my own bowl. There are so many options to chose from and everything is super fresh. They cook their food daily and nothing ever tastes "old". Prices are very fair for the freshness and quality of the food. I recommend this to anyone in the area! Came here one weekend for a quick lunch. Service is not that friendly, but if the food is good, this isn't a sit down restaurant so I don't really mind. I ordered the falafel bowl while my boyfriend ordered the schwarma. I liked all the pickled options, but they give very little. So for the price, I wish they were a little more generous. What makes me give this restaurant only three stars is that the falafel was deep fried, and that oil just tasted rancid. I couldn't eat more than one. You get a 10% discount if you check in on facebook, but make sure he actually gives you the discount! read more

Fast casual Mediterranean joint located in a strip mall. Think chipotle but substitute pita for a burrito and hummus for salsa. Their menu has a "build your own" option where you go down in assembly line fashion picking your carb (pita, rice bowl or salad), protein, toppings and sauces. It costs $8.25 with $0.50 extra for feta cheese and $0.50 for extra sauce. They also have a limited menu of predesigned options if the choices of a "build your own" become too overwhelming. Most of these are a bit cheaper ($6-$7). The food was tasty, portion size large and the price point reasonable. However, a couple things bothered me and made my rating only 3 stars: 1) I ordered the chicken shawarma bowl and the server gave me whatever chicken scraps were left at the bottom. He literally scraped the bottom of his storage bin and I saw them bring fresh chicken batch for next customer. I know they don't want to waste chicken - I get it - but felt like I got a raw deal. 2) In my rice bowl, there were bits of undercooked or overcooked rice that was hard. The majority of rice was fine, but I had about 4 bites where I caught a piece of super hard rice. 3) No tap water. I asked if they have tap water and they said no, pointing me in the direction of bottled water ($1.33). Never encountered a food establishment that does not serve free tap water and although the bottled water was cheap, left me a bit irritated at being forced to purchase. 4) Charging me $0.50 for a small cup of extra sauce when the initial pour wasn't sufficient to begin with...C'mon man! I wouldn't be opposed to returning, but more likely to try some other fast casual establishments that are popping up. read more

While debating stopping in my wife and I walked up and saw "Gyro" advertised on the chalkboard sidewalk sign. Sounds good. First the good news, when we walked in the place was sparkling clean and the food all looked fresh. Unfortunately from there it goes downhill. When we asked for gyros the girl behind the counter says that the lamb shawarma "is the same thing". Great. Except it's not. I order one sandwich with onions and no sauce. Wife orders one sandwich with no onions, but include the sauce. As the counter girl was making the two sandwiches I see her putting the sauce on the sandwich with the onions. When I stop her my wife takes a closer look and says "That's not tzatziki sauce, so don't put it on mine either". She then pours tahini sauce into a side cup. At this point a gentlemen who was sitting at a table gets up, goes behind the counter and then confronts us. He condescendingly and at length explains the difference between tzatziki and tahini sauces, and why we should expect tahini on the shawarma. Except A - counter girl said it was the same sandwich as gyro, just a different name. And B - I asked for no sauce, so the difference in the sauces is irrelevant. Both of the employees were impatient rude and overbearing. Eventually we got our order right, and went to sit down. Counter girl then pours the cup of side sauce back into the large container. While we eat (Lamb was decent, bread was dried out, so nothing very good or bad about it) Both employees then sit at an empty table and have a whispered conversation about ignorant customers. When we left I tried to say thanks and good night but they turned their heads away and refused to make eye contact. Overall a disheartening and annoying experience and we won't be back. As a side note I'd say it's kind of false advertising to run a Lebanese Restaurant and call it "Mediterranean". While technically true it is still misleading. read more
