Grabbed dinner at Zamboni's before the Frost game. We ordered toasted ravioli, Caesar salad, and the farmer's market pizza. I don't think I'd order the toasted ravioli again - not because they were bad, but to try other appetizers instead. The farmer's market pizza had a nice kick/heat to it. We only had to wait about five-ish minutes to be sat. Our server was attentive, even with us being her last table. We ordered, ate and chit chatted all within an hour. Had The Bomb Sandwich. Beef sautéed with spicy giardiniera, melted cheese (their version of cheese wiz), with roasted garlic mayo on a toasted roll. From a guy from PA. (Home of the Philly) I gave it a 7.25. They cut the bread instead of making it a sub, so was kind of messy to eat, but tasted great. Good quality meat. Fries were hot and had a good crunch to them. Mike, Ryan, and Katie were very attentive, great energy, and made me feel like a VIP even with them being busy with the Xcel event going on. Stopped in a few times before hockey games and it is pretty good. I like the loaded tots appetizer, I think it is a nice twist on a classic. Garlic bread is pretty good and nachos were a good amount. The pizza is also just your standard pizza. One thing to note, you cannot order the full menu outside which was fine for us but thought it was kind of weird. The food and service were 10/10, especially considering the location and timing right before a Wild game. I ordered the Mediterranean salad with grilled chicken, and my husband got the Zamboni pizza. The salad came in a generous bowl with dressing on the side. The lettuce was incredibly fresh and the chicken breast was juicy and well cooked. The pizza was also outstanding--thin, cracker-like crust with fresh toppings that were perfectly cooked. We definitely overate because we didn't want to waste anything, but it was sooo worth it. I've had pizza at Zamboni's twice now. Each time I have picked up and taken out. The first time I went and picked up a pepperoni pizza I believe a 16 inch. I really enjoyed the thin crust of the pie and the ingredients tasted good. The second time I got a 12 inch pie that had pepperoni, garlic, red peppers, and white sauce, which was surprisingly very flavorful and the garlic was really hitting the spot. Again, the crust is really good and especially if you are not into a lot of crust or bread with your pizza this is a great alternative, the crust is not too thin that it tastes like a cracker! We were in town for the MN yacht club festival and Zamboni's was our spot! We were here last year too and it felt good coming back. Food is above average for pub fare, but what really stands out is their service and ambiance! Great vibes. Perfect patio. Large place able to accommodate large groups, yet hometown feel up front. Bingo was going on with what looked like fun regulars on Sunday. We always ate and drank outside. Every single staffer was extremely kind, accommodating and approachable as if you were a regular. Stopped in on a whim before a concert looking for something quick. The interior of this place is underwhelming, and seating is limited, though we found a nice high top spot near the window. It is so dark in here, we needed to stay by the window to get some light! We decided to order the slice of the day: Sausage with Roasted Veggies (mushrooms, caramelized onions, and red peppers) and their Loaded Tater Tots. Everything was piping hot when it arrived and super flavorful. The pizza has a nice thin crunchy crust and was loaded with cheese - wish I would have snapped a pic of that cheese pull! We had some drinks while we waited for our food to be made fresh, everything here was reasonably priced considering how close it is to the Xcel. The only down side was it did take a lot longer to receive our food than we would have liked, which was surprising because it didn't seem that busy inside at the time. The staff were very friendly and happily answered any questions we had. Parking is limited, we parked at a nearby lot for the concert and just walked over. While the shop was small and lacked much ambiance (with uncomfortable seating), the service and food was good. We ordered Italian Fries as an appetizer (cheese and garlic on a pizza crust) and a Zamboni pizza (sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and bacon). The toppings on the pizza were tasty, and while I enjoy a thin crust pizza, the crust was lacking flavor. We dined in, but they appear to have a booming pickup for takeout business popular with locals. Parking is limited to on street meters, although their is a paid parking ramp around the corner. After the game we were stuck in the garage for nearly an hour so instead we walked back to grab food and a drink. I am so glad we did because we found Zamboni's an old school pizza joint in St. Paul right across from the stadium. With limited seating and an old pizza parlor feel this place has slice and drink specials and specialty and traditional pizzas, sandwiches and Italian food to order. We tried a variety of slices and some beer on tap and got a table to wait out the traffic. A coupe of thoughts: The pizza is good, it has a ton of cheese and was fresh out of the oven. This isn't a hipster place, it's a bit run down but has an old school charm. The reason this got two stars is the fact the cooks were nice. The reason this didn't get anymore stars is because the person who was taking my order was standoffish and had an attitude around her. I asked for a large pizza with two toppings. Each topping is 3 dollars each, but I could count each topping on one hand. The pizza was subpar at best. I asked her if she could put half of it in another box. She said she couldn't, because of the cost of the box and also they didn't have a box for it. Which is false, for the fact that they had medium size boxes. Not the best experience for myself. I will be taking my business elsewhere. The cooks were pretty nice though. read more

The ideas for reviews dribble in based on light bulbs going on, memory, filing photos, and time to write them. That said, this review of Zamboni's is fairly recent and depended more on me looking at some photos of my visit. Of the Twin Cities, I like St. Paul more. I don't know why. Perhaps because it's hillier, quainter, quieter, and has unique landmarks, such as Union Station, the Cathedral of Saint Paul, and the Minnesota State Capitol. I wanted to try a grub joint in St. Paul and thought I was going to get pizza. Zamboni's is a pizza place. However, I settled on lasagna, and had them add mushrooms to it for a very reasonable upcharge. I got a soft drink, too. The server was really helpful and wanted to make sure I got what I wanted and how I wanted it. So did the apparent owner. And they helped with directions, too. The prices were fair for the genre of eatery. Seating inside is limited and it's mostly tables along the wall. The weather was really nice that evening and I was able to get one of the tables outside on the wide sidewalk. The lasagna arrived and the presentation was slightly "Eye-talian," meaning it was in an oval casserole dish and had the cheese covering the top. However, once I began digging into it, it was tasty and the portion size was to my liking, meaning I didn't leave hungry. There are a few other things to note about Zamboni's. First, I figured a Mr. Zamboni might have owned the place at one time. Clearly, I was not connecting the dots. This pizzeria is on the same street and slightly west of Xcel Center, a sports arena where they play hockey. (Light bulb goes on: what was the brand name of that machine that cleaned up the ice at the Culver Ice Rink in Culver City when I was a teenager? Duh.) Next, the location is excellent, in an area west of downtown with trendy eateries, on a major artery, and walkable from several Metro Transit stations. For that matter, you could also approach it from Shepard Drive below and along the river. That way, you will have an opportunity to burn off calories owing to the hill that separates 7th, and Zamboni's, from the nicely configured riverside green area down below. Lastly, it appears that they have pizza slices and, given some photos I saw, they also have some fine looking, outfitted gyros. How did I miss that? read more

I have been meaning to try this place since some flyers were dropped off at my work. Tonight in our quest to try a new place, this place popped into my head because it was close and seemed pretty quick. Called to place an order, a nice girl answered and told me it would be about 20 min. I ordered the whole salami hoagie which is a warm sandwich. It was toasted on part of the roll and the top wasn't which was odd for my liking. Too much bread and too much that wasn't toasted. The lettuce reminded me of the big chunks that come in a bag of lettuce. The sauce on it was really oily and messy, but had its moments. J ordered the gyro which he said was pretty good. It came wrapped like a burrito. Fries were meh. J liked them better than I did. They reminded me of frozen sysco fries with a light batter. They deliver, but we opted to pick it up. Ordered small pepperoni pizza, the cook has long black hair and beard he did not have a hair or beard net. I proceeded with the order. The pizza had black hair cooked in the cheese and the bottom of the pie had multiple black spots in the crust. I asked for the pie to be remade-hold the hair, black dirty-looking crust, and attitude of the staff that tried to talk me into keeping it. I received the re cooked pie.. No hair; however there was more black dust-dirt looking spots on top of the pie and baked on the bottom. It's so GROSS to see black specs, lint, dirt, or some other particles mixed in the white cheese and baked on the bottom of the pizza.... Had to THROW IT AWAY!!! Zamboni's is a relatively newish pizza shop that has opened up on West 7th near the Xcel Center. Nothing about Zamboni's is breaking any molds, but it's a decent alternative to some of the more ubiquitous delivery options in the downtown St. Paul area. Their pizza is the typical Midwestern style pie - thin crust, square cut and fairly generous with the cheese. If you generally like this style of pizza you should be pretty content. They also offer a number of different hoagies, wings, gyros and salads. Again, nothing is too memorable, but the various wings, gyros, etc. that I have tried have been fine. They also have few beers on tap if you're dining in which are very reasonably priced - not a bad option for grabbing a slice and pint before an event or if you're looking for delivery in or near downtown (online ordering is also available). read more

Do you like grease with a side of extra grease in your meal? Zamboni's has that and so much more. I won't deny that I love me some greasy comfort food. This place is known as a pizza joint, but the menu here has everything from burgers to wings to gyros...there's something for everyone! My boyfriend and I were scrambling to find some food during LuckyPalooza, so we randomly picked Zamboni's. Like most other places on 7th street, it was hectic. We ordered a Philly Steak Sandwich ($9), a Lamb Gyro ($7), and small fries ($3). The wait for our food was easily over 45 minutes long, but it was understandable given the crowd. What made it disorganized however, was that the numbers being called weren't in order and there was no clear waiting line. There were missed/skipped orders, and I overheard one of the employees telling two customers that he would give them each a free soda for being so patient. He asked what they had ordered, and he said "yeah, I don't know what's going on over at the pizza, but I will get to the bottom of it" That man was on a mission to fix a mess. Once we finally got our food, we booked it out of there. The beer-battered fries were soooo good. My boyfriend enjoyed his Philly, and I liked my gyro. I preferred less tzatziki sauce (the gyro was drowning in it) but the lamb gyro meat was juicy and seasoned well. I'd gladly come back to Zamboni's if I happen to be visiting St. Paul, but I'll choose a slow business time, so I can avoid another ordering mess. Giving this place a 3, mostly because of atmosphere and location. The food was ok but I don't think that's their biggest seller during, before or after a Wild game. The chicken gyro wrap had good flavor but the chicken was dry. My soda water tasted like chlorine. The chicken fingers and fries had good flavor. The service was pretty slow and we were the only people in there at 1130am on a Wednesday, probably because they have just a small space for cooking and one person doing the cooking. Normally, I wouldn't review a restaurant I've never actually been inside of but I think I've had their pizza enough times to be well-versed. Jenny and I have spent many romantic, warm evenings at home shoveling pizza down our gullets so fast our stomachs got third degree burns from the molten cheese. We're really just a couple of fatties with high metabolisms, people. Anyway, the first time I found myself ordering delivery here I just wanted to try something different. Rocco's has lost its luster, I can't stand Domino's/Pizza Hut and we could never agree on any of the other scattered places we've gone. The first thing that caught my eye was the fact that they only do thin crust pizzas (of which I'm not typically a fan). Jenny 1 - Sam 0 I shrugged it off and proceeded to the toppings. Much to my surprise, I saw items like fresh garlic, roasted (-and- raw) onions and fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, rosemary and thyme). I clicked on the garlic option faster than she could protest. There's something to be said about controlling the mouse. Jenny 1 - Sam 1 Ultimately, we ended up ordering a 14" garlic, roasted onion and basil pizza. Upon clicking through the final stages, we were brought to and end screen that told us the pizza would be there between 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. .... We both lost that round. Jenny 1 - Sam 1 But, to our pleasant surprise, they vastly overshot the time and the pizza arrived hot and ready in 25 minutes. This has been a common theme and one I've come not to mind; preparing yourself to first world starve for an hour and a half makes the pizza taste so much sweeter when it comes in 30 minutes. Onto the taste. This has truly been the first thin crust pizza that hasn't disappointed me. It's not cracker thin and doesn't have that crunchiness to it I was dreading but instead has a great chew and texture. The sauce is usually the place where Jenny and I clash the hardest: she likes copious amounts and I could go completely without it; she likes hers herby and a touch sweet while I prefer herby and salty. It's a struggle, ya'll. This sauce made both of us happy in terms of taste and quantity. It's got an herbaceous zip with a keen balance of salty sweetness and I'll readily admit to loving it. The cheese quantity was spot-on (not enough to kill me before the big 3-0 and not lacking to make me raid the fridge for extra) and the toppings were excellent. I've gotten food here 3 times, the first 2 were very good and tonight it was super off the charts great! The first visit I dined in with the family, everyone liked the pizza. Tonight I got the Garlic Bomb for take out on my way home from work and I'm chewing while typing because it is SO tasty I got excited to leave a good review! I love a good Philly Cheese Steak. I even went to Philly to try the ones that claim to be the original, where I found out they make bad ones with gross Cheese Whiz and cheap gristly meat. The Garlic Bomb is kind of a cross between a Philly and a Chicago style Italian Beef and it is the best I've ever had of either. It brings some good heat and a perfect amount of garlic. They also have a regular Philly, but I like heat so I'll stick with the Bomb. Fries were seasoned nicely, only a few survived the drive home. I'm conflicted about this place... I've only ordered from them once and it was delivery, but it was an impressionable experience. First of all I ordered online at 7:30pm and didn't get my food till after 9:30pm. Little did I know there was a Wild game downtown, which caused them to be busy and backed up, as well as traffic for the delivery driver. It was also snowing like crazy. I was frustrated and furious waiting 2 hours for my food. At 9pm I called 17 times and never got through. But when the delivery driver explained the reason I could understand and empathize, I just wish I would've been told it'd take that long, I wouldn't of ordered. Another thing: all the negative reviews were right, the pizza is AWFUL. And I'm not a picky eater in the least, i eat Little Caesars and Dominos. But their pizza is trash. It tastes like they cooked it on a dirty pan. It's worse than most frozen pizzas, the flavor is bland and sad. It broke my heart that I waited over two hours and spent money that I rarely have, on that sad trash pizza. I'm full from regret. But the saving grace of this stressful depressing order was their fries and gyro. They were bomb. The gyro was huge, overflowing, and sloppy. So yum. And the fries were flavorful, soggy/crispy, and tasty as heck. Thank god because otherwise I would've gone hungry last night, because I could NOT even eat that pizza. 10" Gyro meat with red onion was sick. I ate the entire thing while watching MNF. I ate it so fast that the last piece was still hot enough to burn the roof of my mouth. Pleasant surprise! My husband and I needed to kill some time so we decided to wander and find a place for lunch. First place we walked into had a wait so we kept going and found this place. Didn't know what to expect as no one was in there. Im glad we stumbled upon this place because it was EXCELLENT!! I had the Antipasto salad and my husband had the chicken philly. BOTH outstanding!
