Our youngest wanted pizza and ice cream so Pizza Biga was a perfect location in our neighborhood because right next door is Pumphouse Creamery. We got there about 45 minutes before closing and didn't think we could still dine in but to our surprise the server was still serving. The dining inside was empty and it was super hot yesterday so we stuck with A/C for indoor dining and got to pick wherever we wanted to sit. It was great because we got a table for six by the window. Our food came right out and didn't have to wait very long. When we were almost done, there was a line at Pumphouse Creamery so the server said that we didn't have to be in a rush and can take our time to finish up. The pizza crust is like eating an Indian naan bread, crispy on the edges act soft in the middle. Just how I like to enjoy my pizza. The pizza size is like a personal size pizza but could be shareable. But I think I could have finished the whole pizza if I didn't need to save room for ice cream. The pizza dough is so light and fluffy that I didn't feel bloated at the end where I felt like I ate too much. This is probably my third time here. Great pizzas for a reasonable price and it's local. Definitively will be back again. They two beers on tap otherwise there's a wine list. read more

Absolutely loved this little pizza shop! We were going to see a show at the parkway and grabbed some dinner before! The place is tiny so highly recommend going during the week or on a slower day to ensure you could get a table! The staff was so kind and the food came out so quickly! The pizza dough is incredible (probably due to the fact it's attached to Turtle Bread Company). The pizza is wood fired and had so much flavor! Simple yet delicious. This seems like the perfect place for a date night! Parking is only available on the street but we had no problem finding some close by! Can't wait to go back! read more

This was a just by chance encounter. My wife had to stop over around here to drop something off for a friend and she asked us if we wanted to have one of the best pizzaz we've ever had. I said ok. I've been told this same thing about other places that wound up not being to case. This time, she was right! This place is great. I was already having a good day. But this meal made it a great day! Highly recommend this place. 110%! I've tried Pizza just about everywhere in the US. Chicago always had the reputation that wherever you go, that'll be the best pizza you've ever had. I've been to Chicago a million times. And No, that's not true at all. I've had pizza in Chicago that was pretty bad. Like, Tortino frozen pizza bad. And I've had pizza that I still dream about today. Yum! First pizza here, and definitely won't be the last. We picked up 3 wood fired pizzas here plus a tasty mixed greens salad. All 3 of us were perfectly happy with our meal including the veggie (red sauce, mushroom, red onion, pickled peppers, mozzarella), pepperoni (red sauce, pepp, mozz), and Biga pizza (red sauce, mushrooms, capicola, red onion, pickled peppers, mozz). The crust was nicely fired, toppings plentiful, cheese melty, and portion size was definitely bigger than personal size. After a failed attempt to get something from Turtle Bread (they don't really offer much after lunch hours end), I decided to try out the pizza here. While the restaurant itself is pleasant enough, I was rather disappointed by the pizza. The staff on the Pizza Biga side were attentive and quick to prepare my order, so that was wonderful! If I end up eating here again in the future, I'll have to try something else. I got a Margherita pizza and found the texture of the crust to be chewy with an adequate amount of firmness to it. The sauce was more on the bland side and that was a bit unfortunate. Even some crushed red pepper flakes didn't help the flavor much. The ingredients seemed fresh though, so that was a plus. I'm curious as to whether having a different pizza with more ingredients would change my mind. Unfortunately, there are so many fantastic pizza places in the Twin Cities. I was with a group of friends recently when the topic of best Twin Cities pizza came up. One was adament that the best without question was to be found at Pizza Biga. I hadn't heard of this place and I asked him what kind of za they served. He replied: "Neopolitan." I said that I thought Punch serves an outstanding Neopolitan style pizza. He quickly and emphatically asserted that Biga was "orders of magnitude" better. I said that was placing the bar awfully high. He backed off just slightly to say that maybe it was only one order of magnitude better. In any case, expectations were lofty the other day as three of us swung by to give this place a try. It turned out to be a perfect spring evening (what? no freezing temps and blowing snow?) and we lucked out by finding an open table on the sidewalk in front. Turns out to have been a very pleasant corner to enjoy al fresco dining. I ordered the Bianca - olive oil-picholine green olives-fresh mozzarella-basil-chili oil ($14) together with a small Caesar Salad. The pizza served in a wide, shallow pasta bowl. As a result, the ingredients in the center had pooled at the bottom making for a soft, gooey bite. However, the outer crust, overhanging the bowl was perfectly blistered and had a very appealing, smokey taste and wonderful texture. Anyway, I just pushed the sqaushy, delectable, high quality ingredients from the tip of each slice toward the edge and savored every morsel. This is very. very good pizza. Bonus, I had a few slices to take home for later enjoyment. Now, was this establishment orders of magnitude (or an order of magnitude) better than Punch? In my mind I might give Biga a slight nod but it could just be due to the influence of recency. The next time I'm at Punch I may well rate them a bit ahead. But why quibble? I don't think you can go wrong at either place. Service was warm and gracious. Plenty of on street parking available. read more

Don't go here if you like good service. Go here if you have great company and want a delicious wood fired pizza. While I know two stars are harsh, truthfully you can get just as delicious pizza at many other places in the cities with servers that acknowledge you and earn their tip. I may be somewhat picky about the service I receive at restaurants (a smile, waters before 30 minutes and info about the menu too much to ask?), but I am a paying customer and if all you are going to do is simply take my order, I could punch it in the computer myself and save my 20% tip. I'm not even a high-maintenance diner. Okay, while this sounds horrible, it wasn't horrible. I had a great time with delicious pizza and tasty wine. I had the macerated mozzarella and sampled the pepperoni and white pizza from my dinner mates. Everything was flavorful and fresh. Keep in mind, this was just the night I went in. Oh sad day... We were starving (maybe bordering on "hangry" -hungry-angry) and exhausted last night after a 5 hour trip home. I called up pizza biga to order two pizzas to go ASAP. I think I was polite and friendly on the phone, and thanked the person for being willing to have the pizzas ready really fast. The hubs went to pick them up immediately. When he got home, we opened the two boxes. I got the Dan's Balsamic, it looked a bit greasy but otherwise good. My husband got a sausage pizza which literally had only 6 tiny pieces of sausage. Like probably less than 3 tablespoons of meat. You really would have thought it was a cheese pizza they had accidentally dropped a bit of meat on while making another pizza. It was also soggy with grease... (I'm posting a pic if I can figure out how to do it.) It was the saddest looking pizza I have ever seen. Note that these two single serving pizzas cost more than a large pizza at many other local pizza places... and the sausage pizza costs the same as Dan's Balsamic, which seems odd.... So, we called to speak with someone and ask what could be done. My husband was polite but animated and told the woman on the phone why he was disappointed in his pizza. And she started laughing! So he asked to speak to the manager, which made her laugh harder. She claimed she was the manager. He asked her to stop laughing and stressed that he was pretty unhappy... she offered him a gift card, but she was still laughing as she said it. He was so offended, he pretty much said he was never coming back and hung up the phone... What the heck??? Who laughs when a customer calls with a complaint? I previously had pretty positive feelings about this place, but after this experience we won't be going back to Pizza Biga or Turtle Bread, because they're attached... They get two stars instead of one because I do admittedly like the Dan's Balsamic pizza... read more

This is my favorite pizza spot. I don't indulge in pizza often or I would become a pizza monster made only of pizza dough and bubbling tomato sauce under a layer of melty cheese. In an effort to save humanity and my wallet from having to buy new pants I only eat it quarterly. As the most interesting man in the world would phrase it "I don't always eat pizza, but when I do it's Pizza biga" the woodfired crust has all the chewy and crunchy goodness you could want. Fantastic date night location! Pizza Biga has a limited menu, but everything on it is delicious. The wine list is short as well but very reasonably priced ($5-7/glass). Prices for a meal are good as well- about $12-15/person. I suggest sharing a pizza and salad with someone. The location is connected with the neighboring bakery, so if you want dessert I suggest heading over there for a slice of cake or pie. read more

Whenever I go home to visit, my Mom and I try to stop in at Pizza Biga for a light dinner. The white pizza paired with their arugula salad (made with the sweetest, lightest balsamic I've ever ever ever tasted) makes for a perfect meal for two. I'm sure I could throw down a whole pizza by myself...but I'd prefer to grab a dessert from Turtle Bread instead. It's never too busy here, and the waiters are always sweet. Stopped in last night, late. and we were pleasantly surprised that they were still willing to serve us. I ordered the mushroom pizza with portabellas, parmesan, onions, and goat cheese (no sauce). The parmesan really came out, it was nicely salted and there was a nice amount of it and the goat cheese. crust was great also. It was quite nice to be honest. the pizza's are larger than i expected, i could have split it, my boyfriend could have ate all of his. Prices were so so, $11-13 per pie. and the service was iffy. but it was late and they were willing to feed me so i wasn't complaining. read more

The pizza tastes great, the atmosphere is quaint, but the terrible turtle bread co ownership runs too deep at this place. My wife went to order a gluten free pizza, which is on the menu and she's ordered it before. After we place our order, the server tells us they don't have gluten free dough left. He explained that even though it's on the menu, the owners have a terrible system in place, and sometimes the have it, sometimes they don't.? Say what? That's a game changer so we had to walk out. The poor server was stuck covering up for management. Another time they screwed up my to go order, and man who I assumed was the owner was yelling at his employees in front of the customers. I have family in the neighborhood that love this place, so decided to give it a try. First impression was great, a little hole-in-the-wall, clean, with photocopied 8.5x11 menus and minimal decor. The kind of unpretentious place that generally turns out awesome food. If we hadn't been a little rushed for dinner, we might've left before we got our food. Our waitress was...politely, interesting. They had just opened for the day, so we were her first table. And apparently we were a phenomenal inconvenience. She made no attempt at small talk, and managed plenty of body language rudeness before we ordered. The menu doesn't list any beverages beyond wine; when my wife asked what they had, she got an actual eye roll. This was vaguely comical, given that the server's shirt had so many holes, big enough that I could verify that she had recently shaved her pits. We both ordered lemonade, which turned out to be delightful, just slightly sweet and very tasty. We split a margherita pizza and a small caesar salad. The salad was basic; sliced romaine with grated parmesan and croutons. Very light on the dressing, but it had that lemon-y spark that screams homemade to me, so I can forgive that. It was certainly overpriced at $6. The pizza was something else entirely. The crust was skating the edge of raw in the center, but crisp-charred at the outside. The red sauce was very flavorful, but also very sparingly applied and a bit watery. The mozzarella was delightful, but again, very minimal, covering maybe half the pizza. The basil was VERY light, I would say a tablespoon of chopped basil over a decent sized pizza, and that's including the couple of flowers that we picked off. Our waitresses workload had doubled by this time, meaning she had a second table. Maybe it was the stress getting to her, when she stomped up to our table halfway through our meal, dropped the bill on the table and walked away. While we weren't planning on spending any more money here, asking (Heck, saying anything.) would've been polite. I dropped my card on top of the bill and watched her provide multiple stages of service to her other table, standing around in between, before coming back to run my card. There may have been a grumbled "thanks" when she dropped the card and charge slip at the table, but nothing else. I left the smallest tip, as a former bartender and waiter, that my conscience would allow. Between the mediocre food and the downright terrible service, we won't be back. Very puzzled that this is a favorite spot for a branch of my family. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have been here at least 15 times. The pizza is killer. Not the buried in cheese or smothered in sauce variety. This is a great place to go for brick oven, Italian style pizza. The prices are very reasonable for the high quality of food and it never seems to be too busy. We've always had great service as well. Pizza Biga is within walking distance of my house but I have not been there for about 3 years. In the last 3 years, the atmosphere of Pizza Biga has gone from cozy and a fun place to hang out to downright dumpy! Most of the tables were bare on top or contained a salt/pepper shaker. When we first walked in at 6:30pm I thought the place was deserted! If I hadn't noticed the two very bored looking chefs leaning against the counter I would have thought nobody was there. The menu was printed out on plain, white paper and called appetizers 'Apps'. The informality of the menu was just not friendly and seemed like an after thought. The service was iffy! However, Dan's balsamic pizza was delicious! Next time I just might get the pizza to go and create my own atmosphere at home. When this place first opened it was always packed but it appears nobody, even the owners are paying it much attention now. read more

This IS an amazing creative, high quality pizza restaurant. I got the sense it is either co-owned or very cooperative with Turtle Bread right next door. The PB guests use TB's restrooms. I luv thin crusted pizzas and these are the best I've had in a decade. Fantastic toppings that combine unbelievable ingredients such as a pickled-ginger hot pepper, grapes on others, and herbs, cheeses galore. Good sized salads that are also creative. They have about 12 outdoor tables. My only critique is I wish its house wine was cheaper. I'll definitely return ! read more
