Zao in general has gone down in quality and quantity of food over the years but especially at this location. Totally get that prices for food are increasing but makes it kinda difficult to justify eating at fast dining places like Zao when the portions are getting more and more stingy while the food quality is getting worse. We went here tonight and grabbed two bowls at around 8:00 pm and unfortunately they were out of noodles by the time it was my turn to order, as such I asked for half noodles and half rice because there weren't enough noodles. They charged me extra for a full order of noodles in which I obviously didn't get the full order of noodles given they didn't have enough and I would have preferred all noodles. Though it's a small detail and not a big deal, it's definitely off putting when the portion sizes have notably gotten smaller throughout the years and now they're charging for ad ons that you don't get. It could have been an honest mistake but makes for a pretty disappointing experience- value for quantity and quality of a fast dining experience is below expectations for a fast dining joint, likely won't ever come back. read more

I've been here twice now and didn't love it either time. This time I thought I would go with something safe and I just got teriyaki meatballs with half rice and half noodles. The meatballs were a little dry, the noodles were a little too thick and not quite cooked all the way. At least to my liking. The rice is really good though. My daughter loved her food. I love Zao the food is fantastic I have my go to dish that I eat every time. The one thing that zao lacks is good customer service. Is just an awkward order experience. they don't say hi, they don't greet their customers. They tend to be slow to restock their drinks. they talk to each other and ignoring the customer. Not very productive. Luckily the food is fantastic so I will keep coming back. the food is pricey not exactly affordable to do weekly. So if I'm gonna be spending money or expected to tip then it would be nice to be greeted and not feel like a ghost if that makes sense. read more

My friend and I had been out running errands all night and we decided to grab a quick bite to pickup and take home to unwind. Zao was an excellent choice! We paired it with a nice bottle of white wine and plenty of girl talk. Our last minute to-go order felt like a fine dining experience in the comfort of my home--what a way to end a Monday! It's totally decent! Not my favorite go-to spot in The District but it's also not the worst and I can always find something to eat there. The teriyaki chicken is good, nothing too fancy, and they fill their bowls to the brim with all the goodies. Broccoli, rice, noodles, onions, cilantro, etc. I always get a few pieces of broccoli and onions that don't look incredibly appetizing, but they're easy to pick out and eat around. Maybe I just need to get something different, everyone raves about the curry so I think I'm going to try that next time! Overall, it's nothing super fancy for me but it is good so give it a try! We love Zao, especially because our young kiddos always eat everything. We were super disappointed tonight when we opened our to go order, all of the deef was raw (see picture). It wouldn't have been such a big deal if it wasn't for our boys. I don't mind eating pink meat but there was no way I was going to feed my kids this, it's a good thing I still cut meat into small pieces or we wouldn't of noticed it. Both bowls had all of the toppings. They both were very good, but I preferred the steak bowl. Portion sizes are generous and we both finished our bowls. I tried it for the first time and was blown away with deliciousness. I had a teriyaki rice chicken bowl paired with a lovely mango fresca and can't say enough great things about it. The setup of the restaurant is casual-you walk in and see a large sign that outlines different menu options and guides you through the ordering process. You talk directly with a person who is assembling your meal and you can pick and choose what options to select or skip. Everything was very fresh and super clean. Drinks are self-serve and I tried the mango fresca-which was sweet, but not carbonated, so more like a juice. I really dig it. There is ample seating and a really cool, modern vibe. There is great zen-like music playing, and I was half tempted to throw down some yoga moves in the back of the dining area, but was scared away by the other patrons who looked like they may have laughed me out of the establishment if I had tried. read more

I love Zao. The food is tasty and I've always had a good experience. The restaurant is always clean and the staff are always friendly.

This is my go-to spot to eat lunch with friends. Good sized portions. I always stick with the steak bowl and mix the sauces, part curry part teriyaki. I feel like you get a decent amount of good vegetables and you can substitute zucchini slices instead of rice or do half and half... I also especially love their low calories cucumber drink. I'm in love with their Green Curry sauce: Coconut milk, freshly ground herbs, and exotic spices. It's hot, but not too hot ... sweet, but not too sweet ... just the right amount of savory ... in other words, the perfect curry mix without being overpowering. Fresh and flavorful vegetables (cilantro, scallion, carrot daikon), the perfect mix of crispy onions, chili paste, peanuts, and rice (you can also go for noodles. And for my protein, I went chicken. We usually get the tacos and they are always filling. The amount of meat in the tacos was extremely disappointing and laughable. We asked for a little more meat and got two little extra pieces. The tacos are always filling and you get full at other locations. For $14 for 3 tacos, we expected a filling meal instead of a late night snack. Will not be coming to this location again. read more

I love going to Zao. I like the fresh, flexible options. I like the soups the best. This time, I got a bit confused and ordered a "bowl" of soup with broth. The server gal had very poor English skills and started a "bowl" I tried to correct her, trying to get the broth instead. She just continued with the bowl. The next gal was better, but I could only get one spoonful of sauce out of her and she missed the jalapenos. The rest of my family seemed to do just fine ordering their bowls and tacos. Except my son got a lot of extra teriyaki sauce on his. Also, I asked the cashier if I could still get rewards from an in person order, she said yes and gave me the receipt. It's been several days and I can't figure out how to add the rewards, sent a message on the website... No response. Next time I'll be more careful about my word choice and do better to order on the app. But it would also be nice for employees to work on English skills. It would be nice to be able to get rewards for in person orders as well. read more

When you come here make sure you double check your receipt. On two separate occasions they added items on that I did not order and had I not checked my receipt I wouldn't have noticed. On the first attempt I let it slide but on the second I confronted of the manager who began to argue with me and make up excuses. The food is wonderful but the service was dishonest and distasteful.
